* CatharsisFactor: Watching Mario giving Frank Hallet what-for via his SwordCane is very satisfying to watch indeed.
* CompleteMonster: Frank Hallet, son of Cora Hallet, the wealthiest woman in town, is a remorseless pedophile who instantly centers on Rynn Jacobs when he sees her alone. Constantly harassing and attempting to assault Rynn, Frank murders her pet hamster and tries to abuse her friend and LoveInterest Mario. Frank is well known in town for assaulting girls, having once been stopped by Officer Ron Miglioriti from assaulting a child he dragged into the bushes. When he learns his mother is dead, Frank's only concern is using it to blackmail Rynn into becoming his SexSlave.
* JerkassWoobie: Rynn has no problem killing to keep her independent lifestyle, but consider the fact that this whole scheme was kind of forced on her by her father and mind you he [[spoiler: was]] one of three people in the world Two of which only came into her life after he was gone who actually care about her. It's no wonder she was so determined to honor his wish; given her alternative solution to living alone would have been to live with her mother, one could see why she'd pick the former. Adding also to the harassment she receives from the Hallets and that her relationship with the boy she loves is always going to have to be secret, (or at least for the next three years or so) you just want to give the poor girl a hug and stat! The scene where she talks to is positively gut-wrenching.
* MagnificentBitch: Rynn Jacobs is a MinorLivingAlone following the death of her terminally ill father. Determined to maintain her independence, Rynn is adept at coming up with lies on the spot to explain away her father's absence when questioned about it, and at one point has her boyfriend Mario disguise himself as her father in order to placate a suspicious police officer. When pedophile Frank Hallet attempts to use his mother's death to blackmail Rynn into a tryst, Rynn poisons him with cyanide, having laced her own cup of tea in anticipation that Frank would suspect her of poisoning his cup and demand she switch with him.
* Narm: On occasion, the soundtrack breaks out in a funky "wakka-chikka" soundtrack better suited to a cop drama than a low-key thriller. It becomes even more glaring since the rest of the soundtrack consists of classical pieces and melancholy cello solos.
* ValuesDissonance:
** Frank Hallet is depicted as a pedophile and this is known in most of the town. It would be hard to picture Frank living openly in the town in the 21st century with both society having a harsher attitude towards pedophiles and because of harsher laws against them too like the sex offender registry.
** Not to mention a 13 year old Foster having to fight the filmmakers not to do a nude scene, in a film where the villain is a pedophile.
** In a slightly-less-egregious example, Rynn and Mario offer Officer Miglioriti some wine, jovially noting that it's okay because he's off-duty while not remarking that they're sending him off to drive after drinking.A single glass of wine probably isn't enough to impair a grown man, but you'd think a cop would still refuse the offer. Not to mention he just leaves a pair of very young, unsupervised teens with an open bottle of wine.
* TheWoobie: Mario. Having your disability thrown into your face repeatedly is bad enough, but to have it happen . Not to mention why he's crippled:
-->Mario: Polio shots.\
Rynn: (puzzled) Polio shots?\
Mario: (in a matter-of-fact tone) I have so many brothers and sisters my mother forgot who did and who didn't get them.
