* AdoredByTheNetwork:
** As of November 2013, this movie is occasionally played on Creator/{{E}} at least once a week.
** As of 2019, Creator/{{Freeform}} loves to show the movie several times a week.
* CareerResurrection: Before this movie, Creator/PierceBrosnan's career was pretty stagnant, with his only real high profile role being the lead in ''Series/RemingtonSteele''. He was considered for his [[Film/JamesBond most famous role]] as early as the mid 1980s but his TV contract put a stop to that. Thankfully, after Creator/TimothyDalton retired as James Bond and thus finally landing the [[Film/GoldenEye role of 007]].
* TheCastShowoff: Creator/RobinWilliams has always been famous for his impersonations - and this is a movie revolving around it where he impersonates a Scottish female [[Creator/FredRogers Mr. Rogers]].
* {{Corpsing}}: Pierce Brosnan is clearly trying not to lose it at one point during the dinner scene. Quite glaring considering his character is supposed to be annoyed.
* TheDanza: Todd the Bartender, played by [[Series/InPlainSight Todd Williams]], Robin Williams' brother.
* DeletedRole: Polly Holliday's part as the antagonistic next door neighbor, Gloria Chaney, was originally a prominent supporting character and had a much larger role in the film. Due to time constraints, most of her scenes were cut. As a result, Gloria is only seen at the film's beginning and briefly in the background during the Mercedes Benz scene, and BillingDisplacement results when a throwaway character with just one line is listed more prominently in the credits than several principals (All of her deleted scenes were included as special features on DVD).
* DevelopmentHell: Harvey Fierstein wrote a stage musical adaptation in 2015, with music by Music/AlanMenken. It finally opened in early 2020... only to almost immediately close due to the pandemic shutdown. Although it did reopen in late 2021, struggling ticket sales forced it to close for good in early 2022.
* FakeAmerican: Lydia Hillard, the eldest daughter, is played by Canadian-born Lisa Jakub.
* FakeBrit: Technically Creator/PierceBrosnan, who is Irish but moved to London when he was ten. Daniel is an in-universe example in his Mrs. Doubtfire disguise.
* HarpoDoesSomethingFunny: Creator/RobinWilliams riffed so much that Creator/ChrisColumbus said that there's enough footage to make separate G, PG, PG-13, and R cuts of the film. Columbus said that the released version is the definitive cut of the film, but that he'd be willing to make a documentary of its production that includes some R-rated version of scenes.
* MoneyDearBoy: Creator/PierceBrosnan's career had entered a slump and he was in need of paying work when he landed the role of Stu. The fact that he got to work with Creator/RobinWilliams and Creator/SallyField was an amazing bonus.
* OneBookAuthor: Robin Williams' older brother Robert Todd Williams only played a small part in the film under a stage name, and then went back to his job as a vintner, without ever acting again.
* QueerCharacterQueerActor: Openly gay actors Creator/HarveyFierstein and Scott Capurro as Daniel's brother Frank and his boyfriend Jack, respectively.
* RealitySubtext:
** Creator/SallyField was going through a divorce during filming.
** Creator/RobinWilliams' character walks off the set after he's forced to play a cartoon character who smokes. Around this time, Williams was in a very acrimonious feud with Disney over the fact that they used him for marketing to promote ''WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}}'', which he explicitly tried to stop them from doing. They even went so far as to sabotage the production of ''WesternAnimation/FernGully'', which Williams also worked on, just so he could devote his energies to ''Aladdin''.
* RealLifeRelative: Creator/RobinWilliams' brother plays the bartender in the pool scene.
* StillbornFranchise: Talk of a sequel began in 2003, with a script being written by Bonnie Hunt. Creator/RobinWilliams was set to return in disguise as an old nanny like in the first movie. Due to problems with the script, re-writing began in early 2006 as Robin was allegedly unhappy with the plot. The film was expected to be released in late 2007, but following further script problems, the sequel was declared "scrapped" in mid 2006. The sequel's story was originally said to involve Williams, as Mrs. Doubtfire, moving close to his daughter's college, so he could keep an eye on her. Serious discussions regarding the sequel re-ignited in April 2014, with an announcement that Robin Williams and Creator/ChrisColumbus would be teaming up with Fox 2000 to produce the sequel. Williams' sudden death just four months later ultimately sealed the project's fate once and for all. No one replaced him either.
* StuntDouble: No, that's not Robin Williams setting his blouse on fire. That's a stunt double, and a pretty obvious one at that. However, first time viewers are likely to miss it because the fire and frenetic action distracts from the stunt double's face.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: Daniel's scheme of calling several times as various nannies would not work today as Miranda would most likely figure out that the caller ID is the same for each nanny. He would have to use more elaborate means such as using various phones (workplace phones, prepaid or borrowed cellphones, what few payphones still remain, etc.), spoofing his caller ID or sending emails from various throwaway addresses (albeit at the cost of the whole ManOfAThousandVoices shtick).
** The musical acknowledges this, by having Daniel hack Miranda’s email password, so that all of the nanny applications would route to him, and Miranda wouldn’t see any decent ones. And then calling in as the fake applicants he created from a presumably blocked number. Similarly, Mrs Doubtfire gets the kids to do their homework at first by turning off the WiFi and parental blocking their phones until they finish. A video of Mrs Doubtfire working for Miranda goes viral, which contributes to the social worker’s suspicious he’s lying about his “sister”.
* ThrowItIn:
** Creator/MaraWilson ad-libbed the princess line.
** Creator/RobinWilliams also ad-libbed his dialogue during the scene where he's serving tea to Mrs. Sellner with the cake icing on his face. The icing mixture applied to his face for the scene was rapidly melting under the hot set lights, causing it to liberally drip off his face. Being a master of improvisation, Williams instead turned this messy occurrence into a moment of comedy gold for the film.
* VoicedDifferentlyInTheDub: Daniel's disguise is completely convincing in the original version, including the voice he uses for Mrs. Doubtfire. In some of the dubs, the voice actor performing Daniel's dialogue simply does an obvious burlesque of a man imitating a woman's voice, dramatically altering the effect by rendering Mrs. Doubtfire a PaperThinDisguise.
* WagTheDirector: One draft of the screenplay had Daniel and Miranda getting back together. Both Creator/RobinWilliams and Creator/SallyField had gone through divorces and raised concern that this would give false hope to children that their parents would simply get back together in time.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/WarrenBeatty was Anne Fine's first choice for the role of Daniel Hillard before Creator/RobinWilliams was cast. Fine thought it would be hysterical to see Beatty dressing up and pretending to be an elderly woman due to Beatty's well-known reputation of being a [[TheCasanova charismatic womanizer.]]
*** Creator/TomHanks, Creator/BillMurray, Creator/BryanCranston, Creator/HarrisonFord, and Creator/MelGibson were considered for the titular part as well before the casting of Williams.
** Creator/TimAllen was offered the role of Stu Dunmeyer before the casting of Creator/PierceBrosnan. Allen turned it down due to filming commitments with ''Series/HomeImprovement''.
** Creator/BlakeLively was the runner-up for the role of Natalie Hillard before Creator/MaraWilson was cast.
** The movie's ending changed several times. The first script had [[spoiler:Daniel and Miranda becoming AmicableExes]] as they do in the finished film. The original scriptwriter was fired, and a different ending was written [[spoiler:where they remarry]]. This was changed after executives realized that they didn't want to give off the message that [[spoiler:all divorced parents eventually get back together]].
** Stuart was supposed to be more of a typical {{Jerkass}}--wanting to send the kids OffToBoardingSchool, etc.
** Creator/ChrisColumbus tried to get a sequel off the ground for a long time (despite the source novel not having any), but Robin Williams was unsatisfied with every script. In a tragic twist, it finally did get some forward momentum in 2014, but Williams' suicide that year naturally ended any chance of it, as Columbus felt it'd be impossible to find [[TheOtherDarrin anyone else]] who could match Williams' talent.
