* ActingForTwo: Creator/ZoeBell played the Tall Witch at the beginning of the film, and also did stunts for several other characters.
* ActorAllusion: Hey it's [[Film/TheAvengers2012 Hawkeye]] using a crossbow!
* AwesomeDearBoy:
** The main reason this film was made and why Creator/JeremyRenner was in it. He describes being hooked simply from seeing a storyboard of Hansel and Gretel walking away from a witch burning at the stake, which is indeed in the finished film.
--> "This was a fairy tale with no stress like the other action movies I've done recently. I was having so much fun hanging on a wire like Peter Pan, hanging onto a broom and doing other crazy stuff."
** Gemma Arterton signed on because she loved how much cursing there was in the script, and that her character was sexual but not having sex, "which is a change for me because usually in my films I'm sleeping with somebody."
* CaliforniaDoubling: Although primarily shot in Germany, a couple of re-shoots were done in California, particularly TheStinger.
* CostumeBacklash: Sort of. Famke Janssen was unprepared for how much work went into the prosthetic makeup, which would sometimes take three hours to apply, and made it tricky for her to adjust her acting style to, admitting she wanted to burn it by the end.
* DuellingMovies: With ''Film/JackTheGiantSlayer'', another action-adventure film based on a classic fairytale. In box office terms, ''Hansel and Gretel'' won by a country mile, although ''Jack'' got a better critical reception. It was also released within the same year as ''Film/OzTheGreatAndPowerful'' and ''Literature/BeautifulCreatures'', two other witch-themed fantasy films.
* FakeNationality:
** English actress Gemma Arterton dons an American accent throughout. Actors' nationalities in the film include Norwegian, Swedish, German, Dutch, British, American and Polish.
** The fairytale itself is German in origin, and no one wants a crowd of people attempting "ze German".
* FollowTheLeader: Several other studios released Hansel & Gretel themed films after this one was greenlit, such as TheMockbuster ''Hansel & Gretel'' by The Asylum, ''Witchslayer Gretl'' by Syfy, and ''Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft'' by Lionsgate.
* MoneyDearBoy: Creator/FamkeJanssen apparently took her role because she desperately needed to pay off her mortgage.
* NoStuntDouble: Jeremy Renner mostly did all his own stunts.
* OnSetInjury: Gemma Arterton sprained her ankle while filming a scene running through the forest.
* PlayingAgainstType: Famke Janssen commented on how unusual it was for her to play such a menacing villain who was "evil to the core".
* StillbornFranchise: A sequel was announced in 2013 and a tv show discussed in 2015. As of 2023, neither has surfaced.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The concept was first envisioned as a short film where, in addition to Hansel having diabetes, Gretel was originally going to have an eating disorder.
** Creator/NoomiRapace was the first choice for Gretel, but dropped out and Creator/DianeKruger and Creator/EvaGreen were in talks to replace her before Gemma Arterton came on board.
** The desert scene was in the original screenplay but had to be cut to fit the shooting schedule. When the film's release was pushed back, because the film had come in under budget, they were able to shoot it and add it back in.
** They test screened two cuts of the movie - one R-rated and another edited down to PG-13. The R-rated cut tested higher and so that was the one released.
