2* CompleteMonster: Cale Erendreich is a wealthy sociopath who delights in breaking down his victims. Developing this philosophy after murdering his father's hired hand for rejecting him, Cale would abduct and torture women before tossing them into a pit laced with lye. When Sean Falco discovers his latest victim Katie Hopgood whilst searching his house, Cale slowly ruins his life, beginning with having him and his friend Derek fired from their jobs; uploading a risqué photo of Sean's girlfriend on Website/Facebook and then brutally beating her; murdering Derek and his family to make it look like a murder-suicide; and forcing Sean to watch him shoot Katie into the lye pit, gleefully informing him that he'd bury him alive next to her after pinning his murders on him. Despite claiming to be motivated by correcting people, Cale is the embodiment of spite and pettiness.
3* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Sean is a thief and burglar not from necessity or desperation but mostly laziness and arrogance. He clearly comes from a comfortable background and can afford housing of his own, something many young adults his age could only dream of. His stepdad offers to put in a good word for him at a prospective job which Sean rudely refuses just because he thinks the standard 9-5 career is pathetic and boring, yet he makes no attempts to find legitimate alternative work, at a time where currently unemployment is a massive issue for many. Instead he robs from innocent and unsuspecting people, at one point even implying he's stolen from the elderly, and laughs about it. spoiler: And then there's the moment where he abandons a beaten and bound woman in a man's house instead of staying to help or until the police come because he doesn't want to get caught for breaking into the house in the first place. All of this plus David Tennant's far more charismatic and entertaining performance as Cale, means many viewers might see Sean's troubles later in the film as karma coming back to bite him.
