In spite of being the first game in the ''Final Fantasy'' series, and therefore being more minimalist on plot and character depth than its successors, Square's would-be swan song can make you put down the controller for a few seconds.

* Five Lufenian warriors were sent to investigate the belief that there is another higher force, TheManBehindTheMan controlling Tiamat. However, none of them returned. Turns out those warriors were cursed by the Fiends and turned into [[ForcedTransformation bats]]. That's gotta suck.
* The fact that defeating the final boss forces you to hit the ResetButton, and turns the Warrior of Light's tale into TheGreatestStoryNeverTold. The game points out that the only one who remembers all of it is [[ThePlayerIsTheMostImportantResource the one on the other side of the fourth wall]].
* One floor of Whisperwind Cove is scored with the melancholy church theme and filled with the spirits of monsters you've killed over the course of the game. You have to speak to each one so they can pass on to the next life, and aside from a few sore losers like Astos and the Vampire, most of them don't seem like such bad chaps now that they have nothing left to fight for.
* Waterfall Cave, Mirage Tower, and the Floating Fortress have a number of Lufenian robots in various states of disrepair, and most of them are mourning the deaths of their fellow robots or their Lufenian masters. The one in Waterfall Cave even breaks down after you speak to it, as though it used the last of its power to tell you the last important thing it could remember.
