Context Trivia / Haven

Go To

* ActingForTwo:
** Cristián de la Fuente in "Friend or Faux."
** [[spoiler: Acting for Five: Creator/EmilyRose as Audrey Parker, Lucy Ripley, Sarah Vernon, and as of Season 4, Lexie [=DeWitt=] and Mara. And, finally, Paige.]]
* ApprovalOfGod: Despite the loose connection to the book, Stephen King was very supportive of the series
* CaliforniaDoubling: PlayedWith. The series is set in Maine and filmed in Nova Scotia. While Nova Scotia is doubling for Maine, the fact that Nova Scotia is on the east coast and geographically close to Maine means the aesthetic is very similar. The outdoor shots of Haven look very mid-coast Maine. In some cases, even ''moreso'' than ''actual'' coastal Maine towns.
* DirectedByCastMember: Creator/JasonPriestley (Chris Brody) directed "Lockdown" and "Real Estate", Creator/LucasBryant (Nathan Wuornos) directed "Enter Sandman", and Creator/ColinFerguson (William) directed "Just Passing Through".
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: "Recap/HavenS3E12Reunion" (in which there is a shooting at an alumni reunion) and "Recap/HavenS3E13ThanksForTheMemories" were pulled at the last minute due to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, with both episodes airing on January 17, 2013 instead.
* EnforcedMethodActing:
** The actors are never told spoilers, so that their reactions to any new development or revelation is genuine. The actors have expressed in interviews that they were dying to learn the truth about The Troubles and Audrey's origins as much as the fans.
** Creator/EmilyRose has stated that she used her frustration at finding out that [[spoiler: she isn't really Audrey Parker]] and all of the training to be a believable F.B.I agent and the emotional life she had been building as an actor was basically not true as motivation and emotional subtext for how her character must feel about her own life.
* ForcedPerspective: There's a ''[[HugeGuyTinyGirl 13-inch]]'' height difference between Creator/EmmaLahana and Creator/EricBalfour, but it's hardly noticeable most of the time thanks to creative camera angles. They're often on different planes within a shot, such as one of them in the mid-ground while the other is in the foreground, which makes them appear much closer in height than they actually are. It's used so often that scenes that don't are jarring, like in "When the Bough Breaks," where a close-up has them talking eye-to-eye...only for the wide shot to reveal they're eye-to-eye because she is standing and he is ''sitting down.''
* ItsASmallWorldAfterAll: The actors for Dwight and Nathan found out they grew up 20 minutes away from each other. Creator/EmilyRose (Audrey) noted they even share a very similar sense of humor.
* IWantYouToMeetAnOldFriendOfMine: Minor character [=McHugh=] is one of Dwight's helpers and is portrayed by [[Wrestling/{{Christian}} William Reso]]. Reso's also best friends with Adam Copeland (who plays Dwight) and they had [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_and_Christian a successful wrestling career together]] before Haven.
* MutuallyFictional: ''Haven'' has an interesting relationship with the larger Creator/StephenKing canon. The writers are hyper-aware it's based on a King novella, and love a good MythologyGag, but they aren't treated equally. Criminals are released from [[Film/TheShawshankRedemption Shawshank Penitentiary]], characters visit or grew up in Derry, and Audrey receives a book in the ''[[Literature/{{Misery}} Misery Chastain]]'' series as a gift, but Duke also owns a copy of ''Literature/TheTommyknockers'' and Howard dismissively refers to Audrey's work with the Troubled as being like ''Literature/ChildrenOfTheCorn.'' ''The Tommyknockers'' being fictional is especially [[CelebrityParadox weird]], since the series takes its name from that particular work.
* OutOfHolidayEpisode: Invoked in the Christmas episode "Silent Night," which was released around Christmas in reality but took place in July InUniverse. Someone's trouble was creating Christmas in Haven [[spoiler: by trapping the town in a snowglobe,]] and only Audrey, who is immune to the Troubles, knew something was wrong. Everyone else just assumes she's a Grinch for not liking Christmas (and thinks she's crazy when she says Christmas is ''not'' in July).
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/ClaudiaBlack's character (Moira) is rather frumpy, talks in an American accent, and is a total {{Jerkass}}.
** Creator/ColinFerguson, known for playing genial, bumbling {{Everyman}} [[Series/{{Eureka}} Jack Carter]], turns out to be both [[spoiler: evil and the BigBad of Season 4.]]
** Croatoan, The BigBad of the series, a quiet, gentle, soft-spoken sociopath is played by [[spoiler: LargeHam Extraordinaire, ''Creator/WilliamShatner''.]]
** John Dunsworth was best known to most audiences for playing the antagonistic, perpetually drunken jerkass Jim Lahey on Series/TrailerParkBoys. Here he plays a decent, sober, logical fellow.
** One of the things that makes Creator/WilliamShatner's role so unsettling is his abandonment of his LargeHam tendencies in favor of being a SoftSpokenSadist. It's terrifying.
* RealLifeRelative:
** Creator/LucasBryant's wife Creator/KirstyHinchcliffe plays Rebecca Rafferty, a minor cop in Haven PD starting in season 4.
** Creator/JohnDunsworth's (Dave) daughter Molly plays Vickie.
* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Jennifer is killed off in the Season 5 premiere because Creator/EmmaLahana had to go home due to a family emergency (she's from New Zealand and the show is filmed in Nova Scotia).
* ThoseTwoActors:
** Creator/EmilyRose (Audrey) and Creator/LucasBryant (Nathan) starred in a 2010 movie called ''Perfect Plan''.
