AliceAndBob are in love with each other. However, they belong (or [[StrawAffiliation are considered to belong]]) to different factions that are locked in some kind of war with each other. This may be nations or civilizations in a regular war, the factions of a civil war, FeudingFamilies, or whatever.

The lovers are likely to ''not'' be StarCrossedLovers: In some works they are, but in others they are never kept apart. Instead, the drama is about how they have to fight for their love or what a high price they have to pay for it as people shun at least one of them as being some variety of CategoryTraitor. Or simply the internal struggle of hating one nation/faction/family/whatever while loving one member of it. Don't be surprised if some StrawLoser antagonists go all EntitledToHaveYou.

While the love is usually sexual and monogamous, [[{{Polyamory}} polyamorous]] and [[TrueCompanions non]]-[[HeterosexualLifePartners sexual]] love may also be included as long as it's portrayed as love.

Compare EthicalSlut and MalignedMixedMarriage. If Love Across Battlelines is combined with TroubledSympatheticBigot, also compare SexIsEvilAndIAmHorny as well as LoveRedeems. If the lover is an antagonist rather than a citizen/relative/whatever of the enemy nation/family/whatever, see instead DatingCatwoman if she remains a villain and DefectingForLove if she makes a HeelFaceTurn[=/=]HighHeelFaceTurn. WarShip covers fanon versions.

Note that a Love Across Battlelines plot often doesn't have a division into a good side and a villainous side - it is common that BothSidesHaveAPoint and that the protagonists view the conflict as a senseless GoodVersusGood.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* A staple in the various ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'' series, as part of its traditional LoveHurts Aesop.
* In ''Anime/{{K}}'', Scepter 4 and HOMRA are [[PunchClockVillain more or less enemies...]] but the top 3 of both sides have constant ShipTease. [[spoiler: Luckily, in season 2, they make an alliance with both of them and the Silver Clan,]] but look at the [[http://www.hulu.com/watch/851536 opening fight scene of the second season]]. While Saruhiko and Misaki aren't exactly on speaking terms at the time of the series, Mikoto and Reisi's interactions and Izumo and Seri's interactions make it clear they'd rather be doing things other than fighting. And Izumo clearly knows Misaki and Saruhiko won't stay enemies forever.
* One of the most fundamental crises and tragedies in ''Manga/TheSevenDeadlySins'' ends up being this between [[spoiler: Meliodas and Elizabeth. 3,000 years ago, during the First Holy War, Meliodas, the son of the Demon King, fell in love with Elizabeth, the daughter of the Supreme Deity. As punishment, the respective deities cursed their children to be forever StarCrossedLovers: Meliodas would be revived over and over while Elizabeth would be reincarnated over and over, destined to always meet but never be together. By the start of the story, Elizabeth had been reincarnated ''108'' times, and it becomes one of the ultimate plot points to ScrewDestiny.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* The premise of ''ComicBook/TwentyFists'' involves the leaders of two rival fistfighting gangs, Chel and Billie, falling in love and managing all the metaphorical and literal conflicts that arise from that.
* Histrionix and Melodrama in ''ComicBook/{{Asterix}} and the Great Divide'', where the battle lines are literally a trench cut through the town.
* An Angel and a Demon in ''ComicBook/{{Preacher}}''. At one point, the Angel is laying out the whole story in truly florid PurpleProse and Jesse interrupts: "What is this, your letter to Penthouse? You fucked her. She got pregnant. They caught you. I know this part." [[spoiler: It turns out they weren't actually in love - they were forced into it by [[GodIsEvil God Almighty]] specifically to create Genesis.]]
* Alana and Marko in ''ComicBook/{{Saga}}'' whose respective homes, the planet Landfall and its moon, Wreath are wrapped up in a prolonged and bloody war.
* In one issue of ''Comicbook/Hawkman2018'', when Carter is going over his past lives, he recalls a period when he was continually reincarnated on alternate sides of a seemingly endless war. The first step to peace comes when he steps into No Man's Land and offers his ration pack to the enemy ... and the soldier who responds turns out to be Shiera's incarnation. It's implied that the whole time he was reincarnating into this conflict, she was ''always'' reincarnated on the opposite side.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* In the ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'' of Creator/AAPessimal, the love story is the [[BlackGalOnWhiteGuyDrama mixed-race romance]] of Julian Smith-Rhodes and Ruth N'Kweze. Julian isn't just a white guy. He isn't quite the heir - but in the line of succession - to one of the richest and most influential men in [[UsefulNotes/SouthAfrica Rimwards Howondaland]]. She is a Princess in the Disc's analogue of [[DarkestAfrica Black Africa]]. Julian's country is stuck in UsefulNotes/TheApartheidEra and what he's up to with Ruth is not only socially shocking, it's ''illegal''. Ruth's nation is in a perpetual Cold War with Rimwards Howondaland, one which occasionally gets hot. At least partly because of apartheid. As all this is happening in faraway Ankh-Morpork, people around them collude to keep their secret, and their families accept it as one of those things. The rules are different in the Big City. But sooner or later both need to return to their respective homelands.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animated]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLionKingIISimbasPride'': Kovu is sent by the Outsiders to infiltrate Simba's pride, earn their trust and assassinate the lion king. However, he quickly falls in love with Kiara and, realizing how horrific his family's vengeful philosophy truly is, abandons the original plan and decides to conciliate the two factions in order to achieve true peace.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/AllCoppersAre'': Joe and Sue are, respectively, a copper and a gang member. Unfortunately for them, since Sue's gang and partner Barry are heavy on criminal activity, they clash a lot during the movie. Despite that, it's love at first sight for the two of them.
* ''Film/{{Avatar}}'': The protagonist is a human soldier falling in love with a warrior of the tribe he's hired to defend the evil megacorporation against.
* Oboro and Gennosuke of ''Film/{{Shinobi}}'' are StarcrossedLovers from FeudingFamilies who are in the chosen 5 from each side to fight to the death.
* [[OurVampiresAreDifferent Sonja]] and [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent Lucian]] in ''Film/UnderworldRiseOfTheLycans''. The [[FurAgainstFang never-ending feud]] between vampires and werewolves becomes a full-out war because of their relationship.
* In ''Film/{{Sterne}}'', between [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep "Walter"]], a conscience-stricken German corporal, and Ruth, a Greek Jew imprisoned in the nearby concentration camp.
* In ''Film/BlackBook'' Ellis is supposed to be a spy for [[LaResistance the Dutch resistance]] but things get messy when she falls in love with the target of her HoneyTrap, SS intelligence Ludwig, who turns out to be an AntiVillain. [[spoiler: They still don't get any happy ending.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Kat and Marco in ''Literature/TheShadowOfTheLion''. Their subplot includes several {{Shout Out}}s to Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet.
* Aral and Cordelia when they meet for the first time in ''Literature/ShardsOfHonor''.
* [[spoiler: Gawyn and Egwene]] end up on opposite sides in [[spoiler: the schism in the White Tower]] in ''Literature/TheWheelOfTime''.
* Susanna and Marc in ''[[Literature/SixteenThirtyTwo 1634: The Bavarian Crisis]]''. Susanna was Catholic, and Marc a Calvinist, which was a pretty big deal during the 17th century, particularly during the UsefulNotes/ThirtyYearsWar.
* ''Literature/ThisIsHowYouLoseTheTimeWar'' features two opposing intelligence agents and soldiers, Red and Blue, as they discover each other through coded messages throughout space and time. Eventually, after enough messages, the two begin to fall for one another, and seek to change time to leave the battlefield altogether at the end of the book.
* Torquato Tasso's ''Gerusalemme Liberata'' features a sub-plot involving a heathen amazon Clorinda and a Christian knight Tancredi in love but on opposite sides. Eventually, they end up fighting each other (she was disguised in a full armor) and the girl is mortally wounded by Tancredi and dies.
* ''Tomorrow War'' series by Alexander Zorich began with neo-Zoroastrian colonists as a potential enemy whom Terran military with first-hand knowledge admire and envy for [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy neat, honorable and determined]] traits even while abhorring dystopian sides of their society. The protagonist SpaceCadet volunteered into [[EnemyMine joint operation]] against an alien threat, its participants were received with great hospitality and praised. He ended up in a LoveTriangle with two lady officers, then betrothed to one, then the war began and he met both, but not before realizing that with his bride and a good friend somewhere there it doesn't feel the same as blowing up ''unknown'' {{Worthy Opponent}}s.
* ''Literature/TheSuccessionDuology'' has Rana and the Rix commando, as well Laurent and Nara who are on completely opposite sides of political spectrum and have tremendously differing views on the Emperor [[spoiler: however Laurent comes to agree with Nara.]]
* ''Literature/WarriorCats'' has this happen several times. Inter-Clan romances are banned specifically ''because'' they lead to the conflict of loyalty to Clan vs. loyalty to mate in a battle, but this doesn't stop these relationships from forming.
* In ''[[Literature/TheCenturyTrilogy Fall of Giants]]'', there are Walter von Ulrich and Lady Maud Fitzherbert, who are from Germany and Great Britain respectively. Since they are both of noble birth, their families would have no problem with their relationship - if it weren't for the fact that they happened to fall in love shortly before UsefulNotes/WorldWarI.
* In ''Literature/BlackDaggerBrotherhood'', The Chosen Layla and the Leader of the Band of Bastards Xcor are in love and in opposing sides of a civil war. Layla is loyal to the legal monarchy and is expecting the child of one of the King Wrath's Elite warriors. Xcor is trying to overthrow the king. But for Layla's sake he is trying to find bloodless methods via loopholes and caveats in the old laws.
* PlayedForDrama in ''Literature/TheNightingaleKristinHannah'' between [[spoiler:Vianne and Captain Beck.]] Although both of the characters simply miss intimacy more than they actually care for each other, their relationship eventually becomes rife with {{UST}} (complete with [[HeldGaze Held Gazes]] and an AlmostKiss). The subplot is finally resolved when [[spoiler:Vianne is forced to cave his head in with a shovel when he discovers her sister concealing an Allied airman.]]
* In the Bulgarian short story ''The Peach Thief'', the wife of a Bulgarian colonel falls in love with a Serbian POW. [[spoiler: He gets shot for breaking into the colonel's mansion to steal the eponymous peaches.]]
* ''Literature/TheLicaniusTrilogy'' features a platonic example. Despite needing to kill them for the advancement of his plan, Caeden still harbours fondness for his old friends in the Venerate, and the feeling is usually mutual.
* In ''[[Literature/TheBridgeKingdomArchives Traitor Queen]]'' [[spoiler: Prince Keris]] of Maridrina and [[spoiler: general Zarrah Anaphora]] of Valcotta. Maridrina and Valcotta are great enemies and their war has been going on for [[ForeverWar hundreds of years]].
* ''Literature/RoseOfRapture'' is a RomanceNovel that sees the central characters, who are in a HappilyArrangedMarriage, be torn apart by being on the opposite sides of the UsefulNotes/WarsOfTheRoses.
* ''Literature/TheSunneInSplendour'': Childhood sweethearts [[UsefulNotes/RichardIII Richard]] and Anne briefly fit this category, after her Yorkist father switches sides and joins the Lancastrian cause. Anne's parents force her to marry the Lancastrian heir Edouard, while Richard stays loyal to his brother, [[UsefulNotes/EdwardIV King Edward IV]]. Richard's side wins and Anne's husband and father are killed. Although she's branded a traitor by many Yorkists, Edward knows she was her father's pawn so he forgives her and allows Richard and Anne marry. The same events are portrayed in the novel ''Literature/TheVirginWidow'', albeit in a LighterAndSofter form.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Walter and Dasha in ''Series/NineteenFortyOne2009''. He's the Nazi officer in charge of the forces occupying her village, and she's secretly in LaResistance.
* ''Series/GoodOmens2019'': A platonic example ([[spoiler:until season 2]]).
** [[OurAngelsAreDIfferent Angel Aziraphale]] is Heaven's representative on Earth, [[OurDemonsAreDifferent demon Crowley]] is Hell's representative on Earth, they are meant to be [[ForbiddenLove hereditary enemies]]. [[OppositesAttract And yet]], over the course of [[OlderThanDirt 6000 years]], they develop deep affection and love, both for humanity and for each other. They are [[OneTrueLove on their own side]].
--->'''Aziraphale''': I am an angel. You are a demon. We are [[DatingCatwoman hereditary enemies]]... Get Thee behind me, foul fiend! (''then, courteously'') After you!
** At the end of season 2, when [[spoiler:Heaven wants Aziraphale back]], Crowley [[spoiler: [[AnguishedDeclarationOfLove confesses his true feelings to the angel]]]] and [[spoiler:[[TheBigDamnKiss desperately kisses him]]]].
** In season two we also learn that [[spoiler:Gabriel and Beelzebub]] fell in love with each other.
* This is one of the main themes of ''Series/NorthAndSouthUS''. Pretty much everyone experience this kind of heartache as the nation is torn apart. The main storyline is of the love between the northern family Hazard and the southern family Main.
** The main protagonists George Hazard and Orry Main are HeterosexualLifePartners, forced to fight on opposing sides in the war.
** George has a little brother and Orry has a little sister (Brett, not the other one) who are engaged to each other.
** Orry's LoveInterest Madelaine is trapped in an ArrangedMarriage with an evil southerner who is in another political camp in the South's internal power struggle.
** George's wife is Catholic, making some of George's relatives consider her an enemy in the religious war between Protestantism and Catholicism.
** Finally we have Virgilia, taking the "wrong" side in the ongoing "race war", falling in love with a black man.
* In ''Series/WhiteCollar'' Mozzie imagines that his mother and father were respectively Russian and American spies.
* In the WWII miniseries ''Series/{{Island at War}}'' a British Channel Islander and a German airman fall secretly in love for little other reason than to evoke this trope. To make matters angstier, he might have dropped the bomb that killed her father.
* ''Series/TheOuterLimits1995'': In "Phobos Rising", Earth's two major power blocs, the Free Alliance and the Coalition of Middle Eastern and Pacific States, are in a state of cold war. Major James Bowen, the second-in-command of the Alliance base on UsefulNotes/{{Mars}}, and Major Dara Talif, the base's Coalition observer, are about to start a relationship when a giant explosion encompasses Earth. Their closeness causes the base's commander Colonel Samantha Elliot to question Bowen's objectivity once the crisis begins.
* ''Series/TheTwilightZone1959'' episode "Two" focuses on the last two survivors of a war (possibly [[AdamAndEvePlot the last survivors of humanity]]), one a man and the other a woman, who encounter each other in the ruins of a small town and gradually fall in love, though it's harder for the woman to let go of the war than the man.
* ''Series/TheWhiteQueen'':
** UsefulNotes/EdwardIV falls in love with the Lancastrian widow Elizabeth Woodville and scandalizes the country when he marries her in secret.
** Although originally on the same, Yorkist, side and betrothed to each other, [[UsefulNotes/RichardIII Richard of Gloucester]] and Anne Neville are torn apart when her father switches to the Lancastrian side and forces Anne to marry the Lancastrian heir. After much tribulation, and the death of her husband and father, Richard rides to her rescue and they eventually marry.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Podcasts]]
* ''Podcast/BrimstoneValleyMall'': An unknowing example with [[spoiler:Asmoraius, a demon, falling in love with Trent, an angel. The two are inherently at odds due to the ForeverWar between Heaven and Hell. Neither of them realize the other isn't human until the end of the first season, prompting an OhCrap reaction when they find out]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Radio]]
* In ''Radio/RevoltingPeople'', Mary Oliphaunt is an outspoken firebrand revolutionary ... who happens to be completely in love with the commander of the Redcoats occupying the town, Captain Grimshaw. This doesn't affect her revolutionary zeal in the slightest, but it does make conversations between them very confusing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Theater]]
* In UsefulNotes/ColdWar rock opera ''Theatre/{{Chess}}'', Florence, a Hungarian refugee whose father was captured and possibly killed by Soviet troops during the Budapest Revolution, falls in love with the Russian grandmaster who is representing the USSR in a InternationalShowdownByProxy chess match.
* ''Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet'' is probably the TropeCodifier. Romeo and Juliet, children of the violently feuding Montague and Capulet families, fall in LoveAtFirstSight when Romeo crashes a Capulet party.
* ''Theatre/WestSideStory'' is ''Romeo and Juliet'' in New York with rival street gangs. Tony and Maria fall in LoveAtFirstSight at a dance which the Jets and the Sharks hold on "neutral territory."
* ''Theatre/{{Aida|Verdi}}'' and the related [[Theatre/AidaJohnRice musical]]: The titular character and her lover Radames.
* ''Theatre/TheLightPrincess'': Althea, the eponymous Light Princess, and heir of her kingdom, and Digby, The Solemn Prince, heir of the rival kingdom. Bonus points for falling in love in the no-man's land between the two kingdoms ''immediately following a battle''.

When a conflict erupts between the two factions, she initially aids the latter, though still endeavors to bring peace to both sides. However, [[spoiler:Colonel's death at the hands of Zero causes Iris to go mad from grief, and she absorbs her brother's remains to attack the protagonist, who is forced to kill her]].
* In the ''VideoGame/MitsumeteKnight'' franchise, this is one of the possible pairings, between the main male protagonist and [[spoiler: Raizze Haimer]]:
** In the DatingSim game, he's a Dolphan mercenary, she's [[spoiler: one of the Eight Generals of Valpha-Valaharian]], who will be, especially at the end of the game [[spoiler: where she'll want to avenge her fallen leader and father by the hands of the protagonist]], be torn between her duty and her love;
** In the RPG game, he's the Captain of Orcadia's Royal Knights, she's [[spoiler: a NobleFugitive from an aristocrat family of the fallen Parmet Kingdom]]; she'll try to assassinate him several times before gradually growing fond of him, [[spoiler: and later, if you're following the Licence of Heartless Odd Number route, he reveals to her he's the Crown Prince of Parmet in hiding, and just as much out for revenge against Orcadia as her: after this, they'll completely fall in love with each other.]].
* Oichi and Nagamasa in some scenarios of ''VideoGame/SamuraiWarriors'', since Oichi's the younger sister of UsefulNotes/OdaNobunaga.
* In ''VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss'', you can spend a long MatchMakerQuest getting General Aslan Frings of Malkuth together with General Jozette Cecille of Kimlasca, although they won't get properly engaged until after you stop the war. [[spoiler:[[ShaggyDogStory Too bad Frings gets killed by the plot soon afterward, whether you did the sidequest or not.]]]]
* ''VideoGame/MyChildLebensborn'': The child is the product of a loving relationship between a Norwegian woman and an occupying soldier from UsefulNotes/NaziGermany.

* For a time in ''Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick'', Therkla the female orc ninja was in love with the bard Elan. He was at the time a close ally of the paladin-king Lord Hinjo, while she was TheDragon of an evil aristocrat trying to overthrow him. He had feelings for her as well, [[spoiler:although he remained devoted to Haley]].
** And tragically, [[spoiler: she was poisoned by her master for her perceived betrayal and died in Elan's arms, and refused to be resurrected if she couldn't be with him]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* In ''Series/{{Noob}}'' this is the case between Kary and Arthéon [[spoiler:for the time it lasts]], the two playing in enemy faction is a {{MMORPG}} that plenty of characters take as SeriousBusiness.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In the ''WesternAnimation/Ben10'' episode "Big Fat Alien Wedding" Ben's cousin Joel is marrying a BlobMonster alien called a Leopan, whose species have had a long history of conflict over decades with [[SpacePolice the Plumbers]].
