* AmericansHateTingle: When the film was released to America back in 1983, critics disliked the movie for having the Smurfs as supporting characters and Johan and Peewit as the main focus (which is ironic, considered this movie came out in Belgium before the cartoon series from Hanna-Barbera came along).
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Michel Legrand's classical scores are easily one of the best things to come from this movie.
* BrokenBase: Some fans would like this movie for staying faithful to the pre-1981 source material. Others (such as fans of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series) dislike it for the Smurfs (excepting Papa, Brainy and Grouchy) lacking their physical attributes and not having much of a personality (despite the song claiming that they do), as well as all of them not having enough screen time.
* {{Narm}}: To some, some of the character's voices in the United States/United Kingdom English dub don't match well with the characters. The electronically pitched-up British voices for the Smurfs in the UK dub can sound particularly odd for those used to the voices of the American shows and movies.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Among the actors who did the English dub were Michael Sorich as Hefty in his first role before he did the likes of [[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers Squat]], [[Anime/SailorMoon Rei’s Grandfather]], [[Anime/{{Naruto}} Gamabunta]] and [[Anime/{{Bleach}} Don Kanonji]].
** Brainy was done by Creator/RobertAxelrod in his first role before the likes of [[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers Lord Zedd]] and [[Anime/TheMysteryOfMamo Mamo]].
** Peewit was done by Creator/CamClarke in one of his earliest roles before the likes of [[WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles1987 Leonardo]], [[VideoGame/MetalGearSolid Liquid Snake]], [[WesternAnimation/TimonAndPumbaa Simba]] and [[WesternAnimation/BackAtTheBarnyard Freddy the Ferret]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Being made around the same era, the separate American dub could have ideally been made to update the film to the TV series, but features none of its voice cast.
* VocalDissonance: Lazy's '''''deep''''' voice (in the United Kingdom English dub) for starters and there's something about Mike Reynolds' voice for Papa (in the United States English dub) that's off
** The same goes for the Dutch dub, in which Papa and Brainy have notably different voices from the Hanna-Barbara cartoon series due to the movie having a different voice cast.
* {{Woolseyism}}: Despite its questionable voice over choices otherwise, the US dub adds extra dialogue without getting overindulgent about it, mostly over awkwardly silent areas or moments the characters' lips move but have no lines, or simply to make jokes land better (eg. in the original and UK edit, Greedy furiously smashes Brainy with his cake [[DisproportionateRetribution for silently tapping him on the shoulder]], in the US edit [[SmallNameBigEgo a very in-character]] Brainy badgers Greedy to [[TemptingFate "let him have it"]]...).
