* Music/DannyElfman's score alone is tear-jerking.
* The moment where Kim realizes the situation looks so bad that the mob of suburbanites will be too angry to reason with, and half-whispers "Run" to Edward. Heartbreaking.
* "Hold me." "... I can't."
* The ending, despite being made to look bittersweet, is really depressing when you analyze it more. Edward basically retreats back to his castle and spends the rest of his life all alone again as a result of being betrayed by nearly the entire neighborhood due to a series of misunderstandings and being slandered by Jim and Joyce, and not even Kim, the girl he loves, comes back to visit him, ever, because she wants him to "remember her as he first met her". The final lines of dialogue and Creator/DannyElfman's powerful music only makes the ending even more heart-wrenching.
** Granted, the movie does try to make the ending seem somewhat less depressing by showing that, despite being all alone again, Edward is happy and at peace, but even then, it's still an ending too bleak for many.
* The scenes with Creator/VincentPrice. This was one of his last performances, and though he was pretty ill and frail when filming, he gave it his all. For a guy who did mostly science fiction and horror BMovie b-movies, he was dead serious about putting everything he had into his characters, and this movie is a very dignified final appearance for him.
** The RealitySubtext goes further. Price was Creator/TimBurton's idol as he was growing up, so the fact that Price not only appeared in his film but did a wonderfully heartbreaking job while nearing the end of his life makes it all the more lovely.
** "He didn't wake up."
** The scene where Edward accidentally cuts his hands apart as the Inventor crumples to the floor.
** "I know it's a little early for Christmas, Edward, but... I have a present for you."
** That... last little smile the Inventor gives as Edward looks at his present can hit anybody hard, especially remembering this was Price's final performance. The smile even looks like the ones Price would give in his heyday.
** It's especially sad that the inventor died because he was such a CoolOldGuy and gave off a Mr. Rogers feel.
* Edward's horror at when he slashes Kim's hand accidentally when Jim surprises him, with Edward running away.
** And later, when he saves Kevin from Jim's drunk driving, but he cuts his face several times with his scissors while trying to help him, which leads the town to believe Edward attacked him.
* At the very end, Kim kissing Edward and telling him she loves him before they separate forever. The ReactionShot of Edward's eyes upon her confession is what really seals it.
* The saddest thing of all is that Peg was the one who took Edward from the castle, showed him the outside world, and treated him like a son. The last she hears of him is her daughter telling everyone he died. She must have felt horrible.
* The rest of the neighborhood turning against Edward after he's arrested for breaking into Jim's house. While it's absolutely understandable from their limited perspective ("It could have been any of our houses..."), the DramaticIrony is extremely painful.
** When Kim successfully tricks the mob into believing Edward was killed along with Jim in the confrontation in the mansion by showing them a hand's worth of shears (that were really just lying on a shelf in the foyer) as "proof", their reaction isn't relief but alarm and no small amount of guilt as they turn around and head for their homes. Joyce -- who did more than anyone aside from Esmeralda and Jim to encourage the others to believe Edward was wicked, solely because he rejected her attempt to seduce him -- is the last to leave, with a hint of MyGodWhatHaveIDone in her expression as she does so.
* Edward's bout of intense jealousy after he confesses to Kim that he went along with Jim's plan because it was Kim who asked him (Edward) to do so. He slashes a curtain, then heads into the bathroom, where he continuously slashes the wall with his hands as he stares into the mirror.
