7 | In November of 1978 he went on an official visit to UsefulNotes/{{Guyana}}, to investigate reports that Reverend UsefulNotes/JimJones of the Peoples Temple was holding followers against their will at the remote Jonestown compound. Ryan's visit instigated a crisis within the Jonestown community, with several members asking to accompany Ryan as he left. Ryan survived a stabbing at Jonestown, but was one of five people killed by a Temple gun squad at a nearby airstrip as they were waiting to board a plane. Ryan, who was 53 when he died, is the only member of the US Congress to have ever been killed in the line of duty. |
