Holy. Crap. Oils and Nectars at 75 and 50 en.

In the first game, Oils sold for 200 en apiece, and you needed Cross Seeds to purchase them; Cross Seeds weren't available until the 6th floor, were extremely rare Take items, and you needed one seed per oil. Nectars cost 500 en, and could be unlocked as early as the 3rd Floor. However, you had to fight your way through a gauntlet of enemies, avoid two FOEs, and take on an unavoidable Kuyutha FOE to get to the point (and even then it's not your priority; finding the warp point to avoid having to do all of what you just did again is). Also, each class only got one harvesting skill (excluding Survivalist), and the only other two classes that had Take were the Dark Hunter and Troubadour, neither of which were easy to incorporate early-game.

Here? Both are available from the same point, all classes can learn any and all harvest skills, and the item to unlock the oils (Hibiscus) sells for more than the oils cost, meaning you can actually make a profit off of it.

Oils in the first game were extremely broken; that is, a level 30 Landsknecht with a good sword and armor, Swords at level 10 and ATK Up above level 3, 5 Medica IIs and one Blaze Oil can completely solo the first boss. Granted, Fenrir and his Skolls all suffer from the same massive glaring weakness to Fire, but when you can take down a Skoll on the turn it shows up while Coldfang hits you for a piddly 38, you feel a certain sense of satisfaction not usually found in the middle of games localized by Atlus.

Now that I think about it, all of the bosses in Etrian Odyssey that summoned minions were like this; Cerunnos and his Curollers were weak to Volt, and the Royalant and her Guard, Blood, and Deathants were all weak to Ice (I don't know about the other bosses, but I assume they're the same way).

Whoops, looks like I went off on a rant again. I should try to stop doing that.

Next time: A Handy lesson on Status Effects.
