* CompleteMonster: War is the leader of the Horsemen who holds a savage grudge against Death for leaving the group. Purging humanity every few thousand years, War seeks to usher in the end times and regularly butchers human settlements for her amusement. Upon Death taking a human wife, War cuts off her hand and kidnaps Death's son Babylon to mold him into the Beast of the Apocalypse, later installing "The Chosen" in places of power to help facilitate a great, devastating war. Obsessed with hurting Death, War seeks to turn Babylon against his father and make Death suffer before the end, all while torturing and killing as many people as possible before the end.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** There are many characters in this series, but any time Chamberlain is featured things are bound to be more interesting.
** The Ranger who tracks the members of the Chosen through nearly literal hell and high water, and doesn't let minor things like a massive war, the four horsemen of Apocalypse (who are rather impressed with his resolve, actually) or being shot half-dead slow him down.
* EvilIsCool: It's hard to not feel this way about the horsemen as well as certain members of the Chosen. In particular, Chamberlain has a very steady following due to his cool southern wit, his surprising marksman abilities, and his habit of being one step ahead of every other character in the series. Hickman has stated that he's his favorite character to write and it shows.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments:
** As Death and the Ranger are beating seven bells out of each other, Death angrily lays his story up until that point... which prompts the Ranger to stop fighting and offer his assistance to Death in finding but not before asking why Death couldn't have explained it all at the start. Death admits he was too pissed off to think straight.
* GrowingTheBeard: While the series was interesting from the beginning, issue 4 finally reunites Death with his wife, gives the first good glimpse at what the PRA looks like, and has the series' first amazing battle scene culminating in a beautiful page by Dragotta containing 18 panels.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Way more than expected, given how dark the series can be.
** The relationship between Prince John Freeman and Wolf; the two were raised together and consider themselves brothers in all but blood. If anything, John is closer to Wolf than to his actual brothers.
* TheWoobie: The Beast of the Apocalypse, although possibly less than it seems. And surprisingly who has had a very rough time of it.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Babylon is possibly the most powerful, dangerous character in the series. He's also a confused 10 year old with a robotic balloon.
