An unexpected revelation from Susan leads Finn closer to answers about his past.
----
!!Tropes:
* AmbiguousSituation: [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation It's left to the audience's imagination]] if Martin, who's shown to be an emotionally manipulative ConMan, [[InLoveWithTheMark genuinely fell in love with Minerva]] or was always using her as a way out of trouble and then later a MealTicket.
** On the one hand despite saying he wants Minerva to take him to dinner he ends up paying -- with a huge gemstone of uncertain provenance.
* AsYouKnow: Kara/Susan explains Martin will be shuttled to "re-ed" after he's healed, and she jumps offscreen. [[LampshadeHanging Then she jumps back on-screen to explain that "re-ed" is short for "re-education"]].
* BaitAndSwitchComment:
** When an old woman offers a laser projector that shows a face as payment, Martin says "I don't like it. I ''love'' it!"
** Minerva makes up an excuse for Martin not to be re-educated.
-->'''Minerva''': I was completing checkout forms for Mr. Mertens, and it turns out he's medically unfit for re-ed. He's got a rare condition called garbage body.\
'''Seeker:''' Uh, that sounds completely fake--coming from anybody but you, Dr. Campbell!
* BecomingTheMask: Martin may have started out trying to con Minerva, but seemingly really decided to become a dedicated father and husband. He didn't purposely abandon his wife or child, even going so far to save Baby Finn from the Guardian when he could have just jumped overboard and abandoned Finn to be crushed. Unfortunately, after leaving, he seems to have relapsed, although this may be due to brain damage.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Martin becomes the first to get past the Colossus by [[GoForTheEye breaking open its eye and shining a laser-light into]], but this results in him and Finn being separated and lost at sea.
* ChekhovsGun: The laser projector Martin got as payment earlier is later used to blind the Colossus. Additional art implies that he ended up suffering brain damage.
* ComedicUnderwearExposure: As Martin [[ThePatientHasLeftTheBuilding tries to flee from the hospital]], his medical gown shown off to Minerva his underwear that say "[[ToiletHumor #1 at #2]]".
* ContinuityNod: The original human Founders are all but directly stated to be the tribe that Marceline helped escape from mainland Ooo a thousand years ago, with a statue of "Two Bread Tom" - their leader - in the park.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: Played with; Martin didn't intentionally abandon Finn, he took Finn with him while running from people out for blood, planned to escape by circling around the Island in a boat, and was separated after they ran into the Colossus, with Martin still trying to stay with Finn despite FIGHTING the Colossus, and only finally relenting when his only option became fleeing. Still, the situation was caused by Martin's own actions coming back to haunt him.
* DumbassNoMore: Susan Strong wasn't exactly an idiot, but recovering her memories lets her speak clearly instead of in [[YouNoTakeCandle broken English]].
-->''Dang, I missed big words!''
* EndangeringNewsBroadcast: When Martin appears on TV when Minerva accepts an award, the old lady he double-crossed recognizes him while in re-education and it allows her to find where he lives.
* EpicFail: Martin's interrupted attempt at fleeing the hospital results in a window crushing his hand, causing him to fall over, re-damaging his legs and giving him a concussion. But these injuries let him stave off re-education longer--long enough to get Minerva to exempt him from it entirely--[[ObfuscatingStupidity so maybe it wasn't completely accidental]].
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: When Finn's parents met, his mother was the doctor taking care of his father while his legs were broken, and Martin starts flirting almost immediately. This may or may not have just been Martin's ploy to use her as means to escape punishment.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The song [[http://adventuretime.wikia.com/wiki/Greatly_Appreciated "Greatly Appreciated"]] played during Minerva and Martin's together montage. Whatever happiness they had would not last long.
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: Martin, at least for a little while, was a good man, changed by Minerva's love, and palpably caring for Finn and Minerva. He wounded the Colossus, despite being completely unarmed and having to make sure baby Finn was safe throughout, only abandoning the life he had built with his family when he was utterly forced to. Neither Minerva nor Finn will ever know him as anything but a selfish, cowardly con-artist.
* InLoveWithTheMark: It's not clear if Martin really fell in love with Minerva or not, and, if he did, when it happened. They do have genuine chemistry, and he's not visibly up to anything bad while they're together.
* InsultBackfire:
-->'''Minerva:''' So what are you? A [[ConMan con artist]] or something?\
'''Martin:''' Yeah, you make it sound so glamorous.
* HouseHusband: Martin doesn't have a proper job during the time we see him living with Minerva and Finn, though he does get a certification as a barber just before he's forced to leave this life behind.
* PlayingBothSides: Martin takes payment from Hiders to guide them off the Island, then reports them to the Seekers to cover up that he can't really get them out. This backfires when one Hider forces him to come, he is arrested, and instead of passing it off as an misunderstanding, ends up getting assigned to re-education.
* PracticalCurrency: Martin only accepts payment in gadgets, though many are more novelties than useful. He [[JustForFun/OneOfUs apparently just finds the things nifty.]]
* RewatchBonus: Try watching Season 6's "The Visitor" again after finding out the truth about how Martin and Finn got separated.
* ShoutOut: A man with luscious hair who later goes bald becomes a barber and his current problems dealing with people may stem from a traumatic experience [[WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill sounds awfully familiar]].
* StunnedSilence: Finn is briefly at a loss for words when Susan tells him his mom is on the Founders Island.
* TimePassesMontage: A montage portrays Minerva and Martin dating, marrying, and having Finn.
* TrophyRoom: Minerva's wall is full of awards and personal congratulations from all the people she's helped. It also has Martin's diploma from a barber academy.
* WeaksauceWeakness: As it turns out, the gigantic, all-powerful Guardian can be duped with a laser pointer, as shining it into its optics results in it being blinded, which is how Martin manages to beat it.
* WhamLine:
-->'''Finn:''' So wait, why are going to Founders Island?\
'''Susan:''' I'm taking you back to your mom.
* WholeEpisodeFlashback: Most of the episode is a flashback to Finn's parents meeting, his birth, and Martin and Finn leaving the Island.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: When Minerva asks how Martin would con her, [[InvokedTrope he points out she likes helping people so he'd pretend to look as pathetic as possible]]. In what may or may not be a coincidence, he does just that while being taken away for re-education, and she saves him.
