My guess is that she has always been an "annoying nerd" who could never get anyone to like her, the popular girls had always hated her, and the roly-poly thing were just Brittnay and [=MacKenzie=]'s way of getting her to leave them alone. That would also explain why Rachel is so obsessed with wanting popularity and to be friends with them, and why she can't just switch schools or find another group to hang out with that's more worth her time.
