* AccidentalDownerEnding: Season Two ended on a tense cliffhanger; [[spoiler:Rosalee had been captured by Cato and was forced to leave her newborn child and brother behind for her husband Noah to find. Cato had also captured the people in the sewing circle boarding house, including head of the circle and passing escapee Georgia.]] The last scene and hook consisted of Elizabeth being involved in the Raid on Harper's Ferry (John Brown's failed attempt at a slave revolt). However, the series was cancelled soon after that season[[note]]with suspicions that it was in part because the conservative-leaning Sinclair Broadcast Group was attempting to buy Tribune Media, the owner of WGN, and wanted no part in continuing the series[[/note]] and multiple attempts to find a new broadcast channel failed, meaning the series ends on a downer note with no closure for any of the intertwining plotlines.
* DescendedCreator: In Season 2, Executive Producer John Legend appeared as Fredrick Douglass. He also contributed to the modern era soundtrack.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: Cancelled after only two seasons in the shadow of the notoriously right-wing Sinclair Broadcasting announcing its deal to buy Tribune Media, owners of the network. It was the last of the original WGN America drama series to be cancelled and while the cancellation was made by Tribune's current management, it sparked rumors about what Sinclair would do with the network after the deal's completion. Sinclair later stated that WGN America's carriage contracts with cable companies would make turning it into a Fox News clone unfeasible, and Tribune cancelled the sale in 2018.
* RealLifeRelative:
** Jurnee Smollett-Bell's brother, Jussie Smollett, guest starred as a vengeful runaway in season 1.
** Clara is played by Alano Miller's wife, [=DeWanda=] Wise.
