->'''Luther:''' I stayed because the world needed me.\
'''Diego:''' You stayed because you couldn't let go of the way things used to be. The Academy. Dad. With Allison. Dad's dead. Mom too, now. We're orphans again, dude.

"Man on the Moon" is the fourth episode of ''The Umbrella Academy'''s first season.

Seven years ago, Luther, then the only child left in the mansion, was severely wounded in a mission. Apparently to save his life, Reginald injected him with a serum that gave him his current body. Hazel and Cha-Cha have difficulty getting information out of Klaus. Diego confides in Eudora about the attack. Having heard from Klaus that Five is searching for the eyeballs' owner, Cha-Cha and Hazel blow up the lab.

Allison accosts Leonard in Vanya's apartment, and later gets a drink with her. Luther and Diego clash at first before going on to find Five, eventually stumbling upon him in the library. Klaus makes contact with Hazel and Cha-Cha's previous victims. Eudora busts into the motel room and frees Klaus, but is killed in the attempt. Klaus escapes through the vents with Hazel's briefcase, the contents of which teleport him elsewhere. Diego finds Eudora's body.

!!Tropes for this episode include:

* AirVentEscape: How Klaus manages to leave the motel room.
* AllMenArePerverts: Allison alerts Vanya to the possibility that Leonard let himself into her flat so he could jerk off on her teddy bear, then tells her that men can sometimes be unredeemable shits.
* CharacterDeath: Moments before she can arrest Hazel, Patch meets her untimely end when Cha-Cha shoots her in the back.
* TheDeadHaveNames: Klaus taunts Hazel and Cha-Cha with the names and deaths of their previous victims.
* FaceYourFears: Via flashback we learn that Reginald Hargreeves locked little Klaus in a crypt hoping that the exposure to the ghosts of the dead will cure him from his fear of them. It's apparent that this method didn't work out.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: After Klaus talks to Hazel and Cha-Cha about their past victims, Ben commends him on handling it. When it cuts back to Klaus, Ben and another of the assassins' victims high-five.
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: The cleaning lady at the motel doesn't hear Klaus in the closet because she has her earphones on.
* HitmanWithAHeart: Hazel is revealed to be this, having spared more victims than Cha-Cha would like.
* IntoxicationEnsues: Hazel and Cha-Cha ingest some of Klaus's weed chocolate, and are high as kites when they infiltrate the prosthetic lab.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Patch goes to rescue Klaus when she hears muffled sounds from a motel room. She ends up saving his life, but gets killed in turn because she forgot there were two intruders.
* NoodleIncident: Comes up in conversation between Hazel and Cha-Cha.
-->'''Hazel:''' Remember Trinidad?\
'''Cha-Cha:''' How could I forget Trinidad?
* OhCrap: Diego's boxing buddy delivers Patch's message that she found his brother at a motel. Diego and Luther look at the drunken Five, and both say, "Klaus" at the same time.
* OminouslyOpenDoor: Allison is alerted when she finds the door to Vanya's apartment ajar. Inside, she bumps into Leonard.
* PoorCommunicationKills: A downplayed but no less deadly example – at the start of the episode, Diego tells Patch his brother has been missing for two days. He's talking about Number Five, but Patch tracks down Klaus and gets shot by Hazel and Cha-Cha for her efforts.
* RapidFireNo: Diego's reaction when finding Patch's body.
* SentimentalMusicCue: When Diego finds the slain Patch at the hotel, the emotional ballad "This Year's Love" by Music/DavidGray is playing on the soundtrack.
* SomethingWeForgot: Diego and Luther realize they never accounted for Klaus after Hazel and Cha-Cha attacked them.
* SplitScreen: Used for the IntoxicationEnsues sequence.
* TauntingTheTransformed: Once the two of them start arguing again in "[[Recap/TheUmbrellaAcademy2019S01E04 Man On The Moon]", Diego jabs at Luther's self-esteem by first [[JerkassHasAPoint mocking him for remaining loyal]] to [[AbusiveParents Sir Reginald]] even after he turned him into a "monster," then [[KickTheDog snidely asking if nature documentaries turn him on now]].
* TooKinkyToTorture: Whilst being tortured by Hazel and Cha-Cha for 10 hours, Klaus turns out to be remarkably hard to break mostly because of this. His response to Cha-Cha strangling him with a belt is to complain that he didn't get to finish before she stopped to ask him more questions. Small subversion in that he does almost end up breaking in the end due to his withdrawal symptoms. Thankfully Ben and the ghosts of Hazel and Cha-Cha's other victims are able to rally him and arm him with some psychological firepower against them.
* TortureIsIneffective: In addition to the TooKinkyToTorture example, Klaus mocks Hazel and Cha-Cha for 1: kidnapping the one Hargreeve who doesn't know anything, and 2: who is so useless that no one will even notice he's gone, making him worthless as a hostage. Indeed, it's not until the very end of the episode (after Klaus has already escaped) that Allison realizes he's missing.
* VomitDiscretionShot: Number Five gets drunk, but his young body doesn't take it well. His vomiting is hidden from the camera, though.
* WhatTheHellHero: Pogo gives Luther and Diego a severe scolding when their bickering gets in the way of their search for Five.
* WhamShot: While his interaction with Allison in Vanya's apartment already raises a red flag, the confirmation that Leonard is not all that he seems is when he flushes Vanya's medication down the sink.
