1* FranchiseOriginalSin: This episode marks the beginning of Ned Flanders' {{flanderization}}, as several jokes are based on his incredibly mild manners and his extreme piety, neither of which had been shown in his previous appearances. Here however, they are largely just to pepper his personality from merely the AlwaysSomeoneBetter archetype he was beforehand, and he is still largely a passive NiceGuy (as he would remain for a few more seasons before they amped up the forcefulness of his religious scruples).
2* HarsherInHindsight: As a sign of his [[GoodFeelsGood goodhearted nature]], Ned requests that the word "loser" be removed from the contract as he considers it too harsh for his liking. In the later episode "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS8E8HurricaneNeddy Hurricane Neddy]]", [[UnstoppableRage he has no objections to throwing]] ''[[UnstoppableRage very]]'' [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech harsh words at the entire population of Springfield.]]
3* HilariousInHindsight: Bart asks Lisa for the name of 'those guys in chess who don't matter': pawns. He has figured out he's Homer's pawn in his one-sided feud with Ned. When the show's chess set came out, Bart was the pawn.
