2	Curaçao (Dutch: ''Curaçao''; Papiamento: ''Kòrsou''), formally the '''Country of Curaçao''' (Dutch: ''Land Curaçao''; Papiamento: ''Pais Kòrsou''), is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in UsefulNotes/TheCaribbean, just north of UsefulNotes/{{Venezuela}}. It includes the main island of Curaçao and the uninhabited Klein Curaçao ("Little Curaçao"). The capital and largest city is Willemstad.

4	Originally inhabited by the Arawak people, the Spanish were the first Europeans to get to the islands, and enslaved most of the Arawak as their labour forces, sometimes forcibly relocating survivors to other colonies where workers were needed. After UsefulNotes/TheEightyYearsWar and official independence of the Netherlands from UsefulNotes/{{Spain}} in 1634, Dutch colonists started to occupy the island, and the Dutch West India Company founded the capital of Willemstad on the banks of an inlet called the Schottegat. The natural harbour of Willemstad proved to be a good place for a trading post, and commerce, shipping and [[PirateTropes piracy]] became Curacao's most important economic activities. It also acted as a center for the Atlantic slave trade in 1662, with slavers often bringing slaves here from UsefulNotes/{{Africa}} for sale elsewhere in the Caribbean, as well as for sale in UsefulNotes/SouthAmerica. The island switched between British, Dutch and French control in the 18th and 19th centuries, but the Dutch got back permanent control of the territory in 1815 after the end of UsefulNotes/TheNapoleonicWars.

6	The island is noted for its colonial architecture, with many of their buildings being a mix of Dutch and Spanish styles, and the capital, Willemstad, being designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its wide range of historic buildings. Landhouses and West African style kas di pal'i maishi (former slave dwellings) are also scattered all over the island, with some being restored and available for visits. The culture of the island also has a noticeable Jewish influence, due to Sephardic Jews with ancestors from the Iberian Peninsula settling there with the Dutch. Curaçao has the oldest active Jewish congregation in the Americas, dating to 1651. It also has the oldest synagogue of the Americas in continuous use, the Curacao synagogue, which was completed in 1732. The island has a strong baseball tradition compared to most other non-Hispanic Caribbean countries, with native son Andruw Jones's star turn in TheNineties causing a popularity boom that eventually led to them winning the 2004 Little League World Series behind a pair of future Major Leaguers, Jurickson Profar and Jonathan Schoop[[labelnote:*]]Curacao would come just short of defending their title, with Profar still young enough to compete[[/labelnote]].

14	->Designed in 1984 by Martin den Dulk, the flag is a blue field with a horizontal yellow stripe slightly below the midline and two white, five-pointed stars in the canton. The blue symbolizes the sea and sky (the bottom and top blue sections, respectively) divided by a yellow stroke representing the bright sun which bathes the island, the two stars represent Curacao and Klein Curaçao, but also 'Love and Happiness', and the five points on each star symbolize the five continents from which Curacao's people come.
