'''Bale:''' I promise no such thing.
-->-- ''Website/TheEditingRoom'''s abridged script for ''Film/BatmanBegins''

A character changes voice while in costume. It is usually part of an attempt to disguise themselves. The voice change may be done by themselves, or done via external means, such as a mask or helmet with built-in voice modulator. More extreme cases may have a second voice actor CastAsAMask to provide it.

This is distinct from the more appearance-oriented ClarkKenting. This is an effective way to maintain a SecretIdentity and it can also suggest a case of SecretIdentityIdentity if you consider that the person's two identities have totally different voices and mannerisms.

If your secret identity includes [[{{Crossdresser}} disguising as the other sex]], [[GenderConcealingVoice this becomes especially necessary]], since otherwise the voice will most likely be a [[LarynxDissonance dead giveaway]].

Compare PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep, when accessing your power (and, usually, disguising yourself in the process) grants you a different voice. Compare ShiftingVoiceOfMadness. Related to ProfessionalVoiceDissonance, where a character changes their voice in order to sound more professional or authoritative; in this trope's case, the job is being a superhero.

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* Shuichi Akai from ''Manga/CaseClosed'', was supposedly killed by Kir on orders from the Black Organization, only to resurface under the alias of Subaru Okiya, with a voice-changing choker underneath his turtleneck sweater to alter his [[Creator/ShuichiIkeda distinctive voice]], even played by a different voice actor to complete the masquerade.
* Hei of ''Anime/DarkerThanBlack'' has his voice deepen when he goes from his persona as [[NiceGuy Li]] into his identity as the "Black Reaper".
* Lelouch from ''Anime/CodeGeass'' speaks with his regular teenager voice when in his civilian persona, but switches to a much deeper, booming (read: ''much'' more epic) voice when acting as the RebelLeader Zero.
* All Might from ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' speaks in a booming and enthusiastic voice fit for a superhero; as civilian Toshinori Yagi, he sounds tired and deadpan. This has less to do with preserving a secret identity and more to do with keeping up his image as the tireless symbol of peace and justice.
* ''Literature/SwordArtOnline'': In the anime adaptation of the Phantom Bullet arc, the normally shy Shino speaks in a slightly deeper, rougher voice when in-game as the ColdSniper Sinon. Meanwhile, the DudeLooksLikeALady avatar that Kirito receives in this arc ''initially'' distorts his voice into a falsetto, but [[OohMeAccentsSlipping it's forgotten]] as the story gets more serious. In addition, Death Gun wears a mask that deepens and distorts his voice. [[spoiler:This helps conceal the fact that "Death Gun" is actually a shared identity. When Death Gun first appears, his manner of speaking is highly dramatic due to him being controlled by the young and impulsive Kyoji Shinkawa; but when Kirito encounters him later, his cadence is much softer and calmer, since he is controlled by the more experienced elder brother Shouichi.]]
** In the spinoff ''Literature/SwordArtOnlineAlternativeGunGaleOnline'', a number of characters have higher or lower voices in-game due to using avatars with a vastly different body type from their own, with one exception of Miyu who keeps her real-life voice and mannerism when playing her small-sized avatar Fukaziroh.
* In ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', Son Gohan puts on a fake “superhero voice” when he is disguised as the Great Saiyaman.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/BlackPanther'': Kasper Cole puts on a Wakandan accent and lays on the PurpleProse while acting as Black Panther (and later as a ComicBook/WhiteTiger).
-->'''Kasper:''' Fifth lowlife we've rousted today. [[DeadpanSnarker Two more, we get a set of steak knives]]... \
'''[[ComicBook/WarMachine Rhodey]]:''' Get into character, Tiger. \
'''Kasper:''' Yeah, yeah... ([[PaintingTheMedium now in giant, blood-red letters]]) JUDGE HARRISON- Your sins have found you!
* Parodied in ''Comicbook/TheSimpsons'' comics where Milhouse takes up the Bartman mantle after Bart quit due to a smear campaign and he talks about using "that dark, raspy voice that makes him sound like one of [Bart's] aunts."
* ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'': During the ''ComicBook/{{Identity Crisis|1998}}'' storyline (where Spidey was framed for murder), Peter Parker came up with four new costumed identities, including the Hornet. After a new conference where the Hornet claimed "You won't need to worry about Spider-Man anymore", he was confronted by [[ComicBook/FantasticFour the Human Torch]]. Peter notes that he changed his voice as Spider-Man and changed it again as Hornet, but wasn't sure if he could fool the Torch, who was one of his oldest friends. Luckily, Johnny is more concerned about making sure that Hornet understands that Spidey has at least four very, very powerful friends, and that if he learned Hornet somehow harmed the webhead there'd be hell to pay.
** Also, in the early days this was used to HandWave why no one recognized him as Peter Parker when he was Spider-Man because his mask muffled his voice.
* ComicBook/{{Static}} used his electromagnetic powers to distort his voice to the point of unrecognizability in his original Milestone run and initial DCU appearances. His [[WesternAnimation/StaticShock DCAU]] and ''WesternAnimation/YoungJustice2010'' incarnations lack this trait, and it would be abandoned entirely in his 2021 comic reboot.
* ''ComicBook/{{Superman}}'': Most versions of the character, starting with the 1940s radio serials but most famously in the adaptation mentioned in Film below, speak very differently as Kal-El than as Clark Kent: Generally he pitches the latter's voice slightly higher and affects a mild stammer, and sometimes hams up his Kansas farm-boy accent a bit, as well as altering his posture and body language to make himself seem smaller and less confident. Occasionally this is attributed to some sort of minor superpower involving "precise muscle control" or even low-key psychic powers, DependingOnTheWriter and continuity, but most versions explain it as Clark simply being a talented actor.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* In ''Fanfic/TheLoudAwakening'', when the mercenaries whom Tetherby hires to kidnap the Loud children first capture Lincoln, they follow it up by getting the attention of the Loud sisters by sending them a picture of Lincoln who is in a white hospital gown, has his hands tied up behind his back and duct tape over his mouth, and is badly battered and bruised. There is also a letter that tells them they will get a call with further instructions. When they call Lori's phone, the voice of the lead merc is distorted to the point of sounding completely unrecognizable.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film]]
* The 1946 FilmSerial supervillain ''Film/TheCrimsonGhost'' hides his identity behind a skull mask, which has a microphone to distort his voice as he's a member of the faculty the KidnappedScientist belongs to.
* In ''Film/SupermanTheMovie'', [[ClarkKenting Clark Kent]] has a distinctively weaker and higher pitched voice and a very different, more wishy-washy speech pattern than Superman does. This is most noticeable in a scene where he is considering confessing to Lois that he is Superman, but chickens out at the last second and resumes his weaker persona.
* In ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'', Batman uses an electronic voice modulator to alter his voice.
* ''Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy''
** The deepening of Bruce Wayne's voice when he puts on the Batman costume sounds like he's gargling with gravel. Oddly, he still does this even when he's talking to people as Batman who know his secret identity.
** He takes this to another level in ''Film/BatmanBegins'' where he has his normal Bruce Wayne voice, a raspy voice for talking to allies as Batman, and the gravel-gargling voice he uses when trying to scare the crap out of bad guys.
* In ''Film/GreenLantern2011'', Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan plays with this a bit - speaking in his dramatic superhero voice when trying to impress Carol Ferris as Green Lantern, but she soon sees through this.
-->'''Carol''': I've seen you NAKED! Did you think I wouldn't recognize you because you covered up your cheekbones?!
* ''Film/IronMan'': Stark's Iron Man armor's helmet makes his voice more mechanical.
* In ''Film/OnHerMajestysSecretService'', in the scenes where Bond is impersonating an expert on heraldry Creator/GeorgeLazenby is dubbed by the actor who played the real expert.
* Parodied in ''Film/SpiderManHomecoming'', where Peter Parker's suit (also made by Stark)'s "Enhanced Interrogation Mode" gives the bumbling teenager's voice a comically deep filter. And he also tries to affect a BrooklynRage accent when saving his classmates.
* Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious in ''Franchise/StarWars''. Palpatine loses the "normal" voice entirely after Mace Windu's attack when he becomes Emperor.
* Royal Pain from ''Film/SkyHigh2005'' speaks with the, slightly processed, voice of Creator/PatrickWarburton whenever the elaborate mask is in place to preserve TheReveal that "he" is actually [[spoiler:Gwen Grayson, played by Creator/MaryElizabethWinstead who uses her own voice after removing the mask]].
* In the ''Film/{{Scream}}'' franchise, Ghostface always uses a voice-changer voiced by Creator/RogerLJackson to disguise their identity, which changes with every movie.
* ''Film/Masquerade2021'': The burglars use voice disguisers. This is especially effective with [[spoiler:Daniel]]. Also, the fact that Rose ''doesn't'' disguise her voice [[spoiler:is a hint she's not part of the same crew]].
* ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse:'' Miles tries doing this at the end of the film when talking to his father in costume. Since Miles is a teenager, it's him just trying to put on a deeper voice and not really succeeding.
** ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse'' has Miles still doing it, and shows Gwen does the same when she's got the mask on, along with adopting a different accent.
* In ''[[Animation/MissionIncredibleAdventuresOnTheDragonsTrail Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf - Mission Incredible: Adventures on the Dragon's Trail]]'', this factors into a plot twist involving one of the characters. [[spoiler:Tyrano-Rex's voice sounds nothing like his voice as Little Blue Dragon, the former sounding like an adult and the latter sounding like a child.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Creator/HarryHarrison's "Literature/TheFourthLawOfRobotics": The surveillance cameras record the bank robber as having a very feminine voice. Donovan points out that since robot voice simulators are used for all robots, changing one out for bass or soprano is easy enough. It is one of the clues he uses to prove the robber must have been a robot.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Series/{{Arrowverse}}
** ''Series/{{Arrow}}'':
*** Oliver Queen uses a voice modulator that artificially deepens his voice. This not only keeps people from recognizing his celebrity voice but also works to intimidate thugs suddenly faced with a murderous and guttural archer. When pretending to be the Green Arrow, ostensibly a new vigilante taking up the mantle, he changes the modulator's pitch to further sell the illusion that he's a different person.
*** The Series/{{Smallville}} version has this too.
*** Sara Lance uses a voice modulator similar to the Arrow's to prevent people from identifying her as the Canary.
** ''Series/TheFlash2014'': Whenever Barry Allen needs to talk to his crush as the Flash, he vibrates his vocal cords at super speed so she won't be able to recognize his voice. His {{Evil Counterpart}}s, Reverse Flash, Zoom, and Savitar all use this technique to alter their voices, but they end up deepening their voices so much that people mistake them for demons. (The Rival also does this, but it’s less ominous-sounding, more akin to the Barry version.)
*** Zoom, Savitar, and Godspeed also use [[CastAsAMask different voice actors when in costume]]. This is mainly done to hide the identity of the speedster from the audience. For example, Zoom is voiced by Creator/TonyTodd in costume, Savitar's costume voice is done by Creator/TobinBell, and Godspeed in costume is voiced by Creator/BDWong.
*** Red Death is likewise using a voice modulator to disguise the fact that [[spoiler:it's [[Series/Batwoman2019 Ryan Wilder]] from another Earth]].
** ''Series/Batwoman2019'': In the reverse of the standard where the heroic person has a more guttural voice, Kate Kane has a noticeable vocal fry whereas Batwoman tends to speak without it.
* In the ''Series/Batman1966'' television series, Bruce Wayne was [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgCkmUS1IYI put into a situation involving him]] HoldingBothSidesOfTheConversation. Since he's on a phoneline, it's just a simple matter of switching between his Batman voice and his Bruce voice.
* ''Series/BlackLightning2018'': Pierce gives his voice a reverb effect when he's in the suit. Jennifer also mentions that his face "hurt to look at," further helping obscure his identity, though his face doesn't look any different to the audience.
* ''Series/Daredevil2015'': Matt Murdock has a change of cadence to his voice when he is costumed up as Daredevil. As himself in public, Matt has a jovial, easygoing cadence, even in court. When in costume, he is much more terse and direct, which is noticeably different.
* ''Series/HunterStreet'': When disguised as [=HoodieHead=], [[spoiler:Sophie has a vocal modulator to change her voice to be unrecognizable.]]
* In ''Series/ChoujinkiMetalder,'' Tsurugi has a completely different voice actor for when he’s transformed. In the final episode, [[spoiler:it's a BittersweetEnding where he loses his powers but can’t return to his human form ever again, and Metalder speaking with the Tsurugi voice now ''really'' hammers it in.]]
* In ''Franchise/PowerRangers,'' a few mystery Rangers have had deeper voices that disguised their secret identities. The first was the original Gold Ranger in ''Zeo'', who had a different voice actor when morphed.
* ''Series/KamenRiderFourze'' does it better than any of the above, making for a hell of a {{Reveal}}: [[spoiler:you’d never guess from the deep growly voice of one of the BigBad’s generals (that one being Scorpion) that he’s actually a she (aka Sarina Sonoda, the mild-mannered NiceGirl teacher) and was right under the heroes’ noses all along.]]
** From the same series, Virgo is assumed to be a female, with the womanly voice to match thanks to Creator/RieTanaka. [[spoiler:Come episode 42, and it's revealed that she is actually a ''he'' - Kuniteru Emoto aka Tachibana to be precise.]]
* ''Series/TheMaskedSinger'' uses synthesizers to pitch up the disguised contestants' speaking voices.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Radio]]
* The UrExample is probably the 1940s RadioDrama ''Radio/TheAdventuresOfSuperman'', in which voice actor Creator/BudCollyer shifted his speech down an octave whenever he switched from Clark Kent to the costumed hero. This carried over to his later work in ''Superman'' cartoons.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* In ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamCity'', for the brief time he's actually Bruce Wayne, Kevin Conroy uses his higher pitched voice, before switching to the Batman growl when he suits up.
* In ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamKnight'', the titular Knight uses an electronic voice modulator to distort his normal voice. [[spoiler:Given that Batman would recognize Jason's voice otherwise]], it does its job well.
* In ''VideoGame/BatmanTheTelltaleSeries'', Batman, himself, uses an electronic voice modulator to deepen his voice. The leader of the Children of Arkham uses a mask with a modulator, as well, to conceal their true identity as [[spoiler:Vicki Vale]].
* ''Videogame/BlazBlue'': Hakumen wears full-body armor and a deep, echoing voice courtesy of the armor. His voice is actually much softer, courtesy of him being [[spoiler:an alternate timeline Jin Kisaragi.]]
* In ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses'', the helmets of the Flame Emperor and Death Knight alter their voices, making them menacingly deep, to conceal their true identities as [[spoiler:Edelgard and Jeritza]].
* Dark Lord Gaol, from ''VideoGame/KidIcarusUprising'', has a deep and menacing voice when first encountered, due to BlackKnight armor that conceals their true identity as [[spoiler:[[SamusIsAGirl a young woman]] and Magnus's old friend. When she is encountered later in the game, her normal voice is used, albeit still slightly filtered through her armor.]]
* ''VideoGame/LaytonsMysteryJourneyKatrielleAndTheMillionairesConspiracy'': [[spoiler:Cesar Chance]]'s voice is quite nasally normally, but as Ratman, he has a deep, masculine voice. Shown in most adorable fashion when he's [[GoodParents taking care of his newborn baby]].
--> '''[[spoiler:Chance]]:''' Make way, make way! Here comes (voice drops) Ratman, to save the day.
* ImpliedTrope in the ''VideoGame/{{Neptunia}}'' series when it comes to Uni, whose voice becomes slightly but noticably deeper as [[SuperMode Black Sister]]. Uni is one of only a handful of characters whose voice changes while in HDD, but unlike the others, she doesn't have the excuse of [[OlderAlterEgo becoming noticeably older physically]] like Neptune, Plutia, and Peashy, as she is the only character who actually ''shrinks'' when in HDD. Combine this with the fact that none of the other CPU Candidates - Nepgear, Rom, and Ram - have their voices change at all when in HDD, and the implication is that Uni deliberately deepens her voice to compensate. [[PlayingWithATrope Played With]] when it comes to Uzume/Orange Heart. As Uzume, she has a deep tomboy voice, and as Orange Heart, she has a high-pitched voice to go with her more childish, innocent personality. It is later revealed that the latter is her true personality, and the former is a façade she puts on to keep people's hopes up, implying that, she too, intentionally deepens her voice.
* ''Franchise/RatchetAndClank''
** In ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando'', the Thief sounds like a digitally distorted man while wearing their costume, [[spoiler:but she has a regular-sounding female voice once the costume is off.]]
** In ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClankFutureACrackInTime'', at one point, Ratchet [[spoiler:pretends to be Dr. Nefarious in order to use the laser in his space station to destroy his fleet of ships]]. This disguise, of course, comes with that character's voice.
* ''VideoGame/StrangerOfParadiseFinalFantasyOrigin'' has the Chaos Advent, an early boss who resembles (and is voiced by [[Creator/ChristopherSabat the same VA]] who portrays) Garland. [[spoiler:After defeating them, they are revealed to actually be a young woman named Neon.]]
* ''VideoGame/TrailsSeries'':
** Done by two characters in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsOfColdSteel'': "C" wears a helmet that modulates his voice, disguising his true identity of [[spoiler:Crow]], and [[spoiler:Thomas]] notably adopts a deeper, more serious tone when he drops his facade of being a [[spoiler:carefree, lackadaisical teacher and reveals he's actually the Second Dominion of the Gralsritter]].
** In ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsIntoReverie'', the third protagonist of the game, "C", wears a helmet that also modulates his voice. The identity of this person turns out to be [[spoiler:[[PromotedToPlayable Rufus Albarea]].]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* In ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'', Noah [[https://www.egscomics.com/comic/2011-05-20 uses]] a different voice when he is disguised which is indicated by a different font and Dan references Batman's use of this in TheRant.
* In ''WebComic/DumbingOfAge'', whenever Amber changes into her Amazi-Girl disguise, her voice gets noticeably more gravelly, which is signified by the normally black text on white [[PaintingTheMedium becoming white text on blue]]. Interestingly, while Amber has a [[SplitPersonality split-personality disorder]], the vocal shift doesn't ''necessarily'' reflect that -- her Amber personality can use the Amazi-Girl voice if required and vice versa.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/AvengersAssemble:'' Citizen V speaks with an authoritative but distinctly all-American sounding baritone one would expect from a CaptainPatriotic character. When not around the cameras, he drops the "American" bit, going back to his natural German accent.
* In ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries'', Batman has a lower, more serious voice than Bruce Wayne. The shift is far more subtle than in the [[Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy Nolan films]], but he seems to put it on whenever he puts the suit on, [[UndercoverWhenAlone even when he's talking to people who know he is Bruce Wayne]]. However, from ''The New Batman Adventures'' onward in the DCAU, Bruce's voice shifted down to sound more like Batman than it used to.
** This gets PlayedForLaughs when Superman has to impersonate Batman when he goes missing (having been kidnapped by Brainiac). [[VoiceChangeling His voice is spot on]], [[PerfectDisguiseTerribleActing his mannerisms are not]]. Supes then creeps out Robin when he shows that he can do his voice too, thanks to his enhanced muscular control in his voice box. Superman drops the Batman growl during his fight with Bane, grunting in pain in his own voice.
* Just like the original Batman, in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond'' Terry's voice also changes in when he's in the bat-suit, though it's explained to be something the suit actually does somehow to help disguise his identity.
* Also from DCAU, the Batwoman in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanMysteryOfTheBatwoman'' has a voice unlike her real identity, [[spoiler:that is, any one of the three]]. This overlaps with CastAsAMask as the Batwoman has a voice actress who doesn't voice any of the other characters.
* ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheBraveAndTheBold:'' The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, also voiced by Kevin Conroy, has a deep voice as Batman. In his day job as a mild-mannered reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper, he once again has a lighter voice closer to Conroy's normal speaking voice.
* ''WesternAnimation/BigHero6TheSeries'': Hiro puts on a deeper, more "heroic" voice only when saving people who would logically recognize his voice, such as Aunt Cass or Karmi. He has no problem with using his normal voice when talking to supervillains.
* In ''WesternAnimation/DuckTales1987'', Fenton Crackshell is a nebbishy accountant with a voice to match, but when he puts on the Gizmo Duck costume, he becomes TheCape and starts talking in [[ISpeakInMeter stock hero speak]].
* On ''WesternAnimation/HeManAndTheMastersOfTheUniverse1983'', He-Man, and [[WesternAnimation/SheRaPrincessOfPower later She-Ra]], have deeper, more resonant, voices than they do as Adam and Adora. Which is probably the biggest difference between their superhero identities and their everyday ones, since otherwise [[ClarkKenting they look almost exactly the same]].
* In ''WesternAnimation/HeyArnoldTheMovie'', the mysterious informant “Deep Voice” has an altered low-pitched voice. Turns out that Deep Voice is [[spoiler:Helga Pataki who used a voice modulator]].
* ''WesternAnimation/MiraculousLadybug'':
** Gabriel Agreste drops his voice an octave when he is dressed as Hawk Moth, even when he's by himself.
** American heroes Knightowl and Sparrow have very different voices when heroes than when in civilian mode. [[spoiler:It helps to hide that both are female]].
* Parodied by Buttercup in ''WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls'' episode where they decide that they all need secret identities to be "real" superheroes. The "Mange" persona she adopts takes her TomboyishVoice and makes it so raspy it's ridiculous.
* ''WesternAnimation/SheZow'': Guy speaks in [[LarynxDissonance a high-pitched falsetto]] as [=SheZow=], since [[PronounTrouble she- he's]] supposed to be a girl. He drops the voice around people who know his secret.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSpectacularSpiderMan''
** Quentin Beck is a fairly mild-mannered guy, and talks in a hammy faux-British accent when being Mysterio.
** The Green Goblin has a personality so different from his civilian identity that it is appropriately represented [[CastAsAMask by giving the two separate voice actors]]. Interestingly, this version of the Goblin isn't a SplitPersonality.
* In the 1960s ''[[WesternAnimation/SpiderMan1967 Spider-Man]]'' series, Spider-Man's speaking voice is about an octave deeper than Peter Parker's, even when there's no need for it (e.g., when he's talking to himself and [[UndercoverWhenAlone there's nobody else around]]).
* In ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'', [[spoiler:Kenny]] deepens his voice when dressed as Mysterion. So do the other boys in their heroic (or in the case of Cartman, villainous) personas.
* ''WesternAnimation/SupermanTheatricalCartoons'' Clark Kent would always do this when changing into Superman.
-->'''Clark Kent:''' This looks like a job...
-->'''Superman:''' [[PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep For Superman.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/WanderOverYonder'': When Wander becomes a Batman-esque superhero in "The Boy Wander", his high-pitched southern simpleton voice suddenly becomes deeper, husky, and more serious.
