''Gangsta Granny'' is a children's novel by Creator/DavidWalliams (the guy who wrote ''Literature/{{Ratburger}}'' and ''Literature/TheMidnightGang'').

It focuses on an eleven-year-old boy named Ben, who likes history and wants to be a plumber but cannot dance, staying with his granny while his parents (who love ballroom dancing) go to a concert.

The granny likes crime novels, which Ben is interested in, but Granny's other interests (feeding ducks, ''TabletopGame/{{Scrabble}}'', etc) he finds boring and he dislikes her cabbage-based recipes.

When he finds what appear to be jewels in her cookie box, she tells him about how she used to be an international jewel thief, which makes Ben make a huge plan to steal the Crown Jewels.

It is mostly a humour book but there are some serious moments and a sort of moral about how elderly people aren't boring.

It eventually got a sequel in 2022.
----
!! ''Gangsta Granny'' provides examples of:
* ActionGirl: Despite being elderly, Granny is very fit and even ''climbs down a skyscraper'' at one point.
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Discussed. The Queen tells Ben and Granny that the last time someone tried to steal the Crown Jewels, the monarch at the time was so amused by the audacity of it that they let him go. The Queen decides to follow that precedent and lets Ben and Granny go as well.
* AnAesop: "Elderly people aren't boring. They can be quite interesting if given the chance."
** Also "Appreciate your family while you can."
* AlliterativeTitle: ''G''angsta ''G''ranny.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Ben finds his parents embarrassing because they get him to dance even though he can't and make him wear crazy outfits. Ben's mother also assures him that he can talk to her about girls anytime, in the process loudly telling both her friend and husband about it.
* AssShove: Ben talks about how people used to get penalized with a "red hot poker up the bum" way back when.
* BabyTalk: One of Granny's annoying habits is using baby talk with Ben even though he's eleven (she uses the word "beddybyes" for instance).
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: Granny dies but Ben and his parents become closer. Oh, and he gets to know his great-cousin Edna to boot.]]
* CharacterDeath: [[spoiler: At the end, Granny dies of cancer.]]
* CharacterTitle: Granny is mentioned in the title.
* ComedicUnderwearExposure:
** At the end of the book, the queen flashes her underwear.
** Earlier on, Granny does her so-called "naked yoga" in her underwear.
* CoolOldLady: Zigzagged. At first, Ben finds the granny boring. Then, he finds her cool with her past as a jewel thief. [[spoiler: This turns out to be a lie, but it turns out she's pretty darn cool anyway.]]
* CordonBleughChef: Granny is a competent chef, but tries to put cabbage into everything, even desserts.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Ben doesn't seem to like cabbage.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Ben thinks Granny's nickname for him (Benny) is too babyish.
* EntertainmentAboveTheirAge: Discussed; Ben's mother wonders if he's hiding a "naughty magazine" under his bed. Ben's only eleven.
* ExerciseExcuse: This book has an Exercise Excuse by proxy: when the NosyNeighbour wonders why Granny is not letting him come into her living room (actually because she and Ben were looking at allegedly-stolen treasure), Ben claims that Granny is doing her "naked yoga".
* ExtremeOmnivore: Downplayed for Granny, who doesn't mind eating spoiled cabbage.
* FeelingTheirAge: Subverted. Granny ''thinks'' she's too old to swim up a sewer pipe but she's not.
* {{Gasshole}}: One thing that Ben doesn't like about Granny is how she farts an awful lot and said farts smell of rotten cabbage.
* GassyGastronomy: After eating too many baked beans (in addition to [[TheAlcoholic drinking too much beer]]), Granddad Gumboyle farts so hard, he blows the roof off the house.
* GirlsHaveCooties: When Ben's mother thinks he's "expressing an interest in girls", he calls girls gross.
* GoshDangItToHeck: "Bums" is treated as a swear word.
* GrannyClassic: Zigzagged for Ben's granny. At first she's just a stereotypical granny who has false teeth, knits sweaters her grandson doesn't like, etc, but then she talks about being an international jewel thief. [[spoiler: This turns out to be a lie, but she does turn out to be more active and crafty than a stereotypical old lady.]]
* ILied: When confronted by the Queen, [[spoiler: Granny admits to having lied about being a jewel thief.]]
* InSeriesNickname: Granny calls Ben "Benny".
* MistakenForThief: [[spoiler: Invoked for Granny, who lies that she's a jewel thief]].
* NeedleworkIsForOldPeople: One of Granny's habits Ben doesn't like is knitting him sweaters with puppies and kittens on.
* NightmareFetishist: Ben really likes the gory parts of history (he mentions being hanged, drawn and quartered several times).
* NoNameGiven: We're not introduced to Ben's parents or his grandfather. Actually, Granny ain't named either, she's just called "Granny".
* NosyNeighbor: Granny has a neighbor who likes to look through her window.
* OldMaster: The granny is able to do many action things, including abseiling down the side of the hospital building with bed sheets.
* ParentsAsPeople: Ben's parents are disconnected from him and never seem to spend any quality time with their son, and Ben feels they loved ballroom dancing far more than they love him. However they do love him and in the end their love for ballroom is reduced to a "silly little competition" when they fear he's run away from home.
* PlotAllergy: Nobody is actually allergic to anything, but the narrator says that if anyone was allergic to cabbages, they wouldn't be able to be near Granny because she always has cabbage smell on her breath.
* PrejudiceAesop: The book is about a boy named Ben hating to stay with his "boring" grandmother, but then finding jewels in her biscuit tin and being told she used to steal them. The moral of the story is not to assume someone is boring just because they're old.
* SecretlyDying: [[spoiler: At first, Granny kept the worse of her diagnosis a secret. When she's in the hospital for the first time, she downplays it saying she had a fall and tells Ben that it's only "lady things". When Ben asks about her after the latter, she says she's fine.]]
* SickEpisode: [[spoiler: It turns out that the granny has cancer.]]
* ASingleTear: In the 22nd chapter, Ben cries one after his parents say "Contempt" as the cherry on top. The dance competition didn't go good for Ben, if y'all were wondering.
* TechnologicallyBlindElders: Neither Granny nor the Queen know what "Googling" is.
* ToiletHumour:
** One of the details of history Ben likes is people getting red-hot pokers up their butts.
** Granny farting is a running joke.
** Granny uses "Big hairy bums!" as an exclamation.
** Ben and Granny swim up a sewer pipe and end up "smelling of poo-poo".
** There is one joke about a lord burping.
** Granny claims that she once stole a diamond ring, swallowed it, and pooped it out.
* TheTopicOfCancer: [[spoiler: When Granny reveals she has cancer, Ben is instantly afraid for her life and eventually, she does die.]]
* UnnamedParent: We never find out the names of Ben's parents or Granny.
** Subverted in the BBC Made-for-TV film Adaption for Ben's parents, when they were given the names "Mike" and "Linda".
