* BillingDisplacement: Both Creator/{{Sabu}} and Creator/ConradVeidt are billed above the unknown John Justin, who is the actual protagonist of the film.
* CaliforniaDoubling: Arizona doubled for Africa. Some scenes were planned to be shot in Africa, but UsefulNotes/WorldWarII put the kibosh on those plans.
* CreativeDifferences: The first director, Ludwig Berger, was dismissed because of creative differences with producer Alexander Korda. Berger envisioned the picture as a lyrical black-and-white fantasy film, whilst Korda believed that it should be a big, bold epic in color. Korda's brother, Vincent Korda, had made some color sketches which proved to be the final tipping point that convinced Alexander the film should be shot in color and that another director should be brought in to fulfill his vision.
* ExecutiveMeddling: When the film was shot in America, the stricter censor codes at the time insisted that the actresses' costumes had to be buttoned all the way up to the top. You can spot the American-shot scenes from the British ones based on this.
* FakeNationality: British actors play Arabian characters. The German Conrad Veidt as well. Sabu is borderline, as he was Indian - and some have theorised that some of ''Literature/OneThousandAndOneNights'' originated in India.
* MidDevelopmentGenreShift: At some point during production, the film was being written as a musical. The finished film has three songs, but others were written, with recordings of some surviving, including one verse of Rex Ingram singing a song written for the genie.
* ReferencedBy: It is the subject of a lot of {{Shout Out}}s. ''WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}}'''s Abu is a monkey version of Sabu's character, and Jafar is Conrad Veidt. Not to mention that the Sultan of Agrabah basically ''is'' the Sultan of Basra, as is the King in ''WesternAnimation/TheThiefAndTheCobbler''. The ''Aladdin'' series also features the Blue Rose of Forgetfulness in one episode.
* TroubledProduction: Initially filmed in England but the Blitz forced them to relocate to America. There was such a long break in production that Creator/{{Sabu}}'s scenes had to be re-shot - since he had grown several inches. Producer Alexander Korda was so demanding that the film went through about six different directors.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/HenryFonda was intended for the role of Jaffar. Alexander Korda had seen him in two Technicolor films and thought the actor would look good in close-ups.
** Creator/VivienLeigh was cast as the princess but when she won the coveted role of [[Film/GoneWithTheWind Scarlett O'Hara]], the part was given to June Duprez.
** The first director Ludwig Berger imagined the film as a lyrical black-and-white fantasy. Producer Alexander Korda however felt it should be big, bold and colourful.
** Creator/MichaelPowell had to leave the director's chair along with several key crew members to direct ''Film/TheLionHasWings'' - a propaganda film about the RAF, at Winston Churchill's request.
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: According to Creator/MichaelPowell, there was never actually a complete script for this film, and changes were constantly made throughout production.
* WrittenByCastMember: The film's screenwriter Miles Malleson, also plays the toy-obsessed Sultan of Basra.
