A picture is worth a thousand words, and some SpeechBubbles do, in fact, contain just this: a picture.

Pictorial Speech Bubbles are generally used in two ways. First, to show the general gist of what the character is saying, without focusing on what their exact words are. Second, to represent the character's general mood, attitude or thoughts, even when he isn't specifically saying anything. It's not always easy to tell the two variations apart. In video games, they're often used to [[OverheadInteractionIndicator show what action a character's doing]] when their animation isn't clear on it.

RebusBubble, and SymbolSwearing are subtropes. SayItWithHearts would also happen, if an example had a HeartSymbol in it, or was just consisting of them. Compare also SpeakingInPanels. If letters are substituted with similarly-shaped images, it's PictorialLetterSubstitution.

%%* ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'': [[http://hetalia.livejournal.com/12663675.html Davie]].
* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'': It's a common occurrence in [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureSteelBallRun Part 7]] to have images peppered in character's speech bubbles, but the trope is played completely straight in one panel where Gyro speaks and says nothing other an image of Diego Brando's head.
* The second ''Manga/LupinIII'' manga series does this a few times with the Mars (♂) and Venus (♀)symbols during discussions of sex.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/AdventureTime'': In issue 15, Magic Man curses Finn and Jake with being only able to use random pictures to communicate.
* Gag comics such as ''ComicBook/MortadeloYFilemon'' commonly have pictures in speech bubbles whenever a character is supposed to curse; for example, in the speech bubble there would be a pig with the face of another person if the character was angry and shouting at him, or just the picture of a turd when someone was supposed to say "shit!".
* The ''Comicbook/{{Asterix}}'' comic books have a lot of fun with speech bubbles. For instance, different languages are represented by different typefaces. Egyptians speak in hieroglyphics which are usually self-explanatory (e.g. a foot kicking a butt). When Obelix attempts to speak Egyptian, his speech bubble contains a crude stick figure.
* ''ComicBook/{{Marsupilami}}'' comics occasionally use this, since not all characters speak the same (or any) language.
** In one comic, a white hunter and an indigenous Palombian discuss why they want to capture a marsupilami. The hunter's speech bubble shows him receiving an award near a caged marsupilami, while the native's bubble shows the tribe celebrating him while roast marsupilami is being served.
** In another comic, a pilot accidentally throws his boot in a native's face. The native's speech bubble shows a pig wearing the pilot's signature hat. This is followed by a bubble in which the pig is stuck full of knives, spears and arrows as the native advances on the pilot.
* In ''ComicBook/Meta4'' by Ted [=McKeever=], this is how Gasolina talks. It's actually the font Dingbats, but the effect is the same.
* In [[PolishMedia Polish comic book]] series ''ComicBook/LilIPut'', the language of the [[OurFairiesAreDifferent fairies]] sounds like ringing of a bell, which is represented by drawings of ringing bells in their speechbubbles. As the stories progress, [[HurricaneOfPuns plenty of different variation]] occur on their speechbubbles such as fairy [[VisualPun welcoming a person has a picture of doorbell ringing, fairy calling for help has a picture of a fire-alarm, fairy yelling loudly has a bell tower]] to name just few.
* A two page Fozzie Bear solo story in ''Comicbook/TheMuppetShowComicBook'' has this as a gimmick. Fozzie's jokes are represented by a picture of a chicken crossing the road and a picture of a dog with no nose. Then Statler and Waldorf shout out a picture of a trash can. Fozzie repeats this with a question mark, and the hecklers respond with the trash can sitting on a block of ice with VisibleOdor. And so on.
* ''ComicBook/UsagiYojimbo'' frequently has characters getting killed (or [[PeekabooCorpse suddenly revealed to be dead]]) emitting a word balloon with a picture of their species's skull.
* ''ComicBook/{{Norby}}'': In panel seven of chapter nine of the ''Literature/NorbyTheMixedUpRobot'' adaptation, Fargo has a red question mark inside his speech bubble as the other protagonists move over to touch him.
* In the ''ComicBook/XMen'' comic books, mutant Artie does not speak a word, but can project his thoughts in the form of images as substitute (for the word balloons). This is seen more clearly, for example, in ''X-Men Unlimited'' #14 (1997) and ''Generation X'' (1994).
* Done many times in ComicBook/{{Dollicious}}, usualy with characters in the bubbles being drawn in more simplified, Kawaii-like sytyle and played for over the top comedy. In one story Pho ask Birthday Cake to explain her magic trick and she do it one banel of her dialog being replace by mini-Birthday Cake doing the trick step by step. Few mute stories are done 100% in this style, which leads to some great comical moments such as Spaghetti going on a rant how could Ramen left Gnocchi with Tagliatelle and calling Ramen "brainless" by a cute picture of smiling Ramen whos brain flies of her head.

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/ANNOMutationem'': One occurs during the epilogue when Ann and Ayane reunite with them having Pictorial Speech Bubbles while discussing what they'll do once returning back home.
* WebGame ''VideoGame/ButThatWasYesterday''. All of the characters who communicate in the game use this technique. For example, when someone wants to tell another character to "get up" or "jump", their speech bubble holds an up arrow.
* Everyone in VideoGame/{{Dropsy}} speaks this way; sometimes part of the challenge is figuring out what exactly they mean by it.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Dubloon}}'', when [[HeroicMime Russel]] saves [[TeamPet Ricky]] without saving his owner Riley first, Ricky will ask where Riley is with a speech bubble depicting his head, to which Russel replies with speech bubble showing a shaking head.
* ''VideoGame/EpicBattleFantasy'': In the third game, one of Natalie's possible victory animations has her saying a HeartSymbol.
* Characters in the ''VideoGame/GoldenSun'' series can "say" emotes, sweatdrops, CrossPoppingVeins when angry...
* ''VideoGame/HeroAndDaughter'': Multiple uses:
** A sweatdrop one is used by the King, when he's exasperated, in the intro cutscene.
** When Lara's summoned, her first action is to have a HeartSymbol in this trope.
* In ''[[VideoGame/{{Jumper}} Jumper Three]]'', Ogmo and the planet's natives communicate with each other using speech bubbles with pictures in them.
* The Prehistoric chapter of ''VideoGame/LiveALive'' has everyone talk this way, since spoken language doesn't exist yet.
* ''VideoGame/TheMaidOfFairewellHeights'': A HeartSymbol one, when in the Alice Shop, Marshmallow says:
--> I have the power to have my way with my beloved darling, I can do ANYTHING I want with him! ?
* ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'': When the Bros. crash-land in Oho Oasis, Luigi calls Mario's name while looking for him, accompanied by a speech bubble with Mario's sprite in it.
* ''VideoGame/OracleOfAskigaga'': The first guard that's possible to talk to, has one with a {{Sweatdrop}}, before describing EverythingExceptMostThings:
--> '''Guard:''' Nothing to report, General!\
[{{Sweatdrop}} speech bubble]\
Well, except for the thief that tried to get by. And her accomplice that tried to distract us by being some merchant trying to sell... whatever.\
Oh yeah, there was that gal that was dressed as a maid, but there totally wasn't any maid-shifts scheduled for a while! Other than that, nothing to report!\
'''Oharu:''' You call '''that''' "nothing"?\
'''Hiroji:''' They are not matters that should concern a person of your position. I believe that's all she meant.\
'''Oharu:''' I suppose there is that point, but...\
'''Hiroji:''' Then don't concern yourself with it!
* ''VideoGame/PokemonCrystal'': Misty says "♡" when you see her on her date at Cerulean Cape, in a combination with SayItWithHearts.
* In ''VideoGame/PotionPermit'', a character's facial expression is shown as an emoticon in a speech bubble, a chicken drumstick is used to represent hunger, and a FrustratedOverheadScribble is used whenever someone's upset.
* ''VideoGame/PrayerOfTheFaithless'': In Aeyr's first conversation, with [[MyNameIsQuestionMarks ???]]:
** When Aeyr walks up to him to talk, Aeyr has speech bubble above his head with [[MusicIsEighthNotes a pair of eighth notes sharing a flag. Presumably that means he was whistling a tune]].
** When Aeyr ends the conversation, he has a speech bubble of a FrustratedOverheadScribble, expressing his irritation with ??? just responding to everything with VisibleSilence.
* ''VideoGame/RemnantsOfIsolation'': Melchior says a SweatDrop after fighting a battle on the spur of land that houses the second lever of the forested area. Then, with his head down, he says:
--> I... Oh man. Fighting on my own is rough!\
I need to get back to Celesta as soon as possible.
* ''VideoGame/TheSims'' talk in these as otherwise they would be incomprehensible as they are SpeakingSimlish. For example, a [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sims-fire_8074.png picture of fire]] for fire.
* ''VideoGame/SuperAnimalRoyale'' has a factory staffed by crabs. [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext No, don't bother to ask why.]] The important thing is that these same crabs also litter the island's beaches and, if you dance next to them, will do the Crab Rave dance with accompanying [[SuspiciouslySimilarSong music]]. Try that here, though, and they'll just grumble at you with a speech bubble containing either a frustrated scribble or [[CantYouReadTheSign a picture of the "no dancing sign" you're ignoring]].
* ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'': {{Sweatdrop}} ones are used when Genis and Lloyd are embarrassed about Colette accidentally breaking a wall.
* In ''VideoGame/ThemePark'', kids have this kind of bubbles hovering over their heads to show how they feel about your park or what is bothering them.
* ''VideoGame/ThemsFightinHerds'': Paprika (who most of the time [[TheUnintelligible can't be understood by the other characters]] spoke with a pictogram of a bottle of paprika to tell Arizona her name. Somehow, Arizona understood this.
* ''VideoGame/AVeryLongRopeToTheTopOfTheSky'': If you agree to participate in an arena, the person you talk to for that says "♡", in a combination with SayItWithHearts.
* ''VideoGame/Zone66'': The opening cinematic conveys the idea of main character possessing a wife and a child through a thought bubble image where she breastfeeds an infant.

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* Munchie speaks using images in ''Webcomic/CharbyTheVampirate'' though only a few can understand him, Menu is among those who can as seen [[http://www.charbythevampirate.com/comic/53 here.]]
* In ''Webcomic/GirlGenius'', [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20070718 Bangladesh DuPree gets a few of these]] while her jaw is broken and wired shut.
** In the page image, for example, she asks "Am I allowed to stab, shoot, or axe anyone into swiss cheese?"
* ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'':
** In [[http://www.egscomics.com/sketchbook/?date=2012-08-24 this]] sketchbook strip, Susan and Sarah speak using these.
** Nanase has a HeartSymbol one in the [[http://www.egscomics.com/egsnp/gam-06 sixth strip of EGS:NP Grace-A-Monsters!]]
** Ellen and Grace in [[http://egscomics.com/comic/2008-04-30 a fantasy sequence]] in "The Trials of Susan".
** Lampshaded and discussed in this [[https://www.egscomics.com/egsnp/wao1-009 newspaper strip]], where George uses the method to show how easy it is to understand, whilst similtaineously confusing the other characters with him.
* ''Webcomic/TheLittleTrashmaid'': When characters speak it’s generally shown in this way, since [[LanguageBarrier Tidy doesn’t understand English, or perhaps human languages in general]].
* ''Webcomic/LoveUnlimited2022'': In the ''Ms. Marvel & Red Dagger'' arc, whenever Kamala's not listening to her parents, their speech bubbles are drawn as unreadable scribbles rather than text.
* ''Webcomic/RoguesOfClwydRhan'' have sometimes bubbles still containing some text, but with added pictures framing it for the mood. For example, an extremely old witch has speech bubbles with frayed borders and spiderwebs in it. In another case, a diplomat has a voice so icy it is [[http://rocr.net/index.php?p=20000822 framed in ice with stalactites underneath, and a polar bear, penguin and igloo on top]].
* The silent cartoon webcomic ''Webcomic/SilentSillies'' features pictures in the character thought & speech bubbles to convey the story as apposed to words. Pulling the item out of the bubble is a common element for the silent comic as well.
* ''Webcomic/{{Sinfest}}'': [[ChasteHero Criminy]] used to all the time when reading to [[SuccubiAndIncubi Fuchsia]], one of those [[http://www.sinfest.net/view.php?date=2010-04-25 episodes]] leading directly to her rather spectacular HeelFaceTurn.
* ''Webcomic/TalesFromSomewhere'': In ''The Legend'', [[https://www.talesfromsomewhere.com/comic/chapter-2-the-legend/ch2p6-goblins-fight/ "Goblins Fight"]], Nandiel casts his spells with a speech bubble containing an image of the effect instead of the name of the spell.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* The storytelling in ''WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends'' is usually limited to SpeakingSimlish and actions, but this is still used on rare occasions. In "Doggone It", for example, Lumpy figuring out that the sound of a whistle is what makes [[MeaningfulName Whi]][[KillerRabbit stle]] go crazy is represented by him [[VisualPun literally]] connecting the dots into one in a thought bubble.
* In one of the origin comics, if not THE ORIGIN, of ''WebAnimation/BattleForDreamIsland'', Woody speaks in pictures. However, when the show started he spoke only in incoherent babbling and screaming.
* Every single character in ''WebAnimation/DanTheMan'' is only capable of speaking in pictures, due to the series taking place inside an old-school video game. It is [[SuddenlySpeaking subverted]] in Stage 6 by Dan and Ana (two {{player character}}s) being able to properly speak to each other by the in-game chat and in Stages 14 and 15, where [[spoiler:Josie (an NPC) learns to communicate the same way after she learns the truth about her existence.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In an episode of ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'', when Lois revealed that her wealthy father offered them a million dollars after she and Peter were newly married, but she turned it down because "they could make their own way", Peter has a thought bubble containing an animation that showed him killing Lois rather violently.
* Shows up ''several times'' in ''WesternAnimation/MoonGirlAndDevilDinosaur2023'' to reflect characters' states of emotions or something going on at the moment like someone calling off-camera or a phone ringing, in keeping with the comic book style of the show.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TinyPlanets'', the [[SpeakingSimlish Simlish-Speaking]] protagonists occasionally produce pictorial thought bubbles -- which appear to be visible to other people. In "Spring Cleaning", Bong has an idea and, after failing to explain it with Simlish and hand gestures, produces a pictorial thought bubble which Bing examines and nods thoughtfully.
