* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic[=/=]SongAssociation:
** [[http://youtu.be/6Vx4J_NtNPk "Maniac"]] by Michael Sembello, and "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILWSp0m9G2U Flashdance - What A Feeling]]" by Creator/IreneCara. With that said, hearing either of these songs is bound to bring up memories of this film to 80's enthusiasts.
** Joe Esposito's [[http://youtu.be/C526lxeHo-M Lady Lady Lady]] and Helen St. John's [[http://youtu.be/dGjk8JPu-Ns Love song from Flashdance]] are made of pure awesome too.
** [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y6miwjtmjGQ Manhunt]] is a very memorable and fast-paced dance number, which makes for a good MinorCharacterMajorSong moment.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: The movie is best recognized for the bucket scene and Alex either in a skin-tight black getup or outright wearing nothing but a sweatshirt that covers her naughty parts.
* CommonKnowledge: "Maniac" is often associated with the bucket dance, when it actually plays during a scene of Alex exercising, while a different song, "He's a Dream" by Shandi Sinnamon, plays over the bucket dance (this may stem from the music video, which plays scenes from the film including the bucket dance).
* CriticalDissonance: Critics, for the most part, didn't care for the movie when it came out (Creator/RogerEbert especially ripped it a new one). However, it was a box-office success and is fondly remembered by many people today as an 80s classic.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Alex's coworker Tina. She only has two or three notable scenes in the movie, but her dancing scene at the club is considered one of the best, if not the best, in the film (especially since her actress, Creator/CynthiaRhodes, was a professional dancer and thus didn't require a double for it, unlike how Jennifer Beals infamously did) and the RunningGag of her waiting for her boyfriend to call added to her popularity. It went to the point that Rhodes even went on to be cast in other '80s films about dancing (such as the ''Film/SaturdayNightFever'' sequel ''Staying Alive'' and, most famously, ''Film/DirtyDancing'') and even got a leading role in ''Film/{{Runaway}}''.
* {{Moe}}
** Alex's winning smile, her passion for dance that is tempered by insecurity about her skills, her protectiveness of her friends, and her sense of pride in her blue collar work all make her charming and endearing.
** Tina's awkward insecurities about her boyfriend, the funny way she struggles with some barbells during a TrainingMontage, and the sheer energy and dedication she puts into her MinorCharacterMajorSong dance number all make her surprisingly adorable for a small character.
* NeverLiveItDown: ''Magazine/{{MAD}}'' and ''Series/PopUpVideo'' each focused a lot of attention on Marine Jahan's uncredited performance as Jennifer Beals' dancing double, poking more fun at the fact that Beals didn't do her own dancing and needed a dancing double rather than the Beals's and Jahan's acting and dancing performances respectively.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/CynthiaRhodes plays a dancer with a MinorCharacterMajorSong scene several years before playing the tritagonist in [[Film/DirtyDancing a more famous eighties dancing movie.]]
* SignatureScene:
** Both the bucket and sweatshirt scenes have become StockParodies over the years.
** The scenes with the two {{Signature Song}}s, both featuring Alex dancing in a black getup: a wild pratice scored by "Maniac", and the audition to "Flashdance... What a Feeling" where Alex incorporates all of the styles she's observed throughout in the film.
** The MinorCharacterMajorSong "Manhunt" cabaret number, due to Creator/CynthiaRhodes not needing a double (unlike the other dancers in it) and having some great moves for an original song.
** Jeanie's ice-skating audition, due to the moves she employs and the SoundtrackDissonance once she begins to falter tugging at the heartstrings.
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: From the music constantly playing to the absolutely '80s outfits most of the characters wear, to the dancing that would seem weird today to the frizzy hair on every woman's head. "What a Feeling" and "Maniac" got popularized thanks to this movie and are widely seen as representative of the decade. And the main character is a woman working at a steel mill, which was a surprise back then and, while uncommon today, is no twist. (Nowadays, the twist would be the idea of ''anyone'' working at a steel mill. At least, in America.)
* WatchItForTheMeme: Can you name the main character? The plot? The actress who played the main character? Probably not. Have you seen the water bucket scene referenced more times than you can count? Yes.
* TheWoobie: Jeanie. She's a genuinely talented figure skater, but she botches the audition that she's spent two years practicing for. Her boyfriend dumps her without warning to pursue a pipe dream. TheCorruptor entices her into working at his strip club, and while she quits, her last scene has her crying as it sinks in how bad her life has gotten.
