Context Trivia / Caddicarus

Go To

* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: In ''The Illegal World of Crash Bandicoot Bootlegs'', Caddy calls the enemies in [[OverlyLongName 2003 Crash Bandicoot 2 The New Adventure]] "Franchise/MyLittlePony puppies". There actually ''was'' a short lived My Little Pony spin-off named [[http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/My_Little_Puppy My Little Puppy]].
* AttentionDeficitCreatorDisorder: At one point, Caddy was trying to do far too many shows, resulting in an obscene workload, failed projects, and some shows simply being neglected. He ended up cancelling four of his shows, consolidating those four into regular Caddicarus episodes (including Top 10s) and Current Quickies, and introducing film reviews on Fridays, only to then axe Current Quickies as well and introduce a regular simply called ''Caddy'' which essentially carries the same idea as Current Quickies, but without the MotorMouth or the "CYOAR" and with Caddy as himself.
* AuthorsSavingThrow: The initial release of "The Demonic World of Disney [=PS1=] Games" was criticized for having a slur used against the LGBT community. While Caddy mocked the use of it in-character, the fact the slur was included at all got some shade thrown his way. As a result, Caddy removed the video, edited out the slur, and re-released the video with different footage the following day, apologizing for having the slur in the original video.
* AwesomeDearBoy: In his "making-of" video, Caddy mentions that he purchased a 14-foot trampoline for the sake of a single six-second joke. In his "Jesus Games" video, Caddy is DrivenToSuicide by how bad the music in a Spectrum game was, jumping off of his roof to his apparent death. As shown by the trampoline's presence, Caddy really did jump off the roof, using the trampoline to catch himself safely.
* TheCastShowoff: He can play several instruments, including:
** Guitar: He plays acoustic guitar as early as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k93NLm3vkck one of the "Randasongs"]] on the Caddy Plays channel.
** Bass guitar: When demonstrating a catchy bass riff in a Net Yaroze game.
** Drums: in the ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' video, in a VoiceClipSong in the ''VideoGame/SlyCooper'' retrospective, and several drum covers. His "making-of" video also shows that he's got a full electronic drum set, and was planning on making drum covers and drum videos, but it wasn't panning out at the time.
* {{Corpsing}}: During the scene in "The Legendary World of Spyro Games" where some of Caddy's friends yells at him for the idea of the video, Ashley [=McDonald=] ends up not being able to keep a straight face, and at first smiles while shouting before breaking into laughter.
* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer:
** In his review of the ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDooAndTheCyberChase'' video game, Caddy gets confused over how each level's goal is a box of Scooby Snacks when you collect far more Scooby Snacks in the levels themselves than there would be in just a box. While this isn't stated in-game, [[WesternAnimation/ScoobyDooAndTheCyberChase the movie the game was adapted from]] establishes that collecting a box of Scooby Snacks is how you progress from level to level in the in-universe game that the gang gets stuck in.
** At one point during his ''VideoGame/{{LEGOLAND}}'' review, he refers to a spider as an insect.
** In his ''[[VideoGame/FamilijnyCDRomek Peter]] [[Creator/PhoenixGames Pan]]'' review, he miscredits Creator/DingoPictures as the creator of both ''Peter Pan'' and ''Snow White and the Seven Clever Boys'', despite the fact that Phoenix Games only ported Dingo's library to the [=PS2=] and Dingo themselves fizzled out around the turn of the century. In actuality, Aqua Pacific was the developer of ''Seven Clever Boys'' and ''Peter Pan''. He corrects this in his review of ''Animal Soccer World'', noting the differences in animation style between the two creators... except in ''that'' review, he states that Phoenix Games "outsourced" these films to Dingo Pictures, when in reality these films were actually made close to ''a decade'' before Phoenix acquired and released them on the [=PS1 and PS2=].
** In his review of the video game adaptation of ''[[{{WesternAnimation/GeorgeOfTheJungle2007}} George of the Jungle]]'' on the Platform/PlayStation2, he mistakes Dr. Scott for a chef. Considering that the show is somewhat obscure, this wouldn't be too bad... except Caddy maintains this assumption even after he looks up [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_of_the_Jungle_(2007_TV_series) the series’ Wikipedia page]] that ''describes the show's main characters'' (along with the fact that said character is making a cure for the common cold in the game, which should have given him a bit of a hint).
** In his video on ''[[VideoGame/CrashTwinsanity Crash Twinsanity]]'' he gets upset over the game invoking the EvilTwin trope with Evil Crash, despite the fact that Evil Crash is ''not'' Crash's brother but instead an EvilCounterpart from the 10th Dimension. Apart from this being visible in the context of that point in the game's plot, the fact that Caddy even looked into the cut content of ''Twinsanity'' makes this more baffling as the morality-swapped versions of the main cast are some of the more well-known pieces of cut content from the game.
** Caddy's video on ''The Classic Nursery Rhymes Collection'' has him say that the ampersand isn't a letter, not realizing that it used to be considered one. This wouldn't normally be an ''obvious'' error, but considering that the intention behind ''The Classic Nursery Rhymes Collection'' was to preserve a lot of the historical elements of the nursery rhymes, it becomes a bit more noticeable.
** In "Peppa Pig HAS A MUSIC CAREER", Caddy briefly fell for [[https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Peppa_Pig&diff=prev&oldid=915803358 a long-running Wikipedia hoax]] which claimed that ''WesternAnimation/PeppaPig'' had [[FourTwentyBlazeIt 420]] episodes, as opposed to only 289 at the time the video was released. It took seven months for this hoax to be noticed.
** In "I Spent $115 on the WORST [=PS4=] Games Ever", while he correctly identifies Oddcast's [[SyntheticVoiceActor Text-to-Speech Daniel]] as one of the "voice actors" of ''The Unknown City - Episode 1'', he either couldn't tell or didn't know that another game, ''Spear of Destiny: The Kaiseki'', also makes use of Ivona's Brian, another Text-to-Speech voice (albeit filtered).
** A minor one shows up in ''I Watched 24 of the WORST [=YouTube=] Videos EVER''. While watching a parody Monster Energy advert he made, Caddy mistakenly refers to the Awesome Face meme as an [[UsefulNotes/{{Emojis}} emoji]] - it's actually an image macro that originated as an emoticon long before emojis gained popularity outside of Japan.
** One in the ''VideoGame/PlayStationAllStarsBattleRoyale'' review, when he claims that the game "forces you through the tutorial". This (paraphrased) transcript of the leadup to the claim explains everything wrong with that statement:
--->'''Game''': Would you like to play the tutorial?\
'''Caddy''': No.\
'''Game''': Are you sure?\
'''Caddy''': No.
** A minor error occurs in ''The Demonic World of Disney [=PS1=] Games'' as Caddy talks about ''VideoGame/OneHundredAndTwoDalmatiansPuppiesToTheRescue''. He mistakenly refers to the father dog as Pongo, seemingly unaware that his name is actually Dipstick, as he's one of Pongo's original puppies.
** In ''The Awful World of Skateboarding Games'', Caddy calls ''Thrasher: Skate And Destroy'' a "Tony Hawk ripoff". It was actually developed around the same time as the first ''VideoGame/TonyHawksProSkater'', and released less than two months after it.
** During the ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys'' segment of ''The Scary World of Viral [=YouTube=] Horror Games, when playing the third game, he claims that the systems going down is based on luck, stating "they go down whenever they feel like it". However, there is a pattern to the system errors, with them going down through overuse or when attacked by phantom animatronics.
* CreatorBacklash:
** When he first reviewed ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'' he was a bit softer on the game, giving RE 6 a 7/10 (or 3.5/5 on a five point scale) and saying he thought the game was better than RE 5. Later in his "Top 10 Games That I Like... But No-One Else Does!" video he states that the original video is "hideously outdated" and that now he would give the game 2.5 or 3 stars out of 5 (or a 5/10 or 6/10).
** His other channel, [[https://www.youtube.com/CaddysConundrumsShow Caddy Plays]], has him uploading old videos from before he became well-known (most of them non-video game related). He considers them horrid, but the fans seem to like them a lot.
** His first Caddicarus video on ''Rascal Racers''. In his video looking back at it, he criticizes how badly made the video is with the camera quality, poor audio work, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking the usage of Comic Sans]]. He did later on clarify the video ''while dated'' shows how far he went however and approves it.
** In February 2016, Caddy announced he would be doing a major cutback on the amount of shows on his channel due to feeling way too overwhelmed with the amount of different shows, and feeling he strayed too far from his channel's roots (in particular lamenting it had been months since last covering a [=PS1=] title). Retrospectives, Tinker Time, Drive-Thru Reviews, and Puppicarus were all axed, with Caddy now only focusing on doing regular Caddicarus episodes on Sundays and film reviews on Fridays and leaving it at that. The Spyro retrospective is still on the cards but as one huge video instead of three. It happened again in 2017, retiring Current Quickies and replacing it with a much longer version entitled Caddy.
** ''I Watched 24 of the WORST Youtube Videos Ever''. Spoiler alert: [[SelfDeprecation they're all his]]. Awful comedy skits he made as a teenager. He's kind of proud of some parts of the production, but overall it's mostly just exposing his really awkward film-making beginnings for the world to see.
** Caddy's made it no secret how much he absolutely despises his 2012-2013 videos, due to how amateurish they are. In fact, starting in 2018 it became common for him to review the games from that era in order to give them justice in his now staple humor and style.
** As of July 2021, Caddy has admitted to no longer liking ''any'' of his videos he made prior to December 2019 (which was when he "killed" his channel and rebranded its formatting to be longer videos), as he finds all videos prior to his channel's death to be amateurish and [[UnintentionalPeriodPiece products of their time]]. In October 2021, he even put "[OLD]" in front of all his pre-2020 videos and changed their titles[[note]]For example, "The Lion King: Simba's Shitey Adventure" was renamed to "[OLD] The Lion King [=PS1=]"[[/note]] to drive his disownment of them further home - the sole exceptions being his drum covers.
** [[https://twitter.com/Caddicarus/status/1435687967885074441 He decried his]] ''WesternAnimation/PeppaPig'' videos stating that he tried too hard to be a CausticCritic and acting like his opinion means anything as a whole towards a kids show that, at the end of the day, people simply don't care much for.
* DyeingForYourArt:
** He shaved his head for a section of Part 3 of his ''VideoGame/MaxPayne'' retrospective.
** He likes the ''Oddworld'' series so much that he got symbols from the series permanently tattooed on the backs of his hands.
** Happens in ''The Depressing World of Bad Crash Bandicoot Games'', where he shaves his beard for the first time in years for the sake of a three-second gag.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Caddy's Announcement video (the one where he sang thank you over and over again to the tune of Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt") has quietly disappeared for no reason given.
* MilestoneCelebration:
** The ''Bubsy 3D'' review, which celebrated 50 videos made thus far.
** Caddy has a number of subscriber specials on his channel:
*** ''The Worst Thing Ever'' video (which reviewed ''The Mystery of the Missing Hotpot Recipe'') celebrated his 50k subscribers mark.
*** ''The Fifth Element'' review celebrated his 100k subscribers mark.
*** ''Bratz: The Splatty Ratz That Are Gnatz Covered In Shatz'' celebrated his 200k subscriber mark.
*** ''66 Net Yaroze Games'' was made to celebrate his 500k subscriber mark. Unfortunately, [=YouTube=] decided a few days later to to remove unused and abandoned channels, causing a chunk of his subscribers to be removed from his feed, meaning he would have to make another one when he hit 500k ''again''.
*** Caddy intended to review a ''Franchise/SpyroTheDragon'' game for his 1 million subscriber special, but partially due to the aforementioned Website/YouTube purge, he ended up reviewing ''VideoGame/SpyroEnterTheDragonfly'' just after doing the Net Yaroze video. His "making-of" video ended up occurring just after he hit 1 million subscribers, which he noted in the video that at the time that video went live, he "may or may not" have hit a million. Caddy ended up later clarifying on Twitter that a video on ''Spyro'' would indeed be the celebration as promised, but it just so happened to take place before he had the ''Spyro'' video made. It would finally come to pass in December 2022 with ''The Legendary World of Spyro Games'', his longest video to date, in which he reviews every ''Spyro'' game, along with officially acknowledging the milestone at the beginning of the video.
* OneEpisodeWonder: Today's Special, meant to be an in-depth review feature of a current game. He later stated that being so critical the first time through ruined his enjoyment of the game, and the time-pressured experience resulted in a rating he later disagreed with, so he abandoned the idea. It was later revived in 2017 under a new name, simply titled Caddy.
* RealitySubtext: His videos from April to August 2020 all start with a subplot where he is forced to stay inside because the world has turned into bricks, as a parallel to the UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic which forced lockdown restrictions.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers:
** Caddy's review of the [=PS1=] version of ''Santa Claus Saves the Earth'' got content ID'd by Universal Music Group because of the use of a song from ''Film/TheMuppetChristmasCarol'' at the end, making it so that the video can no longer be viewed in some countries, which is why Caddy did a quick re-review of the game (via its Gameboy Advance port) in 2015.
** Avoiding this is the reason he resolved to describing the songs he reviews in ''Peppa Pig HAS A MUSIC CAREER'', only sharing a very few seconds of said songs.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: In ''[=PS1=] Games for Babies'', he intended to review ''Disney Learning with Winnie the Pooh'' and ''Blue's Clues: Blue's Big Musical'', but because of their high selling price tags (£250 and £350, respectively), he instead rants about how expensive these games aimed at toddlers are.
* ThrowItIn:
** In ''Thomas the Tank Engine'', Caddicarus slammed the front door which caused the letterbox to fall off. This wasn't intended, but they put it in the video anyway because they thought it was funny.
---> "Look what you've done to our front door!"
** In his review for ''Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair'', Microsoft Word "[[ArtificialStupidity corrected]]" the word '[[Franchise/DonkeyKong Kong]]' by spelling it as 'Long', which Caddicarus only noticed when recording. He kept it, instead of rectifying the mistaken correction and doing another take, after it got some laughs out of him.
** Discussed in "The Exhausting World of Making a Caddicarus Video". Caddy notes that he sometimes gets asked by fans how much of a video is improvised, and how much is scripted. As Caddy himself noted throughout the video, his scripting is quite extensive, and "maybe ten percent" of any video is improvised. And that's only if Caddy can think of something funnier in the spur of the moment or if a particular gag wasn't going to work for whatever reason.
** In a review of every ''Franchise/SpyroTheDragon'' game, Caddy was supposed to say "A Surprise Bouns Round!" but almost said "A Surprise ''Mexican'' Bouns Round" instead. After some {{Corpsing}}, it cuts to the Mexican Bouns Round anyways, with Caddy flying over a Día de los Muertos celebration.
* TroubledProduction: Caddy didn't release a new video in early 2021 because he upgraded his home studio and built a new working PC, the latter of which led to an insane plethora of problems. His new equipment was faulty, to the point that he spent weeks trying to fix all his issues. And if that wasn't enough, the other computers in his home started to fail as well, meaning he couldn't progress on his work nor livestream; the few working [=PCs=] had to go to his girlfriend, since her kids were using computers for school. And to top it all of, he accidentally deleted over 18 hours of gameplay footage while formatting his new computer, forcing him to make another video entirely. In the end, he spent nearly ten thousand American dollars on new spec in desperate attempts to fix everything, and it still didn't work. He explained in length everything he went through [[https://youtu.be/dHVXp_fRGzE in an animated video]].
* UnfinishedEpisode: He was midway through the writing of his first review of 2021, which was [[TroubledProduction already plagued with a buttload of technical issues]], when he lost all gameplay footage of it because Caddy forgot to create a backup of the footage before reformatting his hard drive. He couldn't recover the footage, forcing him to scrap the video entirely.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** As seen from the ''Rascal Racers'' review, Jim originally was signing up for Normal Boots, but due to Normal Boots later "shutting down", he simply went on with his show. He did eventually join Hidden Block.
** As explained in TroubledProduction and UnfinishedEpisode above, he lost all gameplay footage for what was intended to be his first 2021 review video, he couldn't bring himself to play and record the games he would have covered again, and decided to cover different games instead.
