We never see Nancy in a position where she was likely to fall asleep after she seemingly defeated Freddy, yet her mother was killed by Freddy at the end of the film in what could have only been a dream. Everything that appeared to have happened, from Nancy and Quentin fighting Freddy in the "real" world to her mother's murder, was a part of Nancy's dream and was just Freddy messing with her.
