* Adorkable: James is awkward, doesn't know how to talk to people or show emotions, has weird hobbies and talents, and is somehow a little cute.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The show's soundtrack makes surprisingly excellent use of dream pop, indie rock, and even doo-wop, adding to the anachronistic atmosphere.
* CompleteMonster: Clive Koch has the dubious honor of being the only irredeemable character in the show. Hiding behind the mask of a polite and charming philosopher, Koch is in truth a vile sociopath who records himself violently raping women and takes pictures of their bodies as morbid trophies, with Ephebophile not even Alyssa being safe from him. The second season revealed even more of his dark and twisted nature, as he had manipulated a mentally-fragile woman named Bonnie into falling in love with him, treating her as a sex object and ignoring her attempts to communicate with him from prison.
* DiagnosedByTheAudience:
** It turns out that James but his monotonous speech patterns and difficulty connecting with people indicate that he's at least a little off.
** Bonnie has trouble connecting with people, walks and talks slowly, is easily manipulated by others, and doesn't see a problem in killing people.
* JerkassWoobie: Because of all the horrible shit they've had to deal with growing up, both James and Alyssa are pretty mentally and emotionally disturbed, and are pretty unpleasant people as a result. At least, before CharacterDevelopment starts setting in.
* OneSceneWonder:
** Emil, the security guard who nearly arrests Alyssa. He's large, intimidating, and serious ... but, when Alyssa does the right thing when it would've been very easy to save herself instead, he softens up ever-so-slightly and lets her go. As one of the few truly competent, decent adults in the series, you're left wishing he was in more than one episode.
** Frodo, the gas station clerk. Thanks to his awesomely absurd name, utter hatred of his job, and temporary kinship with the lead characters, he leaves quite an impact.
* SpecialEffectsFailure: In the beginning of the first episode, you can clearly tell that the bat James killed is plastic. Which is a bit strange, because all the other dead animals look convincing.
