* CompleteMonster: See [[Monster/BetrayalAtHouseOnTheHill here]].
* MemeticMutation: Because of the game's theme of exploring a Haunted House with several mysteries, some of the games' owners have taken to modding their copies to [[https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic123818_md.jpg include]] [[https://boardgamegeek.com/camo/9e48de098c3438dcf29f7c583654df59e2bb2e85/687474703a2f2f69313235322e70686f746f6275636b65742e636f6d2f616c62756d732f68683537332f4a6566665f425a2f73636f6f627967616d652e6a7067 characters]] from [[Franchise/ScoobyDoo Scooby Doo.]]
** AscendedMeme: This has led to the announcement of a standalone game, [[https://avalonhill.wizards.com/betrayal_mm Scooby-Doo: Betrayal at Mystery Mansion]], releasing on July 24th, 2020. While the game is Lighter and Softer, the Scooby Gang are compatible with all the other games just fine.
* ParanoiaFuel:
** Anyone could turn out to be the Traitor, and you won't have any idea ''who'' until the Haunt begins. That player who's doing well for themselves and becoming your strongest ally could become your worst enemy... or your best line of defense.
** And some Haunts even hide who the Traitor is, meaning they could work alongside you until around where you complete your goal and swipe it from you when you're about to complete the objective. ''Or'' they could be on your side and be legitimately working towards the goal, meaning impeding them would only hurt your progress and make you look like the Traitor.
** Several events are very good at this, like the ambiguous good ending of [[spoiler: Evil Twins]], or any event in which the explorers were actually invited to the mansion, like "A Little Night Murder" and "The Feast", only for things to go terribly wrong.
** The original game's haunts almost always had a traitor, so players familiar with the original game won't be surprised that the prologue of ''Betrayal Legacy'' has one of the players turn out to be a traitorous witch. [[spoiler:Except that ''no one'' actually is a witch; everyone was just driven insane by some evil influence.]]
* ScrappyMechanic: The haunt "Murderball" from ''Widow's Walk'' tries to do a gimmick where ''everyone'' is the Traitor, but is generally disliked due to its confusing execution.
