* ArcFatigue: The second season is full of this. It started off strong but lost momentum the moment the gang reached New Orleans.
* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: When it was announced that ''ComicBook/{{Preacher}}'' would be adapted into a TV series, fans of the comic were cautiously optimistic. Much less so when it was announced that Seth Rogen would be in charge of the series to the point of decrying the show a failure. Nonetheless, the series made a good impression on the fans and managed to last four seasons.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Jesse Custer has developed into this in the second season. Somewhat subverted as the third season has expanded the character into JerkassWoobie territory.
* BrokenBase: "Dallas" has proven to be one of the most polarizing episodes of the show's short history. Either you love it for [[CharacterDevelopment its exploration of Jesse and Tulip's relationship,]] or you hate it for being a WholeEpisodeFlashback that, minus the Saint's return, doesn't advance the current plot.
* CompleteMonster:
** {{God|Is Evil}} Himself is a primordial being who existed before all creation. Growing lonely, God created the universe, Heaven and Hell, and angels and demons to keep Him company, which led to the eternal bloody war between the two races. [[PsychopathicManchild Unsatisfied]] with the love that the angels gave Him, God decided to create another species that would love Him more. First, He created the dinosaurs, which [[PhlebotinumKilledTheDinosaurs He wiped out]] after He saw one of them eating its own excrement. Then He created humanity and started [[ManipulativeBastard manipulating]] them into doing horrible things to see how much they loved Him, such as ordering Abraham to sacrifice his son, only stopping him at the last moment to make it look like a test of faith. At one point in time, after arranging the events that would take the lives of the family of the Saint of Killers, God decided He was getting bored with humanity. In the present day, escaping from Heaven, God leads the ancient Christian organization, the Grail, in preparing the Apocalypse, in order to [[KillAllHumans destroy all of humanity]] and replace it with another species, which He created to love Him above all.
** Season 3: Marie L'Angelle bargained [[DealWithTheDevil with Satan himself]] to make herself immortal by consuming the souls of others, collecting on those who do not pay for her voodoo services to do so. When her daughter Christina eloped with John Custer, Marie [[OffingTheOffspring ordered her stomach cut open]] as well as John's death, before [[GruesomeGrandparent forcing Jesse, her grandson, to suffer under her over the years]]. When Jesse returns seeking Marie's help to bring his LoveInterest, Tulip O'Hare, back to life, Marie forces him into a blood contract wherein she holds Tulip's soul as leverage and later takes Jesse's soul to force him to follow her orders.
* CrossesTheLineTwice:
** The RunningGag about the All-Saints Congregational sign.
** The pile of bodies in the hotel room (and the single one in the one next door) after the Seraphim is finally defeated.
** The ending of "Mumbai Sky Tower".
** [[spoiler:Eugene and Hitler escaping from Hell. The pit they escape through provides an alternate version of Eugene's worst experience, and it still involves Tracy attempting suicide. He tries again, and she still blows her brains out. It goes from horrifying to hilarious after a few times.]]
** [[spoiler:The montage of exploding Humperdoo clones in "The Tom/Brady", [[SoundtrackDissonance while "Waltz on the Beautiful Blue Danube, Op. 314" plays]].]]
*** And one episode after this, [[spoiler: all of the Humperdoo clones (and the original Humperdoo disguised as the rest) being released into the wild. We get a top-down view of thousands pouring out into the streets of a major city, several hitting random obstacles and even more dying in traffic as the rest wander off.]]
** [[spoiler:Herr Starr attempting to [[DrivenToSuicide hang himself]] after suffering so many humiliating injuries (or having them treated in humiliating ways)? [[CryForTheDevil Outright pitiable]]. Starr bungling said suicide, accidentally tearing his nipples off because of his chain getting caught on the noose, and having PottyFailure that leaks through his faucet-penis? You'll be both cringing and laughing at the same time.]]
* CryForTheDevil: [[spoiler:We get a flashback to Herr Starr's early life late in Season 4, in which we learn that he won a youth singing contest, only for [[KidsAreCruel the contest's losers]] to [[DisproportionateRetribution cut his right eye with a knife in retaliation]]. This flashback comes on the heels of him suffering many humiliating and disfiguring injuries (some of them through no fault of his own), including losing his genitals and having them replaced with a faucet, and having his right leg amputated, roasted, and fed to him by cannibals.]]
* DracoInLeatherPants: Due to his tragic past, a lot of fans are incredibly enamoured with the Saint of Killers and are prone to overlook his own horrific actions, most notably [[WouldHurtAChild beheading an entire classroom full of children]].
* DuelingShows: Mildly with ''Series/{{Outcast}}'' - the two premiered just a fortnight apart, each has a 10-episode run, both are based on comic books, were commissioned on the back of the success of ''Series/TheWalkingDead'' (''Outcast'' is actually based on another Kirkman series), and deal with themes of Christianity in contemporary America and demonic possession in a CrapsackWorld. However, so far, the "duels" seem to have mostly been done in the spirit of fun, with reviewers largely recommending that the shows pair well together.
* EvilIsCool: The Saint of Killers.
* GrowingTheBeard: From the beginning, viewers could tell that this show had potential, but the slow-burning plot combined with comic fans still adjusting to the AdaptationDistillation of the series led to a lot of fans writing off most of the first season as SoOkayItsAverage. Thankfully, the exciting WhamEpisode of the finale and the implication that the entire first season was just an ProlongedPrologue to the events of the comic series has generated a renewed interest in the show.
** Come the third season the beard has fully grown as the show now has a fully established MythArc.
* HesJustHiding: There are those who hope that some of the residents of Annville, [[spoiler:particularly Emily and her children (about whom WordOfGod is a bit ambiguous)]] might have left due to seeing the chaos ensuing before [[spoiler:the town got blown up]], and that some of the characters not seen or mentioned in the final season one episode [[spoiler:(the Schenck's son, the older of Tracy's brothers, etc.)]] might have been out of town.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Or HarsherInHindsight, depending on your point of view. In the Season 1 finale, an old man asked Fake God what happened to the dinosaurs. In Season 4 we find out - [[spoiler:God wiped them out because [[DisproportionateRetribution He saw one of them eating its own feces]]]].
** Also potentially HarsherInHindsight: Season 1 BigBad Odin Quincannon had his StartOfDarkness because he couldn't find any trace of a soul after dissecting his dead family. Come Season 2, we learn that souls not only physically exist in this universe, but can be extracted, traded and [[SoulEating ingested]].
** In Season 2, Jesse gets a lead on where God is, only for it to result in him finding a sex show featuring a man in a dalmatian costume. Cassidy still wants to pay to see the show, but Jesse leaves in disgust and disappointment. [[spoiler: It was God in the costume.]]
* HoYay:
** Jesse and Cassidy develop plenty over the course of the series, particularly on Cassidy's side. After one meeting with him, Cassidy becomes curiously loyal to Jesse. In "Finish the Song", after talking things out and patching up their friendship, Cassidy asks Jesse if they should shag now or just cuddle and hold hands. While he's clearly joking, it sure seems like he wouldn't say no to either if Jesse were unexpectedly up for it.
*** Season 3 off-handedly reveals that Cassidy is bisexual when he has a short-lived but very sincere relationship with Eccarius. So, even though Tulip is Cassidy's main love interest throughout the series, there's a good chance he genuinely would have been into it if Jesse had reciprocated - if there were any people Cassidy truly loved, it would be Jesse and Tulip.
** [=DeBlanc=] and Fiore qualify because of their ThoseTwoGuys status, though they [[AmbiguouslyGay may actually be a couple]] in canon: "Finish the Song" sees Fiore worrying that if they attempt to contact Heaven for help before they settle the mess with Genesis they'll be separated forever, and later in the same episode [=DeBlanc=] calls Fiore "my dear" and appears to give him an affectionate caress on the cheek when Fiore is feeling sad.
* JerkassWoobie: Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy have each developed into this.
* LoveToHate:
** Odin Quincannon. Any ounce of redeeming qualities Quincannon had [[spoiler:died with his family.]] Nobody would blame anyone if they felt that it should have been him that [[spoiler:Jesse sent to hell instead of Eugene.]] Yet Jackie Earle Haley is such a great actor with a terrific screen presence that he makes Odin compelling and fascinating. He also delivers Odin's many humorous lines very well, such as his blithely blunt speeches to his minions.
** Herr Starr is just as much of an entertaining HateSink in the show as he is in the comics, with "Pig" being almost entirely devoted to showing off his [[TheUnfettered uncompromising]] evil and Pip Torrens' performance.
** Marie L'Angelle is every bit the ManipulativeBitch that she was in the comic, with Season 3 repeatedly demonstrating her cunning and cruelty enough [[spoiler:to make her eventual defeat at the end of the season [[CatharsisFactor very satisfying]]]], and Creator/BettyBuckley helping to make her a memorable villain.
* {{Narm}}: The white text overlays have a tendency towards this, especially when they are describing things in an overly dramatic manner.
* NarmCharm: While the characters themselves can come off as overly dramatic, it's one of the factors that draw the viewers in.
* NauseaFuel:
** In the Season 3 debut episode, there is Marie ''drinking'' a mixture of Tulip's hair, fingernails and cornea [[spoiler: in order to attach her life to Tulip's]].
** [[FatBastard Allfather D'Aronique]] runs on this. In addition to being [[JabbaTableManners a very sloppy eater]], he's also a [[https://www.eatingdisorderrecovery.net/getting-help/the-dsm/436-30751-bulimia-nervosa-continued11 purging type]] bulimic (and he purges right after his meals in front of his cohorts). [[spoiler:Even his death is nauseating, with one of the visible scattered organs being his anus, which poops out Jesse's soul. A fight then breaks out between Jesse and Starr over said soul in the middle of the Allfather's scattered guts, and [[CrossesTheLineTwice Jesse swallows his soul as soon as he gets his hands on it]]]].
** In Season 4, Herr Starr loses his right ear, but then the Grail reconstructs it from [[GroinAttack Cassidy's harvested foreskins]]. It is as grotesque as it sounds. It later falls off on its own, complete with ooze ([[YankTheDogsChain right after Starr was told that he was beautiful]]).
* OneSceneWonder: Creator/FrankieMuniz has a brief but hilarious cameo in "Viktor".
* SophomoreSlump: The second season has been seen as this due to the very slow pacing, Tulip's [[spoiler:PTSD from her encounter from the Saint of Killers giving her a reduced role]] and Jesse's continuing villainy going unchallenged.
* SpoiledByTheFormat: Brad. If you have closed captions turned on, [[spoiler:you see that Brad is actually B.R.A.D. the entire time which removes the implication that Brad is a human operative of the Grail.]]
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: While it's understandable that some elements of the comic series simply wouldn't work with the timeline of the show (John Custer never fought in Vietnam, Arseface didn't get his face from the fallout of Kurt Cobain's suicide and there's little chance that Creator/BillHicks will make an appearance) there are still some comic purists who resent the show for particular changes like the abundance of CanonForeigner, everyone's AdaptationalVillainy, or completely overhauling Tulip's backstory/relationship to Jesse and making Jesse/Tulip/Cassidy into a LoveTriangle instead of the one-sided StalkerWithACrush infatuation Cassidy has for Tulip in the comics. Although this can be averted by simply viewing the television series as an UltimateUniverse to the comic series.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** As contested as Season 2 was, most fans agreed that the subplot with Hitler and Eugene was one of the highlights. Then comes Season 3, with both characters still being billed as main characters in the intro... but during the whole season, they've had not even half an hour of screentime.
** It would have been interesting to see where Annville would head to after the chaos of [[spoiler:discovering that God abandoned the Earth]] had eased up. It's a shame that we'll never know, since the whole town got blown up.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: It can be hard to really get into the series when every character is a deplorable asshole and whatever genuinely good characters the show has are revealed to be a BitchInSheepsClothing.
* WinBackTheCrowd: The common criticisms regarding the second season were its padding, unfocused plots, and a few out of character moments from its main characters. The third season, on the other hand, has been praised as the best season the series has with its faster paced storylines, solid character development, and the establishment of its grand MythArc.
