* DidntThinkThisThrough: Jim thought that it would be best to keep Michael in the dark about his idea to get them both promoted, fearing that Michael's attempt to help would end up backfiring. After Michael botches Jim's plan to get them both promoted, Jim admits that he should have realized that Michael could do just as much damage in the dark.
* DumbassHasAPoint: Their attempts to prove it are ill-thought out at best, but it turns out that Darryl ''was'' faking his work injury.
* ExpospeakGag: The makeshift "cheese cart" has a platter of every cheese-related product Michael and Andy could find in the break room, which Andy proceeds to describe in the fanciest way he can. It's just Goldfish crackers, salad dressing, and spray cheese.
* ExtremeDoormat: Dwight wants to complain to corporate that Darryl faked his workplace injury because he was misusing company property. Darryl wants to complain to corporate that Dwight and Toby sexually harassed his sister while investigating the injury (see NotWhatItLooksLike below). Toby wants everyone to just [[StatusQuoIsGod drop it]] because nobody looks good here and paperwork is tedious. The agreement reached by Dwight, Darryl, and Toby is that Dwight and Darryl both make complaints to corporate and [[ButtMonkey Toby fills out all the paperwork]].
* HiddenDepths: Toby is a big fan of the FilmNoir genre, and mystery novels in general.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: In the ColdOpen, Michael calls in [[StraightGay Oscar]] because he's going to have a colonoscopy soon and he wants to know "what sensations to expect".
* JerkassHasAPoint: Jim's personal file has a lot of specific complaints about how much time he wastes flirting with Pam, with Michael commenting that it was written up by Toby, who's [[GreenEyedMonster shown envy towards their relationship before]]. However, he does make a point that Jim spends an inordinate amount of time slacking off.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Michael immediately begins to feel "partially responsible" after realizing he just talked David out of giving a promotion to Jim that would've also promoted himself, and seeing Jim's dejected face after David tells him as such in the parking lot.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Dwight and Toby are suspicious about Darryl's claim that he fell off a ladder to receive workman's comp, and stake out his house to investigate. There, they spot what looks like Darryl wearing a similar green jersey carrying a bag of dog food without crutches. Toby, enraged, shouts out "Are you going to eat all that dog food yourself?" only for the person to turn around to reveal a ''woman''. She's actually Darryl's sister, and he vows to make a complaint towards them for harassing her.
* RageBreakingPoint: Dwight has had little more than contempt for Jim due to his habit of undermining his authority and pranking him. [[NoJustNoReaction But finding out about Jim's promotion leaves him]] [[NightmareFuel screaming in rage at the end of the episode.]]
* StunnedSilence: Upon hearing from Michael's announcement that Jim has been promoted to co-manager of the Scranton branch, Dwight is visibly shocked such that he forgets to announce Darryl's fraud.
