!!YMMV for the multiple games or the series as a whole:
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Did Armquist actually, genuinely believe Crypto was a communist? Or was he merely using an analogy and knew full well that Crypto was an alien?
* AntiClimaxBoss: The games make you such a OneManArmy often times the bosses just can't keep up by the end. (Meteor Gun, anyone?)
* BrokenBase: The 2020 remake and ''Reprobed'' undergoes an ArtShift from being semi-realistic to being comical, but detailed, particularly the human characters. Some fans think it fits the series better and gives the cast and settings more personality, while others think it either looks too goofy to take seriously, or too much like ''VideoGame/{{Fortnite}}''.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-1Q86252hg The remake reveal trailer]] has Crypto making his attack on Earth to the tune of "Ich Will" by ''Music/{{Rammstein}}'' to great success.
** "Summer Samba".
** The first game's original soundtrack includes two unused remixes of "[[Music/TheBigBopper Chantilly Lace]]" and The Chordettes' "Lollipop". In respective order, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oirkKRkrHGM here they]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSepfNSZmGc are]].
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANSqJp_8PUk She's such a lovely sunny day./She makes the clouds evaporate.]]"
* CaptainObviousReveal: Silhouette, the BigBad of the first game, [[spoiler:being [[SamusIsAGirl a woman]]]]. There were a lot of hints, and if you read the thoughts of the Majestic agents, they blatantly state it and then try to cover it up:
-->'''Majestic Agent:''' Why does Silhouette give me these jobs? Was it because I [[spoiler:hit on her at the Christmas party...? Oh, wait, no one's supposed to know Silhouette's a chick.]] Scratch that thought.
* CatharsisFactor: Never before has the genocide of humankind been so much fun! How would you like to massacre an ungodly amount of people today? Well, you could be boring and zap them to death with your [[LightningGun lightning-spewing primary weapon]] or [[KillItWithFire superheated death ray]]. Or you could level entire city blocks into parking lots with sonic booms, chuck humans into the sky with PK, use their vehicles as wrecking balls and ''[[AnalProbing literally anal probe their brains out]]''. Just to name a few. And all of this is just from the first game!
* DemonicSpiders:
** The Majestic Agents in the first game. They can rip through your Holobob disguise, and use Furon-powered assault rifles that can easily kill Crypto. The psychokinetic mutants encountered later drain the concentration meter and render Crypto's PK or Hypnotize abilities useless. In the remake, the early areas of the game give them a slight downgrade in power, as they'll only use generic firearms. However, reaching Capitol City replaces the firearms with their energy guns, which are now fully capable of ripping Crypto to shreds.
** Tanks have a hefty amount of HP and hit hard, and are heavier to lift than normal vehicles. They also follow the player almost everywhere, making trying to disguise a chore. The remakes reduce their HP significantly, but they're still dangerous.
** EMP mines emit an EMP pulse that disables your weapons and jetpack, making it difficult to fight back against enemies (which, in the places where these show up, will usually be Majestic agents). Of course, Psychokinesis is still on the table, but it's not the best thing for fighting off swarms of enemies, and in later areas you encounter PSI Mutants, which can disable your PK abilities. The remake nerfs them quite a bit; not only can you see their radius on your minimap, but they also have a longer delay before firing, no longer disable your jetpack, and gained a weakness to (of all things) the Anal Probe, although they can now remove Holobob disguises. ''Reprobed'' gets rid of them completely.
** The remake introduces soldiers with bazookas, essentially a military counterpart to the agents with energy cannons in the first game. They can deal quite a bit of damage and are often hard to spot in the crowd of other soldiers, especially when you're in your saucer. You can catch their rockets with PK and throw it back at them and the Repulse-O-Tron stops them from hitting your saucer, but the rockets move fast enough that you need very good reflexes to pull this off.
* EnsembleDarkHorse: It's arguable that Pox is more popular than Crypto. Though considering who voices him (Creator/RichardStevenHorvitz, best known as the voice of ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim''), it's not hard to believe.
* EvilIsCool: Yes, the Furons are aliens invading Earth and sit somewhere between AntiHero and VillainProtagonist, but let's face it: playing as a psychic alien badass with the firepower to level entire cities is ''so much goddamn fun''.
* GoodBadBugs: It's possible to use flat objects and "surf" on them with psychokinesis, propelling you on the ground. This is only really possible with large objects, such as the Santa Modesta sign. In the remake, pretty much any flat surface that's movable can use used to surf.
* GoddamnedBats: SAM missile launchers in the first and second games. In the first game, they launch a single missile that is difficult to dodge and does a ton of damage to your saucer. Not to mention, they spawn in the ''worst'' of times during missions that are already difficult to begin with, such as during "It's a Wonderful Armageddon". The damage is toned down in the second game, and the tracking is made less potent, but now they launch ''three'' missiles at once, and they're now ''mobile''. Add to the fact that on high alert levels, they show up everywhere and can now move, and you will be swooping, ducking, weaving, and dodging to avoid the buggers, as they will fill the sky '''very''' quickly. And to top it all off, there is a graphical bug on the [=PS2=] version of the second game which removes the exhaust contrail on occasion, meaning you won't see the rockets until it's too late.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Crypto constantly getting [[RedScare accused of being a commie and Martian]] in the first game was funny enough, but then the second game reveals that [[spoiler:the Bolshevik Party did indeed consist of Martians in this world]].
** Crypto's BerserkButton about how he's not green is especially funny in the remake; With the BFG-137 skin, he is in fact mostly green.
* ItsShortSoItSucks: All of the games are relatively short. Some of the fanbase believe the first two games would have been even better if they were longer.
* ItsPopularNowItSucks: The series has gained a cult following, as well as fan haters, trolls, and the like. Doesn't help that the series took a dip in quality once other developers took over and tried to branch the franchise out with two games at once.
* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: Pandemic Studios did the first two games in the series, which were well-received. Locomotive Games did ''Big Willy Unleashed'', while Sandblast Games did ''Path of the Furon'', and as the {{Sequelitis}} entry below can attest to, neither developer have managed to live up to Pandemic's initial entries.
* PortingDisaster: The [=PS4=] port of the first game (though not the remake) is loaded with graphical glitches that weren't present in the original, and it has an annoying tendency to crash and/or freeze at the most inopportune of times.
* ScrappyMechanic: The fact you cannot use weapons at all in a body-snatched form is rather disappointing. On the bright side, however, it makes PK a little easier to use.
* {{Sequelitis}}: ''Big Willie Unleashed'' and ''Path of the Furon'' were held in ill-regard by many critics. The former was thanks to [[{{Flanderization}} flanderizing most of the main cast]] and pressing the ResetButton after the second game's ending, creepy graphics, and not really trying anything new in-comparison to the second game. ''Path of the Furon'', however, was just a flat out ObviousBeta.
* SpiritualAdaptation:
** The series is a pastiche of 50s AlienInvasion [[BMovie B-Movies]] such as ''Film/Plan9FromOuterSpace'' and ''Film/TeenagersFromOuterSpace'' with even the option to view those films.
** It could also be seen as an ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'' game in terms of tone, humor and even Richard Horvitz voicing ExpositionFairy Pox.
** The games also share the same tone and humor as ''Film/MarsAttacks'' minus the Martians and actually being set in [[TheFifties the 50s]].
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Many people claim that the changes in ''Big Willy Unleashed'' and ''Path of the Furon'' made them suck, and that they weren't nearly as good as the first two. This is also mostly blamed on the two developers who picked up the series after Pandemic was bought out by EA.
