* HarsherInHindsight: Actor James Murray, who played John Sims, was later brought down by alcoholism, became penniless and suffered an untimely death when he fell (or, by some accounts, jumped) into the Hudson River and drowned at the age of 35. The scenes of his character broken and desperate seem cruelly prophetic. Creator/KingVidor himself recalled meeting Murray begging on the streets and was shocked at his condition. He tried helping him but Murray ran away. Towards the end of his life, Vidor was planning to make a film about Murray but he couldn't get money.
* MemeticMutation: The automaton workers all leaping up at once and scurrying away from their desks for the exit and swarming through office doors.
** The camera zooming out to reveal John and his family as part of "the crowd".
* {{Narm}}: While the editing of the daughter's death was extremely good for the time, the driver's expression and steering makes it unintentionally seem as though he's determined to run her over, rather than trying to avoid her.
* TearJerker: The death of John Sims' father toward the beginning of the film.
** There's also the scene where John's daughter is run over by a motor truck and dies, it was heartbreaking for John and Mary.
** "MONTHS...ENDLESS MONTHS. The crowd laughs with you always...but it will cry with you for only a day."
* VindicatedByHistory: Despite the consistent critical favor for ''The Crowd'', it lost money in theaters when first released in 1928.
