* BonusMaterial: ''Athena: Full Throttle'' has a section of bonus art that can be unlocked.
* FollowTheLeader: ''Athena'' was SNK's attempt to get into side-scrolling successes like ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''
* FountainOfExpies: Along with [[Manga/UruseiYatsura Lum]], Athena codified the "cute magical girl wearing just a bikini" archetype popular in Japan during the '80s.
* MilestoneCelebration: The sequel, ''Athena: Full Throttle'', was made to celebrate the original game's 20th anniversary.
* RevivalByCommercialization: ''SNK Arcade Classics 0'', a pre-Platform/NeoGeo games compilation released for Platform/PlayStationPortable, was the first time the arcade version of ''Athena'' was re-released outside of Japan, which piqued some interest in Athena's arcade origin after her appearances in SNK {{Crossover}} {{Fighting Game}}s.
* SequelGap: Thanks to her newfound popularity from ''SVC: Chaos'' and ''NGBC'', SNK Playmore decided to make a sequel to the first game... 20 years later! The game, named ''Athena: Full Throttle'', was released to i-mode Mobile in 2006, and has similar gameplay and artwork to the original.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Some ads for the Famicom port stated that the game would be released for the Disk System add-on, but it ended coming out on a regular Famicom cartridge. The conversion seems to have been done somewhat hastily, as the cartridge version still has load times.
