* AccidentalKidnapping: Mike and Jimmy's attempts to get Lewis drunk and hungover for game seven ends with the three men blacking out and kidnapping Lewis.
* AsHimself: Quite a few.
** Celtics Hall of Famer Larry Bird, who tells off Mike and Jimmy after he mistakens them for fair-weather fans while trying to get Lewis drunk.
** Also Bill Walton, Marv Albert, Chris Berman and Deion Sanders.
* BadCopIncompetentCop: Officer O'Grady would rather talk sports with Mike than help a man who had his car jacked.
* BigShutUp:
** Long-suffering Jazz coach Kimball gives some to Mike's heckling.
** During the basketball game between Mike and Lewis, both give Jimmy this after being annoyed by his sports commentary.
* {{Blackmail}}: After Lewis manages to free himself and beats Mike at one-on-one basketball, he forces Mike and Jimmy to dress as Jazz fans and cheer for them or he'll squeal about the events.
* TheCasanova: Lewis is a ladies' man who shares stories with the guys and they start to bond a little bit.
* ChildHater: In Lewis's Nike commercial mentioned below, after dunking some balls in baskets and screaming, he ends it with "I don't want to raise your kids. I don't even like kids." Although he does seem to appreciate a compliment given to him by Mike's son when him and his mother find out about the kidnapping.
* CryIntoChest: Jimmy does this for a moment into Mike after being told off by Larry Bird.
* DivideAndConquer: While Mike steps out for a moment, Lewis attempts to do this to Jimmy by saying Mike's a control freak who doesn't care about his friend.
* DirtyCop: Officer Kevin O'Grady supports Mike and Jimmy kidnapping Lewis, but the Celtics lose, he does threaten them with jail time. He also mentioned he planted fake evidence on people.
* DrivenToSuicide: With Jimmy holding Lewis at gunpoint, the latter tries to get into the former's head saying it's pathetic he collects sports memorabilia as the athletes don't think highly of their fans and tries to urge Jimmy to shoot himself but defies it.
* ExactWords: Then end with Mike and Jimmy sneaking into Deion Sanders's hotel room. Mike is reluctant to do so after him and Carol were starting to get along and he promised her he wouldn't interfere with the NBA Finals ever again. Jimmy then says that this is different: it's the NFL season.
* {{Expy}}: Lewis Scott = UsefulNotes/MichaelJordan and Charles Barkley.
* FatAndSkinny: Mike is lanky and slender while Jimmy is chubby.
* FootDraggingDivorcee: Mike's wife is reluctant to divorce him, but commits to it after she discovers he's lost in his sports obsession and almost goes through with it.

* HereWeGoAgain: Mike rekindles his marriage with his wife and promises he won't interfere with the NBA Finals like that again. Come seven months later in the Super Bowl with the Patriots against the Cowboys, Mike and Jimmy kidnap Deion Sanders.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Mike and Jimmy.
* HostageSituation: Mike and Jimmy's plan to get Lewis drunk ended up snowballing into one.
* ICouldaBeenAContender: Mike, a former high school basketball star, feels like he should have had the career Lewis had and is jealous of him, even challenging him to one on one, in which the more athletically superior Lewis dominates over the older and out-of-shape Mike.
* ImNotAHeroIm: A parody is seen in Lewis' Nike commercial, where he says "I am not a hero. A hero fights against injustice. A hero sacrifices for the good of man. He unites, uplifts, and inspires. I'm not a hero. It's my house."
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Mike yells for his drinks after Larry Bird tells him and Jimmy off, thinking they're fair-weather fans.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Lewis Scott is a talented player, but cares less about the team and more about doing commercials. He also blames the game five loss for not being talented enough where he has to carry them rather than [[NeverMyFault missing practice.]]
* JadedWashout: Mike was a star basketball player in high school who lead in rebounds and assists in his senior year. Unfortunately for him, when he took his game to the college level, he only made it three weeks and would end up working as a gym teacher at an elementary school, living through the Celtics and despising Lewis due to jealousy.
* JerkJock: Lewis Scott is the star NBA player, but also a selfish ball-hog and often skips practice. So much so, during the last game in the climax, Coach Kimball benches Lewis, thinking he just skipped practice on his own accord.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** Lewis is an egotistical player, but expresses sympathy saying he doesn't want to see Mike and Jimmy go to jail and after the Jazz win Game 7, rather than ratting them out, calls them friends.
** Also applies to Mike, as his sports obsession has caused a wedge between his wife and son, but he loves his family very much.
* KavorkaMan: Suzy the Hotdog Girl has a crush on Jimmy, who's not exactly a male model. She even toasts his hot dog bun with her curling iron.
* KillItWithFire: At the gas station, Lewis spills gas on Mike's crotch and threatens to burn him with the old Celtics lighter if Jimmy doesn't let him go. Unfortunately for Lewis, the lighter doesn't work. [[labelnote:Explanation]] It actually does, after they all get back in the van. [[/labelnote]]
* LoonyFan: Mike's obsessed with the Celtics to the point it hurt his marriage and is willing to sabotage the other team to help his team win. Jimmy also qualifies as he foregoes fixing a client's toilet just to watch a hockey game and when he's caught and made to do his job, he calls his grandmother to have her hold her phone over the TV just so he can hear the game. Officer O'Grady also qualifies. Heck, even all the Celtics fans can be like this as they tend to be superstitious, even switching seats for the game six and having someone thrown out who is viewed as a bad luck charm.
* MoneyDearBoy: InUniverse. Why Lewis does commercials.
* NoodleIncident: After Mike's wife, Carol, finds out about the kidnapping, Mike comments to Jimmy he hasn't seen her this mad since 1987 when the Celtics lost and he drop-kicked her Chia pet.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: After Lewis force Mike and Jimmy to root for him and wear Jazz jerseys, the Boston fans are upset, but they just say they wear Jazz clothes and cheer them on to jinx the team.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: After their wager mentioned below, Mike and Jimmy make fun of Lewis over his Oscar Meyer commercial. [[HoYay "I'll play one on one with this hot dog any day."]]
* PutMeInCoach: Inverted; after Coach Kimball benches Lewis in the final game, the Jazz struggle and right quickly, Kimball gets second thoughts and puts Lewis back in the game.
* ReallyGetsAround: With Lewis and his stories of many mistresses he tells Mike and Jimmy while in the van.
* SlasherSmile: Right before Mike and Jimmy decide to get Lewis drunk, the latter makes his way into the dance floor just to get into Lewis's face and gives him one, alongside an EvilLaugh.
* SoreLoser: The Celtics fans, especially Mike and Jimmy, don't take it well when their team loses game six. Then inverted in Game 7 with Mike and Jimmy after being forced to cheer the Jazz.
* TemptingFate: While Mike, Jimmy and Lewis watch logging on TV, they comment on how they're doing it for the love of the sport and not for the money. Jimmy says "You don't see Big Jim Fulton hawking chainsaws". Guess what commercial aired after that comment.
* TheBet: At one point Mike and Jimmy make a wager with Lewis to scroll through all 125 channels of Jimmy's TV and if they don't find one commercial Lewis is in, they'll let him go. Unfortunately for Lewis, they stumble upon an Oscar Meyer commercial with him, one he doesn't seem [[OldShame too fond of.]]
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: During the game six, when a player tells Lewis to pass more, the latter responds "Why don't you worry about your own game, bitch".
