It backfires spectacularly when Celestia and Luna need to get the Elements and Celestia finds disarming the trap is significantly harder than she thought.

It's implied only the princesses and the mane six have such devices due to them still being highly experimental, but even then Queen Chrysalis somehow managed to steal a TV and VCR for herself.
