* ActingForTwo:
** Jason Liles does the mo-cap performance of Rodan and Ghidorah's middle head.
** [[spoiler:Creator/ZhangZiyi plays both Dr. Chen and her twin sister Dr. Ling, [[IdenticalGrandson as well as her mother/aunt and grandmother/great aunt in photos]], [[MythologyGag alluding to Mothra's Shobijin heralds]].]]
* ApprovalOfGod: Mike Dougherty personally praised the fanfiction ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/23677753 Song of the Tiny Ones]]'' by Cyndi.
* AscendedMeme: Legendary caught on with the "Kevin" nickname, and [[https://twitter.com/Legendary/status/1171096200122007553 posted an official poll on which Ghidorah head fans love most]]. Kevin gained no less than ''87%'' of the vote by fans whereas the other two Ichi and Ni doesn't even ''compare''. For reference, Ichi only has 6% while Ni only has 7%.
* AwesomeDearBoy:
** Creator/MillieBobbyBrown expresses this in an interview with Total Film Magazine, as she is honored her big screen debut is part of the Godzilla legacy.
** O'Shea Jackson Jr. made it very clear that he is a huge Godzilla fan in every interview he has had for the film, even expressing that Gigan is his favorite villain. He felt extremely excited to join the project and even acknowledged the coincidence of his friends and ''Film/StraightOuttaCompton'' co-stars Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell having worked previously in ''Film/KongSkullIsland''.
* BTeamSequel: Creator/GarethEdwards was originally set to return to the director's chair after taking a break from blockbusters, but he decided to take on ''Film/RogueOne'' in that time instead, meaning that his break was delayed to the point where it encompasses the time he could have directed this.
* ColbertBump: The trailer's usage of "Clair de Lune" astonishingly has fans looking up for the music. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say that no classical music fans actually minds this.
-->'''Website/YouTube comment''': I love how all the comments here are about the beauty of the song, or how it affects their lives trough many ways. And than[sic] [[JustHereForGodzilla a bunch of Godzilla fans showed up screaming about being hyped for movie about four giant monsters fighting]]. And I don't mind at all.
* CoversAlwaysLie: Some fans have questioned the logic of [[https://pics.filmaffinity.com/Godzilla_Rey_de_los_monstruos-188251207-large.jpg this poster]]. Godzilla might be overly tall, but not to the point that his legs can reach the deep ocean floor. Some fans have jokingly made explanations for it, such as the idea that Godzilla [[{{Fartillery}} is being propelled by an atomic fart]]. To be fair, [[UnderwaterFartGag the ripples surrounding the monster might give that impression]].
* CreatorBacklash: Played down slightly, since Creator/CharlesDance didn't seem to hate the movie or regret working on it. However, he ultimately proved somewhat unenthusiastic about it, rather bluntly stating that he nearly fell asleep at the film's premiere. That being said, he brought the same level of dedication to the film as he does all his projects and has also stated he is open to reprising his role in the future.
* CreatorsFavorite:
** While Director Michael Dougherty has stated that he has a major soft spot for Rodan and prays he did "justice" for the character, he also expresses Godzilla as his favorite.
** Creator/KyleChandler says Godzilla is his favorite.
** Both Creator/VeraFarmiga and Creator/MillieBobbyBrown both say they love Mothra.
** Creator/CharlesDance stated in [[https://youtu.be/sT_agPng1V8?t=36 an IGN video]] that his favourite is Mothra when responding to Godzilla-related comments.
--->'''Charles Dance''': "Look at Mothra spread her big wings. Female beauty at its peak." I quite agree.
* DeletedScene:
** A cut scene from the movie showed Admiral Stenz delivering an ItHasBeenAnHonor speech to the Argo's crew before seemingly being killed when his ship is destroyed by Ghidorah's Gravity Beams.
** A deleted end credits scene showed Drs. Ilene and Ling Chen travelling to the Temple of the Moth, where Ilene's twin daughters are singing to a Mothra egg.
* HeyItsThatSound: Some of King Ghidorah's roars are identical to the ''Vastatosaurus rex'' in ''Videogame/PeterJacksonsKingKong''. Listen to the roars in the first twenty seconds of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dJ-yIxLq9M this video]] that montages the roaring sound effects from the ''V. rex'', and you can hear the recycled roar.
* InMemoriam: In Memory of Yoshimitsu Banno (the producer of this film and 2014's ''Film/{{Godzilla|2014}}'' and director of ''Film/GodzillaVsHedorah''), and Creator/HaruoNakajima ([[TheOriginalDarrin the original Godzilla actor]] from [[Film/Godzilla1954 1954]] to [[Film/GodzillaVsGigan 1972]]), both of whom passed away in 2017. The ending credits depicts a photo still of Nakajima wearing the ''[[Film/EbirahHorrorOfTheDeep DaisensoGoji]]'' suit back in 1966, which is accompanied by the classic Godzilla roar..
* MilestoneCelebration: The film was released during the franchise's 65th anniversary. More specifically, it premiered on May 31, 2019 - the 115th Birthday of legendary Godzilla composer Music/AkiraIfukube.
* MissingTrailerScene: The scene from the trailer where Madison tries to contact Monarch is absent from the movie. However, it's present in the novelization [[spoiler:and occurs just before she steals the ORCA]].
* PosthumousCredit: Despite succumbing to a subarachnoid hemorrhage in May 2017, Yoshimitsu Banno is given an executive producer credit for this film.
* ProductionNickname: All three of King Ghidorah's heads had their own names by the production staff based on the first three numbers in Japanese: Ichi (middle head), Ni (right head), and San (left head). The left head however has the distinct honor for having ''another'' name, being "Kevin".
* PromotedFanboy: Mike Dougherty explains in Tokyo Comic Con that he's a ''huge'' Godzilla fan, and that directing this film is a dream come true. To the point that he mentioned photoshopping the original ''Film/Godzilla1954'' spines onto the Legendary Godzilla's back. The Kaiju fights, cinematography and even the modernized Music/AkiraIfukube soundtracks were clearly made for Godzilla fans as he himself is one of them.
* RefittedForSequel: According to ''Film/Godzilla2014'' art book, The Art of Destruction, the Godzilla corpse found in the beginning of that movie would have been discovered frozen somewhere in Siberia instead of the Philippines. It was changed because ''Film/ManOfSteel'', a film from the year prior, had a very similar scene of Clark finding the Kryptonian ship frozen in ice. This film appears to rework it, this time King Ghidorah is found frozen in Antarctica.
* ReleaseDateChange: The film's release date was initially sometime in June 2018, but was pushed back to March 22nd, 2019. It was subsequently pushed back again to May 30, 2019 to avoid competition with Disney's ''Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}''.
* SeparatedAtBirthCasting: Creator/MillieBobbyBrown as the Russell daughter Madison looks like an honest blend of Creator/KyleChandler[='s=] square-shaped facial structure with Creator/VeraFarmiga[='s=] more heart-shaped facial structure, and her high cheekbones and wavy hair match Farmiga's whilst her brunette hair color lines up with Chandler's.
* SpoiledByTheMerchandise: Toy designs revealed that [[spoiler:Godzilla would transform into Burning Godzilla for the final battle against Ghidorah]] well before [[TrailersAlwaysSpoil the trailers and TV spots did]].
** [[spoiler: The Jakks Pacific Ghidorah action figure quite noticeably has a detachable left head, with a joint located higher up on the neck than the middle or right heads. Predictably, Ghidorah ends up losing his left head in the battle against Godzilla in Mexico, though he later grows it back.]]
* TakeThat: After Emma's "Long live the king" line, it immediately cuts to Godzilla demolishing a building that has a large poster of a lion hanging on it. Guess [[WesternAnimation/TheLionKing2019 which film]] WB's rival Disney was releasing the month after ''King of the Monsters'' came out?
* ThoseTwoActors: [[Creator/ZhangZiyi Sayuri]] and the [[Creator/KenWatanabe Chairman]] are [[Literature/MemoirsOfAGeisha reunited]].
* ThrowItIn: Serizawa's final words in his HeroicSacrifice were scripted in English, but Creator/KenWatanabe instead opted to speak the Japanese version of the line, and the filmmakers thought it was much more appropriate when they saw it.
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: The first official trailer completely spoils that [[spoiler:Dr. Emma Russell wants to set the titans free, which is a plot twist in the actual film]].
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: See [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/{{Godzilla}} here]].
* TrailersAlwaysLie: In the final trailer for the film there is a line spoken by Emma Russel claiming that that humanity and the planet will perish “unless we set Godzilla free…” implying some sort of plot-line where Godzilla gets trapped or captured and humanity has to rescue him, in the film itself this line of dialogue is never spoken, Godzilla is actually the only Titan already active and does not get unleashed from hibernation or at any point in the story does he become trapped or contained.
* WordOfGod: Michael Dougherty revealed in an interview that they originally intended for Dr. Ilene Chen and her twin sister Dr. Ling to be explicitly identified as [[spoiler:the [=MonsterVerse=]'s version of the Shobijin, being a pair of humans rather than mystical fairy-women]]. The revelation would have taken place in a credits scene that unfortunately they ran out of time to film, in which the adult twins would enter an ancient temple where [[spoiler:Ilene's two adolescent daughters would be singing to the new Mothra egg that was mentioned in the credits]]. In the film proper, the closest thing to it is Dr. Chen having a throwaway line about [[spoiler:how the women of her bloodline often give birth to twin daughters]] as well as showing a picture of the previous generations of her family [[spoiler:showing how every generation of females were born as twins]].
** Dougherty also confirmed in a tweet that the spots on Mothra's wings are meant to look like Godzilla's eyes in order to highlight their symbiotic relationship by saying that Mothra is Godzilla's "flagbearer" as well as the "Queen of the Monsters".
** In another tweet, Michael Dougherty explained why Ghidorah was frozen in ice: Godzilla and Ghidorah's last showdown in the past ended with Godzilla beating Ghidorah, leading to the three-headed dragon ending up encased in a tomb of ice in the Antarctic.
* WorkingTitle: Unsurprisingly, ''Godzilla 2''. During production, the film was also called ''Fathom''.
