"Spirit" is the fifth episode of season 2 of The Chosen.

After stirring the water, Jesus is now pursued by Simon the Zealot, Atticus, and Shmuel. John the Baptizer visits the group and tells Jesus his dangerous mission. Meanwhile, back at the camp, Mary Magdalene is devastated by an encounter with a mysterious and dangerous stranger.

!! This episode provides examples of:
* AccentInterest: Jesse recognizes that Atticus is Roman by his accent.Roman characters generally speak with American accents. Other characters generally speak with various Middle Eastern accents.
* AllIssuesArePoliticalIssues: This is what Yanni is trying to convince Shmuel of after finding out Nicodemus more or less quashed the inquiry into Jesus. Shmuel sees it as a moral imperative and has a bit of a seething disgust at the notion of making everything political.
* BigDamnHeroes: When the demoniac attacks Mary Magdalene, one hero fails, and the other succeeds.
** Simon the Zealot ambushes the demoniac before he reaches Mary Magdalene (after her IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight doesn't go well).
** When the demoniac gets the upper hand on Simon the Zealot, Jesus arrives and immediately exorcises him.
* BigYES: John's response to finally witnessing Jesus perform a miracle.
* CurbStompBattle: As the demon-possessed Caleb prepares to strangle the life out of Simon the Zealout, Jesus arrives and calls out to him... and the demon is immediately exorcised, saving both men on the spot.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Jesus directly quotes the trope's name as he tosses Simon the Zealot's dagger into the river, responding to the latter's bewilderment.
* FreshClue: Atticus finds Simon the Zealot's campfire, and his dagger which Jesus threw in the river.
* FunnySpoon: When the demoniac interrupts them while they're cooking, Thomas grabs the knife. Matthew grabs... the wooden soup spoon.
* GaggingOnYourWords: PlayedForDrama. Caleb tries to say the demon's name after Mary Magdalene requests it, visibly sputtering and choking on it, before suddenly stopping as the demon wrenches control back.
* GoodSmellsGood: Somewhat inverted, according to the demon possessing Caleb, those who have come into contact with Jesus (or even just someone who themselves interacted with Jesus) smell 'putrid' from holiness. Presumably a non-demonic entity that could smell holiness wouldn't find it so revolting.
* HeroicBsod: seeing a Roman soldier in uniform riding down the road gives Mary Magdalene a panic attack.
* HollywoodExorcism: Completely averted; Jesus just says a few words and it's done.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Mary Magdelene attempts this on the demonically possessed Caleb, trying to get the man to speak to them over the demon. This does not work.
* IllTakeThatAsACompliment: Caleb says that the demon possessing him has a bad feeling about Simon the Zealot. Simon smiles and says, "Thank you."
* INeverToldYouMyName: Jesse is startled when Atticus, a Roman he has never met, addresses him by name.
* JumpScare: John The Baptizer literally jumps from behind a bush to scare a group of disciples. Effective, as in the previous scene we encounter a demon-possessed man.
* MorningRoutine: We watch Simon the Zealot perform a series of martial arts exercises by his campfire.
* MundaneLuxury: Jesse still marvels at simply being able to walk, after being unable to walk for 38 years. During his interrogation by the pharisees, he never stops pacing, which irritates them. Later, he stares at his legs and grins as he walks down the street.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: A downplayed example. Due to her past experience being possessed, the presence of the demon Belial appears to trigger a migraine for Mary Magdelene, heralding the arrival of the demonically possessed Caleb before the other disciples present hears his howling.
* NewsTravelsFast: Atticus tells Jesse that word is out about his healing.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted and discussed with Simon Peter and Simon the Zealot.
--> Jesus: I'll stop you there. You're both Simons.
* PragmaticHero: Simon the Zealot refuses to kill Caleb, the demoniac, even after he begs to be killed. He points out that since the demon is unkillable, as long as Caleb maintains at least some lucidity its safer for everyone else that the demon remain tied to a single person instead of unleashed to harm others.
** Jesus also displays a bit of this, as he says to Simon the Zealot that he healed his brother's lameness to get the Zealot's attention.
* RunningGag: Jesse is surprised that the man who healed him would be from Nazareth.
* UndyingLoyalty: Simon the Zealot kneels before Jesus and pledges to do anything he asks. Jesus explains that Simon needs to understand the nature of his mission, asks to see Simon's dagger, and then throws it into the river.
