* EpicRiff: So many of their songs are built around catchy, often folky or proggy guitar riffs that they're pretty much "Epic Riff: The Band". Short list of examples would include, for starters, most songs from ''Tales'' and ''Elegy'', most of their singles, ''Sky is Mine'', ''Narrow Path'' and ''Shades of Gray''.
* GatewaySeries: For many people in Finland ''Tales'' was their gateway album to DeathMetal, due to its high focus on melodies and remarkable popularity for an album from a relatively underground genre.
* GrowingTheBeard: While ''Isthmus'' was mostly solid old-school death metal, ''Tales'' truly introduced the folk/prog elements that became part of their trademark style.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: The Joutsen Era has invoked this, due to the four consecutive albums sounding relatively similar (In retrospect, their first four albums had tremendous changes from DeathMetal to ProgressiveMetal). The band has also noted this, as they decided to take a new approach in ''Circle''.
* SignatureSong: ''Black Winter Day'', ''My Kantele'' and ''House of Sleep'' are probably the main contenders.
* SoOkayItsAverage: Band's [[CreatorBacklash general opinion]] of ''Far From The Sun''.
* TearJerker: ''Silent Waters'', a somber song about [[Literature/TheKalevala Lemminkäinen's mother trying to bring her son back to life]]. Especially the last few moments, when the lyrics repeat "my child, my son" over and over again.
