Context YMMV / MeghanTrainor

Go To

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: A rather unfunny example of why Meghan's so divisive. Many of her songs sound anywhere from vaguely to horrendously bitchy, a problem that could easily be solved [[ItMakesSenseInContext if her lyrics centered on the actual problem she aims to call out]].
* BrokenAesop: "All About That Bass" is supposed to celebrate curves, but gives the impression that you need men to validate your appearance and jokingly denounces skinny people.
* BrokenBase:
** Some fans did not like the new angle she took with the music video for "No." Some felt it was too overtly sexual and not anything like Trainor. Others embraced it and enjoyed her new angle and new style.
** "All About That Bass" is celebrated by some people for being an example of body positivity for heavy set figures in modern music, but others see the song as a BrokenAesop that ''should'' have been about promoting body positivity as a whole and not just towards [[BigBeautifulWoman heavier women]]. Others took issue with the lyrics implying that self-confidence actually came from male validation.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Her song "Mom" is a very touching tribute to her mother (who appears on the song during the bridge).
* HilariousInHindsight:
** "All About That Bass" contains the lyric "And no I won't be no stick-figure silicone Barbie doll". In 2016, Mattel released a new line of Barbies featuring a curvy Barbie to add weight diversity to the line.
** Could also double as HarsherInHindsight, Trainor's second video off her new album, "Me Too" was taken down the same day it was put up after Trainor realized her waist had been digitally manipulated to appear smaller. She was not pleased, to say the least.
** The song "I Love Me" from ''Thank You'', right at the beginning of the first verse, has the line "They'll make jokes about my name". Many of the people who hate her stuff call her "[[FanNickname Meghan Meghans]]".
* RefrainFromAssuming: "No Excuses" is not called "Someone Else", even though those words show up way more in the song than the title does.
* SignatureSong: "All About That Bass" and "Like I'm Gonna Lose You", and also "Marvin Gaye" if you consider her duet songs.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: "Dear Future Husband" sounds a ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKQRHlq0F08 lot]]'' like Olly Murs' song "Dance With Me Tonight".
%%Which video?
%%* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Some fans are not pleased with the new direction Trainor took with her newest video, preferring her as a blonde and the less sexual overtones of her previous videos.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: The protagonist of the "Better" video. We're shown that her grandfather is in jail, but we don't know the offense and he seems to genuinely love her. Thus, it seems less like he's a deadbeat grandpa who's stretched his granddaughter's patience beyond love, but that she's an ungrateful and unnecessarily rude granddaughter who doesn't accept his love.
