'''Basic Trope''': LaResistance gets its hands dirty during the war.
* '''Straight''': Bob is a resistance fighter in [[LaResistance a Liberation Front-led revolution]] against the [[TheEmpire Troperitanian Empire]]. During the war, he watches some of his comrades commit war crimes, like engaging in [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique 'third-degree interrogations']] of captured enemy officers, plundering loyalist villages and towns, and [[LeaveNoWitnesses killing civilian witnesses]] during their raids.
* '''Exaggerated''':
** [[OverlyLongName Troperitania's People's Democratic Resistance Liberation Front of Light and Peace]] uses fear as its main weapon, [[RapePillageAndBurn massacres any settlement that has loyalist sympathies]], [[SinkTheLifeboats murders any and all enemy soldiers who try to surrender]], [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil allows its soldiers to rape people with utter abandon]], [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and crosses busy streets in areas without crosswalks]].
** The Resistance Liberation Front conducts brutal ethnic cleansing of certain groups and anyone with ties to them, as they feel they must be [[FeelingOppressedByTheirExistence "liberated from their existence"]].
** The Resistance Liberation Front wants to [[RageAgainstTheHeavens overthrow God]] and/or [[OmnicidalManiac destroy existence]] to recreate it as the ultimate act of rebellion.
** The rebels are AlwaysChaoticEvil and the RebelLeader is the BigBad and a CompleteMonster.
* '''Downplayed''':
** [[WellIntentionedExtremist The Liberation Front's Revolutionary Army]], while a bit tough when regarding captured enemies and local population, [[NobleDemon doesn't commit large-scale atrocities]].
** [[DirtyCommies The People's Liberation Front]] [[YourTerroristsAreOurFreedomFighters may commit terroristic deeds]] but [[FascistButInefficient the Troperitanian Empire]] commits just as bad (if not, worse) atrocities, [[BlackAndGrayMorality hence the formation of the Liberation Front to begin with.]]
** The rebels might use [[CombatPragmatist nasty tactics against enemy combatants]] (eg, chemical weapons, incendiaries, or booby traps, which are banned by the Geneva Convention), but will always try to avoid harming [[WouldNotShootACivilian civilians.]]
* '''Justified''':
** The RebelLeader cannot be everywhere at once, so it would be unfair to expect them to know what all their soldiers are doing at all times.
** Truth In Television; many revolutionary groups, from the Khemer Rouge to Che Guevara's guerilla militias, have ended up doing more harm to their countries than good. Just because a movement is revolting against an established power does not automatically make them the good guys.
** The Revolutionary Army is poorly disciplined, and often so poorly supplied that stealing from civilians is the only way to get food.
** In this story, HobbesWasRight and any attempt to overthrow the tyrannical government of TheEmpire is doomed to devolve into mindless brutality and therefore not worth pursuing.
** The Revolution is initially on the path of reform and peaceful protests but is crushed so brutally by TheEmpire that people start to accept that ViolenceIsTheOnlyOption, and those who were moderate (friends of the original protestors and reformists) go radical.
** While some of the Liberation Front's soldiers are in it for the cause, there are also plenty of amoral mercenaries as well as thugs who only signed on to get a chance to murder and pillage.
** The revolution has been dragged out for so long that most of the Liberation Front's new recruits were children when the revolution started, and as a result, they don't really understand the reasons behind the revolt beyond "overthrow TheEmpire" and unquestioningly buy into everything that they're fed. As a result, they are far more heavily radicalized.
** The Liberation Front [[MoralEventHorizon is fighting for an inherently unjustifiable cause]] such as [[UsefulNotes/AmericanCivilWar the "right" to own other humans as slaves]], "freedom" from the rule of a [[TheGoodKing benevolent King/Emperor]]/[[TheHighQueen Queen/Empress]]/other ruling class who happens to belong to [[FantasticRacism a racial/cultural/religious group they consider "unworthy", "evil"]], and/or [[FeelingOppressedByTheirExistence "oppressive"]], or the removal of a RagsToRoyalty monarch in exchange for one of "proper" birth, or [[ForTheEvulz just for the sake of seizing power for themselves]]. Or even all of the above. In other words, the rebels were the villains from the start. It's not hard to resort to bad methods when starting with bad intentions.
** All the Liberation Front wanted was [[FullCircleRevolution to depose the existing power and take it for themselves]]. They '''never''' actually promised any improvement.
* '''Inverted''':
** TheRevolutionWillNotBeVilified.
** WhatTheRomansHaveDoneForUs
* '''Subverted''':
** The Resistance is actually [[TheRevolutionWillNotBeVilified squeaky clean]], and TheEmpire is [[FalseFlagOperation dressing its soldiers up as rebels and sending them to massacre civilians]] [[MaliciousSlander to turn the populace against the rebellion]].
** There is no LaResistance, period. The so-called Liberation Front is actually a FalseFlagOperation that makes TheEmpire look better by comparison while discovering people with true rebel tendencies so the [[StateSec Thought Police]] can [[Literature/NineteenEightyFour arrest and execute them]].
* '''Double Subverted''':
** However, there are still some monsters in the Revolutionary Army who do commit atrocities when encountered.
** TheEmpire itself was formed from [[FullCircleRevolution a revolution that was every bit as brutal as the autocratic state it is now]].
** An actual revolution rises up, and becomes just as bad as the fake one.
* '''Parodied''': The Resistance Liberation Front's RebelLeader literally EatsBabies, and says stock freedom fighter lines in-between zapping innocent loyalists' homes and random imperial troops with [[LightIsNotGood holy light]]. When asked what TheEmpire did that was so bad, they avoid the question by a NonAnswer[=/=]ConceptsAreCheap[=/=]MeaninglessMeaningfulWords or just "selective deafness" instead of actually providing a real answer.
* '''Zig Zagged''':
** Given that the revolution happened hundreds of years ago, it's hard to tell what really happened. Some say the revolution was peaceful and lead to a period of prosperity, other say that the rebels were decent people even if they did deal out harsh justice to the worst of the offenders, others says the revolution was a bloodbath and the new regime was cruel and oppressive.
** The revolution happened many decades ago and enough time has passed for some form of credible historical academic consensus to form. The verdict seems to be along the lines of "a pox upon both your houses". On one hand, the Liberation Front is agreed to have been unspeakably brutal and their use of child soldiers, RapePillageAndBurn, slave labor (including international slave sales), and the ReignOfTerror that followed their rise to power are all well-documented. On the other hand, TheEmpire was renowned for their widespread use of death squads and rampant extrajudicial killings (as well as known or suspected rebel leaders dying in custody, including at least one credibly documented case of someone being tortured to death with a cutting torch), their indiscriminate use of chemical weapons, and the widespread presence of {{Sociopathic Soldier}}s, and they were a deeply corrupt regime with rampant economic and social inequality well before the rise of the Liberation Front.
* '''Averted''':
** The Revolutionary Army is highly disciplined, so it does ''not'' commit any and all atrocities, and nor does any one.
** The revolution is one of the kind that [[VelvetRevolution doesn't turn into a civil war and ends peacefully]].
** There is no revolution. The possible leaders of a revolt are discovered and taken care of before first shots are fired (whether through being [[TheExile exiled]], executed for treason, or ReleasedToElsewhere, is at the discretion of [[SecretPolice Imperial]] [[StateSec authorities]]), and [[StatusQuoIsGod everything goes on as before]].
* '''Enforced''':
** The author was a veteran in a loyalist militia during an actual revolution, and so does not have fond memories of the [[RagtagBunchOfMisfits plucky band]] [[ArmyOfThievesAndWhores of rebels]] who spent a decade fighting against everything he stands for.
** The author wants to give a [[GreyAndGrayMorality more historically accurate]] [[WarIsHell perspective to a revolution]] which is often (and incorrectly) treated as [[BlackAndWhiteMorality straight Good vs Evil]].
** The author is a revolutionary who really does believe ViolenceIsTheOnlyOption and feels that [[BrutalHonesty it's important for the people to be informed]] about the measures that are necessary and justify them in accordance to a certain ideology, while at the same time [[SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids making fun of the moderates]] and fence-sitters who are deluded about reforms.
** The main characters are loyalist citizens of the Empire or even acting servants/soldiers of it. Of course the movement trying to destroy their lives is antagonistic.
* '''Lampshaded''': "You know, after what I know you've done in the name of rebellion... are you really that different from the Empire you're fighting against?"
* '''Invoked''': Ivan, a high ranking member of the Liberation Front, explicitly orders his men to commit atrocities and purposely obstructs any chance for a peaceful resolution. The reason is that [[TheDreaded he wants to strike fear into his enemies]], and believes the best way of doing this is by [[EatsBabies eating children]].
* '''Exploited''': TheEmpire captures rebel atrocities on film and uses it in propaganda to paint the Liberation Front as being AlwaysChaoticEvil. Then it decides to [[WhatTheRomansHaveDoneForUs focus on social and economic reforms]] to persuade its populace to be even more loyal.
* '''Defied''':
** The RebelLeader holds their subordinates to a strict code of ethics, and any of their soldiers caught committing an atrocity is tried and executed.
** The United Nations sent Peacekeepers into the TheEmpire and established safe zones during the early stages of The Rebellion, making it abundantly clear that atrocities from either side would not be tolerated.
** The Empire is [[WhatTheRomansHaveDoneForUs efficient and benevolent enough]] that any revolution that can form would be minor and powerless. Why would there be any support for violent rebels when the people are happy? Any rebels that get a bit too violent are immediately crushed by the security forces (regular or [[SecretPolice secret]]) and written off as one-time TerroristsWithoutACause by the media.
* '''Discussed''':
** "The day that made me [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere leave the Liberation Front and flee the country]] is still [[ShellShockedVeteran burned into my nightmares]]. We had captured a loyalist town that we suspected had been feeding information to the Empire about revolutionary activities in the area, and we needed to know what they had been telling them. No one would talk. So we marched a crowd of people to the town square, picked half a dozen people at random, and [[ManOnFire necklaced them]] in front of the crowd and forced them to watch. Then another half-dozen, and another, until people started talking. [[HeelRealization That was when I knew]] that [[MotiveDecay whatever we were fighting for didn't matter]]. That we had [[HeWhoFightsMonsters become pure evil]]. I'll still remember the screams and the stench of burning rubber and flesh. Whatever better tomorrow we wanted to create would exist because of our evil, and [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone I could not live in that world with the knowledge of what I had been a part of]]."
--->'''Soldier Tim''': Tom, what if we're the bad guys? I mean, TheEmperor is kinda harsh-\
'''Soldier Tom''': Are you kidding?! Those Liberation Front bastards murdered every man and raped every woman in my village and called it "recompense" for not siding with them! [[EnemyOfMyEnemy Any side opposing these brutes is the side I want to be on!]]
* '''Conversed''': "So, another scene of puppy-kicking by the Liberation Front. The writer's sympathies are clear..."
* '''Implied''':
** The story takes place after the Troperitania Uprising was suppressed, and follows a Troperitania Army Veteran named Bob as [[NaziHunter he hunts down former Liberation Front members so as to bring them to justice]]. When he catches one Liberation Front officer and recognizes the man, [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown he beats the man to death]] [[AndThisIsFor while shouting the names of his loved ones]]. It's never stated in-story that Bob hunts rebels because the Liberation Front murdered his family, but [[WordOfGod the author later confirms that this is what happened]].
** The officials of the newly formed [[TheEmpire Troperitanian Empire]] speak of their rise to power as a liberation of the people, but their oppressive behavior suggests they committed many brutal atrocities to get were they are.
* '''Deconstructed''':
** The Revolution becomes so brutal that it is worse than the Empire it is fighting against, and as such [[RootingForTheEmpire the civilian populace wholeheartedly support the latter]]. The atrocities of the Liberation Front cause Imperial soldiers [[RoaringRampageofRevenge to become fanatical]]; they're not just fighting because The Empire pays well, they're fighting to avenge the murder of loyalist civilians. The Revolution becomes so brutal that both The Empire and its civilian population fight against it with everything they have, causing it to fail. The Resistance itself gains an almost [[ANaziByAnyOtherName Nazi-like]] level of infamy, to the point where even millennia later "Resistance fighter" [[GodwinsLaw is a byword for evil]], and a mere thought of a rebellion becomes as unimaginable to any decent person as, say, an urge to rape and murder someone.
** The leaders of the Revolution come to accept some form of violence, but they do this in the hope of controlling the direction of the movement, and preventing the truly bloodthirsty activists from coming to power. They believe that they can control the violence and kill fewer people by condoning some forms of violence, and they will even make sure to make some high profile rescues and pardons of prominent victims to show that the violence is only done by "radicals". Once their base is secure, [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness the executioners are submitted to a purge, a show trial]], and a HistoricalVillainUpgrade, and the Revolutionary regime that follows quietly rewrites history to paint itself and the movement as cleaner than it really was.
** The RebelLeader is an HonorBeforeReason hero, and as such is utterly horrified by how brutal their subordinates are. They can't prosecute the rapists and the child-killers because attempts to do so are blocked by their more radical subordinates. Finally, in a last-ditch gamble to reign in his uprising, the RebelLeader surrenders to the Empire -- not out of a change of heart, but rather in an attempt to shame the rebellion into adopting less ruthless methods. It fails, and the very same radicals they were trying to shame instead either paint them as a coward and a traitor (at best) or falsely claim that they turned himself in in exchange for the false-promised release of rebel Prisoners Of War (using him as a Martyr [[NiceJobBreakingItHero to inspire even more atrocities]].)
* '''Reconstructed''':
** While that particular revolution was defeated, The Empire still has serious problems and there will likely be another one down the road. When it does come, the new RebelLeader learns from the mistakes of his predecessors and ensures their soldiers obey UsefulNotes/TheLawsAndCustomsOfWar.
** TheEmperor and other leaders of the Empire note that, as extreme as the rebels were, they had some legitimate grievances. As such, they set about [[InternalReformist reforming the empire]] with the hope of the citizenry, creating a VelvetRevolution of sorts.
** Even with its atrocities, the Liberation Front is still the lesser evil than The Empire. Most of the victims were the wealthy and prominent and as such have access to publicists who will cry for them rather than the masses they leeched off. The new system is flawed and imperfect but has more opportunities and scope of advancement for more people than the old regime.
* '''Played For Laughs''': Liberation Front's fighters [[NukeEm detonate nuclear arms in major Imperial cities]] -- killing millions of innocent civilians -- simply [[FelonyMisdemeanor because the Emperor's Voice is slightly annoying]]. When asked about The Empire's actual transgressions (slavery, secret police, hereditary monarchy, etc.), LaResistance state that they can live with those so long as they "don't have to put up with that annoying voice!".
* '''Played For Drama''':
** The story kicks off when Liberation Front soldiers murder [[ActionSurvivor Henry's]] entire family -- along with every single civilian in [[DoomedHometown New Tropeburg, his home town]] -- simply because the Rebel Leader deemed that city guilty of supporting The Empire and wished to MakeAnExampleOfThem. The rest of the story follows Henry and his fellow survivors making their way through the war-torn Troperitania in the hopes of reaching a Refugee Camp or another country border. Along the way they encounter many more Liberation Front atrocities and even ambush and kill off their Death Squad.
** Bob is a member of the aristocracy or even the royal family of Troperitania [[NobleFugitive who has to run for his life]] now that the revolution broke out and all the nobles are hunted by {{Angry Mob}}s or the new regime's StateSec.
** Bob is a revolutionary who is generally fairly moderate, dislikes getting his hands dirty, and is greatly dismayed by some of the more brutal things he has seen his fellow revolutionaries do, but he has seen TheEmpire do some truly unspeakable things that make even the worst of what his peers have done pale in comparison, and he grows steadily more radicalized out of necessity and anger until [[HeWhoFightsMonsters he becomes his own antithesis and worse]], all while [[TautologicalTemplar being utterly convinced of his own moral infallibility]]. By the end, the man who used to be the first to call his peers out for something horrible that they did is [[BecameTheirOwnAntithesis the man who is notorious even among his peers]] for massacring prisoners, selling people into slavery (including selling women to sex traffickers), and using child soldiers.
** Bob joined the Liberation Front out of anger towards the incompetent and oppressive policies of the Empire. However, as the civil war grows, Bob sees a side of the revolution that is blind to the public eye. Not only are the revolutionary soldiers full of crooks, killers, and terrorists, but their leaders are corrupt shills taking bribes from the emperor's political rivals and/or money and arms from foreign powers who want the Empire gone for completely self-serving reasons. Furthermore, as the revolution grows more and more dogmatic and radical, Bob has grown increasingly disturbed by and disgusted with their brutality and bloodlust, and the mental gymnastics that they engage in to justify it. Bob is left with a choice: stay with the revolution that isn't as good as they claim, or defect from it and be considered a traitor by both sides.
