Go To

When a work leaves room for continued adventures or ends on an outright SequelHook, but is continued in a different medium.

This is most likely due to the original work not doing well financially, but has enough interest to merit continuation in a cheaper medium. Alternatively, they were ScrewedByTheNetwork of the original medium and they have to continue it in another. In case of movie continuation from other media, it may also mark a special part of the whole story.

See also ConclusionInAnotherMedium and its inverse RecycledTheSeries. Related to ExpandedUniverse when the other media-sequels are treated as a lesser canon. Compare AnimeFirst, ComicBookAdaptation, and LiveActionAdaptation, as well as {{Continuation}}, FanSequel and FlashForwardFic for FanFic examples. If the continuation is in the same medium that the predecessor was itself adapted from, see RecursiveAdaptation.

These are often subject to CanonDiscontinuity if a DistantSequel is made in the original, more mainstream medium after a sizeable SequelGap.

Note that {{Prequel}}s and {{Interquel}}s also count here; the point is that the works are all part of the same timeline.

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid'' is the manga continuation (the 4th season to be specific) of the anime ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers''.
* Even though the ''Franchise/DotHack'' franchise started with ''Anime/DotHackSign'', the entire storyline is told between numerous mediums. Chronologically, the story goes from novels (''Literature/DotHackAIBuster''), to anime (''Anime/DotHackSign''), to video games (''[[VideoGame/DotHackR1Games .hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine]]''), to anime that takes place during the games (''Anime/DotHackLiminality''), to novels (''.hack//ZERO''), to manga (''Manga/DotHackLegendOfTheTwilight''), to anime (''.hack//Roots'') that serves as both the prequel and epilogue to the corresponding video games (''VideoGame/DotHackGU''), that features a novel (''.hack//CELL'') as a side story between the two, to manga (''.hack//LINK''), to anime (''Anime/DotHackQuantum'').
** This isn't even counting non-canon retellings such as the ''.hack//XXXX'' and ''.hack//GU '' manga. Yeah.. [[CashCowFranchise Its that kind of series.]] There are more games in the works too.
* ''Anime/TheSkyCrawlers'' had a prequel in the form of a video game called ''The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces''.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' ended its run after 700 chapters. In addition to the SpinOffspring, there's [[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie a movie]] taking place during the TimeSkip before the DistantFinale, which wraps up the RomanceArc between Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuga.
* ''Film/TheNextGenerationPatlabor'' is the live-action sequel to the original ''Franchise/{{Patlabor}}'' OVA continuity, and is set 15 years after its conclusion. Which also makes it the DistantFinale, as most of the original cast have retired from the SVU by then.
* The classic animated film ''Anime/BloodTheLastVampire'' got a manga sequel, and said manga sequel got a video game sequel.
* ''Anime/YukiYunaIsAHero'' is a multimedia series. The anime was the first creation however was released concurrently with a light novel prequel, which was later given an animated adaptation. The series also has light novel sequels.
* The theatrical ''Franchise/DragonBall'' movies ''Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods'' and ''Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF'' are interquels occuring in the TimeSkip between Majin Buu's defeat and the manga's ending. They were later adapted into an anime/manga format in ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', which itself [[Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly got a movie sequel]] set after that series' ending.
* ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'' has the ''Ojamajo Doremi 16'' novel series, set during the girls' high school years. This was later followed up by the ''17'', ''18'', ''19'', and ''20'' series, focusing on the cast as young adults.
* ''Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico'' started as an anime, continued as the video game ''The Blank of Three Years'', jumped over to a movie ''The Prince of Darkness'', and would have ended as another game [[FranchiseKiller had the movie not bombed]].
* The anime ''Anime/GaoGaiGarFinal'' and ''Anime/{{Betterman}}'' got the WebSerialNovel followup ''Literature/KingOfKingsGaogaigarVSBetterman'', set eight years after the events of the former series.

[[folder:Asian Animation]]
* The story of ''Animation/BoBoiBoyGalaxy'' was not continued with a second proper television season; it was instead continued as a comic book series being advertised as Season 2.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Book]]
* ''Series/Watchmen2019'' is a TV sequel to the events of the original ''ComicBook/{{Watchmen}}'' comic, but in a universe that ignores both ''ComicBook/BeforeWatchmen'' and DC's ArcWelding of the original story in ''ComicBook/DCRebirth'', ''ComicBook/TheButton'', and ''ComicBook/DoomsdayClock''.
* The 2000 FirstPersonShooter video game ''VideoGame/KissPsychoCircusTheNightmareChild'' follows up the events of the ''ComicBook/KissPsychoCircus'' comic.
* ''Anime/ScottPilgrimTakesOff'': [[spoiler:As a result of time-travel shenanigans occurring after [[ComicBook/ScottPilgrim the original graphic novels]], the entire series qualifies as a StealthSequel.]]
* The comic book ''Second Contact'' is a crossover between ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' and ''ComicBook/XMen''. The novel ''Planet X'' is another one and acknowledges the first.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animated]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas'':
** ''VideoGame/TheNightmareBeforeChristmasOogiesRevenge'', a [=PS2=] and Xbox sequel to the film. It was based on a script for a film sequel that was cancelled after Creator/TimBurton convinced Disney not to do it. They chose not to throw it away entirely and made it into a video game instead.
** ''VideoGame/TheNightmareBeforeChristmasThePumpkinKing'' is a Gameboy Advance prequel to the movie.
* The first four levels of the ''WesternAnimation/OverTheHedge'' console game are directly taken from the climax of the movie. The rest of the game is a straight sequel where the animals raid houses and battle Dwayne the Verminator.
* The console ''WesternAnimation/MeetTheRobinsons'' game is a prequel, while the Game Boy Advance game is a sequel.
* ''Franchise/TheIncredibles'':
** The [[WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles1 first film]] has a video game sequel titled ''VideoGame/TheIncrediblesRiseOfTheUnderminer'' featuring the villain who appeared at the end of the film. The official ''WesternAnimation/Incredibles2'' wasn't announced until 13 years later.
** Originally [[{{ComicBook/The Incredibles|2009}} a comic book series]] continued from the first film and ended on a major cliffhanger, but was rendered non-canon when the sequel picked up from the first film itself. Ironically there's now ''another'' comic that takes place after the second movie.
* ''WesternAnimation/Cars1'' had a video-game follow up that preceded its [[WesternAnimation/Cars2 actual theatrical sequel]] with its [[VideoGame/{{Cars}} tie-in game]], wherein Lightning once again challenged Chick Hicks for the Piston Cup, and, unlike in the movie, succeeds in winning it.
* ''Franchise/{{Aladdin}}'':
** ''WesternAnimation/AladdinTheSeries'' is a sequel to the [[WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}} first]] and [[WesternAnimation/AladdinTheReturnOfJafar second]] movies and a prequel to the [[WesternAnimation/AladdinAndTheKingOfThieves third]] movie in the trilogy.
** ''VideoGame/DisneysAladdinInNasirasRevenge'' is a video game which takes place somewhere in-between ''WesternAnimation/AladdinTheSeries''.
* ''WesternAnimation/BigHero6TheSeries'' is this to the [[WesternAnimation/BigHero6 2014 film]].
* ''WesternAnimation/TangledTheSeries'' is a sequel to the [[WesternAnimation/{{Tangled}} original movie]], taking place between it and ''WesternAnimation/TangledEverAfter''.
* ''WesternAnimation/MonstersInc1'':
** Set after the end of the original movie, ''ComicBook/MonstersIncLaughFactory'' focuses on Mike and Sully trying to run the company and facing threats not only from a returning Randall and Waternoose, but [[spoiler:also Sid Phillips from ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory1'' of all people]].
** An interquel, ''WesternAnimation/MonstersAtWork'', is a streaming series set between the events of [[spoiler:Waternoose's arrest]] and the first movie's epilogue.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Frozen|2013}}'' has a few semi-canon sequels set between it and ''WesternAnimation/FrozenII'', starting with ''ComicBook/FrozenBreakingBoundaries''.
* While most of the Disney worlds in the ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' games are alternate depictions of the source material and the stories told in them are usually BroadStrokes retellings of the movies with the protagonists and the Heartless inserted, WordOfGod confirms that the Toy Box world in ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsIII'' was written collaboratively with Creator/{{Pixar}} to be a canonical ''Toy Story 2.5'', set between ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory2'' and ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory3'' in the continuity of the original films. While not explicitly stated, it can also be inferred that the same applies to the Monstropolis world, whose story similarly functions as a sequel to ''WesternAnimation/MonstersInc1''. The San Fransokyo world in ''III'' is written as a sequel to ''WesternAnimation/BigHero6'', though seemingly contradictory to ''WesternAnimation/BigHero6TheSeries'', as it concerns [[spoiler:the corruption and eventual restoration of Baymax's original body]].
* ''VideoGame/HeavyMetalFAKK2'' is a loose video game sequel to ''WesternAnimation/HeavyMetal2000''.
* ''VideoGame/TreasurePlanetBattleAtProcyon'' is the sequel to ''WesternAnimation/TreasurePlanet''.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Brave}}'' would be given a novel sequel in the form of ''Literature/{{Bravely}}'', written by Creator/MaggieStiefvater of ''Literature/TheRavenCycle'' fame. It focuses on Merida having to go on a quest to inspire her family to change and to save Dunbroch [[RaceAgainstTheClock within one year]] before the god of ruin, Feradach, destroys it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Literature/Heat2'', a prose novel written by Creator/MichaelMann as the sequel to his film ''Film/{{Heat}}''.
* ''ComicBook/MenInBlack: Retribution'', the comic sequel to the ''Film/MenInBlack'' film.
* ''Franchise/StarTrek'':
** ''Star Trek: Spock Reflections'', a FlashbackBPlot OriginsEpisode comic of the titular character, is set between ''Film/StarTrekGenerations'' and ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'' [[spoiler: with Spock retrieving Kirk's body on Veridian III]].
** The ''Star Trek: Countdown'' comic tetralogy is both a sequel to ''Film/StarTrekNemesis'' and an immediate prequel to ''Film/StarTrek2009''.
*** ''Star Trek: Nero'' details what happened of the ''Narada'' crew during the 25-year TimeSkip within the 2009 reboot.
** The ''Countdown to Darkness'' prequel comic for ''Film/StarTrekIntoDarkness''.
*** ''Star Trek: [[spoiler:Khan]]'' delves into the immediate aftermath of the ''Into Darkness'' climax while also being a StartOfDarkness for "John Harrison", Real Name: [[spoiler:Khan Noonien Singh]].
* ''Franchise/StarWars'':
** The [[Franchise/StarWarsExpandedUniverse Expanded Universe]] works as this, producing prequels, sequels, spinoffs and {{lower deck episode}}s in any possible medium beyond the theatrical films.
*** For the animated series, ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' is a sequel to ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'', and both ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Rebels]]'' and ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheBadBatch The Bad Batch]]'' are this to ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''.
*** The Creator/DisneyPlus live-action series ''Series/TheMandalorian'' and ''Series/TheBookOfBobaFett'' are both sequels to ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi''.
*** ''Series/ObiWanKenobi'' is a sequel to ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''.
*** How about a prequel to the prequel? As in, ''Series/{{Andor}}'' to ''Film/RogueOne''.
*** While ''Film/{{Solo}}'' didn't get a sequel, the story of Han Solo's early years before ''Film/ANewHope'' continued in the ''Han Solo and Chewbacca'' comic series. In addition, the Crimson Dawn syndicate and Qi'ra were followed up on in the event comic ''Crimson Reign''.
** [[Franchise/StarWarsLegends Legends]]:
*** ''Literature/SplinterOfTheMindsEye'' was originally intended to serve as the basis of a low-budget MadeForTVMovie if ''[[Film/ANewHope Star Wars]]'' wasn't popular enough to produce cinematic sequels. The TV film didn't prove necessary, but the book stands as the first Legends novel written.
*** The ''Literature/ShadowsOfTheEmpire'' multimedia project basically had this as its goal, making all of the merchandising tie-ins--centered around a novel, but also with a game, a comic, an orchestral soundtrack, trading cards, and action figures--for a movie set between ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' and ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi'', but without making the actual movie, as a sort of marketing dry-run for the prequels.
*** ''VideoGame/TheForceUnleashed'' was another multimedia project telling a story set between ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' and ''Film/ANewHope'', with the game as the centerpiece of this project.
* The ''Franchise/{{Alien}}'' movies got a video game {{interquel}}, ''VideoGame/AlienIsolation'', set within the internal 57-year gap between ''Film/{{Alien}}'' and ''Film/{{Aliens}}'' where you play as Ellen Ripley's adult daughter, Amanda.
* From the movie ''Film/PitchBlack'', we have:
** ''VideoGame/EscapeFromButcherBay'', video game prequel.
** ''VideoGame/AssaultOnDarkAthena'', the second video game prequel.
** ''WesternAnimation/DarkFury'', animated movie set just after the first movie.
* ''Film/TwoThousandOneASpaceOdyssey'' had a Creator/MarvelComics adaptation followed by a continuation.
* ''Film/{{TRON}}'':
** ''VideoGame/TronTwoPointOh'', a game sequel to the 1982 film, which fell into CanonDiscontinuity after ''Film/TronLegacy'' was announced. ''2.0'' also had a comic book sequel called ''Tron: Ghost in the Machine'' and a prequel in its GBA port, ''TRON 2.0: Killer App''.
** ''Film/TronLegacy'' has its own ExpandedUniverse in the form of interquels ''Tron: Betrayal'', the Flynn Lives! AlternateRealityGame, ''VideoGame/TronEvolution'', and ''WesternAnimation/TronUprising''.
* ''VideoGame/{{Hulk}}'' is a game sequel to ''Film/{{Hulk}}''. The game is followed by ''ComicBook/HulkGammaGames'', which is a comic book set after the game.
* ''Manga/ReturnToLabyrinth'', an "Amerimanga" sequel to ''Film/{{Labyrinth}}''. Creator/ArchaiaEntertainment also printed a prequel comic about the origins of the Goblin King Jareth. Both are officially licensed.
** Archaia also did ''The Power of The Dark Crystal''. A sequel comic to ''Film/TheDarkCrystal'' that was originally intended to be a movie.
* ''VideoGame/GhostbustersTheVideoGame'' is basically the third ''Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}}'' movie, while the [[ComicBook/{{Ghostbusters}} IDW comic]] continues the story from where the video game left off.
* ''Film/PacificRim'' has the prequel "Tales from Year Zero", and it's supposed to be getting a comic book series and an animated series.
* All the expansions of ''Franchise/TheMatrix'' - the video games, comics, ''Anime/TheAnimatrix'' - were intended by the creators to be canon to the films. This includes ''VideoGame/EnterTheMatrix'', which was created concurrently with ''Film/TheMatrixReloaded'' and weaves in and out of its storyline, and ''VideoGame/TheMatrixOnline'', which picks up where the movie trilogy left off.
* The ''Franchise/BackToTheFuture'' trilogy got follow-ups with [[WesternAnimation/BackToTheFuture an animated series]], a set of [[VideoGame/BackToTheFutureTheGame video games]], a [[ComicBook/BackToTheFuture comic book]], and even a (now defunct) [[Ride/BackToTheFutureTheRide theme park ride]].
* ''Film/WhoFramedRogerRabbit'' had plans for a sequel that all made their way to DevelopmentHell making it one of the most financially successful films ''not'' to get one. Apart from the [[WesternAnimation/RogerRabbitShorts 3 theatrically-released animated shorts]] and (maybe) ''Film/ChipNDaleRescueRangers2022'', the closest thing the film has to a true follow-up, as of now, come in the forms of ''Roger Rabbit: The Resurrection of Doom'', a Creator/MarvelComics sequel partially detailing Judge Doom's origins; the ''Roger Rabbit's Toontown'' comic series, and a few books by Creator/GaryWolf, the author of the original novel, ''Literature/WhoCensoredRogerRabbit''. Wolf, in fact, [[CreatorPreferredAdaptation loved the film adaptation so much]], he {{retcon}}ned the events of that novel as AllJustADream to make the subsequent works fit the movie's canon.
* ''Film/TheThing1982'':
** It was followed by a video game sequel 20 years later named simply ''VideoGame/{{The Thing|2002}}'', in which a rescue team investigates what happened at outpost #31 and encounters a Thing plague.
** The film surprisingly had several comic book continuations. ''ComicBook/TheThingFromAnotherWorld'', set after the film, has [=MacReady=] found by an ice-breaking ship and brought aboard, but naturally, a piece of the Thing manages to find its way on as well. This was followed by ''Climate of Fear'', set in a rainforest, and finally ''Eternal Vows'', set in a village in New Zealand. Another, ''Questionable Research'', is another attempt set directly after the film [[spoiler: (only [=MacReady=] and Childs die in this version before the story starts)]], focusing on a research team answering the S.O.S, finding the frozen remains of the Thing, bringing it on their ship and naturally all hell breaking loose.
* The animated film ''WesternAnimation/StarshipTroopersInvasion'' is a BroadStrokes sequel to the [[Film/StarshipTroopers live-action movies]] that incorporates a fair bit from [[Literature/StarshipTroopers the novel]] and [[WesternAnimation/RoughnecksStarshipTroopersChronicles the animated series]] as well.
* ''Film/SuperMarioBros1993'' notoriously ended in a SequelHook, but no sequel came after the film went on to be a critical and financial failure. The sequel eventually came in the form of a webcomic with creative input from one of the movie's writers.
* Creator/SMStirling's ''Literature/T2Trilogy'' of novels continues the story of ''Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay'' (Before ''Film/Terminator3RiseOfTheMachines'' or ''Series/TheSarahConnorChronicles'' were released).
* ''Film/ETTheExtraTerrestrial'' had a sequel novel, ''Literature/ETTheBookOfTheGreenPlanet'', giving the story of what happened when E.T. went home. It was written by William Kotzwinkle, who had written the novelization of the movie, and was presented as if it were the novelization of a non-existent sequel film, even being released in both a full novel and an abridged "storybook" with extra illustrations.
* The Japanese live action movie ''Film/{{Zeiram}}'' was followed a few years latter by the anime ''Anime/IriaZeiramTheAnimation''.
* The fantasy film ''Film/{{Willow}}'' had a sequel in the appropriate form of a trilogy of fantasy novels, known as the ''Literature/ChroniclesOfTheShadowWar''. They were credited as a collaboration between Creator/GeorgeLucas and Creator/ChrisClaremont, and pick up the story when Elora Danaan is an adult.
** The film received a further continuation in the form of a Creator/DisneyPlus series, ''Series/{{Willow}}.''
* ''Film/TheFlyII'' (which was itself a sequel to David Cronenberg's version of ''Film/{{The Fly|1986}}'') received a comicbook continuation in ''The Fly: Outbreak'' courtesy of Creator/IDWPublishing. Martin's continued experiments lead to more people getting infected. BodyHorror ensues.
* ''The Goonies II'' for the NES is a VideoGame sequel to ''Film/TheGoonies''.
* ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan'' got this in the form of [[VideoGame/TheAmazingSpiderMan a video game]] that continued the film's events despite being released around the same time. ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan2'' rendered it CanonDiscontinuity, though [[VideoGame/TheAmazingSpiderMan2 its own video game adaptation]] alters the story to continue from the first game's events and basically make it an AlternateContinuity.
* ''Series/StargateSG1'' is a TV series sequel to ''Film/{{Stargate}}'' in a BroadStrokes fashion.
* ''Film/{{Limitless}}'' had a sequel in form of a [[Series/{{Limitless}} TV series]], though focusing on a new protagonist and the main protagonist of the film has a supporting role in the series.
* ''Film/TheWarriors'':
** The [[VideoGame/TheWarriors video game]] acts as both a prequel (telling the story how the gang was formed, how certain members joined and how they gained their notoriety against other gangs) and a direct adaptation of the movie.
** A four part comic sequel subtitled "Jailbreak" which involved the gang going to break out Ajak after his arrest by the police in the main film.
* ''VideoGame/{{The Punisher|THQ}}'' is a game sequel to the [[Film/ThePunisher2004 2004 movie]].
* ''Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet'' attempted one after ''Film/FreddysDeadTheFinalNightmare'', a comic which went more into depth about Freddy's past, but it was cancelled after three issues.
* ''Chasing Dogma'': A midquel example for the ''Film/TheViewAskewniverse'', the comic follows Jay and Silent Bob from the events of ''Film/ChasingAmy'' and how they ended up coming to Bethany's rescue in ''Film/{{Dogma}}'' which in turn lead to their involvement in that movie.
* ''ComicBook/FreddyVsJasonVsAsh'' is a continuation of ''Film/FreddyVsJason'', made after the proposed sequel was shelved, though still had the movie script to use. As the title states, it featured Ash Williams of ''Franchise/EvilDead'' fame. It in itself got a sequel subtitled ''The Nightmare Warriors''.
* ''Film/INotStupidToo'' continues it's story in a 13-episode sitcom with the same title, but as a TV show it's DenserAndWackier than the film. It's predecessor, ''Film/INotStupid'', has a TV series too, but that one's a remake rather than a sequel.
* ''Film/NightOfTheLivingDead1968'': ''Barbara's Zombie Chronicles'' covers what happened to Barbara after she was carried off by her zombie brother in the original movie.
* ''Film/PowerRangers2017'' has a tie-in graphic novel, subtitled ''Aftershock'', which serves as an immediate sequel to the movie.
* ''Film/TheScorpionKing'' had a video game prequel ''VideoGame/TheScorpionKingRiseOfTheAkkadian'' and a video game sequel exclusively for the Gameboy Advance ''VideoGame/TheScorpionKingSwordOfOsiris''.
* ''Waldo's Hawaiian Holiday'' was a graphic novel released in 2008 as a supposed sequel to ''Film/RepoMan''. Alex Cox writes that the novel explains what happened to Otto 10 years after his disappearance.
* ''Film/GoodBurger'' got a sequel novel called ''Literature/GoodBurger2Go'' in 1998, which was originally intended to be a movie. An official ''Film/GoodBurger2'' came out in 2023 on Creator/ParamountPlus.
* ''Film/TheKarateKid'' series finished its [=LaRusso=] trilogy in [[Film/TheKarateKidPartIII 1989]], and had a SoftReboot in 1994 with ''Film/TheNextKarateKid'', and later a full ContinuityReboot [[Film/TheKarateKid2010 in 2010]]. In 2018, [=YouTube=] Premium (then known as [=YouTube=] Red) debuted the series ''Series/CobraKai'', an {{Unreboot}} which promoted StarterVillain Johnny Lawrence to protagonist status, which became a huge hit. For its third season (released on New Year's Day in 2021), the show would move to Netflix.
* The Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse continued the story of some characters on TV, first regular one (''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'' for Agent Coulson, ''Series/AgentCarter'' for Peggy Carter) and then Creator/DisneyPlus (''Series/WandaVision'', ''Series/TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier'', ''Series/{{Loki|2021}}'', ''Series/Hawkeye2021'').
* ''Film/GroundhogDay'' got a virtual reality video game sequel called ''VideoGame/GroundhogDayLikeFatherLikeSon'', [[SamePlotSequel which is pretty much just]] ''Groundhog Day'' but you play as the son of Phil Connors, Phil Connors Jr., and the game takes place in the modern day.
* ''Film/TheSuicideSquad'' is continued with the ''Series/{{Peacemaker|2022}}'' series, although it only focuses on the titular character.
* ''Film/{{Society}}'' had two sequel comics, with one even packaged with the film's deluxe DVD.
* The ''[[Film/TheSpanishApartment Spanish Apartment]]'' trilogy has a DistantSequel in the form of a Creator/PrimeVideo series, ''Greek Salad''.
* ''Film/UltramanZearth'' has a video game sequel, though oddly enough instead of an action / fighting game (like other ''Franchise/UltraSeries''-related video games at the time) it's an RPG. Said game brought back the Benzene aliens (the movies' villains, both of them whom survived their respective debut) and Zearth have to fight them again.
* ''Film/MakeTheYuletideGay'' received a sequel in novel form.
* Creator/RobinAskwith starred in a stage sequel to ''Film/ConfessionsOfAWindowCleaner'' entitled ''The Further Adventures of a Window Cleaner''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* ''Literature/TheDarkTower'' was adapted into a [[Film/TheDarkTower film of the same name]], with all marketing pointing to it being a loose adaptation. It was actually a StealthSequel.
* Zilpha Keatley Snyder's ''Literature/GreenSkyTrilogy'' was followed up with ''Below the Root'', a video game conclusion to the series.
* The same company also consulted with Creator/RayBradbury to make an authorized text adventure sequel to ''Literature/Fahrenheit451''.
* The first book ''and'' two chapters from the second book about ''Literature/{{Madicken}}'' were first adapted into a TV series in six parts. The rest of the second book was adapted into a movie. And to make things complicated, material from the first TV series was used to make a second movie and material from the first movie was used to make a second TV series.
* Creator/ChuckPalahniuk's ''Literature/FightClub'' eventually got a sequel, ''ComicBook/FightClub2'', published as a monthly comic book series later collected in trade paperback. A threequel, ''Fight Club 3'', was also released in this format.
* ''Literature/ParasiteEve'' is a novel that gained three sequels in video game form: ''VideoGame/ParasiteEve'', ''VideoGame/ParasiteEve2'', and ''VideoGame/The3rdBirthday''.
* ''VideoGame/TheWitcher'' games are the continuation of the [[Literature/TheWitcher books series]]. That being said, the author of the books [[DisownedAdaptation doesn't consider the games to be canon]].
* Several of Creator/HPLovecraft's works have received this treatment.
** ''Literature/AtTheMountainsOfMadness'' has two sequels in tabletop game format, with the ''Beyond the Moutnains of Madness'' campaign in ''TabletopGame/CallOfCthulhu'' and the ''Assault on the Mountains of Madness'' campaign in ''Achtung! Cthulhu''. The source book for the later even references the former, letting the keeper decide whether the two campaigns are canon with each other.
** ''Literature/TheShadowOverInnsmouth'' also has a prequel/sequel tabletop campaign in the "Escape from Innsmouth" scenario from ''TabletopGame/CallOfCthulhu''. It greatly expands on the federal government's raid on Innsmouth that was only briefly mentioned in the original story, while also extrapolating on what happened to both Innsmouth and the horrors it contained after the raid's conclusion. ''VideoGame/CallOfCthulhuDarkCornersOfTheEarth'' is a somewhat loose adaptation of this scenario.
* ''Literature/{{Ringworld}}'' was given a 1992 PC game sequel titled ''Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch''.
* ''Literature/HighSpeed2013'' was given a sequel in the form of the anime franchise ''Anime/{{Free}}''.

* ''Literature/HarryPotter'' was given a sequel in the form of the ''Theatre/HarryPotterAndTheCursedChild'' play, as well as prequels in the form of the ''Film/FantasticBeasts'' film series. Both of them are written by Creator/JKRowling[[note]]though the former was written by Jack Thorne, based on a story by Thorne, Rowling, and John Tiffany[[/note]], hence they are officially canon in both the book and [[Film/HarryPotter film]] versions of the [[Franchise/HarryPotter Wizarding World]].
* ''Literature/{{Dracula}}'' received a follow-up in the form of the InteractiveMovie video game ''VideoGame/DraculaUnleashed''. The ''Franchise/{{Castlevania}}'' series also tied itself in to the novel by way of ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaBloodlines'' starring John Morris, the son of the novel's Quincey.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' had some of its remaining plot threads resolved in the film ''Film/{{Serenity}}'' after the show's cancellation. It was then continued further in a series of comics, including both prequels and sequels to the other two installments.
* Franchise/{{Buffyverse}}:
** ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'' received a [[ComicBook/BuffyTheVampireSlayer direct continuation in comic book form]] and went on for five more "seasons" before finally ending for good and undergoing [[ComicBook/BuffyTheVampireSlayerBoomStudios a new comic with it's own continuity]].
** Likewise ''Series/{{Angel}}'' which provides closure where the original series left off.
** ''Series/{{Angel}}'': "[[ComicBook/AngelIDW After the Fall]]" covers where the show's BolivianArmyEnding left off and Angel's struggles in a Los Angeles ravaged by monsters.
* ''Series/DadsArmy'' had the 1981 [[Creator/TheBBC BBC Radio]] series ''It Sticks Out Half a Mile'' by Harold Snoad and Creator/MichaelKnowles (who had adapted some of the television episodes for radio), told what happened to some of the characters after the war:
** The original {{Pilot}} episode, set in 1948, involved Mainwaring deciding to renovate a decrepit seaside pier in the fictional town of Frambourne-on-Sea, only to find when applying for a bank loan that the manager of the local branch is none other than Wilson. Following Creator/ArthurLowe's death, it was retooled (the original pilot was aired many years later on Radio 4 Extra).
** In the broadcast series, still set in 1948, Hodges approaches Pike, now 22 years old, with a proposal to renovate the near derelict pier, costing £5,000, at Frambourne. To finance this plan Pike has to approach Wilson for a loan. Wilson is {{blackmail}}ed by Pike (who is no longer the young innocent of the series) over past indiscretions with a woman named Smith and Wilson suspects the only reason Hodges approached Pike was to get to the bank's money through him. Nevertheless, Pike and Wilson put aside their wartime quarrel with Hodges - more or less - and the renovation begins. Following Creator/JohnLeMesurier's death, it was retooled ''again'' for TV with original characters as ''High & Dry'', which ran for a single seven-episode series on Creator/{{ITV}} in 1987.
* The various ''AudioPlay/BigFinishDoctorWho'' {{Audio Adaptation}}s and ''Franchise/DoctorWhoExpandedUniverse'' books spun off from ''Series/DoctorWho'' between 1989-2005 when (other than the BackdoorPilot MadeForTVMovie, simply called ''Recap/{{Doctor Who|TVMTheTVMovie}}'') there was no new ''Who'' airing.
** Several entries in the Expanded Universe are direct sequels to TV episodes. In particular, the SequelHook in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS14E1TheMasqueOfMandragora The Masque of Mandragora]]" was taken up by other media on ''four'' occasions (a ''Magazine/DoctorWhoMagazine'' comic strip, a AudioPlay/SarahJaneSmith audio drama season arc, a Literature/PastDoctorAdventures novel and a Literature/NewSeriesAdventures novel) with the last one taking the time to reference the other three.
* ''Series/TheXFiles'' started off a TV series with a couple of [[Film/TheXFilesFightTheFuture live-action]] [[Film/TheXFilesIWantToBelieve movies]], and got a 10th season comic in 2013 and an 11th in 2015 which continue Mulder and Scully's adventures. Ironically after the comics ended, the show was revived by Creator/{{Fox}} the following year and likewise got a 10 and 11th season, which ended up knocking the comic seasons out of canon (though some fans like to view them as an AlternateContinuity).
* ''Franchise/StarTrek'':
** Many comics by Creator/GoldKeyComics and Creator/DCComics, which were published between the end of [[Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries the original series]] and ''Film/StarTrekTheMotionPicture''.
** ''WesternAnimation/StarTrekTheAnimatedSeries'' was a short-lived continuation of the original series, created by Creator/{{Filmation}}.
** ''Film/StarTrekTheMotionPicture'' started a series of movies based on the original series.
** There have been hundreds of novels that take place after final episodes of the various ''Franchise/StarTrek'' series, notably the "Relaunch" lines of ''Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine'', ''Series/StarTrekVoyager'', and ''Series/StarTrekEnterprise''.
** The ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' episode "[[Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS1E24Conspiracy Conspiracy]]" debuted an alien infiltration by {{Puppeteer Parasite}}s that was meant to create a recurring villain. However, the bluegills were dropped after this appearance due to the expense of the special effects needed; the Borg ended up taking their role. The ''Literature/StarTrekNovelverse'', ''VideoGame/StarTrekOnline'', and the ''TabletopGame/StarTrekAdventures'' tutorial campaign ''A Star Beyond the Stars'' all picked up the bluegill storyline in various ways--and oddly all three of them made some connection between the bluegills and the Trill.
* Four years after ''Series/{{Charmed|1998}}'' ended, Zenescope Entertainment started publishing a monthly comicbook series set eighteen months after the events of the final episode.
* After ''Series/StargateAtlantis'' was cancelled rather suddenly a continuation novel series was started. It's even considered canon.
* ''Series/TheThirdDay'': While the first and last instalments of the MiniSeries - "Summer" and "Winter" - are both pre-filmed TV series while the middle episode is a live semi improvised theatre play that was live-streamed in real time on Website/{{Facebook}} and Sky.
* ''Series/{{Smallville}}'' has a comic book series that serves as the canonical season 11, covering Clark fully embracing his Superman persona.
* ''Series/ThePrisoner1967'' had a comic book sequel called ''Shattered Visage'', which was controversial among fans due to its simultaneous attempts to do a MindScrewdriver and a HappyEndingOverride on the TV show's final episode.
* Multiple stories of the ExpandedUniverse books of ''Series/Space1999'' continued the story of the series between the last televised episode and the DistantFinale[=/=]WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue featurette "Message From Moonbase Alpha".
* Creator/IDWPublishing has published "Season 3" and "Season 4" of ''Series/Jericho2006'', as well as continuation comic books for ''Series/TheXFiles'' and ''Series/Millennium1996''.
* ''Series/PennyDreadful'' has a comic book series produced by Titan Comics that continues after the events of the third season.
* A ''Series/FatherTed'' stage musical has been announced that will be set after the series ended with Ted somehow becoming pope.
* ''Film/KaamelottPremierVolet'' is TheMovie of ''Series/{{Kaamelott}}'', and a DistantSequel to it.
* ''Series/SexAndTheCity'' was followed by [[Film/SexAndTheCity a duology]] which serves as the sequel of the series.
* ''Series/TheSopranos'' got a prequel film ''Film/TheManySaintsOfNewark''.
* As noted above in Film, the main storyline from the Creator/DisneyPlus series ''Series/WandaVision'' continues in ''Film/DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness''. Appropriately enough, ''Multiverse of Madness'' further explores the idea of TheMultiverse from ''Series/{{Loki|2021}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/WhatIf2021''.
* ''Series/DenkouChoujinGridman'' has two animated sequels, both by Creator/StudioTrigger: ''boys invent great hero'', a short made for the Anime/JapanAnimatorExpo which ends with the return of one of the main characters, and TRIGGER's ''Gridman Universe'' franchise, which takes place later in the series timeline.
* Various ''Franchise/KamenRider'' projects tend to receive novels after ending, and most of those are continuations. The canonicity of those vary, some offer no conflict as follow-ups (like ''[[Film/ShinKamenRiderPrologue Shin]]''), others are contradicted by following appearances of the characters (like ''[[Series/KamenRiderBlade Blade]]''). The only continuation that seems certainly canon is the ''Series/KamenRiderGhost'' one, [[spoiler:as the series finale features Takeru's son from the novel, and the post-series ''RE:BIRTH: Kamen Rider Specter'' movie also debuts Chloe, who the novel stablished as Takeru's future wife and he seemed to have some slight infatuation with her since the moment they met]].
** ''Series/KamenRiderDouble'' received a manga sequel named ''Manga/FuutoPI'', still written by Creator/RikuSanjo. It received a TwelveEpisodeAnime adaptation in 2022 covering the first few story arcs.
* ''Series/UltramanTowardsTheFuture'', a short entry in the ''Franchise/UltraSeries'' with only 13 episodes, managed to get a five-issue comic book sequel from Nemesis Comics. Said sequel is DarkerAndEdgier than the show itself, with plots ranging from Earth nearly destroyed in a RobotWar to the villain Gudis returning in a stronger, borderline indestructible form and a human villain who sells his soul to Gudis and help the alien TakeOverTheWorld.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Radio]]
* ''ComicBook/WorldsFinest1941'' Issue #271 is simultaneously a RecursiveAdaptation and a sequel to a few episodes of the 1940's ''Radio/TheAdventuresOfSuperman'', namely the ones dealing with Zoltan (in which Batman and Robin first appeared in the show) and Atoman (who is the villain of this story).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/{{Cyberpunk}}'' were made as book games that jumpstarted the CyberPunk genre to the mainstream media, while two of their sequels, ''The Arasaka's Plot'' (a 2007 mobile game), and ''VideoGame/Cyberpunk2077'', are video game sequels, with the latter being a DistantSequel. And there's ''Anime/CyberpunkEdgerunners'', a side story anime set as a prequel to ''2077''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* The Titan Comics-published ''VideoGame/AssassinsCreedOrigins'' four-part comic mini-series details the fall of Cleopatra 14 years after the game.
* ''VideoGame/{{Crysis}} 2'' is the sequel but set at an altogether different time and place with a (mostly) new cast of characters. The events of ''Crysis'' and ''Crysis: Warhead'' were more directly continued in a six-issue comic book series endorsed by EA and published by IDW intending to fill the gap.
* The Hope's Peak Saga of ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'' (most of which consisted of visual novels and video games) had four: ''Literature/DanganronpaZero'', a novel set before the first and second games and the only novel in the saga to be directly related to the plot, ''Anime/Danganronpa3'', an anime which served as the conclusion chapter, ''Manga/KillerKiller'', a manga taking place just before the events of ''Danganronpa 3'', and ''Nagito Komaeda and the World Destroyer'', an OVA set some time after the end of ''VisualNovel/{{Danganronpa 2|GoodbyeDespair}}''. [[VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony The third cardinal game]] tells a completely separate story.
* ''VideoGame/FirstEncounterAssaultRecon'' had two prequels in other mediums. The "Alma Interviews" was a live-action short movie depicting an interview with a young Alma before she really started on the spooky business from the game, while the "Director's Edition" of the game also came with a Creator/{{Dark Horse|Comics}}-drawn adaptation of the beginning of Fettel's rampage from the game's opening cinematic.
* ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'':
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyV'' had the OVA sequel ''Anime/FinalFantasyLegendOfTheCrystals''.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' received a direct sequel in the form of an animated film, ''Anime/FinalFantasyVIIAdventChildren'', not to mention the various sequels and prequels, one of which was an anime short titled ''Before Crisis''.
*** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIIRemake'' has an {{interquel}} novel, ''Literature/FinalFantasyVIIRemakeTraceOfTwoPasts''.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' has an audio drama CD, -Will-, acting as a sequel to ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2'', which many fans consider non-canon due to the hatred it has amassed ([[DownerEnding its ending]], most of all, due to it [[spoiler:bringing Sin BackFromTheDead, making Yuna's quest to kill it permanently [[AllForNothing completely pointless]]]]). Since ''Final Fantasy X-3'' is in DevelopmentHell, the audio drama CD can be considered WhatCouldHaveBeen.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV'' has its prequel movie, ''Anime/KingsglaiveFinalFantasyXV''.
*** It also had what was supposed to be the GrandFinale of the story, the ''Dawn of the Future'' [=DLC=]s, collected into a novel that told WhatCouldHaveBeen the stories of those [=DLC=]s.
* Invoked by Twinbeard when they announced a sequel to ''VideoGame/FrogFractions'', as they claimed they would make it such a StealthSequel that it might not even be a video game at all. Two years later, and it would turn out the sequel was [[spoiler:the ARG used to find it]].
* ''VideoGame/TheGladiator'', a Taiwanese BeatEmUp with a {{wuxia}} setting, has a series of novels that continues the events of the game.
* ''VideoGame/InFamous'': A {{midquel}} example, the comic is set in between the first and [[VideoGame/Infamous2 second game]] and covers the plot points that the first game LeftHanging. Namely what happened with Alden, Moya and Sasha.
* ''VideoGame/InjusticeGodsAmongUs'' has a prequel set 5 years before ComicBook/{{Superman}}'s regime, in [[ComicBook/InjusticeGodsAmongUs comic book form]].
** ''VideoGame/Injustice2'' also has a [[ComicBook/Injustice2 prequel comic]].
** ''ComicBook/InjusticeVsMastersOfTheUniverse'' takes place after ''Injustice 2'', more specifically [[spoiler:the Absolute Power route of the final battle.]]
* ''Anime/KemonoFriends'' was a bit weird about this. While it started out as a mobile game before getting an anime, for most of the story the anime went on as if it was an AlternateContinuity. However, after a certain point it gets revealed that the anime was actually a {{Stealth|Sequel}} DistantSequel, albeit one that's vague about exactly how much time has passed between the two. This wound up being done again several years later, where the anime got a new mobile/arcade game called ''Kemono Friends 3'', set after the second anime season.
* ''VideoGame/KillerInstinct2013'' received a six-issue sequel miniseries by Creator/DynamiteComics taking place after the game's ''Shadow Lords'' campaign, detailing the aftermath of Gargos' invasion of Earth and the looming threat of the vampiric Coven.
* ''VideoGame/LifeIsStrange'' has a [[ComicBook/LifeIsStrange comic continuation]] taking place after one of the two possible endings, in particular [[spoiler:the one where Max saves Chloe and let the storm destroy Arcadia Bay]]. They go on with their lives, least until Max's time rewinding power suddenly starts acting up, to which they must find out why.
* ''VideoGame/LittleTailBronx'' had to resort to using short stories as a means of expanding on the stories started in the main games due to lack of financial success combined with Bandai Namco's partial ownership interfering with Creator/CyberConnect2's desires to make more games in the franchise. Unfortunately, none of them have official translations.
** ''VideoGame/TailConcerto'' has "After That Concerto" that acts as a WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue to the main cast.
** ''VideoGame/SolatoroboRedTheHunter'' has a bunch of these, with the prequels "Ragdoll Elegy", "9071 Morning Sacrifice", "A Captain's Final Adventure", "Bitter Rain", "Overture - Movement 0", "Shepherd Report", and most famously "Red Data Children". Sequels include "Warm Memories", "Forest of Healing", "Hospitality At Nippon", "Black and White Borderline", and, crossing over with ''Tail Concerto'', "Onward - Bon Voyage!" and "Kadenz -Closing Melody-". There are also three [[CanonDiscontinuity non-canon]] stories "From Now, An Important Time To Live", "Double-Edge Sword", and [[HighSchoolAU "Summer at Shepherd Academy"]].
* The Platform/PlayStation4 [[VideoGameRemake remake]] of ''VideoGame/MediEvil'' released alongside a comic tie-in that acts as a sequel to ''VideoGame/MediEvil2'', and uses plot elements from what would have been the third game in the series, ''[=MediEvil=]: Fate's Arrow''.
* ''VideoGame/MegaManMaverickHunterX'', the PSP remake of ''VideoGame/MegaManX1'' features an OVA prequel called "Day of Sigma", revealing when Sigma became the BigBad and giving him a motivation in-line with what it had evolved into by the time of ''VideoGame/MegaManX8''.
* ''VideoGame/MeltyBlood'' got a sequel through the manga ''Back Alley Nightmare'', which also added ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'' to the list of Franchise/{{Nasuverse}} crossovers in the game.
* The VisualNovel ''Memory's Dogma Code:01'' got a light novel adaptation as well as two light novel sequels; ''Memory's Dogma Code:02'', which follows Akane Kokonoe, and ''Memory's Dogma Code:03'', which follows Ema.
* ''VideoGame/{{Nefarious}}'' was originally a standalone 2D platformer released in 2017, but it received a follow-up as [[WebComic/{{Nefarious}} an ongoing webcomic]]. This was pretty clearly done in response to the property's own strengths: [[EnjoyTheStorySkipTheGame the game was considered pretty mediocre and finicky, but it managed to be carried by its premise and charm]], with enough room to expand its ExcusePlot beyond gameplay.
* Although it wasn't as apparent when it released, ''VideoGame/NieR'' had a sequel in the stage play ''Theatre/YoRHa'', which told of a robot war in the setting's distant future and the androids that fought it. When ''VideoGame/NierAutomata'' eventually elaborated on these plot points, ''[=YoRHa=]'' was expanded and converted into a series of side story plays.
** ''[=NieR=]'' also got a companion sidebook/strategy guide, ''Grimoire [=NieR=]'', which included several side-stories set before, during, and after the game. Most notably is "The Lost World", which [[spoiler:continues on from the game's Ending D to encompass an "Ending E" that was later made the canon ending, leading into ''Automata'' and [[RecursiveAdaptation made a playable ending]] in the ''ver.1.22474487139...'' remaster]].
* ''Anime/PhantasyStarOnline2TheAnimation'' is an anime interquel to ''VideoGame/PhantasyStarOnline2'', set between the events of ''EPISODE 3'' and ''EPISODE 4'' and starring a mostly original cast and story. Very little of its plot has any actual bearing on the game's story, but it is used to explain the absence of a certain character early in ''EPISODE 4'' and its characters are featured in some cutscenes.
* ''Film/RedFactionOrigins'' is a Creator/{{Syfy}} film interquel between two games in the ''VideoGame/RedFaction'' series, namely, ''Guerilla'' and ''Armageddon''.
* ''VideoGame/SakuraWars'':
** The ''Le Nouveau Paris'' OVA as well as ''Anime/SakuraWarsTheMovie'' both continue from where ''VideoGame/SakuraWars3IsParisBurning'' left off.
** The ''Sakura Wars: New York'' OVA is a direct sequel to ''VideoGame/SakuraWarsSoLongMyLove''.
** ''Anime/SakuraWarsTheAnimation'' takes place a year after ''VideoGame/SakuraWars2019''.
* Of the various chapters planned to tell the story of ''VideoGame/{{Shenmue}}'', the second would take place during Ryo's boat trip from Yokosuka to Hong Kong, depicting events on board the boat as well as elsewhere during that same time. However, the first game's story ends with Ryo's departure from Yokosuka, and the direct sequel ''VideoGame/ShenmueII'' begins with Ryo's arrival in Hong Kong. The events of Chapter 2 would eventually be depicted in ''Shenmue Side Story'', a series of comics that could be viewed as a reward for the Secret Snapshot sidequest in the Xbox and HD Remaster versions of ''Shenmue II'', and show things like the origin of Joy and Guizhang's relationship and why Jiangyu Ding and her daughter Xiaomei, who can later be met in Wan Chai, act grateful towards Ryo at the beginning of the game.
* ''[[VideoGame/SiN1998 SiN]]'' was originally followed by [[Anime/SiNTheMovie a 2000 anime movie]] in which Blade's partner died and was replaced by his sister, though this movie was later rendered non-canon when [[VideoGame/SiNEpisodesEmergence a sequel game]] came out in 2006.
* The [[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogIDW IDW comic]] of ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'', while likewise being a ContinuityReboot following the cancellation of the [[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics Archie version]], acts as a follow up of ''VideoGame/SonicForces'', covering the aftermath of that game and what happened to Eggman after he was defeated before veering off into the usual good vs evil business. [[spoiler: But not Infinite, oddly enough, whom in the game just vanished after Sonic and the Rookie beat him. This was due to a mandate by Sega that the writers weren't allowed to cover his fate, apparently wanting to do this themselves for a future game.]]
* ''ComicBook/ClementineLives'' is a sequel to [[VideoGame/TheWalkingDeadSeasonFour Season 4]] of ''[[VideoGame/TheWalkingDeadTelltale Telltale's The Walking Dead]]'' wherein Clementine leaves AJ and Ericson's behind to seek a new adventure by herself, leading into the ''Clementine'' series where she encounters new friends, romantic interests, and enemies.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''Literature/EpithetErasedPrisonOfPlastic'' is the first of a planned series of audiobooks/novels meant to continue the plot of the web series ''WebAnimation/EpithetErased''. ''Prison of Plastic'' in particular picks up from the show's [[TheStinger final scene]], wherein Molly and her friends discover a man washed up on a beach.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* ''Literature/TheHomestuckEpilogues'' is a novel continuation of the webcomic ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'', telling two different versions of what might have happened to the characters after the original comic ended. Notably, the Epilogues repeatedly call their own canonicity as the "true ending" of ''Homestuck'' into question, and they make very clear that the [[BrokenBase controversial]] original ending is intended to stand on its own. The Epilogues themselves would get [[Webcomic/HomestuckBeyondCanon a sequel]] in the ''original'' medium three years later.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'':
** ''[[ComicBook/AdventureTimeSeason11 Season 11]]'': A "proposed" season set after the series finale, despite the title, it didn't actually cover any new ground and was cancelled after six issues. WordOfGod states they're non-canon, anyway, with the animated miniseries ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTimeDistantLands'' serving as the true continuation.
** ''[[ComicBook/AdventureTimeMarcyAndSimon Marcy & Simon]]'': A spin-off that covers Simon, aka the former Ice King, suddenly regressing and Marcy's quest to help him [[spoiler:culminating in trying rescue Betty who took on the GOLB form in the series finale to save everyone. Like the above example, this one is also non-canon with Simon and Betty's arc instead concluding in ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTimeFionnaAndCake''.]]
* ''Franchise/AvatarTheLastAirbender'':
** ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' has had several comic books following the end of the show, which run the gamut of exploring plot threads the series left hanging to laying down the foundation for various plot and setting elements present in ''The Legend of Korra''. There are also a number of comics that serve as interquels to the show's events.
** ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'': Following in its predecessor's footsteps, the comics explore the aftermath of the show's fourth season. The first two graphic novels in particular covered the issue of the new spirit portal in the middle of Republic City and the remnants of the Earth Nation army still making a bid for power in Kuvira's absence.
* ''WesternAnimation/Ben10GeneratorRexHeroesUnited'' had a SequelHook teased at the end, but the special never got a follow-up in animated form. However, a sequel story was written for issue 65 of the ''ComicBook/CartoonNetworkActionPack'' comic, though it didn't follow up on the teased hooks.
* ''WesternAnimation/ChipNDaleRescueRangers'' got one in 2010 in the form of a comic series that continues where the series left off, where the Rangers regroup once more. Lasted for only for eight issues due to Disney revoking Boom's license after gaining Marvel.
* ''WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck'': The show got a comic book continuation from Creator/KaboomComics in 2010, set a year after the TV series and which had Drake take up the Darkwing persona once more. The series ended after eighteen issues, when Disney revoked Boom's license due to now having Marvel under their belt. The comic would be briefly revived in 2016, ignoring the Boom run's final story arc [[ScrewedByTheLawyers for legal reasons]], before being cancelled after eight issues.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheDragonPrince'' has a comic book called ''ComicBook/ThroughTheMoon'', which takes place after season three.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'':
** The series got three live-action movies set after the main series in the form of ''Film/AFairlyOddMovieGrowUpTimmyTurner'', ''Film/AFairlyOddChristmas'', and ''Film/AFairlyOddSummer''. Considering how wonky their inclusion would be in the TV series (especially in later seasons), they're pretty much considered an AlternateContinuity by fans.
** The show would later get a live-action TV series sequel in the form of ''Series/TheFairlyOddParentsFairlyOdder'', which has Timmy [[PassingTheTorch personally grant his younger cousin his fairies]] as he gets ready to head off to college.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'' has undergone this twice.
** The Creator/SlaveLaborGraphics run in the mid-2000s that acted as a third season, {{retcon}}ning the show's original third season, ''The Goliath Chronicles''. It even got a spin-off, ''ComicBook/GargoylesBadGuys'', which as the title states, focuses on the villains of the series. The comics ended up being cancelled when Disney increased their licensing fees, which prompted the publisher to drop the series.
** The Creator/DynamiteComics run in the 2020s that acts as a fourth season, following from the former's events.
* ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'' received a single volume dubbed ''[[ComicBook/GravityFallsLostLegends Lost Legends]]'' written by the show's creator that, in addition to covering stories taking place during the events of the show and even before it, also has a few set in-between when Bill was defeated and Dipper and Mabel leaving for home.
* ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'': The [[ComicBook/InvaderZimOni comic]] continues on where Season 2 left off, mostly consisting of self-contained adventures benefitting of the original show's NegativeContinuity nature, though a few overarching plot points things did stick. [[RetCanon Elements of the comics also showed up]] in the TV movie, ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZimEnterTheFlorpus''.
* ''WesternAnimation/LegionOfSuperHeroes'' had its own tie-in comic series, ''Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century'', which kept going after the show's end and had some stories taking place after it.
* ''WesternAnimation/MegaManFullyCharged'' has a six-issue [[ComicBook/MegaManFullyCharged comic book mini-series]] that takes place after the first season's ending. It is written by the show's writers and introduces story ideas originally planned for the second season before its cancellation. It also has a notably DarkerAndEdgier tone compared to the series it is based on.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'': The [[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDW tie-in comic book series]] labeled its final fourteen issues as "Season 10", though like the rest of the comic book run, [[SchrodingersCanon the level of continuity they hold is nebulous]].
* ''WesternAnimation/OverTheGardenWall'' has a number of tie-in comics by Creator/KaboomComics, some of which are set after the show's end.
* ''WesternAnimation/ReBoot'' was cancelled (for good) after a Season 4 cliffhanger, but the story continued years later in an official webcomic format hosted by Rainmaker Entertainment, ''Webcomic/ReBootCodeOfHonor''.
* ''WesternAnimation/RegularShow'' received a six-issue miniseries called ''[[ComicBook/RegularShow25YearsLater 25 Years Later]]'' in which a now older Mordecai and Rigby get into a situation where their kids are taken from them by a magical imp and their quest to get them back.
* ''WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack'':
** From 2013 to 2015, a comic book series was made which continued Jack's adventures and concluded with Jack and his allies preparing to confront Aku in one final battle. The show would get [[SamuraiJack/TropesSeason5 an actual fifth season]] shortly after, but there are fans who still view the comics as being canon, squeezing them into the 50-year TimeSkip between seasons four and five.
** Said fifth season’s finale received a canonical interquel, ''VideoGame/SamuraiJackBattleThroughTime'', a video game depicting an adventure set between Jack and Ashi [[spoiler:jumping through Ashi’s portal to the past to actually arriving in the past]]. The game’s GoldenEnding goes on to [[spoiler:retcon the show's ending, showing Ashi surviving and getting to live happily ever after with Jack in the past]].
* In terms of {{sequel episode}}s, "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS8E24TheSimpsonsSpinOffShowcase The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase]]" from ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' had a sequel in [[ComicBook/TheSimpsons the comic series]], dubbed the "Quickly Cancelled Comic Book Cavalcade". The stories are continuations of the three spinoffs proposed in the original episode, and true to form, they are [[StylisticSuck as hokey as ever]]. In the "Wiggum, P.I." story, Wiggum becomes undead and Skinner suspects Big Daddy is behind it. Meanwhile, the eponymous "Lovematic Grandpa" finds his soul switched with that of Moe's GirlOfTheWeek. Finally, "The Simpson Family Smile-Time Variety Hour" is forced to hold their salute to RockAndRoll on an island due to Homer crashing their plane on the way to their gig in Hollywood.
* ''WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM'': This one is a more complicated example. The [[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics comic book]] came first before the TV series but was more light-hearted against the darker themes of the TV show. After the TV series ended, the comic ended up taking on the more mature theme of the TV series as well as using some of the plotlines that were intended for the show's proposed third season. Thus some fans consider the comic a continuation of the TV series.
* Prior to the show being UnCanceled, ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'' had some of its unmade story arcs adapted into other mediums; the comic book miniseries ''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' and the novel ''Literature/DarkDisciple'' were made in a time when it seemed all but certain the show was dead.
* The ''Franchise/TalesOfArcadia'' franchise started with 3 series, ''WesternAnimation/{{Trollhunters}}'', ''WesternAnimation/ThreeBelow'' and ''WesternAnimation/Wizards2020'', before getting a movie, ''WesternAnimation/TrollhuntersRiseOfTheTitans''.
* ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'' had a tie-in comic, ''ComicBook/TeenTitansGo'' (not to be confused with [[WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo the 2013 show of the same name]], or the comic based on ''that'' show), which ran alongside it. The comic continued after the show ended and told stories taking place after the series finale, which included addressing the show's AmbiguousEnding, and introduced several characters they either couldn't use or had no time to cover (like Ravager, Wildfire, and Donna Troy and Cassie Sandsmark).
* ''WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles1987'' got one in the form of the video game adaptation/Creator/{{Konami}} game homage ''VideoGame/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtlesShreddersRevenge''. It's ostensibly set up as a BroadStrokes take on the cartoon, but several elements make it clear that it's a continuation, mainly the fact that [[spoiler:the Technodrome is in ruins and one key plot point concerns the villains reassembling Krang's body, which was previously used to defeat Lord Dregg]].
* Before the release of ''[[WesternAnimation/YoungJusticeRevivalSeries Young Justice Outsiders]]'', DC released a two-issue digital comic book that took place between the previous season and ''Outsiders'', written by series showrunner Creator/GregWeisman. During the DC Fandome virtual event, a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXD8fdM6tac audio play]] called "The Prize" premiered that Weisman also wrote and was performed by the show's voice cast. It canonically takes place between ''Outsiders'' and ''Phantoms''.
** The show's original comic book tie-in, also written by Weisman and staff writer Kevin Hopps, also told many canonical stories that were interquels to various episodes. Every story arc but the last one took place around season one, while the final story arc took place exactly one month before the start of ''Invasion''.
