-> '''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2'' [[note]] His canon debut is attributed to the 16-bit Sonic The Hedgehog 2, but his first chronological appearance was in the 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2, [[OlderThanTheyThink which predated the release of the Genesis Sonic 2 by a month]][[/note]]
-> '''Voiced by''': Kazuki Hayashi (Japanese, 1998), Atsuki Murata (Japanese, 2000-2002), Creator/RyoHirohashi (Japanese, 2003-present), Creator/TakutoYoshinaga (Japanese, Classic Tails), Corey Bringas (English, 1999-2001), Connor Bringas (English, 2001-2002), William Corkery (English, 2003-2004), Amy Palant (English, 2005-2010), Creator/KateHiggins (English, 2010-2013), Creator/ColleenOShaughnessey (English, 2014-present)

Sonic's young sidekick: a small fox who can use his unique twin tails to fly. Despite his young age, he's a reliable and dependable ally to Sonic. In later games, he's come into his own as a genius inventor that even rivals Eggman. His real name is ''Miles Prower'', and he grew up as an orphan, [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer ostracized because of his twin tails.]] One day, he noticed Sonic's running by and was so awed by his speed, he tried to catch up using his tails. Sonic didn't pay the young fox any attention, but witnessing how he nearly caught up with him impressed him enough to take him under his wing and give him his well known nickname. Together, they foiled Eggman's latest scheme on Westside Island and the two became nearly inseparable.

Ever since their first meeting, Tails has tried his hardest to be the best person he can for Sonic's sake, often times by mimicking him. Humble, docile, and good-natured with mechanical prowess that can potentially rival Eggman's, but he never thought it was much of a big deal.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: He got 3 spinoff games to himself; ''VideoGame/TailsAdventure'', ''VideoGame/TailsSkypatrol'' and ''VideoGame/TailsAndTheMusicMaker''.
* AcePilot: The Tornado originally belonged to Sonic but Tails's pilot competency has made him the ''de facto'' owner of the plane as he flies and maintains it more than Sonic ever did.
* {{Adorkable}}: He's a young nerd whose favorite food is mint candy and is afraid of ghosts, naturally this makes him this.
* AerithAndBob: His real name is Miles Prower, while the other Sonic characters have unique names.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: He used to get picked on for having two tails, though IntelligenceEqualsIsolation may have been part of it as well.
* AnimeHair: More so in his post-''Adventure'' design then his original one.
* ArtEvolution: He got a slimmer design touchup from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' and on, and got his color altered from orange to yellow.
* AsianFoxSpirit: He doesn't have the magic powers associated with Kitsune, but he has the intelligence and multiple tails.
* AttackAnimal: In his SuperMode, he summons four "Super Flickies" that charge at and destroy all enemies and even bosses.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: He's sensible enough but can sometimes get so caught up with his gadgets that he loses focus quickly, this nearly gets him killed in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld''.
* BackStory: Tails is apparently an orphan, and before meeting Sonic, used to be bullied by his home island's inhabitants.
* BadassAdorable: Prevented Eggman from detonating his missile in ''Sonic Adventure'' and saved Station Square all by himself, but at his core, he's still just a quiet, geeky kid.
* BadassBookworm: He fits this, but it's been mellowed down due to his lack of importance as a fighter in a majority of newer games. [[spoiler: Until ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'' when he outsmarts the [[BigBadEnsemble Deadly Six]] by faking his brainwashing and even shuts down and reverses Eggman's life draining machine when it was thought that only the latter could do it.]]
* BadassInDistress: [[spoiler: In ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'' Tails is captured by the Deadly Six and left to be turned into a robot, however he manages to hack the machine that would have done so to retain his free will, thus rescuing himself from the Deadly Six's fox-napping.]]
* BerserkButton: Insulting his technological skills, ignoring him, and threatening Sonic's life. Also in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'', he didn't take it well when Sonic trusts Eggman to shut down his Extractor more than him.
* BestFriend: To Sonic since ''Sonic 2''. No matter the game, Tails is almost always on hand to lend Sonic his support: whether it's giving him a lift in The Tornado, or whipping up gadgets to help him out.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: This is best shown in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' when he vowed to Eggman that [[ThisIsUnforgivable he will never forgive him for ''nearly'' threatening Sonic's life via space capsule]] and didn't hesitate to blow his brains out during their mech fight.
* BigBrotherWorship: Towards Sonic in the beginning. [[CharacterDevelopment Over time, he's become less amazed by Sonic's feats and even recognises his flaws]].
* BlowYouAway: [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin He uses the Tornado to create a huge tornado]] in ''Sega All-Stars Racing''. He's also able to use his tails to create strong winds if he spins them without hovering.
* BunglingInventor: While usually competent, there are times his inventions don't quite work as intended.
* CaptainCrash: Eggman has an impeccable talent for gunning down his planes. The only time he crashed on purpose was in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' when he was forced to crash the Tornado 2's transformed state onto the Egg Carrier because [[DidntThinkThisThrough he forgot landing gear on the form.]]
* CaptainObvious: Sonic {{lampshade|Hanging}}d this in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' with an AsideGlance.
* CartoonyTail: Two of them.
* CelibateHero: Like Sonic, Tails doesn't really show a lot of interest in romance.
* CharacterDevelopment: Gets a lot of it in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''. His defining moment is when Eggman attacks Station Square and with Sonic separated from him, Tails has to defeat Eggman himself, compared to all the times in which Tails needed to be by Sonic's side in order to get things done. This is even retained for most games afterwards, where Tails is less impressed with Sonic's feats than before, though he still remains his sidekick out of their close friendship.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He was actually a lot nicer and more humble than his current personality would suggest, but that may be the result of the aforementioned CharacterDevelopment. Also, his role as the team's GadgeteerGenius was played up more in the ''Adventure'' era to the point it became his main character trait, whereas this aspect was virtually non-existent in the original platformers.
* CheerfulChild: Extremely positive and upbeat.
* ChildProdigy: Just being able to fly the Tornado in [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2 Sky Chase Zone]] would've gotten him here, but he's been able to BUILD -- as in, with his own two hands -- [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure more than]] [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 one upgrade for]] [[VideoGame/SonicAndSegaAllStarsRacing the plane]], a portable device that can [[VideoGame/SonicUnleashed bring up satellite signals]] and [[VideoGame/SonicColors translate the Wisps' language]], a [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 fake Chaos Emerald]], [[VideoGame/SonicRiders his team's Extreme Gear]], and everything from his Game Gear spin-off games. Oh, and depending on whatever continuity you believe in, he singlehandedly learned to turn his twin namesakes into the most useful and deadly {{Cartoony Tail}}s ever! All this at 8 years old.
* ClassicalAntihero: He shares Sonic's undying altruism but not his outlook on life. Sonic is adventurous and quick to act (if not a bit brash and full of himself) while Tails is less self-assured. He overcomes this frequently but always seems to have a nagging "should I let Sonic handle this" doubt about his actions before he commits.
* CoolCar: Tails is associated with the Caterham 7[=/=]Lotus Super Seven sports car and was first seen driving a lookalike of it on a 1992 manga. It later appeared on an EasterEgg in ''Sonic CD'' and most obviously on the ''Sonic Drift'' games, but this trait ended up falling into obscurity over the years.
* CoolPlane: The Tornado and all of its upgrades. The original red variation is actually Sonic's, but Tails is so much of a better pilot that he's all but relinquished ownership to him.
* CoolShades: Wore those in one of his first manga appearances, which is in fact what that one ''Sonic CD'' easter egg was referencing.
* CunningLikeAFox: {{Subverted|Trope}}. While he is certainly intelligent enough, his childish naivete prevents him from actually being cunning most of the time.
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Seems to have become this in ''VideoGame/SonicColors''. Sonic must be rubbing off on him.
** Exaggerated in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld''. Probably half of his lines are snarking at Sonic and/or Eggman.
* DependingOnTheWriter: The consistent things about him are that he's always Sonic's best friend and sidekick as well as being TheSmartGuy. Now whether he's a young protege who looks up to Sonic or an equal partner on their adventures varies. Also, his maturity tends to fluctuate as well; sometimes he acts like the kid he's said to be, other times he has more sense than his peers.
* DespairEventHorizon: Hits it early on in ''VideoGame/SonicForces'' after [[spoiler:Infinite seemingly kills Sonic. After the six-month TimeSkip, the rest of the Resistance largely considers Tails a lost cause, and we later see Tails failing at repairing Omega while being rather nonchalant despite everything going on. It takes the appearance of Classic Sonic, as well as the discovery that the Modern Sonic is still alive, for Tails to snap out of it.]]
* {{Deuteragonist}}: A rare case in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld''. While Sonic stops the villains, he doesn't actually help save the world - Tails does that part all on his own.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Building a powerful biplane with a transformed state: good idea. Building a powerful biplane with a transformed state ''without the landing gear'': bad idea.
* DistressedDude: In the 8-bit version of ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2''. [[spoiler:Can actually lead to a pretty depressing ending if you don't collect all the Emeralds, as it's implied that Eggman ''killed'' Tails.]]
* TheEngineer: His technological abilities have been increasingly helpful to Sonic over the years. Nowadays, it overshadows his original combat role.
* ExpositionFairy: He's this in ''VideoGame/SonicColors''.
* FatalFlaw: While not quite as developed as those of his team mates, Tails is sometimes shown to get a bit too fixated with his machinery and know-how, leading to [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny distraction issues]] or [[BunglingInventor not quite thinking them through]]. Being a child, he can also sometimes get insecure or stroppy, leading to issues cooperating.
* FearOfThunder: He's scared of thunder [[IronicFear despite]] it being his [[ShockAndAwe most commonly used element]].
%%* FlashStep: In VideoGame/SonicColors.
* {{Flight}}: He can use his namesake tails to propel him upward, and when that isn't enough, there's always the Tails Tornado: later the X-Tornado.
* {{Foil}}: While Dr. Eggman's main rivalry is with Sonic, Tails fits the role moreso due to his intellect and handiness with technology.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic and sanguine.
* GadgeteerGenius: In most ''Sonic'' media, Tails is the "gadget" guy, making him opposite to Eggman.
* GirlsHaveCooties: To a mild extent in some medias. It actually helps resolve the plot almost every time it comes up.
* GogglesDoNothing: Wears [[http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100930204758/sonic/images/4/42/Tails_81.png some]] in the ''VideoGame/SonicRiders'' series.
* GoodCounterpart: He has evolved into a good counterpart to Eggman (because Eggman was introduced first), seeing as Tails' GadgeteerGenius abilities have become as prominent as Eggman's, and Tails is [[WiseBeyondTheirYears young, yet very mature]] ([[InnocentProdigy in some ways]]) while Eggman is [[ManChild older, yet rather immature]]. This is more apparent in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', where Tails and Eggman are both "shooting" characters and control the same way. It's also worth noting that both are among the few characters in the Sonic franchise that have full names, yet are OnlyKnownByTheirNickname. It's sometimes implied that Eggman and Tails respect each other's genius in spite of all the trouble they cause each other, to the point where they sometimes devolve into a FriendlyRivalry.
* HappilyAdopted: Some continuities give him the backstory of being adopted and raised by Sonic himself.
* HeartwarmingOrphan: He has no known parents, but is often described as an orphan in certain alternate media.
* HeliCritter: TropeCodifier.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He'll believe someone if they say they aren't evil, no matter what prior experiences he's had with them.
* HumbleHero: He's done his fair share of heroics but is far too modest to really take credit, in sharp contrast to [[SmugSuper Sonic]].
* HyperCompetentSidekick: In the game continuity only. Tails has an absurd number of useful skills, and can do nearly anything Sonic can do and more.
* HyperspaceArsenal: He doesn't use it often, but he has a ton of stuff that can appear out of nowhere, especially in ''VideoGame/TailsAdventure''.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Tails wishes he could be as much of a hero as his best friend, [[TheHero Sonic]]. Some CharacterDevelopment throughout the ''Adventure'' titles shows that he's starting to step out of Sonic's shadow to become a hero on his own right, but he still has a lot to catch up with the others. His {{Leitmotif}}, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfjKXqDDhxs "Believe in Myself"]] is also an accurate example of this trope.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DizopdPMBw Believe in Myself"]]
* InformedAttribute: Many modern bios refer to him as a "hyperactive fox boy", despite his {{Keet}}-like attitude fading considerably over the years in favor of him becoming a rather mellow and serious minded character.
* InnocentBlueEyes: They do really bring out his childlike innocence.
* InnocentProdigy: [[DependingOnTheWriter It varies from game-to-game]], but Tails is just a kid who happens to be extremely intelligent for his age. He sometimes joins in on Sonic's taunting, but also wises up faster than his big bro as well.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Most of his friends, all of his close friends, are quite a bit older than him.
* IronicFear: According to ''VideoGame/SonicJam'' he's [[http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100426150319/sonic/images/a/aa/Sonic_Jam.png scared of thunder]] but ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' features using moves such as Thunder Shoot.
* JackOfAllStats: Outside of platformers, this is Tails' usual role. For example, in VideoGame/SonicBattle, he has slightly above average speed and defense; with average attack power. In general, he tends to be faster but weaker than Knuckles; and slightly slower but stronger than Sonic.
* KidAppealCharacter: The very first one of the series, he's often recommended for beginners due to his flying abilities in the 2D games.
* KidSidekick: He's almost twice as young as him to boot.
* TheKirk: Overlapping with TheSpock at times. Tails is generally the most level-headed of the three.
* LittleProfessorDialog: He can speak some big words for his age and is generally the one to piece together and explain things. (Also when doubled over as the ExpositionFairy)
* LovableNerd: Very nerdy, but also very adorable.
* MadeOfIron: Even without counting his invincibility in the two-player mode of the older games. Tails has been shot with lasers and crashed planes multiple times, but the worst he's ever been hurt is being dazed for a few minutes.
%%* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The Feminine Boy to Amy's Masculine Girl.
* MeaningfulName: Miles Prower fits in with Sonic's name, referring to velocity. (miles per hour)
* MotorMouth: Not as much as Marine or Omochao, but often with TechnoBabble.
* MrFixit: He's a mechanic and maintains planes pretty well. ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'' also showed him fixing Cubot's malfunctioned voice chip and [[spoiler: reversing the effects of Eggman's machine.]]
* MrViceGuy: Tails is usually incredibly lucid and intelligent, but sometimes his childishness seeps through, making him naive or huffy. He's also sometimes a bit over fixated with machinery, at the cost of his attention span.
* MultipleTailedBeast: Being based on the [[AsianFoxSpirit Kitsune]], it is to be expected.
* NiceGuy: One of the nicest and most mild-mannered of the cast.
* NonActionGuy: He's made this in ''Unleashed'', ''Colors'', ''Generations'', and ''Forces''. [[spoiler:Subverted in the 3DS release of Generations. He and his younger self attack Eggman head-on in the end, allowing the Sonics to go Super and finish it up.]]
* NoodleIncident: One has to wonder how Tails was able to make a TV out of paperclips, and reprogram a computer with detergent & a toothpick, as was mentioned in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld''.
* NuclearMutant: At least in a few alternate continuities, it's been theorized that his mutation is due to toxic waste dumped by Dr. Robotnik.
* NumberTwo: Often cited as Sonic's right-hand man and the most likely to tag along in his adventures. He even sometimes takes over in Sonic's absence.
* OneManArmy: In ''VideoGame/TailsAdventure'', taking on a whole armada on his own.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: To the point where most people didn't think he had a real name.
* OnlySaneMan: In ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'', at least.
* OutOfFocus: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. He's nowhere near as prominent as he once was and he's rarely a playable character nowadays, but he continuously makes appearances in the plot and is just as much a part of the action as Sonic. Subverted in Episode II of ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog4'', where he's playable alongside Sonic once again (although only in co-op in the case of ''Sonic 4'').
* PingPongNaivete: Has astonishing technical abilities, but often has the disposition and naïveté of a child. This lessened significantly around ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', but started to trickle back in with [[VideoGame/SonicColors Colors]] and [[VideoGame/SonicGenerations Generations]].
* PintSizedPowerhouse: 2'7" tall, weighs 44 lbs. He's just as capable of demolishing robots as Sonic is, and at some points lifts four times his own weight and breaks rocks with his bare hands.
* ThePollyanna: He honestly believed that Eggman had truly reformed in ''VideoGame/SonicColors'', even though it's clear that he didn't.
* PowerCreepPowerSeep: Tails' competence and strength varies widely throughout the series. There's a fairly reliable metric, though: If he's non-playable, he's a NonActionGuy, though he can still keep up with Sonic. If he's playable, however, he's a LightningBruiser able to easily hold his own with the likes of Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow.
* PrehensileTail: [[spoiler: Tails shows this ability for the first time ever in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'', when he grabs the toothpick stuck in Zomom's sandwich to save himself from being robotized.]]
* PunnyName: Miles Prower = miles per hour.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter
* RudeHeroNiceSidekick: The mild-mannered sidekick to the snarky yet compassionate Sonic.
* RuleOfCool: Absolutely ''nothing'' makes sense about his propeller tails ability. At least with the Spin Dash you could kind of see how it works, even if it actually fails when you think about it. Apparently his tails aren't actually attached to his body, considering he can ball himself up without tucking in his tails, which can also explain how his propeller tails function.
* ScienceHero: He often uses his smarts and various gadgets to aid him and his friends save the day.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Can slip into this sometimes. (''VideoGame/SonicRiders'' hosts one of his most famous examples.)
* ShorterMeansSmarter: Justified in that he is much younger than most of the cast.
* {{Sidekick}}: To Sonic. He acts as a more humble and reasonable foil to the cocky, impulsive Sonic. But looks up to Sonic as an older brother figure, and doesn't have the {{Friendly Rival|ry}} characteristics of TheLancer.
* SleepyHead: Starts yawning in his idle pose in the classic games and in ''Sonic Adventure'', and falls asleep in ''Sonic Advance 2'' and ''Sonic 4: Episode 2''.
* ShockAndAwe: His most commonly used element, as used in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Battle [[IronicFear despite]] being portrayed as having a {{fear of lightning}}.
* TheSmartGuy: Tends to be more far more rational and analytic than his teammates.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: He's able to understand Flickies (the little blue birds).
* SuperMode:
** Super Tails, which has only appeared in ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'' so far. Unlike the rest of the characters, he needs the Super Emeralds rather than the Chaos Emeralds to achieve super form. According to WordOfGod, this is due to his inexperience and young age. He even has four Super Flickies to attack enemies for him.
** As of the 2013 re-release of the original ''Sonic the Hedgehog'', Tails can go super with just the Chaos Emeralds, but only if a hidden setting is used to make all seven show up.
** Tails also has a different SuperMode used in ''Sonic Heroes''. There is, however, quite a bit of confusion as to whether or not it's actually supposed to be Super Tails or not. The only visual difference is a golden shield surrounding him, but he has all the normal abilities associated with a Super form. Adding to the confusion is that Tails' and Knuckles' super forms in previous games only included them glowing, with no visual changes whatsoever.
** In ''VideoGame/SonicMania'', Tails has his Super form from the aforementioned re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog. Unlike every other appearance of Tails' Super form, there aren't any extra requirements - Get the Chaos Emeralds, and he can go Super as easily as the other two.
* SuperSpeed:
** His ability to move fast enough to keep up with Sonic impressed him enough that he took Tails as his sidekick.
** It's not always noticeable, but Tails has been shown to be very fast even ''without'' using his tails -- on par with, say, Amy or Espio, who are classified as Speed characters.
* SuperStrongChild: Although this can also apply to the other small children in the series, Tails is the only one consistently portrayed as being deceptively strong. Several games show him able to lift more than his own weight without hindering his flight (possibly up to ten tons if ''Tails' Skypatrol'' is any indication), breaking through rocks with his bare (or gloved) hands, and, of course, tearing through robots as a ball.
* TagalongKid: Subverted. While he does meet Sonic by initially following him, he ends up proving useful and Sonic decides to keep him around. From then on, he's one of Sonic's closest allies.
* TailSlap: Has this move in most of the Dreamcast era games.
* TakingTheBullet: Does this a few times -- He's back up within a few seconds.
* TaremeEyes: Has the softest, droopiest eye shape of the cast -- even more so than ''[[{{Kawaiiko}} Cream]]''.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Mint candy.
* TransformingMecha: His Cyclone mecha from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', which can switch between Tornado-esque plane, high-speed car, and walker.
* UndyingLoyalty: A consistent with almost every interpretation of Tails is that he is always by Sonic's side.
* VoiceForTheVoiceless: His classic self acts as this for Classic Sonic in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.
* WalkingTheEarth: He seems to spend time either doing this with Sonic, or in one of his multiple workshops.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Sonic's approval is very important to him, to the point where if he feels he doesn't have it makes Tails very upset. Fortunately, Sonic is already plenty proud of the young fox.
* WeakButSkilled: Classified this way in ''VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames''.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: An 8-year-old who is able to fly a plane and make some cool gadgets. Also, he's often the mediator between Sonic's friends.

-> '''Debut''': ''[[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Sonic the Hedgehog 3]]''
-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/NobutoshiCanna (Japanese, 1998-present), Creator/BrianDrummond (English, ''WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground''), Michael [=McGaharn=] (English, 1999), Ryan Drummond (English, 2000), Scott Dreier (English, 2001-2004), Creator/DanGreen (English, 2005-2010), Creator/TravisWillingham (English, 2010-present)
\
A red echidna from Angel Island, and guardian of the Master Emerald. He was first introduced as an antagonist in ''[[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles]]'', having been told by Eggman that Sonic and Tails intended to steal the Master Emerald. Halfway through the game, Eggman betrays Knuckles and steals the Master Emerald himself, which forced Knuckles to accept Sonic & Tails help in getting it back. Afterward, Knuckles would then be one of the duo's chief allies in fighting Eggman, but his guardian duties keep him out of the action most of the time. Not much of his past was known, but that changed with VideoGame/SonicAdventure which fleshed out his background quite a bit. Turns out, Knuckles is the last of the echindas after they were wiped out for attempting to use the the Emeralds and desecrating the shrine (and injuring numerous Chao) which the angered the at the time guardian [[PhysicalGod Chaos]]. Afterward, the piece of the shrine became Angel Island.

If Sonic is like the wind, then Knuckles is like the mountain; stern and unmovable. So naturally, they tend to butt heads, but do get along occasionally. Because of spending most of his life on a secluded island, he naturally prefers to be by himself and has quite the wild temper. However, despite these traits he's a nice guy, and more than willing to abandon his post to help out his friends.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: He got his own spinoff game, ''VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix'', for the Sega 32X.
* AloofAlly: Knuckles prefers to work in a solitude and keeping his distance from the others. But that's understandable since he is destined to live alone, guarding the Master Emerald.He doesn't mind working with others, but he prefers to work solely alone. It's even been lampshaded, in some of his theme songs, from the Dreamcast era:
** "I was born by myself. I don't need a partner, I get it on by myself, adversaries get shelved" - Sonic Adventure
** "This partnership is only temporary" - Sonic Adventure 2
* {{Adorkable}}: Despite his tough exterior, he can be adorably awkward at times, especially around girls.
* AlmostKiss: Shares one with Rouge after he saves her from falling in the lava in ''Sonic Adventure 2''.
* AntiHero: Has no hesitation in fighting other heroes or his own friends, if they get in his way.
* AntiVillain: In ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles''.
* TheArtifact:
** Knuckles was Sonic's original {{Foil}} and [[TheRival rival]], and remained as such until [[EvilTwin Shadow's]] debut in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''. Afterward, he just became another one of Sonic's allies before losing all relevance to the series after ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''. The only reason he even shows up nowadays is probably to remind people that he's still around. At least until ''Sonic Forces'', where he's [[AsskickingLeadsToLeadership the leader of the Resistance]].
** This also extends to the Master Emerald as well. The Chaos Emeralds have supplanted it as the series' primary {{Macguffin}}s, so the Master Emerald's only purpose was to give Knuckles an excuse to be in a game. Since ''Sonic Adventure 2'', it's only been relevant in ''Sonic Advance 3'' and ''Sonic Rivals''; mostly it's only mentioned in passing nowadays.
** His dredlocks, and the color of his shoes, were from when he was first conceptualized (he was originally meant to be Jamaican, apparently). Those stuck around long after that was forgotten about.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He's the leader of the Resistance in ''Sonic Forces''.
* BadassArmfold: He does this very often, and it looks extremely badass, despite the fact that he's badass already. .
* BadassBiker: In racing games, like ''Sonic Riders'' and ''Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing'', Knuckles usually rides a cycle of some kind.
* BadassInDistress: He gets captured off-screen in Sonic Triple Trouble as Sonic (or Tails, if you choose him) and is seen freeing him from a cage during the ending.
* BareFistedMonk: Well, his name ''is'' Knuckles...
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Rouge in ''Sonic Adventure 2'', complete with her nearly-{{Tsundere}} reactions towards him and an AlmostKiss when he saves her life (it doesn't help that [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZhyApeu1qs "Kick The Rock!"]], the BGM for Wild Canyon -- his first stage, right ''after'' he met Rouge -- is a [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar radar-jamming]] ballad of IntercourseWithYou, and later says that he doesn't love her). Later games have scaled back their romantic tension, reducing it to simple animosity.
* BerserkButton: Knuckles will always get angry for a lot of things, but one thing in particular would be anything that would involve stealing the Master Emerald. He was also clearly enraged about how Wave insulted Tails's hoverboard.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Knuckles is level-headed, down to earth, and doesn't take crap from anyone. Doctor Eggman never learns from this. Knuckles is kind enough to give him multiple chances to redeem himself, but as soon as he finds out Eggman's been taken advantage of him, it's payback time.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Much less prominent than Sonic, but does have his moments with both him and Tails, particularly in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' and ''VideoGame/SonicRiders''.
* TheBigGuy: Tends to solve most of his problems by punching them.
* BigShutUp: He occasionally says this to some characters in games such as ''Sonic Battle'' and ''Sonic Rivals''.
* BloodKnight: Knuckles is a brawler at heart, so he would naturally be this. His counterpart, Gawain from ''Sonic and the Black Knight'', noted that fighting a dragon would be an excellent way to test out his strength.
* BreakoutCharacter: He was this during the '90s, especially since he had his own comic book, upgraded into the main cast with Sonic and Tails, and had [[VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix his own video game]].
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: He's known for being tough and uses his spiky fists when in combat. He's also shown to be a nice guy and cares for his friends.
* TheBrute: Served as Eggman's muscle in ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'' and ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehogTripleTrouble''.
* ButtMonkey: Many later incarnations are more bumbling in tone.
* CartoonyTail: Knuckles' tail looks like it had been broken at one point, but in-universe echidnas usually have tails like that.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Knuckles` strength is never explicitly stated to be abnormal or superhuman, but rather an innate part of his nature.
* CharacterDevelopment: A bit subtle, but he went from being an adversary to Sonic, to being reluctant allies with him, and finally good friends (albeit with a competitive streak). It would take awhile, but it eventually developed into a genuine friendship. He even became Sonic's second best friend next to Tails. Though he's still the first one to call Sonic out for acting like a FearlessFool, they have developed a much more peaceful rivalry than with Sonic's other rivals.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Knuckles' personality seems to depend on the era he's in. In the Classic Era, he was a chuckling troublemaker who hindered Sonic's path in his debut. In the Dreamcast Era, he was a tough, no nonsense foil to Sonic's carefree lifestyle. In the Modern Era, he's even more of a hothead and finds himself constantly trying to one up Sonic, or play the series' ButtMonkey. In ''[[VideoGame/SonicMania Mania]]'', he's reverted to his ''[[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Sonic 3]]'' persona.
* ContinuitySnarl: [[SuperMode Super Knuckles]]'s existence. ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'' introduced Super Knuckles and Hyper Knuckles, but by the time of ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' Super Knuckles seems [[{{Retcon}} forgotten about]] in favour of having a "Super Shield" provided by Super Sonic, then in ''VideoGame/SonicMania'' Super Knuckles is back and the Super Emeralds are still around but go unused.
* CoolShades: Gets a pair in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' and in the ''VideoGame/SonicRiders'' series.
* CuteLittleFangs: Difficult to see them, but they're still there.
* DefeatMeansFriendship[=/=]DefeatMeansRespect: This is how he became an ally to Sonic. This also applies to his encounter with Rouge in Sonic Adventure 2.
* DependingOnTheWriter: Probably one of the more notable cases, Knuckles's personality and relationships change more widely than others. The series can't seem to decide if he's a reluctant ally of Sonic's and prefers to be alone, or a {{Friendly Rival|ry}} who wants to one-up Sonic and tries to tagalong in his adventures. Even how seriously he takes his guardian duties are subject to change; he either takes them completely serious and refuses to leave his post unless he's needed or constantly shirks his duties to go [[VideoGame/SonicRiders hoverboarding]], [[VideoGame/SonicGenerations birthday parties]], etc. etc. It's really hard to get a pin on him, the only consistent thing is his stoic and honorable nature, and his FriendlyRivalry with Sonic.
** In ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'', he's a GigglingVillain constantly tripping up Sonic's progress by activating all of Angel Island's traps and secret mechanisms, suggesting he's crafty.
** In ''Sonic Adventure'' and ''Sonic Adventure 2'' he's a quiet loner with a strong sense of duty to the Master Emerald.
** In the ''Sonic Riders'' series, he's a hot-headed competitor in the game, and a treasure hunter off-screen.
** In ''Sonic Mania Adventures'', he's TheParanoiac who thinks everyone, Sonic included, is trying to steal the Master Emerald from him.
* {{Determinator}}: Always persistent against pain, and never backs down.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: He has a prominent role in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' in which it leans to his connection with the Master Emerald and the Echidna clan.
* DishingOutDirt: Some of his moves in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' and ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* DreadlockRasta: WordOfGod says his quills are styled in dreadlocks. Although he is not a Rastafarian, Knuckles is in some media known to be a somewhat spiritual character. From the Dreamcast games and beyond, we see that other echidnas have this, making it part of Knuckles' culture, and not a fashion choice.
* EveryoneHasStandards: It was pretty obvious from his reaction, that he wanted to punch Wave in the face for bullying Tails.
* {{Fatal Flaw}}s: Knuckles is known to be rather gullible and naive, falling for Eggman's trickery on a regular basis. His short temper can also lead to him being easily riled up at times. Also his {{pride}} has gotten him in quite a bit of trouble over time.
* FieryRedHead: Sometimes.
* FireForgedFriends: With Sonic, although both still have the tendency to quarrel.
* {{Foil}}: As mentioned in his bio, he's one to Sonic. In fact, he was created with this trope in mind. He also gained one in Rouge after ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''. They're both treasure hunters, but he's rather HotBlooded and simple minded, while she's cunning and manipulative.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Supine.
* FriendlessBackground: He was actually born on Angel Island without anyone to look after him.
* GeniusBruiser: Especially in ''Sonic 3'', where he introduces himself by knocking Sonic out of his super form with ''one punch'', and then afterwards set up traps for Sonic all around the place.
* GigglingVillain: As an antagonist in ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'', where he constantly laughs at Sonic and Tails while messing with them.
* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: Having been living much of his life in isolation, Knuckles grew up believing in honesty and holds a firm and steadfast belief that there is good in everyone, which always lets him give people second chances. Naturally, Eggman has used this to his advantage to dupe him into fighting Sonic on multiple occasions.
* GoodIsNotNice: Seems to be this in some games.
* GoodIsNotSoft: He's a selfless and caring hero who risks his life to save pretty much anyone and tries his best to give people a second chance, even the villain who abuses his trust, but if he has to use brutal force to stop a villain who just won't listen, he will.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: He isn't called "Knuckles" for nothing.
* GreenEyedMonster: He's jealous of Sonic's adventurous lifestyle and fame he earns as a hero. This would explain his subtle hostility with the hedgehog, and [[VitriolicBestBuds their rocky relationship.]]
* GuileHero: Especially from ''Sonic 3'' up to ''Sonic Adventure 2''.
* GullibleLemmings: Tends to fall for Eggman's lies from time to time. Some fans [[NeverLiveItDown exaggerate this]] to unrealistic levels.
* HairTriggerTemper: Due to {{flanderization}}. He has a very short temper which can get the best of him at times. Characters like [[VitriolicBestBuds Sonic]] and [[BelligerentSexualTension Rouge]] are fond of pressing his buttons a lot.
* HeroAntagonist: His debut had him opposing Sonic and Tails due to Eggman lying and claiming they were trying to steal the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds. So Knuckles is simply just protecting his home from what he believes are invaders. Once Eggman's lies are revealed, he quickly joins the duo in stopping him.
* HeroicNeutral: Knuckles doesn't get himself involved in the conflict between Sonic and Dr. Eggman due to his dedication with guarding the Master Emerald, but he'll help Sonic and his friends when the situation calls for it.
* HiddenDepths: He looks like a tough guy, but is a kind and helpful guy who just wants to do the right thing.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: One line of his ''Sonic Adventure'' theme song "Unknown From M.E." states that he has "no such thing as weak spots".
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He trusts Eggman and thinks Sonic is the bad guy at first. [[{{Flanderization}} He doesn't seem to learn from his mistake, as Eggman tricks Knuckles into fighting against Sonic again on several occasions.]] His lack of good character judgement becomes a RunningGag over time.
* HotBlooded: As a result of {{Flanderization}}. He initially was, as mentioned above, a chuckling troublemaker in his debut and was rather mellow and down-to-earth (if not somewhat quick to anger, but not without justification) in the ''Adventure'' series and ''Heroes''.
* HumbleHero: Especially in the Sonic Adventure games, and Sonic Heroes. He is also the least arrogant rival of Sonic, while Shadow and Jet are more brash.
* ImageSong / IAmSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM8h2Xyis9M Unknown from M.E.]]"
* IneffectualLoner: He fits into this category due to being stuck in Angel Island with the given responsibility to guard the Master Emerald all his life. He has gotten used to be alone, but he still admits that he would like to spend more time with people outside.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Subverted. He is jealous of Sonic's freedom and getting the respect that he doesn't, but he's not trying to prove anything.
* InformedAttribute: Knuckles' reputation as a treasure hunter pops up sporadically even though he's only rarely seen in the act. [[RetCanon It first originated in the OVA]], where Knuckles is a wanderer and carries the gear to match. The ''Adventure'' series has an odd relationship with the idea, since while Knuckles' gameplay is, in fact, a treasure hunt, he engages in it exclusively as a function of his duties as the Guardian, and yet Sonic teasingly refers to him as "the world's greatest treasure hunter". In ''Riders: Free Gravity'', he provides some utility to the heroes by being able to decipher and explain ancient ruins as part of his capacity as a Treasure Hunter.
* InformedFlaw: According to official profiles, he dislikes strong sunlight. This only ever gets explicitly brought up twice: once in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' where he winces in the bright sunlight of Station Square, and once in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' where he grumbles about how bright Casino Park is.
* InformedAbility: A lot of manuals still mention his connection to the Master Emerald despite the fact that neither [[OutOfFocus it, Angel Island, or even Knuckles himself]] are very relevant to the series nowadays.
* InformedSpecies: Knuckles looks absolutely nothing like a real echidna, although he gets a pass on it due to being one of the few major characters based on the species in fiction.
* InspectorJavert: His role in ''[[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Sonic the Hedgehog 3]]''.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: For all of the disagreements, beefs and conflicts he has with Sonic, he's always willing to fight by his side.
* JokeCharacter: His playable role in ''VideoGame/SonicBlast'' unwittingly turned him into this. The levels are clearly designed with Sonic in mind and there are very few opportunities for Knuckles to take advantage of his gliding and wall climbing abilities. And even then, Knuckles glide in the game was ''heavily'' nerfed to where he can barely fly any distance at all with it and sinks like a rock in the air, his climbing is as slow as molasses, and trying to use the glide often can actually make the game [[FakeDifficulty harder]] because of the small screen resolution combined with offscreen enemies that Knuckles can accidentally buffet into--oh and did we mention he can't hurt enemies by gliding into them in this game? On top of that, Knuckles pathetic jump height means he can't reach areas Sonic can, and some of these areas ''can't'' be accessed by either wall climbing or gliding, which defeats the whole purpose of using the abilities anyway.
* TheJuggernaut: Super (and Hyper) Knuckles. Anything that Super Sonic can't handle, he can shake off.
* JumpedAtTheCall: In the ''Sonic Forces'' prequel comics, after Silver the Hedgehog warns Knuckles about a premonition from the future that said the world would be brought to ruin, Knuckles decides to step up and lead the charge against the cause of the events.
* TheLancer: Fits the traditional mold a lot better than Tails; literally ''everything'' about him is meant to be an opposite to Sonic and are generally presented as equals whenever Knuckles joins on adventures.
* LastOfHisKind: After the Chaos incident, he is the last surviving Echidna of the Knuckles Clan besides possibly Tikal.
* TheLeader: Commands the Resistance in ''VideoGame/SonicForces''.
* LeeroyJenkins: Falls into this in ''Forces'' due to his "Operation Big Wave" plan, which he freely admits to having thought up in a minute and a half. With Metropolis undermanned, Knuckles' plan to take the city amounts to nothing more than [[AttackAttackAttack going in hard and fast, and just destroying Eggman's army]]. This bites him in the ass when Eggman sends in Infinite, who uses the Phantom Ruby's power to utterly ''decimate'' the Resistance.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: How his altercations with Sonic in ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'', ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' and ''[[VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy Sonic Advance 2]]'' went.
* LightningBruiser: He's not quite as fast as Sonic, but Knuckles packs more of a punch.
* LogicalWeakness: ''Adventure 2'' shows that he's uncomfortable dealing with ghosts, which makes sense considering that he's a BareFistedMonk and would naturally have trouble dealing with them.
* LonerTurnedFriend: He starts becoming this after the events of ''Sonic Adventure 2''. He often joins Sonic and Tails in their adventures in battling Eggman and other threats in the world.
* LovableRogue: In ''Sonic 3'', due to the fact that he was an pawn of Doctor Eggman, tricked due to his belief in the good of people, and tried his best to protect the Master Emerald.
* MagmaMan: Some of his moves in ''Sonic Battle''. Also his most commonly used element, seen in the ''VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy'' and ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* MaliciousMisnaming: He can be referred to as "[[{{Pun}} Knucklehead]]" by Sonic on occasions in regards to him doing something thickheaded. Dr. Eggman has called him this in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' while taking the Master Emerald.
* MarriedToTheJob: To the point where some fans turn it up to eleven and literally [[CargoShip ship him with the Master Emerald]].
* MightyGlacier: Compared to the other characters. He's much slower than Sonic, but is also ''much'' stronger. Played straighter when [[CompetitiveBalance competitively balanced]].
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: The thing is that Knuckles believes in always giving people a new chance, which is why he repetitively trusts the EasilyForgiven Eggman, who always abuses Knuckles's trust and takes advantage of him. Though it gets the group in trouble, Knuckles means well. Some people call him dumb for this, but he's simply easy with forgiving people due to believing in the good of people.
* MrViceGuy: As heroic as Knuckles can be at times, he does suffer about three vices. One, he can be prideful about his echidna heritage. Two, he's [[GreenEyedMonster envious]] of Sonic's freedom and carefree nature. And three, he's quick to anger for a lot of things.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: This had gone hand in hand with his gullibility into thinking that Sonic was the bad guy. In his debut, this lead to Eggman to steal Master Emerald, and then in ''Sonic Adventure'', he caused Sonic to fumble two Chaos Emeralds after the two collided with each other (Knuckles thought that the green Emerald was a shard of the Master Emerald), causing Eggman to take them and power up Chaos in his fourth form.
-->'''Sonic''': "Way to go, [[{{Pun}} Knucklehead]]!"
* NobodyCallsMeChicken: You can get Knuckles to go along with a plan he initially disapproves of by either stroking or insulting his pride.
* NoRespectGuy: He's an exceptionally skilled fighter, a cunning TrapMaster on his home turf, and possess ancient knowledge not known to many. Yet, everyone treats him like an idiot due to his temper and lack of social fact.
* NoSocialSkills: Although he's [[CharacterDevelopment become more laid-back and jovial]], Knuckles has lived in isolation for most of his life, which may explain his gullibility and social naivety.
* NotBad: In ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', he says this to Sonic after he and Classic Sonic defeated The Time Eater. Because of this, Knuckles gets pushed into a tree by Amy who states that Sonic was all great.
* NotQuiteFlight: His dreadlocks give him the ability to glide for long distances.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He's usually TheStoic, no-nonsense one of the trio, but sometimes he also drops in on the fun. His FriendlyRivalry with Sonic is also rather playful, despite him being more mature than Sonic.
* OutOfFocus: Knuckles fell out of the spotlight for quite a few years. His last fully playable appearance (as in not as part of a team or a temporary side character) before ''VideoGame/SonicMania'' was in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', a gap of ''sixteen'' years.
* TheParanoiac: In ''Sonic Mania Adventures'', he's overprotective of the Master Emerald to the point where he thinks Sonic can't be trusted with it. He even sent Ray flying over the horizon [[DisproportionateRetribution just for touching the Emerald]].
* PerpetualFrowner: Although some artworks of him show him smiling in games like ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'' and ''Sonic Adventure'', other artworks made him to be this later on the series, mostly to convey him as serious or hot-tempered.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: He's one of the physically strongest characters in TheVerse (if not ''the strongest''), but only stands at a height of three feet, seven inches. In ''Heroes'', he is notably the shortest of the "Power" characters by far.
* PlayingWithFire: His most commonly used element, seen in the series and ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Happened in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''. After Eggman told him that Sonic is after the Master Emerald pieces, he immediately starts a fight with Sonic and Tails instead of directly asking the two about why they were after them, which could have prevented the whole fight in the first place.
* PowerFist: Has these in ''Sonic Adventure'' and its sequel.
* {{Pride}}: Has quite a bit of pride in his duty in guarding the Master Emerald and his SuperStrength. Attacking his pride is one way to rile him up.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Descendant from the "Knuckles Tribe", who were all just as boisterous and fight happy as he is.
* RealMenWearPink: His sprites in ''Sonic 3'' sans the ''& Knuckles'' expansion portray him as pinkish red, while playing with the expansion alters his hue towards a more "true red". His Super form in ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'' and ''Sonic Mania'', as well as his Hyper form in the former, are magenta. Games which feature both him and Mighty at the same time (''Mania, Chaotix'') tend to alter his palette back to being slightly more pink than red to make the two characters stand out more from each other.
* RebelLeader: In ''VideoGame/SonicForces'', he forms LaResistance after Dr. Eggman finally conquered the world.
* RedOnesGoFaster: Inverted. Even though he has some degree of SuperSpeed, he pales in comparison to Sonic and most other characters.
* RedOniBlueOni: In addition to the aforementioned above, its also played straight with his other FriendlyRivalry Rouge.
* ReformedButNotTamed: Downplayed. He started as a fairly antagonistic foe towards Sonic in his debut, but gradually developed into a quarrelsome yet trusted ally/friend.
* TheRival:
** Initially served this role to Sonic, but that was more due to Eggman's [[LetsYouAndHimFight manipulations]]. Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, the two became friends, [[VitriolicBestBuds although they still tend to have their disagreements on occasions.]]
** He found a new one in [[ClassyCatBurglar Rouge]], but its filled to the brim with tension due to her crush on him.
** In the ''VideoGame/SonicRiders'' series, he finds another rival in Storm when competing in Extreme Gear.
* RivalsTeamUp: With Sonic.
* RunningGag: Being tricked by Eggman to fight Sonic. In the DS version of ''VideoGame/SonicColors'', he gets tricked by [[TheRival Rouge]] in a subplot.
* SaveTheVillain: He saved Rouge from falling back in ''Sonic Adventure 2'', even if she was trying to steal the Master Emerald.
* ScrewDestiny: In ''Sonic Shuffle'', he inspirationally tells Void that he won't lose what he protects to him, and that the only reason why dreams don't come true, is because people give up on them.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He did this in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''. After the Master Emerald shards are lost during the approach to the ARK, Knuckles leaves Sonic and the others in the space shuttle to find them, with Tails stating that he bailed. After he successfully restores the emerald, he tries to reconnect with the others and finds Sonic, who asks him to look after Tails and Amy.
* ShockAndAwe: His "Thunder Arrow" LimitBreak as a boss and a Battle Mode character in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
* {{Shoryuken}}: Uses this in the ''VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy'' as part of his ThreeStrikeCombo and as an R-Trigger trick.
* ShrinkingViolet: Around girls.
* SkewedPriorities: In ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' when he, Sonic, Tails, and Amy enter Eggman's pyramid base he prioritize finding Rouge over stopping a possible world ending scheme.
* SingleSpecimenSpecies: He's the last of the Echidnas.
* SixthRanger: Started off as an antagonist before becoming an ally and rounding out the trio. Even after ''Sonic 3'' he still only fights with the gang when the situation calls for it.
* SlapSlapKiss: His relationship with Rouge often hits this territory.
* SpaceJews: He has a few stereotypical black man characteristics, and [[WhatCouldHaveBeen was originally supposed to have a Jamaican accent in Sonic Adventure.]]
* TheSpock: While he's not as smart as Tails or fast as Sonic, he's the most serious and task-orientated of the three.
* TheStoic: He's not as openly emotional as Sonic or Tails, rather keeping everything to himself, even his background of being the last of his kind. He is also a determined ace.
* StrongAndSkilled: He's described as being as [[SuperStrength strong]] as Sonic is [[SuperSpeed fast]], and is also a trained martial artist.
* SuperMode:
** In ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'', Super Knuckles and Hyper Knuckles. The former also appears in ''VideoGame/SonicMania''.
** Like Tails, Knuckles also has another SuperMode in ''Sonic Heroes''. For the same reasons listed under Tails' section, there's quite a bit of confusion as to whether or not it's Super Knuckles or not.
* SuperpowerLottery: In most of the games he's been in, he has quite a but of control over the elements.
* SuperStrength: In ''spades''.
* SupportingLeader: Becomes the Captain of the resistance in VideoGame/SonicForces in Sonic and Tails's absence.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Initially with Sonic. The second verse of his theme "Unknown From M.E." shows his vehement view on teamwork.
-->''Don't approve of him, but you got to trust him\
This alliance has a purpose\
This partnership is only temporary''
** Also, when Sonic and Knuckles are selected as a team in ''Sonic Advance 3'', both of their expressions are rather uncomfortable and disdainful. "Fighting Buddies" indeed.
** Him and Rouge became this in ''Sonic Rivals 2''. This is justified because Knuckles can't trust Rouge to help him retrieve the Master Emerald from Dr. Eggman.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In most games, Knuckles is hot-headed, and not very expressive, but maintains a friendly attitude, otherwise. However, in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' and in the ''VideoGame/SonicRivals'' series, he's pretty nasty compared to his usual self.
* TookALevelInKindness: Back in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog3'', he acted as sort of a troll, who pulled lots of pranks on Sonic and Tails, until he found out that he was being manipulated by Eggman. After joining them, Knuckles maintains a more friendly relationship with them, though he's still a bit short-tempered and usually prefers to be by himself.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Fruits, especially grapes.
* {{Tsundere}}: A rare male example, but he still has this quality in most incarnations.
* TsurimeEyes: They represent his more aggressive and tougher disposition compared to Sonic and Tails's TaremeEyes.
* UndyingLoyalty: To his friends and the Master Emerald.
* UnknownRival: It seems to be something of a running gag in the current games where Knuckles will try to say something to one up Sonic, only to be ignored by him and put into some demeaning situation.
* UnwittingPawn: Occasionally this to Eggman.
* WallCrawl: Using the spikes on his knuckles as anchors, he can climb walls.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog3''.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: His one fear, addressed almost exclusively in ''Sonic Adventure 2'', is ghosts. The BGM for Pumpkin Hill, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYCNQVIA-xg "A Ghost's Pumpkin Soup,"]] has Knuckles proclaiming that he fears nothing, going as far as to proclaim that ''the ghosts are afraid of him'', but he is seen to be visibly afraid when facing [[GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere King Boom Boo]] ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8Im0r86dKE unused audio also had Knuckles exasperatedly shriek upon seeing the giant apparition]]). By ''Heroes'', however, he seems to have overcome this, instead teasing Tails on ''his'' fear of ghosts in both Hang Castle and Mystic Mansion.
* WideEyedIdealist: According to his profile in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', the reason for his gullibility is his belief in the goodness of others.
* WiseBeyondHisYears: Is confirmed to be 16 years old, and has a few quotes of wisdom. One of them being this from ''VideoGame/SonicShuffle'':
-->'''Knuckles''': "Dreams don't betray us. When we lose ourselves, that's when we lose our dreams. It's not that dreams don't come true. We just give up on them."
* WithFriendsLikeThese: With Sonic in the earlier games, although later on, their teasing and arguing downsized.
* TheWorfEffect:
** Knuckles gets defeated by Chaos in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' despite Knuckles managing to defeat Chaos a few times earlier.
** He serves no purpose in ''VideoGame/SonicRush'', other than showing how tough Blaze is, as she effortlessly defeats him.
* WouldHitAGirl: Discussed. Rouge chastises him for fighting "a lady" for the pieces of the Master Emerald back in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''; Knuckles dismisses her claims to be a "lady" on the grounds that she's trying to steal his gems, but he apologizes afterwards for hurting her.

An energetic pink hedgehog whom Sonic rescued back in ''Sonic CD''. Initially she was a fan of Sonic's who she desperately wanted to meet, but their meeting was soon cut short with the arrival of Dr. Eggman and his new creation, Metal Sonic. Metal kidnapped Amy and Sonic had to save her and stop Eggman's plan of using Little Planet to mess with the timeline. After Eggman's defeat, Amy fell completely in love with Sonic and has made numerous attempts to start a relationship with him, often getting mixed up in his adventures as a result, much to his chagrin.

Amy has a very sweet and understanding personality. She always tries her best to understand and see the best in people and help them in any way she can and is very protective of her friends. Underneath her sweetness lies quite the temper however, something that even Sonic isn't immune to being on the receiving end of.

* ActionGirl: Starts turning into one in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', and fully blossoms into one by ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Advance|Trilogy}}''.
* AerithAndBob: While the other Sonic characters have names like Cream, Espio, Knuckles, Rouge, etc, Amy is a very common name for females.
* AllThereInTheManual: Character profiles give her full name as "Amy Rose the Hedgehog".
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: As proven in ''Sonic 2006'', she tells Silver that she would rather choose Sonic over the world.
* ArtEvolution: [[http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080824062737/sonic/images/c/cd/150px-Amy_Rose_First_Generation.png Here's what she used to look like.]] [[SoapOperaRapidAgingSyndrome She was once 8, sporting that look.]]
* AscendedExtra: The biggest example in the franchise. She originated in a line of manga to tie in to the first game's release, but would've been forgotten if not for Sega of Japan liking her design and needing a character for Sonic to rescue. Even then, Amy was a very minor character in the classic Sonic era, with her only major role being in ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehogCD Sonic CD]]'' (and even that role was a small DamselInDistress role)--otherwise she made no appearances in the main series games, and only made occasional bit player appearances in spinoffs, mainly ''Sonic R'' and the ''Drift'' games. It was ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' that upgraded her into a major series character, coinciding with her second redesign and personality overhaul.
* AscendedFanboy: Gender-inverted. Started off as a {{Fangirl}} with a PrecociousCrush, but has since become one of Sonic's closest friends.
* AssKicksYou: First in ''VideoGame/SonicTheFighters'', and then in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle''.
* BadassAdorable: Her weirdness can sometimes obstruct the "Adorable" part, though.
* BadassBoast: [[VideoGame/SonicHeroes "You want a fight? You've got one! Let's get that bloated buffoon!"]]
* BadassNormal: Compared to other characters. Sonic is fast, Tails can fly, Knuckles is strong, Blaze has pyrokinesis... and Amy has a hammer. She sometimes has super speed, but never to the same extent as even characters like Knuckles.
* BadassPacifist: While she has no reservations regarding violence, she has managed to convince two characters[[note]]Gamma in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' and Shadow in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''[[/note]] to perform a HeelFaceTurn with the power of her words. She also managed to stop Silver dead in his tracks with nothing but a glare when he tried to kill Sonic in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006''.
* BerserkButton:
** Don't hurt her friends, most especially Sonic. See MamaBear for more info.
** Don't suggest that [[AllLoveIsUnrequited Sonic doesn't return her feelings]].
** Sonic refusing to get romantically involved with her is a sure fire way to anger her. Also, [[VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight Sonic missing out on a date]], even if it was beyond his power.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She may be sweet and gentle, but it isn't wise to underestimate her. She can also be very unpleasant if you provoke her, although this aspect would be taken this too far often at times especially in later games. Not even Sonic is safe from her.
* BlowYouAway: Several attacks in several games show her to have tornado based hammer swings.
* BrattyHalfPint: Was less like this in her first several appearances, but grew into a straighter example in the series over time. Most media after ''Generations'' however have been downplaying this once more in favor of her sweeter side.
* TheCameo: [[spoiler: Makes a brief appearance in '' VideoGame/SonicMania'', in the form of the ''[[VideoGame/SonicR Amy Doll.]]'' ]]
* CanonImmigrant: [[MarthDebutedInSmashBros She debuted]] in a [[Manga/SonicTheHedgehog manga]] featured in the April 1992 issue of ''Shogaku Ninensei'' (Second Grade), technically making her Sonic's ''oldest'' recurring companion -- though her name was originally [[AdaptationNameChange Eimy]], she was [[AdaptationDyeJob brown]] at first, and she and Sonic (or more specifically, his SecretIdentity) were a [[AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul definite]] OfficialCouple.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: She started off as basically Sonic's answer to [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Princess Peach]], then ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' gave her a much more outgoing personality, and a temper to match.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She won't take it well if a girl her age or over so much as looks at Sonic despite that it's not what she truly thinks.
* ConjoinedEyes: Like Sonic, her eyes are sort of right next to each other.
* CoolBigSis: A surrogate one to Cream and Tails to a certain degree.
* CuteAndPsycho: Her temper and obsession with Sonic reaches near manic levels at times.
* CuteBruiser: She may be cute, but she knows how to use that hammer of hers.
* DamselInDistress: How she made her debut into the series, also tends to play it from time to time afterward as well. Fortunately, she's [[TookALevelInBadass taken enough levels in badassery]] to [[DamselOutOfDistress rescue herself most of the time.]]
* DeathGlare: There's ''[[http://images.wikia.com/sonic/images/3/30/Amy_Rush4.png this]]'' horrifying face seen in ''VideoGame/SonicRush'', which is used exactly once in the game (when she demands to know who Blaze is and why Sonic seems so interested in her).
* DependingOnTheWriter: She's hot-blooded and has a massive thing for Sonic, obviously, but how much either is in play tends to vary from game to game. ''Sonic Battle'' is pretty unkind to her, given that she apparently [[LoveMakesYouCrazy hallucinates so hard]] that she ''[[RealityWarper creates a dream-Sonic]]'' to help defend Emerl from Rouge. (As in, you have to fight both her ''and'' the imagined Sonic in one of the toughest fights of the game.)
* TheDeterminator: No matter what happens, she is ''not'' going to give up on Sonic.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Looking back at her first appearance, she's almost unrecognizable, sharing Sonic's quills, having a green and brown outfit with very little pink, not displaying anger at her capture by Eggman, and of course lacking her iconic hammer (which was called a "Magical Hammer" in ''Sonic the Fighters'' instead of a "Piko Piko Hammer"). Her manga appearances have her as a straight damsel.
* EgocentricTeamNaming: Not InUniverse, but the teams she leads always go by "Team Rose."
* EnemyDetectingRadar: Inverted: in her case, it's a Sonic-Detecting Radar. When Amy shows up as a character, she is very good at finding Sonic even if its by complete coincidence.
* FanGirl: Of Sonic obviously, and later on, she's very obsessed with him.
* FatalFlaw: Her one track obsession with Sonic has sometimes led her to get in danger's way. Some media also portray her as rather headstrong and prone to cause issues with her short temper.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine + Choleric
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Will befriend innocent animals, rivals, enemies if they're willing to listen, and especially robots. If Amy thinks she can make friends, she'll gladly try to do so.
* GenkiGirl: Amy's very energetic and cheerful. There are times when even Sonic seems worn out by her.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Her fur is entirely pink, loves fashion and sweets and is very romantic, but she's also a formidable fighter and is very able to use her hammer.
* GirlyBruiser: She's ladylike and has a rather childish crush on TheHero, but she also wields that hammer of hers like nobody's business.
* TheGlomp: Since ''Sonic CD'', it's a RunningGag for her to attempt to glomp Sonic, [[MistakenForObjectOfAffection only to end up clinging to another character altogether]]. She gets it right in ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed,'' only to believe otherwise due to the Werehog form.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: In ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' she's taken up boxercising to lose weight, so one of her attacks is punching opponents.
* GoThroughMe: Stood up to Sonic before he finishes Gamma ([[SelfServingMemory or before Tails does,]] or before ''Gamma'' defeats Sonic [[RashomonStyle depending on who you're playing as]]) in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' and later in the infamous ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', when Silver tries to issue Sonic a killing blow, Amy jumps right in front of him.
* HairTriggerTemper: At least since [[TookALevelInJerkass Taking A Level In Jerkass]]. She's prone to hit people with her hammer with little provocation, mostly Sonic.
* {{Hammerspace}}: A rather literal example too.
* TheHeart: Her other signature ability (beside skill with a hammer) is single-minded charisma. She has managed to make a combat robot, a pissed-off super-being in the midst of a RoaringRampageOfRevenge, and a vengeful psyker all back down, triggering a HeelFaceTurn from two of them in the process. This is (at least part of) the reason why she's a MoralityPet.
* HeartBeatDown: Has had a few heart-themed attacks since ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
* HopelessSuitor: Amy loves Sonic, but Sonic isn't interested. At the very least, Sonic considers her a good friend.
* HostageForMacGuffin: In ''Sonic Adventure 2'', she served as this for Eggman in exchange for a Chaos Emerald. [[spoiler:As well as to lure Sonic into a {{deathtrap}}. Good thing he figured out how to use Chaos Control, or he would've been space dust.]]
* IKnowMortalKombat: Doing Boxercise to lose weight in ''Battle'' further gave her some [[IncrediblyLamePun punch]] to her fighting prowess.
* ImageSong: "[[VideoGame/SonicAdventure My Sweet Passion]]". While it functions as the Team's over all theme, [[VideoGame/SonicHeroes Follow Me]]" is more about Amy than her teammates.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Despite its portrayal as a deadly weapon, the Piko Piko Hammer is based on an iconic Japanese noisemaker of the same name, and "piko piko" is an onomatopoeia for the squeaking sound the toy makes when someone is hit with it. Yes; Amy's weapon of choice is, in fact, a novelty item.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Despite her occasionally brash and hot-tempered nature, she always sees the best in people and never gives up. It's her optimism that gets Shadow to make a HeelFaceTurn and remember Maria's promise.
* TheIngenue: During her debut in ''Sonic CD'', Amy filled the role of the innocent damsel in distress. This role has since been passed to Cream.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: She's twice Cream's age, but they are shown to be close friends, almost akin to Sonic and Tails.
* {{Invisibility}}: In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', for some reason.
* JackOfAllStats: Though this varies from game-to-game, she's in between [[FragileSpeedster Sonic]] and [[MightyGlacier Knuckles]] in terms of speed and strength (thanks to her Piko Piko Hammer). She's even labeled as a Balanced Character in ''VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames''.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She's become a bit of a heroine in her own right, but she's still crazy for Sonic.
* LargeHam: If it's not Sonic or Eggman, she's likely the one doing the shouting. While she's fully capable of speaking quietly, even gently at times, more often than not she's the loudest in a conversation.
* TheLeader: When Team Rose is assembled, she's going to be the leader.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Amy generally has a rather unique moveset from other characters in many titles, making her harder to master, but with special abilities that can be exploited effectively. Her platforming roles such as the ''VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy'', as well as many spin off titles like ''VideoGame/SonicR'' or her [=PvP=] role in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' are good examples.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The Light to Rouge the Bat's' Dark Feminine.
* LittleMissBadass: 8 years old in her debut, 12 years old after the retcon, yet badass and cute all the way.
* LookalikeLovers: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] intentionally by [[WordOfGod SE]][[ExecutiveMeddling GA]] who ported Amy to the games to chase Sonic indefinitely and In-Universe Sonic has never officially admitted being interested in her. [[VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight However...]]
* LoonyFan: As a result of {{Flanderization}}, though this has gotten better as of late, depending on the game.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She fell instantly in love with Sonic; in Palmtree Panic Zone 1 (Present) and/or Stardust Speedway Zone 3, she'll immediately run to hug him upon sight.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: She's very...aggressive about her feelings for Sonic, ''especially'' if she feels like another girl is making moves on him.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: Not really dumb but her love for Sonic can sometimes make her a bit sidetracked, considering the fact she mistakes other hedgehogs (and a Werehog) for him, although for the Werehog, she isn't aware that it really is Sonic until he saves her from a group of Dark Gaia's spawn later on, and is embarrassed to think its happened again.
* MagicSkirt: Usually follows this despite her skirt belling out like it does. As a general rule, Amy has this except in games where she's playable. Some games seem to go out of their way to show her panties, though, particularly in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'', where Amy's underwear is literally the first thing you see in the Team Sonic vs. Team Rose cutscene.
* MamaBear: Amy is known to be quite defensive of her friends:
** In ''Sonic 2006'', she blocks Silver from trying to kill Sonic and while not trying to fight him, she [[WhatTheHellHero chews him out on it.]]
%% This is present in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' as well.
** In ''Sonic Adventure'', she bravely refused to give Birdie to Gamma despite the latter's demands, which then caused Gamma to have a change of heart and release her from her cell inside the Egg Carrier. Then later on the game, she stood up to Sonic (or Tails if you play his storyline), pleading him not to hurt Gamma, causing Sonic to relent, which means she will stand up ''to'' her friends to protect others.
%%* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Definitely.
%%--> '''Sonic''': [[KnowWhenToFoldThem I give up]]. [[LampshadeHanging She's so weird!]]
* MaybeEverAfter: Temporarily. In the HD version of ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed'', Amy asks Sonic out on a date, which the player can either accept or decline. At the end of ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight'', it's revealed that Sonic had a date with Amy, but missed it because of his adventure. Amy thinks it's just an excuse for him forgetting about their date, and promptly chases him with her hammer.
%%* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The Masculine Girl to Tails' Feminine Boy.
* MeaningfulName:
** Amy is one letter away from "ami", which means "friend" in French (Though the word is pronounced differently).
** Her name sounds similar to "amorous", befitting her affections toward Sonic.
* MistakenForObjectOfAffection: Apparently LoveMakesYouDumb enough to mistake other hedgehogs for Sonic, most notably Silver in ''Sonic 2006''.
* MoralityPet: Frequent role in later games, perhaps most notably for [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure E-102 Gamma]] and [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 Shadow the Hedgehog]].
* NeverBareHeaded: She's never seen without her red hairband.
* NiceGirl: She is very sweet-natured, kind, and helpful. And despite [[TookALevelInJerkass becoming bad-tempered and aggressive in the later games]], she still has her moments.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She can get ''too close'' when it comes to Sonic.
* NoSympathy: In the end of ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight'', she dismisses Sonic's reason for missing out on their date because he was sent to Arthurian times, and angrily chases him with her hammer.
* NotGoodWithRejection: She doesn't take it well when Sonic doesn't reciprocate her advances and is willing to bash him with a hammer. As of ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'', she's back to normal.
* OddNameOut: She's the only character so far with a conventional 'human' name, barring Tails' PunnyName. Formerly nicknamed Rosy the Rascal, which fits the naming scheme, but not her character.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: This line from ''VideoGame/SonicShuffle'':
-->'''Amy''': Forget about Sonic! Just look at my clothes!
* OvershadowedByAwesome: She's a quick-thinking BadassNormal who's decent in a fight, quite fast, good with machines and wields a giant hammer. But she tends to hang out with some of the strongest (Shadow, Knuckles), fastest (Sonic) and most intelligent (Tails) beings on the planet, so this happens to her a lot.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Emerl in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle''.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: With Sonic, literally and figuratively.
* PinkMeansFeminine: The primary example in the series.
* PluckyGirl: Doesn't matter what she faces, she'll never stop believing in her friends.
* PrecociousCrush: In ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehogCD Sonic CD]]'', she was 8 years old; Sonic, meanwhile, was stated to be approximately 15 or 16 years old in a Japanese ''[[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Sonic 3]]'' promotional video. In the modern games, Sonic remains 15, but Amy was bumped to 12. There's probably enough of a maturity gap for it to qualify for this trope, though. And with ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' implying that the difference between Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic is due to his age, it's likely Sonic was around 11 during the time of ''Sonic CD''.
* RescueRomance: She already liked Sonic before the events of ''Sonic CD'', saving her from Eggman just sealed the deal. [[NoGuyWantsToBeChased Much to Sonic's dismay...]]
* RoseHairedSweetie: It's even in her name. Has bright pink hair and one of the nicest members in the cast provided you've not made her upset.
* RousseauWasRight: Core part of her philosophy. The quote above was the very same one she used on Shadow that caused him to back down on his omnicidal revenge plot (a CMOA for her).
* RunningGag: See TheGlomp.
* {{Seers}} / MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: She can read Tarot Cards to predict the future or know what's happening, although [[ForgottenPhlebotinum this isn't often mentioned or used]].
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: Confidently considers herself Sonic's girlfriend, despite his protests to the contrary. And you'll do best not to correct her on this.
* ShipTease:
** In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', Sonic must take the [[OnlyTheWorthyMayPass Test of Love]] to progress to Kingdom Valley. His choice of [[OneTrueLove destined lover]] is either [[FirstGirlWins Amy Rose]] or [[LastGirlWins Princess Elise]]. The decision has no bearing on the plot, however.
** In ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed'', Sonic is hinted to have feelings for Amy due to his disappointment in her not recognizing him in Werehog form. In the Xbox 360 / [=PlayStation=] 3 version, he can even optionally accept an offer to go on a legit date with her after the adventure is over.
** Sonic cozies up to Amy's alternate self Lady Nimue in ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight'' astonishingly quickly, within the first thirty seconds of having met her, in fact. [[spoiler:Apparently, he agreed to go on a date with Amy, according to TheStinger]].
** However, Amy has had ship teasing with ''Shadow'' as well. In ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'', she gets concerned as to why Shadow was at Club Rouge and angry at Rouge when she wouldn't explain, and in ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'', Amy was practically swooning over Shadow when he defeated Devil Doom. If that's not enough, if you do the dark missions prior to Amy's mission, then do hers and the rest of the hero ones afterwards, that pathway is 'The Miracle Of Love'.
* SillyWalk: In at least ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', Amy is pigeon-toed with a short stride, which makes her the slowest running of the hedgehogs. She achieves her top speed by taking the biggest leaps possible.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She's in love with [[TheHero Sonic]], who's very brave, selfless and loyal.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: She's twelve, but technically still qualifies.
* SoapOperaRapidAgingSyndrome: Between ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehogCD'' and ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''. ''Generations'' seems to be doing away with this by implying that the entire cast had aged normally from kids to preteens/young teens between the Genesis and Dreamcast games - Amy's just had the most obvious change.
* StalkerWithACrush: What she tends to be when her {{Flanderization}} is at it's peak; otherwise, she's [[SubvertedTrope actually a rather muted example]] and only tends to run into Sonic by complete coincidence, or she's already apart of his adventures to begin with.
* SuperMode: Averted. While Sonic, Shadow, and Silver have all used the Chaos Emeralds to transform into super forms, Amy's never been implied to be capable of a similar feat. Even Blaze who's female and a cat has been shown to have a Burning form with the Sol Emeralds at least once. So far she's the only hedgehog that's not used Chaos powers in some way.
* SuperSpeed: In games where she's not a BadassNormal, though she's still relatively slow compared to most of the other characters.
* SuperStrength: In games where she's not a BadassNormal, though not at the level of other characters.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: She's a hedgehog, just like Sonic, Shadow, and Silver, but her spines are shorter than theirs, more closely resembling human hair. She also lacks spines on her back.
* TookALevelInBadass: Largely her plot in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''; keeps increasing from there.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Going hand in hand with DependingOnTheWriter, she can be downright nasty when at her worst.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Soft-serve ice cream.
* {{Tsundere}}: Develops into a Type-B variant over time; she's still nice and sweet, but she still has a temper and will lash out at those who upset her the slightest, even Sonic, [[ClingyJealousGirl mainly when he doesn't show any romantic interest around her.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Well, self-proclaimed girlfriend, at least. Still, hurting Sonic is a ''very'' bad idea and woe betide anyone who does so in her presence.
* WeightWoe: In ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'', Amy is obsessed with boxercise and dieting in order to get in shape and impress Sonic, using Emerl as a coach.
* {{Yandere}}: Shows slight shades of this, particularly in ''VideoGame/SonicRush''. Upon meeting Blaze, she warns her that she's Sonic's girlfriend, and that she won't let anyone else have him. Later, when Sonic asks Amy if he's seen Blaze, she immediately jumps to the conclusion that Sonic is in love with her, only calming down once Tails explains that it's not like that. It's PlayedForLaughs, of course, but her obsession with Sonic is clearly unhealthy.

->'''First appearance''': ''Sonic Mega Collection'' (as artwork)
->'''Debut as a character''': ''[[VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy Sonic Advance 2]]''

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/SayakaAoki (Japanese), Sarah Wulfeck (English, 2004), Rebecca Honig (English, 2005-2009), Creator/MichelleRuff (English, 2010-present)

A very young and polite rabbit and her pet chao, Cheese. Cream made her debut after her mother [[http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080120041707/sonic/images/d/d5/Vanilla.png Vanilla]] was kidnapped by Dr. Eggman in another one of his schemes, but was ultimately rescued by Sonic. Due to her young age, she tends to stay out of the action most of the time, but can step up if the situation calls for it.

Due to her upbringing, Cream is an extremely docile and polite individual. She refers to almost every character as "Mr." or "Ms." in their name. She's also a rather timid individual, but nonetheless tries her best to help her friends out when they need it.

* ABoyAndHisX: A Rabbit And Her Chao.
* ActionPet: Cheese usually does most of the attacking for Cream.
* ADayInTheLimelight: She's a rather minor supporting character in the series, but she does get a substantial role in ''Sonic Rush'' as Blaze's primary partner and part of the reason she lightens up.
* ActionGirl: She can sometimes be one, as shown in ''[[VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy Sonic Advance 2]]'' and ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* BadassAdorable: Cream is the youngest playable character in the series, and she kicks ass just as well as the rest of them. Cheese is this too.
** Sometimes, even ''better'' than her older teammates. Amy and Big both have a few games where they're completely reliant on their hammer or fishing rod, respectively, to attack. Cream's always got the option of curling into a ball and slamming into enemies like Team Sonic always does.
* BadassPacifist: Cream has strong reservations against violence and tries to solve problems through other means. But if all options are exhausted, she will use force if necessary.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's kind, polite, and soft-spoken, but if you force her hand, she can and she ''will'' kick your ass.
* BunniesForCuteness: Cream looks like a friendly little bunny girl.
* CheerfulChild: Despite all of the dangerous situations she finds herself in, Cream is always polite and respectful.
* CowardlyLion: As she's a young child, she is easily frightened. However, she does have her moments of bravery, and ''will'' get involved if she has to.
* TheCutie: A sweet-natured bunny.
* DisappearedDad: Strangely enough, despite being the only character with a parental figure.
* DistressedDamsel: In ''[[VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy Sonic Advance 2]]'', and ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog''.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In ''Sonic Mega Collection'' as concept art.
* EarsAsHair: Her ears resemble GirlishPigtails.
* EarWings: Can achieve flight by flapping her ears.
* EmpathyPet: Cheese often mirrors Cream's feelings.
* {{Flight}}: Is able to fly by flapping her ears.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine + Phlegmatic
* FreeRangeChildren: The only character shown to have a parent, and she's still seen to go wherever she wants, often without supervision.
* TheHeart: One of the most innocent and passive characters in the cast. While she can fight if need be, she prefers to stay on the sidelines.
* TheIngenue: A role she inherited from Amy.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: In ''VideoGame/SonicRush'', when introducing Amy and Knuckles, who she calls "short-sighted" and "not very bright" respectively, to Blaze.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Most of her friends are twice her age and over.
* JapanesePoliteness: With her tendency of bowing politely and calling everyone "Mr." or "Miss", Cream seems distinctly more Japanese than the other characters. Especially when you consider that while most of her friends are older than her, the majority of them are still only preteens/teenagers.
* {{Kawaiiko}}: Cute in a specifically Japanese sensibility (using honorifics or "Mr." or Ms" when addressing a character) in the series, contrasting with the rest of the cast's more Western behavior.
* KidHero: Cream is tied with Charmy as the youngest of the heroes, at age 6.
* TheLancer: She's Amy's best friend and acts as a calmer, nicer foil to Amy's {{Tsundere}} ways. She also acts as a Lancer of sorts to Blaze, as Cream helps her get over her antisocial ways.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: She considers Sonic to be like a big brother to her.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: She never goes anywhere without her Chao friend Cheese.
* MoralityPet: For Blaze throughout Sonic Rush.
* NiceGirl: She's the sweetest, most gentle character in the whole series. Vanilla taught her good manners.
* ProneToTears: She's usually a CheerfulChild, but she's highly sensitive and prone to tears.
* ReplacementFlatCharacter: Inverted. When Cream was introduced, she took on most of Amy's positive traits, such as her kindness and child-like innocence, while Amy's infatuation with Sonic was flanderized.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: She's an adorable [[BunniesForCuteness bunny]].
* SailorFuku: Her dress resembles a simplified version of one of these.
* SatelliteCharacter: Most of the time she gets a prominent role, it's usually a secondary one at best for other, more central characters. Mainly Amy & Blaze respectively.
* {{Sidekick}}: To Amy, and later Blaze.
* SkipOfInnocence: In ''VideoGame/SonicBattle''.
* SpoiledSweet: It's said that her mother treats her like [[{{Ojou}} a princess]], but she's a friendly, albeit naive and sheltered girl.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Cream looks a lot like her mother outside of attire and body shape.
* SuperDrowningSkills: Not really brought to the player's attention very much, but the closest she ever comes to swimming is using a floatie to stay on top of the water. Underwater, trying to activate her flying simply does not work.
* SweetTooth: Cream loves ice cream.
* TagalongKid: Especially when paired with the older characters.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Amy's Tomboy
* TechnicalPacifist: She dislikes violence, but ''will'' get involved in a fight if there are no other options, though it's often Cheese that does all the fighting.
* ThemeNaming: Combine her name with her mother's and pets' names, and you get "Cream Cheese" and "Vanilla ''Ice'' Cream".
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Her idle animation in ''Sonic Advance 2'' shows her eating an ice cream cone.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Closest thing to it in the series, and one of the reasons she's not too popular outside of Japan.

-->''"Froggy! Where are you?"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/ShunYashiro (Japanese, 1998-2001), Creator/TakashiNagasako (Japanese, 2003-present), Creator/JonStJohn (English, 1999-2004, 2009), Oliver Wyman (English, 2010, 2016), Creator/KyleHebert (English, 2010)

[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin A very large purple cat]] who lives in the Mystic Ruins along with his pet Frog, [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment Froggy]]. During the events of ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', Froggy ate a piece of Chaos which made him act strange and swallow the Chaos Emerald Big had found. Worried about his friend, Big set out to rescue him and gets caught up in the events as a result. Since then, he's become a good friend of Amy and Cream.

Despite his large size and strength to match, Big is a very gentle creature. He's also very laid-back preferring to spend his days fishing and sleeping in his house. Despite that however, Big is always there when his friends need him and really shows his true power when they're in danger.

* ABoyAndHisX: A Cat And His Frog.
* AcePilot: He's skilled enough to pilot Tails's plane in ''Sonic Adventure''.
* {{Acrofatic}}: Big may be fat, but he is a decent jumper and is very fast for someone of his size, fast enough to keep up with Amy Rose and Cream the Rabbit in ''Heroes''.
* ActionSurvivor: Unlike the rest of the cast in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', who arre all trying to stop Eggman (or in Amy and Gamma's case, helping a bird and finding its family respectively), Big is just someone who got caught up in the conflict because his pet was possessed by Chaos and he went on a journey to find him.
* ADayInTheLimelight: ''VisualNovel/BigsBigFishingAdventure3TheTrial'', a game created by Sega of Virgin Islands for April Fools' Day 2016.
* BeadyEyedLoser: He lacks sclera unlike the other characters in the series and is bit of a klutz at times.
* BerserkButton: Don't threaten his frog or his friends.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: It's not nice to tease Big's friends.
* BigFun: Big is very easy-going and fun to be around. He even lets people ride on his shoulders.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Seems to play this role in Team Rose, especially for Cream. Bullying her is about the one point he is shown to be genuinely angered.
-->'''Cream:''' I'm kinda scared...
-->'''Big:''' [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments Don't worry, I'll be right by you]].
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Sega and Sonic Team rather deliberately pretended Big didn't exist for a few years , due [[CreatorBacklash to having little use for]] a character who's primary trait was being astonishingly slow-witted. He's starting to pop up more often now, though.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Has a strange thought process, due in part to his rather easygoing nature.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: While he is seemingly dim and klutzy, he can pick up boulders and cars easily, exchange his fishing lure with an inner tube and a flail (on fire) and manages to stand up to not only Chaos, but Metal Overlord, actually telling the latter that they would pay for their actions prior and deals most of the damage to him during the Team Rose portion of the fight.
* DumbMuscle: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] as Big is more of a slow thinker than actually stupid.
* EpicFlail: In Heroes, after gaining enough power-up boxes, his fishing pole upgrades to a fishing pole with a flail in the place of a lure; oh, and it's on fire, too.
* {{Expy}}: Well, not of a specific character ''per se'', but he's very similar in personality to a typical Creator/HayaoMiyazaki creation, e.g. [[Anime/MyNeighborTotoro Totoro]].
* FatIdiot: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]: he's not really stupid, just simple.
* FishingMinigame: His gameplay in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''.
* TheFool: Big and his Quest for the Possessed Frog spend pretty much all of ''Sonic Adventure'' being completely incidental to the plot of the game.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: In ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', he can often be seen in silly situations, [[EasterEgg hidden in the background]] of certain stages and boss battles. Not in the ''Battle'' remake / port, unfortunately.
* FurryEarDissonance: His ears are ''much'' longer and pointier than a normal cat's.
* GeniusDitz: Implied to be, considering he can pilot the Tornado 2 without wrecking it as well as Eggman's mech in multiplayer mode for ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
* GentleGiant: Probably the most easygoing character in the series, despite being ostensibly one of its strongest.
* HeroesGoneFishing: In a literal sense. If his ImageSong was any indication, it may as well be his philosophy.
* ImageSong: "[[VideoGame/SonicAdventure Lazy Days (Livin' in Paradise)]]"
* KindheartedSimpleton: Possibly one of the dimmest protagonists, as well as one of the most gentle and soft tempered.
* LightningBruiser: In ''Heroes'': like Knuckles, he's not hampered by loops and just runs through them.
* MeaningfulName: He's big, just like his name implies.
* MegaNeko: Appropriately, as he's a big cat.
* MightyGlacier: One of the slowest characters in the series, but is quite strong, enough to be classified as a Power-type in ''Heroes''. He can effortlessly lift a car right over his head, throw boulders and smash right through stone obstacles.
* MovesetClone: He shares a lot of Knuckles's moves in VideoGame/SonicHeroes.
* NiceGuy: Docile, placid, gentle, protective, good-natured.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Despite sharing most features with the other anthro characters, his facial structure and limb proportions are different to most of the others. Even Blaze, another cat, looks drastically different from him.
* OutOfFocus: Due to the reception of his gameplay in ''Adventure'', his appearances were decreased from being playable to the point where he was only occasionally mentioned. This has skewed back in the other direction in recent years.
* ParasolParachute: In ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* RecurringExtra: He shows up a lot less frequently than other characters, which kinda makes his odd appearances stand out more.
* RodAndReelRepurposed:
** In ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', while he does use his fishing pole primarily for fishing, he can use it to attack enemies from a distance by aiming his lure at them. He can also use his fishing pole as a club if he is close to an enemy.
** In ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'', Big can use his fishing pole as a bat and Amy and Cream as balls to attack enemies. He can also swing his fishing pole in a circle to attack enemies around him with his lure.
* RunningGag:
** Occasionally seen throughout both campaigns as EasterEggs in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
** In ''Sonic and the Secret Rings'', he mysteriously pops up in the world of the Arabian Nights. By stopping at some particular places in particular missions, Sonic can see him. It's then possible to hear about this weird trip of his in the Bonus Book. Among the pictures you can get in the Bonus Book, many of those are about him trying to go fish... and one of those has him trying [[TooDumbToLive to fish in lava]].
* ShoulderTeammate: Amy and Cream can ride on his shoulders in VideoGame/SonicHeroes
* SimpletonVoice: Once initially provided by Jon St. John, [[PlayingAgainstType normally known for voicing]] VideoGame/DukeNukem!
* StockAnimalDiet: Likes fish since y'know, he's a cat.
* StoutStrength: Especially when he can lift up a car underneath a pothole in ''Sonic Adventure''.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Inverted. His eyes have a yellow tint to them. This makes him look more like a regular cat, making him look more like the KindheartedSimpleton he is.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: His line to Metal Madness in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' where he flat out tells him that he's in for a world of hurt for all the crap he's pulled.
-->'''Big''': You're going to ''pay'' for this!
* TookALevelInBadass: While having some degree of SuperStrength, he had a rather limited range of abilities in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' and could only walk very slowly. In ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' he can not only keep up with the rest of his team, but acts as their powerhouse, his weak pole attack now able to turn into a ''flaming flail'' that can take out mass enemies from a far away distance.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Fish.
* UnexpectedGameplayChange: ''Sonic Adventure''; In an action-platform game series, Big is a ''fisherman''.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He's 18 years old, the same age as Rouge.

-->''"I despise anyone who takes jewels from me... all the world's gems are mine to keep!"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''

!!!!!!Voiced by Rumi Ochiai (Japanese), Creator/LaniMinella (English, 2001-2004), Caren Manuel (English, 2005-2010), Creator/KarenStrassman (English, 2010-present)

-->A treasure-hunting bat in search of gemstones. She also works as a freelance government agent -- paid in jewels, of course. After Eggman had released Shadow, GUN had assigned her to infiltrate their inner circle and gather as much info on "Project Shadow" as possible. Sometime later, she came across the Master Emerald and tried to add it to her collection, but an intervention by Eggman and Knuckles thwarted her attempt. Afterward, she continued with her mission while trying to gather any Master Emerald shards before Knuckles could. After her mission was completed, she tried to make off with every set of emerald shards, but after a threat from Shadow and a final confrontation with Knuckles, she cut her losses and tried to escape before Professor Gerald's plan forced her to work with the rest of the cast to save the planet. Soon after, she gets wind of Eggman having a secret treasure and opts to loot it for herself, but only discovered an amnesic Shadow and the walking armory Omega, Rouge assumes leadership over the operation and an unlikely alliance is formed in order to get answers. Afterward, Rouge makes occasional appearances apart of Team Dark.

-->Rouge is vain, shady, manipulative and cunning. She loves getting her way and absolutely despises people who deny her that. Despite her questionable personality and motives, she does have a conscience. While it started off as professional, she does grow to genuinely care about her comrades' well-being, and shows gratitude towards gestures of kindness. She's also willing to put aside her selfish ways when there's a big enough threat.

* AffirmativeActionGirl: The first additional female character added to the series after Amy and debuted as TheRival to Knuckles in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
* AlmostKiss: Shares one with Knuckles after he saves her from falling into a lava pit in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. Also shares one with Shadow in ''Sonic Battle'' after letting him [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar spend the night in her house]] so he could recover from a fight.
* AntiHero: Of the NominalHero variety. She's a government spy, but expects to be paid with jewels.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: [[BrokenBase Contention is she either has feelings for Knuckles or Shadow]] [[FlipFlopOfGod due to varying and dubious sources]], and both of them are pretty tense in their own right.
* AffablyEvil: She might seem like an evil, bat thief working for Eggman and Shadow, but she actually works for GUN, which means that she was on the good side, so she's obviously not evil. She also acts polite towards her friends.
* BadassNormal: Shadow was developed to be the ultimate life form, and Omega is and was meant to be a walking arsenal of weapons. Aside from her flight, which is natural for a bat, and her abilities in the multiplayer mode and some spin-offs, Rouge doesn't have any powers besides her gadgets and combat prowess.
* BadassInDistress: Was locked inside a safe in Prison Island in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''. Shadow saves her before the island explodes.
* BeautyIsBad: Sometimes. She is the MsFanservice of the Sonic series, and is manipulative, sassy, and full of herself.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: This is the main reason that she gives Knuckles the remaining Master Emerald pieces after he saves her life in ''Sonic Adventure 2''.
* BerserkButton: Don't get in the way of her and jewels if you know what's good for you.
* CastingAShadow: Her "Black Wave" LimitBreak from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' as a boss and 2P Battle Mode character.
* ClassyCatBurglar: That's "[[InsistentTerminology treasure hunter]]!"
* CombatStilettos: Equipped with metal soles on her boots that allow her to dig like Knuckles, and do well for her combat abilities.
* CoolCar: Has one in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' and it's shaped just like [[Franchise/{{Batman}} the Batmobile]].
* CuteLittleFangs: You don't see them that often, but they're there.
* DarkActionGirl: In her debut. Afterward, she's more or less a good guy and more of a standard ActionGirl.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite using attacks of darkness like "Black Wave", she's definitely not evil.
* DatingCatwoman: Her relationship with Knuckles and Shadow (due to the latter's "dark knight" personality - pun not intended) can be described as this. Although subverted on Knuckles' part, since he's not cool with her trying to steal his Master Emerald.
* DeadpanSnarker: She never holds back her sass, that is for sure. She's fond of riling up Knuckles with it.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She became a much more caring person after striking up a friendship with Shadow, she's even shown to be concerned about his well being on occasion. By the time of ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', she's the only member of her team to be on such good terms with Sonic and his friends that she was invited to his birthday party.
* DudeMagnet: While not shown too much, she is shown to be so sexy in a mini-game of ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' that even Eggman's robots fall for her.
* {{Expy}}: Her design resembles [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} Morrigan]] as an anthropomorphic bat.
* FemmeFatale: The closest you're going to get in a family-friendly series such as this.
* {{Flight}} or NotQuiteFlight: Depending on the game, her wings allow her to either fly or glide like Knuckles.
* {{Foil}}: To Shadow (revealed in ''Sonic Battle'') and Knuckles.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine
* {{Greed}}: She loves gems and wishes that all the world's gems were hers.
* GuileHeroine: She was OutGambitted by Shadow in ''Adventure 2'', but she's still quite clever and crafty.
* HartmanHips: She is noticeably curvy on the hips, which also fits her status as MsFanservice.
* [[HeelFaceRevolvingDoor Heel–Face Revolving Door]]: She was a heel first, turned face by the end of ''Adventure 2'' by helping save the world, turned heel again in ''Heroes'' by forming Team Dark, then turned face again by ''Shadow the Hedgehog''. These days, she's mostly settled into her role as a face government agent, even if she is a little less straight-laced than a few other heroes.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She may be a thief and obsessed with jewelry, but she's far from being one of the bad guys. When push comes to shove, she will help others and do the right thing.
* HotWitch:
** She had a hidden costume in the battle mode of Sonic Adventure 2 where she was dressed as a witch.
** Again wears a witch outfit [[http://lastminutecontinue.com/wp-content/gallery/wallpapers/S/sonic-channel/wp144_1920x1200.jpg in this piece of illustration from Sonic Channel]].
* HumanoidFemaleAnimal: Aside from her ears, wings, and tail, she has the most human-like body proportions in the series.
* ImageSong: "[[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 Fly in the Freedom]]"
* ImprobableAge: She's a high-ranking government agent at the age of ''18 years old''.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She likes to act this way, though [[HiddenHeartOfGold she's smart enough to know it's not actually true]]...
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's a selfish, vain seductress who feels all of the world's gems are hers to keep, and has a sassy attitude. But she's capable of expressing gratitude when someone helps her, and shows genuine concern for her two comrades. [[CharacterizationMarchesOn She changes more as the series goes on, and slowly begins becoming more heroic.]]
* KickChick: In contrast to Knuckles' punches, Rouge mainly attacks with her feet. She even has metal soles on her boots for digging, using them to drill into the ground.
* TheLeader: Even though Shadow is the "face" of the team, she's really the leader of the three. Recently downplayed, since this was in effect Since ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'', Shadow is more this type of role in later plots.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The Dark to Amy's Light Feminine.
* LimitedWardrobe: Averted. Unlike most characters which basically keep the same outfit game after game, she regularly had different costumes. Her outfit from ''Sonic Adventure 2'' is her most common one, but she also had different outfits in ''Sonic Heroes''.
* LovableRogue: She's a government agent, but she's still a thief, too. Better yet, the title works even if [[RougeAnglesOfSatin you misspell it]]!
* MaleGaze: Sometimes it seems as if she poses for no apparent reason other than to [[http://images.wikia.com/sonic/images/4/47/Rouge_2.png highlight]] her [[http://images.wikia.com/sonic/images/2/29/Sonic_Generations_VS_Rouge_1.png cleavage]].
* ManipulativeBitch: Sometimes treads into this territory when jewels are involved.
* MovesetClone: Of Knuckles in her first appearance, then of Tails in ''Heroes''.
* MsFanservice: She has the largest breasts out of the Sonic girls due to her age, and somehow got away with JigglePhysics in a Sonic game (especially in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', though other games tend to do this as well). Her fanservice is more downplayed these days.
* MsViceGirl: Despite being heroic, no matter what side of the line she is on at the time, she wants "all the world's jewels".
* {{Narcissist}}: Her victory quotes in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' has her bragging about her accomplishments.
-->''(getting a "B" rank)'' It's all too easy for me!\
''(getting an "A" rank)'' How was that? Perfect, like me?
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Downplayed but the nice one of the three. Though she isn't the friendliest person in the world, she's the closest to nice in the group and by far the most social.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Her design eschews the RubberHoseLimbs of the rest of the cast and gives her [[HumanoidFemaleAnimal actual anatomy, namely human like breasts and hips.]]
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: If Rouge is on the scene, that's because there are jewels and/or gems nearby. She does her "treasure hunting" when not on government business.
* ParentService: Appearance wise and some of her quirks, she's practically the personification of GettingCrapPastTheRadar trope for the ''Sonic'' series. See the radar page for more details.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Her shirt which is shaped like a pink heart.
* PromotedToPlayable: After three games of being a non-playable rival character in the Olympics series, Rouge finally becomes playable in ''Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games'', but only in the Volleyball Event.
* ProudBeauty: Can be very vain about her looks.
* PunnyName: Rouge the Bat --> Baton Rouge. Rouge is also the French word for "red" although her color scheme doesn't contain red at all.
* RememberTheNewGuy: In ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', it's heavily implied that Knuckles has had to deal with Rouge before.
* SatelliteCharacter: Towards Shadow in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', she's mostly there just to help him out.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Also with a pair of wings, no less.
* ShadowArchetype: To Knuckles. While he cares about his emerald because of his job as its guardian, she believes that it's her job to collect all the jewels in the world for her own personal gain. Also, though they both have a tendency to stay calm in tough situations, Knuckles is far more hot-headed, which is one of the reasons why she likes teasing him as well.
* ShipTease: She gets this a lot with Knuckles and surprisingly Shadow.
* SkewedPriorities: In any scenario she's in that involves jewelry, the jewels ''always'' come first.
* SlapSlapKiss: Her relationship with Knuckles qualifies for this, especially in ''Sonic Adventure 2''.
* TheSmartGirl: She's easily the most cunning and clever of Team Dark.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Said to be mistaken for [[TheDitz a ditz]] due to her frivolous and flighty nature, but she's ''very'' sharp, cunning, and it's [[ObfuscatingStupidity very well likely her intention.]]
* SmugSnake: When she thinks she's right, she'll love rubbing it in her target's face. When she confronted Shadow in ''Adventure 2'' with information that he wasn't the "original" Shadow, she lowered her eyes and put on a knowing smirk. Too bad for her that Shadow [[ShutUpHannibal didn't really care]].
* SpyCatsuit: Her standard outfit, complete with ImpossiblyLowNeckline. Her ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' outfit has a CleavageWindow instead.
* TeamMom: Not as much as Amy is to Team Rose, but it's still pretty apparent that Rouge treats the rest of Team Dark like this in ''Heroes''.
-->'''Rouge''': Now you two make up so we can start looking for Eggman together!
-->(''After she tries getting Shadow and Omega to form a TeamHandStack with her'')
-->'''Rouge''': Ah yeah baby, this makes us a team!
* TheRival: Her relationship with Knuckles skirts between this and sexual tension. She and Amy aren't on particularly good terms either.
* TheTease: She sarcastically flirts with just about every male character. There is some debate over how "sarcastically" her flirting really is with Knuckles and/or Shadow.
* TeenGenius: She's an expert treasure hunter and government agent despite being only 18 years old.
* TeenSuperspy: Rouge is a master thief who works for the G.U.N. military force. She is also 18 years old.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: With Knuckles in ''Sonic Rivals 2''.
* ThrowDownTheBomblet: Uses Dummy Ring Bombs in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' and Heart Bombs in ''06'' and ''Generations''.
* TookALevelInKindness: As time goes on, we see she is willing to do the right things without the rewards, putting her closer and closer to an actual heroine.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Of the Dark Side path in ''Adventure 2''. She had no truly villainous or vengeful intentions, but she was still assisting Eggman to complete the Eclipse Cannon.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:When Shadow supposedly dies in the last story of ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', Sonic gives Rouge Shadow's limiter ring.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: Kinda gives off a Type B vibe; normally rather outgoing and charismatic, with a very deep hidden soft side.
* UndyingLoyalty: In '''06'', she tells Shadow that even if the world turns against him she will always be by his side.
* UngratefulBitch: In ''Sonic Adventure 2'' where she continues to argue with Knuckles after he saved her from falling down to the lava. Then it's ultimately subverted when she gives him back the pieces of the Master Emerald that she stole, [[BlatantLies under the premise 'they stink like echidnas do'.]]
* VillainProtagonist: Her role in some of the darker alternate media versions is this.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Shadow post ''Heroes'', even declaring to stand by his side no matter what in ''Sonic '06''. Although she and Shadow tend to snark at each other on occasions.
* VocalDissonance: Kathleen Delaney's Rouge voice makes her sound like she's in her thirties, even though Rouge is only 18 years old.
* WhenSheSmiles: Look carefully in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' after her fight with Knuckles. After he leaves, she makes not one but ''two'' genuinely beautiful smiles that are completely different from her normal devious and seductive expressions.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: She's not evil, but she's selfish and manipulative enough to qualify.
%%* Winged Humanoid

-->''"I am Omega, the ultimate E-series robot!"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/TaitenKusunoki (Japanese), Creator/JonStJohn (English, 2004), Jeff Kramer (English, 2005), Creator/MaddieBlaustein (English, 2006-2008), Creator/VicMignogna (English, 2010-present)

-->The last robot in Eggman's E-series line, fittingly named "Omega". After Eggman had moved onto to building bigger and better robots, he locked Omega away in one of his bases, with the implied purpose being to contain Shadow. After Rouge unwittingly awakened him, he decides to take revenge upon his creator to prove his worth, joining Rouge and Shadow on their quest. Sometime later, he would join his two friends as apart of GUN.

-->Fittingly, Omega has a very robotic personality, only single mindlessly focused on his revenge mission and nothing else. He does grow to consider Shadow and Rouge close friends though, and will always prioritize their word above anything else. Since he was designed as a battle robot, his first directive is to shoot first and ask questions later.

* AntiHero: In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', seeing how he also expresses regret when it was revealed that he was the one who sealed Shadow away, and it was implied to be against his will.
* AntiHeroSubstitute: To E-102 Gamma, who was a AntiVillain before making a [[HeelFaceTurn Heel–Face Turn]] out of care for others. Omega is a AntiHero who's less "reformed" than "[[NominalHero on the side that lets him defeat Eggman]]".
* ArchEnemy: Considers himself Eggman's, but it's pretty one-sided on his part as Eggman barely acknowledges him as a threat.
* ArmCannon: Two that have ''many'' weapons in them.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: He considers himself to be the best of Eggman's creations; every other robot created before or after he was? Complete rubbish in his (robotic) eyes. To be fair, he's legitimately powerful and probably is ''one'' of Eggman's best. [[spoiler:He even defeated [[TheJuggernaut Shadow]] and sealed him away in the BadFuture in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' if there was any doubt about his power.]]
* BerserkButton: Anything relating to Dr. Eggman. Also, in ''06'', Mephiles referencing [[spoiler:his (presumably unwilling) participation in sealing Shadow in the future.]]
* TheBigGuy: He's considered the "Power" of Team Dark and it shows.
* BetaTestBaddie: Being abandoned by Eggman in favor of other robot models has lead him to seek and destroy them to prove he is the best.
* CardCarryingVillain: He seems to consider himself an evil force, since he taunts Eggman by claiming that Team Dark will "show him what true evil is".
* DeadpanSnarker: This observation for when the rest of Team Dark fall off the stage arena in ''Heroes'':
-->Well, that's a load off my back.
* DoAnythingRobot: He has a weapon built in for ''[[CrazyPrepared any]]'' situation.
* FireBreathingWeapon: He uses them in ''Heroes'' for his combo, at a certain level.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric
* GatlingGood: Has concealed machine guns.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: He's usually on the good guys' side (even if his [[{{Revenge}} motives]] aren't that heroic), but he enjoys violence a bit ''too'' much and his dialogue can be rather disturbing at times.
* HiddenDepths: Despite all of his KillerRobot tropes, Omega is capable of empathy. When Rouge shows concern in ''Sonic Heroes'' that Shadow might not be the real Shadow, Omega states, in a roundabout way, that the real Shadow must exist which gives Rouge hope.
* HyperspaceArsenal: There is no other explanation for all his weapons. In ''Heroes'' he even launches multiple missiles that seem larger than his entire arm, and that's after his hands retract and seemingly vanish into thin air.
* {{Jerkass}}: He can be somewhat violent, TriggerHappy, and never addresses any character by name other than Shadow and Rouge.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Much like Shadow and Rouge, he's always on the side of good and deeply cares for his teammates, even if he doesn't really show it.
* KillerRobot: On the ''very'' subtle end of the spectrum.
* LastOfHisKind: He's the final model of the E-100 line of robots, fitting as [[MeaningfulName Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet.]]
* LeeroyJenkins: In Issue Three of the ''Sonic Forces'' prequel comic, Looming Shadow, Team Dark was supposed to use stealth to infiltrate Eggman’s base, but Omega decides to abandon that strategy and goes in head first and guns-blazing, much to Rouge’s annoyance. This ends up biting him hard in his metallic ass when he encounters Infinite, who wastes no time dealing out a CurbStompBattle.
* MachineMonotone: How he talks in every game, though some voice actors add a bit of "monster truck announcer" inflection on top of it.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: Has missile launchers.
* MeaningfulName: Omega is the last letter in the Greek alphabet. He is the last in the line of the E-100 series of robots.
* MightyGlacier: He's very powerful, but a lot slower than most other Sonic characters. That being said, he can at least keep up with his faster teammates. He was designed to keep Shadow contained after all.
* MoreDakka: He's a walking arsenal who's packing more heat than the US Military can dream of.
* MotiveDecay: He seems to have gotten over his grudge against Eggman for abandoning him, although there is a sense that he still loathes him.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Mean. A KillerRobot who's on the team for the sake of destruction.
* NoisyRobots: Definitely. Especially noticeable in ''06''.
* NominalHero: He only ever does anything heroic either because it involves his goal of getting revenge on Eggman for abandoning him for other robots, or because Shadow and Rouge asked him to help them out.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Considering his single-minded desire to destroy Eggman, you know it's a big deal when he formally changes targets to [[spoiler: Metal Sonic]] in ''Sonic Heroes''.
--->'''Omega:''' New target acquisition! Sights locked on [[spoiler:Metal Sonic]]!
** In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' he makes no [[WhyDontYaJustShootHim attempt to attack]] [[KillHimAlready Eggman]], who is in the vicinity while [[spoiler:Solaris is destroying everything.]]
--->'''Omega:''' Our targets are the Chaos Emeralds. I will begin the search immediately.
* PetTheDog: Despite his single-minded obsession with killing Eggman, he comforts Rouge at the end of their story in ''Heroes'' when she worries Shadow might be a clone or android.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Compared to Gamma. Omega is only 4 feet and 11 inches tall, whereas Gamma was 7 feet and 1 inch.
* PowerFloats: As with Gamma, he too can hover, though he doesn't seem to use this ability as often.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: How he's first seen in ''Sonic Heroes'', he doesn't live down the menace, much.
* {{Revenge}}: He wants revenge on Eggman for abandoning him for other robots, but is willing to hold off on it if there is a significant threat that must be dispose of such as Metal Sonic or Solaris. Even when [[WhyDontYaJustShootHim he has a clear shot]] [[KillHimAlready at Eggman]] who is in the vicinity.
* RoboSpeak: "Affirmative." ''Sonic Heroes'' played this mildly, with a cold monotone befitting an unfeeling robot but fairly smooth speech, ''06'' plays this painfully straight, with noticeable pauses between every syllable. ''Forces'' seems to have gone back to his ''Heroes'' speech pattern.
* RobotBuddy: To Shadow and Rouge. Those two are the only people that Omega would consider to be his "friends".
* SatelliteCharacter: Became one to Shadow after ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* SkewedPriorities: No matter what situation he faces, destroying Eggman and his armies ''always'' comes first. Especially shown in ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'' where despite the fact there was an ''alien invasion'' happening, his only priority was Eggman. Which is jarring considering there are other times he changes targets such as in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' where his priority is [[spoiler:Metal Sonic]] and in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' where his priority is to gather the Chaos Emeralds to defeat [[spoiler:Solaris]]. Even when [[WhyDontYaJustShootHim he has a clear shot]] [[KillHimAlready at Eggman]] who is in the vicinity.
* SpectacularSpinning: His entire body rotates while his legs stay still. In ''Heroes'', the third hit of his combo involves spinning around to shoot at pretty much everything in sight. He also does this for Team Dark's [[LimitBreak Team Blast]].
* StrengthEqualsWorthiness: One of his many motivations for fighting Eggman and his robot armies, and the main motivation for his destructiveness in general.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Omega has been on both sides of this trope. He replaced E-102 Gamma from VideoGame/SonicAdventure, and he was replaced by ''Chaos'' Gamma in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' (released closely to ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'') and E-10000 B in ''Sonic Free Riders''.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Initially with Shadow in ''Heroes''. They get better in later games.
* TelescopingRobot: How his {{Arm Cannon}}s seem to function.
* TheComicallySerious: "Beaten by fruits. How weak they must be."
* TinMan: As a robot, he's mostly emotionless, but he is capable of understanding the emotions of others and reacting accordingly.
* TriggerHappy: Not that he means to, but his shooting sprees do usually come out of left field.
* TurnedAgainstTheirMasters:
** If there was one word to describe him, his relationship with Eggman or even his comrades, it wouldn't be "loyal".
** In ''Shadow the Hedgehog'', Omega wants to take control of Eggman's army to create ''his own'' robot empire.
* UnexplainedRecovery: In ''Sonic Forces'', Omega was last seen deactivated with Tails trying to repair him, but he later shows up fully operational [[spoiler: for the final battle.]]
* WaveMotionGun: Combines this SpectacularSpinning during Team Dark's [[LimitBreak Team Blast]] in ''[[VideoGame/SonicHeroes Heroes]]''.
