* AscendedFanon: On a marketing scale, while the Japan dev team did not actually rely on the ''Sonic X-treme'' project for materials and inspiration, the fans have noticed the similarities, and Sega of America appears to welcome the comparisons.
* DevelopmentGag:
** The Deadly Six Edition features bosses from ''VideoGame/NightsIntoDreams''. ''VideoGame/SonicXTreme'' was going to feature bosses designed with the [=NiGHTS=] engine, which could be one of the few intentional references to ''X-Treme'''s development.
** Sonic knocks billiard balls into their holes as he rolls around whilst entombed inside a giant snowball in Frozen Factory. Believe it or not, [[http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_Saturn there was a billiards mini-game in one of the many scrapped Sonic games from the mid-1990's, where Sonic had to act as the cue ball.]]
* FirstAppearance: Of the Deadly Six.
* FranchiseKiller: The 3DS version was this for a certain value of "franchise." The Creator/{{Dimps}}-made line of handheld ''Sonic'' games were already shifted from being original titles to [[ReformulatedGame reformulated versions]] of the mainline console games thanks to the underperformance of ''VideoGame/SonicRushAdventure'', but the negative reception to their 3DS version of ''Lost World'' ended the handheld line entirely, leading to Dimps retiring from the ''Sonic'' franchise. The next two handheld games in the franchise, ''VideoGame/SonicBoom: Shattered Crystal'' and ''Fire & Ice'', were spinoffs in an AlternateContinuity, and developed by Sanzaru Games, but their own poor reception seems to have merely killed the handheld line entirely (though the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch marking the end of dedicated handheld systems also played a factor).
* PreOrderBonus:
** Pre-ordering the game gives the player ''25 extra lives'' on top of the regular four.
** The first DLC pack for the Wii U version was exclusive to pre-orders, and granted access to the Nightmare Zone.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: According to an interview with Creator/KenPontac, Orbot and Cubot were almost scrapped from ''Lost World'' and the series, and he had to ask for their inclusion in the story. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xthq8oKN2ec The source is]] the interview done by Roger from ''Webvideo/SonicDissected'':
--> ''Cubot and Orbot, yes. They almost got cut from the series. There were some questions from one of the groups of producers. They were great, but Eggman wouldn't have that kind of relationship with a pair of robots, and we ended up winning the argument because even if he doesn't or didn't have that, you can have it now if's really funny and works.''
* WordOfGod: The Deadly Six were created by Sonic Team, according to Ken Pontac. Pontac and Graff only wrote their dialogue and the story while following an outline.
* YouSoundFamiliar: After being away from the franchise for years due to [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure E-102 γ]] being destroyed and [[Anime/SonicX Dark Oak]] being exclusive to his series, Creator/JojiNakata returns to the ''Sonic'' series as Zavok.
