!!This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
* CallBack: Misty puts on her [[MermaidingSwimsuit mermaid costume]] from "[[Recap/PokemonS1E61TheMistyMermaid The Misty Mermaid]]" again as part of her plan to tame Gyarados by reminding him of the ballet they performed when it was still a Magikarp.
* CerebusRetcon: This episode reveals that Misty had a traumatic experience of nearly being eaten by a Gyarados when she was a small toddler and suffers a crippling fear of them ever since. This revelation puts new context into Misty's irrational hatred and fear towards Gyarados throughout the original series, which is notable as she would otherwise consider all Water-Type Pokémon, even the ugly ones, to be beautiful creatures.
* CheatersNeverProsper: In their battle against Misty, the Invincible Pokémon Bros. seem incapable of doing anything without cheating.
** In the first match, Staryu vs Hitmonchan, Hitmonchan pretends to drown, prompting Misty to command Staryu help it, only for the fighting type to throw a cheap shot at Staryu and knock it out. Agent Joy disqualifies Hitmonchan and awards the point to Misty.
** In the second match, Corsola vs. Tentacruel, as the former is about to Tackle the latter, the two brothers who are not participating in the battle unleash ''their'' Tentacruel as well to all attack Corsola together, 3-on-1. They attempt to argue that since Misty accepted the challenge from all three collective brothers rather than just one of them, all three can battle her, but since the rules explicitly stated that the challenge would consist of three '''one-on-one''' battles, Joy unsurprisingly disqualifies them once again.
** After arguing back against Agent Joy's rulings, and then attacking both Gyarados ''and'' Misty, Joy bans the brothers from participating in offical Pokémon matches for life.
* CombatPragmatist:
** The Bros. pull this against Misty in both matches against her; Hitmonchan pulls a WoundedGazelleGambit only to sucker-punch Staryu when the latter tries to help it, and the other two brothers send out their own Tentacruel to dogpile on Corsola. Unfortunately for them, such dirty tactics aren't allowed in a fair gym battle, and it results in their disqualification.
** In an attempt to force Agent Joy to reverse the ruling, the Brothers have their three Tentacruel use Poison Sting on the caged Gyarados. When Misty herself jumps into the water and takes the attack herself to defend it, the brothers don't call the attack off, and in fact, one of the Tentacruel then Tackles Misty right into the bars of the cage and almost knocks her out. NiceJobFixingItVillain ensues.
* DefendCommand: Gyarados uses Protect to ward off the Invincible Pokémon Brothers' Pokeémon's attacks after Misty frees it.
* DisqualificationInducedVictory: The battle between Misty and the Invincible Pokémon Brothers consists of three 1-v-1 matches, and the first person to win two of them becomes the new gym leader of Cerulean. They don't even make it to the third match at all; the Brothers cheat and are subsequently disqualified in both of the first two battles, giving Misty a 2-0 win by default.
* ImagineSpot: Misty has one involving [[{{Expy}} Expys]] of Film/TheBluesBrothers of all things after spotting them on a tv as she's riding her bike at the beginning of the episode.
* LaserGuidedKarma: The Invincible Pokémon Bros. quite possibly have their careers as Pokémon trainers officially ruined as their cheating during their match with Misty not only makes Nurse Joy disqualify them, but also ban them from all official Pokémon matches for life when they argue with her ruling.
* MermaidingSwimsuit: Misty's magical mermaid costume from "[[Recap/PokemonS1E61TheMistyMermaid The Misty Mermaid]]" returns as an attempt to coax Gyarados's temper through nostalgic memories of the underwater ballet.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: The Invincible Pokémon Bros. unintentionally help Misty finally tame Gyarados when they have their Tentacruel attack it in its cage, forcing her to protect it and get knocked unconscious in the process, causing Gyarados to see how Misty cares about it and break out of its cage to save her from drowning.
* NobodyCallsMeChicken: When the Brothers argue that their 3-on-1 pile-on of their Tentacruel vs Corsola is within the boundaries of their battle since they all challenged her together, Misty mocks them about being too chicken to face her solo. This pisses them off enough that they all have their Tentacruel pile Poison Sting onto Corsola.
* SecretKeeper: The Nurse Joy in this episode is actually ''Agent'' Joy of the Pokemon Investigation Agency.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Gyarados seems to have a power to allow its trainer to breathe underwater. Once it breaks out of the cage, Misty has no problem, even though she ''was'' drowning before it broke free.
