* BrokenBase: Many, many things, but the biggest frustration stems from the matchmaking - which can throw a team full of archers against a team full of [[CurbStompBattle shock cavalry.]] Cavalry has also split the base - whether it's balanced, unbalanced, or belongs in Duel Mode at all.
* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: In Duel Mode, pikes. They're long, do good damage, and a whole team using them can easily poke any enemies to death before they get near. Also, the infamous [[LethalJokeWeapon shovel]].
* CurbStompBattle: Cavalry versus anything that can't fight well against it, at least in an open field.
* DemonicSpiders: Cavalry in general has gained this reputation, due to being able to crush infantry underfoot and their high speed. Pikes and dense formations counter them in Command Mode, but in Duel Mode unless you carry a pike in your pocket you'll be a sitting duck to anyone with a long weapon on horseback.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: After Lu Bu retreats in the battle of Xiapi, there is a cutscene that plays of his cavalry riding across a closing drawbridge - leaving behind his poor foot soldiers, some of whom cling desperately to the raising bridge before falling into the moat with a pitiful scream. The rest mill about and glance back at the players with a wonderful expression of [[OhCrap dawning terror]].
* GameBreaker: The Jingzhou Long Shu, which is a Wei Pikeman weapon that's actually an enormous spiked mace mixed with a lance - it's nearly three meters long, deals huge blunt damage, and ''can be used on horseback'' unlike almost every other pike. When used by a skilled player, it's all but unbeatable.
** Also, teamwork. Having friends you make a team and actually communicate with can easily turn the match in your favor - to the point that one of the biggest complaints from the playerbase is that five-man premade teams can be matched against an enemy team of randoms.
* GoddamnedBats: In Epic War, catapults. They fire fast, have great aim, and can kill your whole squad in a couple volleys; this has led to a bizarre meta where players leave their troops at the mission's start until they can reach and take out the catapults.
* GoodBadBugs: Occasionally when you level up instead of the usual fanfare of trumpets and cheers you'll hear a heavily accented voice scream ''I will kill you at once!''
** One of the Wu weapons is a [[WoodenKatanasAreEvenBetter wooden greatsword]]. Despite being made of wood, it's actually a pretty good weapon - and when you finish off a defeated foe with it, you slice their guts out. With a blunt stick.
* ScrappyMechanic: Horses can stun almost anyone due to their heavy weight and high speed - unless you use a long weapon, this means it's easy to just [[CherryTapping repeatedly run someone over until they die]]. While this is pretty much TruthInTelevision, it's heavily debated on whether this makes for good game design.
* SpiritualLicensee: Owes much to VideoGame/MountAndBlade and Creator/{{Koei|Tecmo}}.
