* AbandonTheDisabled: At the end of the first book, [[spoiler:Dean, Astrid, and Chloe are left behind when the others leave the store, because they have type-O blood, and therefore are susceptible to the HatePlague outside.]]
* AlcoholicParent: Max mentions that most other kids' parents probably don't drink as much as his parents do.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: The book dances around saying that Sahalia and Josie are black, but repeatedly mentions their brown skin and curly hair.
* AttemptedRape: [[spoiler:Sahalia is almost raped by Robbie.]]
* BoomHeadshot: Towards the end of the first book, [[spoiler:Robbie gets shot in the head after the older kids catch him trying to have sex with Sahalia.]]
* FromTheMouthsOfBabes: Max cheerfully volunteers a lot of inappropriate stories about his very colorful family.
* HatePlague: The MORS compounds that got leaked into the air cause anyone with type-O blood to go berserk. When Dean gets exposed to the compound, the narration suddenly deviates from his usual dry descriptions to ranting about how he wants to kill everything and everyone.
* HolierThanThou: Batiste drives everyone nuts with his very religious opinions.
* JerkJock: Brayden has been bullying Dean for years.
* NaturalDisasterCascade: The series opens with a volcanic eruption triggering a megatsunami that ravages the U.S. East Coast, which in turn causes a violent hailstorm in Monument, Colorado. It's shortly followed by an 8.2 earthquake which causes further disaster.
* PostApocalypticDog: Towards the end of the first book, the kids are gifted with a dog, Luna.
* SexStartsStoryStops: ''Sky on Fire'' contains a scene where Dean and Astrid spontaneously have sex, mere hours after she made it clear to him that she wasn't interested in sleeping with him. The in-universe explanation is that the two were high on the chemical compounds contaminating the air outside. The sex scene is only mentioned a few more times in the book.
* TeamDad: Dean finds himself forced into this role, as Brayden is too much of an asshole, Jake's too dumb, and Niko has no people skills.
* TeamMom: Josie quickly falls into this role after getting over her shellshock, as it turns out that she's great at dealing with kids.
