[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14202814/1/Nine-Minutes Nine Minutes]] is a ''Manga/OnePiece'' FanFiction written by serpentguy on Fanfiction.net.

During the final fight with Crocodile, Luffy makes a mistake and ends up dead. His heart stops beating for over nine minutes, before he is finally resuscitated. Who knew what a difference those nine minutes would make?

A warning to any who would read it: not only is it a Luffy/Harem story, but "DarkerAndEdgier" barely ''begins'' to describe it; not even [[Anime/BaronOmatsuriAndTheSecretIsland the sixth One Piece film]], the darkest piece of work in the entire franchise, comes close to rivaling Nine Minutes. And it's a true testament to the author's skill that despite that, the fic is still (mostly) faithful to ''One Piece'' and its characters.

The last update was in 2015, and three years later, in 2018, it was abandoned by the author, who simply posted "Won't be continued" on his profile. Another four years later, all his stories were deleted, including this one, and the account was closed. In 2023, however, his former editor managed to recover, and re-upload the fanfic.

!!Examples
* ActuallyADoombot: The crew beat Doflaming after Skypiea only for him to be revealed as his Black Knight technique (which creates a clone out of string).
* AFatherToHisMen: Smoker's reasons for wanting to kill the Strawhats instead of capture them? It's the only way to save Tashigi from being charged with treason as a pirate sympathizer.
* AGodAmI: Enel.
** AGodIAmNot: [[spoiler:Luffy]].
* AboveGoodAndEvil: [[spoiler: Mr Rumble claims to be, because he's lightning incarnate. Lightning isn't good or evil, lightning just wants to ''burn'']].
* AdaptationalBadass:
** Vivi ends up [[spoiler:being the one who eats Crocodile’s [[SandBlasted Sand-Sand fruit]] after it went back into circulation and being able to use Conqueror’s Haki]].
** Nami takes up sword fighting.
** Usopp ends up [[spoiler:eating the Toad-Toad fruit]].
* AintTooProudToBeg: [[spoiler:Enel's]] last words are how he doesn't want to die.
* AmbiguouslyGay: According to Tashigi, [[spoiler: Admiral Akainu]]. Telling him by Den Den Mushi, [[spoiler:during her own trial for treason]].
* ApologeticAttacker: [[spoiler:Pagaya, unsurprisingly.]]
* ApplianceDefenestration: The side story of chapter 33 ends with the engineers throwing their table through a window.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Wiper is asked by the former chief what he plans to do when the war is finally over. Wiper doesn't have an answer. [[spoiler:Until he decides to join the Strawhats at the end of the arc]].
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: Luffy's suggestions to the shipwrights for the crew's new ship are mostly simple practical ideas: a cushion for his favorite seat on the figurehead, tables that can be bolted down in storms, hammocks with adjustable heights, and he wants the ship to fly.
* AscendedExtra: Vivi due to her becoming a Straw Hat here.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Isaac's ultimate use of his Devil Fruit leaves a person too confused to even remember what they're doing. It also gives him a massive migraine in seconds.
** Infusing an inanimate object with any Devil Fruit that isn't a Zoan turns it completely passive. A sword is infused with a Devil Fruit that allows the user to disable a person's senses but which sense is chosen completely at random.
* AxeCrazy: Enel, Marcus (even his coworkers are ''terrified'' of him). Lucci applies too, if his thoughts in Chapter 34 are to be believed. [[spoiler:As he says himself, he could have solved their mission in "half a day of blood, fire and enjoyment" by torturing Iceburg into releasing Pluton's plans, then pretty much killing everyone on the island - but Robin - before burning it to the ground and bringing the woman to Enies Lobby for her execution.]] He's just professional enough to hide it.
* TheBadGuyWins: Subverted. It begins like this, but Luffy ends up killing Crocodile.
* BadassBoast: "I hunt ''Logias'' for a ''living''."
** Luffy's "I've got a god to kill" qualifies.
** Hamilton's little line about being an Anti-Logia Devil Fruit user.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Hina, as in canon, as well as Isaac of the Devil Fruit Hunters.
** [[spoiler: Mr. Rumble, AKA the Rumble Rumble Fruit's human form.]]
* BaitAndSwitch: [[spoiler:Gan Fall]] and not Luffy eats the Metal Metal Fruit. [[spoiler: Then after Gan Fall's death, Luffy refuses to eat the fruit and instead force feeds it to Enel]].
* BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind: [[spoiler:Luffy is on the receiving end of a [[CurbStompBattle very quick beatdown]] from Mr Rumble.]]
* BerserkButton: [[spoiler: Mr. Rumble]] seems to enjoy pushing Luffy's. With a sledgehammer.
** Luffy manages to accidentally punch both of his, before even knowing he exists, by [[spoiler:forcing him to share a body with the Metal-Metal Demon whom he hates and taking residence in the remnants of the Gum-Gum Devil's "house", whom he hates ''even more.'']]
* {{BFG}}: Wiper's ''God Slayer''. That thing is a massive bazooka filled with what appears to be ''hundreds'' of various Dials, making it a polyvalent and insanely dangerous weapon, although it is much bulkier than any other Shandian weapon.
** When the ship is raided by Franky's 'family' Wiper brings out his bazooka, it is explicitly stated his is three times bigger than any of theirs.
** Wiper asks for a big cannon in chapter 33's side story, the ship artist eventually draws what is described as a 'cannon with sails', Wiper says they now have an idea of how big he wants the cannon to be.
* BigEater: Despite no longer being a rubber man, Luffy maintains his appetite. Since he can't eat as much, he instead eats more often.
* BlatantLies: The Strawhats are blamed for everything Crocodile did in Alabasta while Crocodile is hailed as the "noble Warlord who tried to stop them".
** Tashigi claims to be guilty of crimes she couldn't possibly have committed to mock the Marines' habit of using scapegoats to cover up their own failures.
** Tsura "accidentally" disconnects all the transponders before Akainu can call for Tashigi's arrest.
* BloodKnight: Wiper. So much so, he's ''disappointed'' when the war is over.
** [[spoiler:Mr. Rumble.]]
* BondOneLiner: [[spoiler:Usopp]] gives one after shooting a mercenary with his own grenade launcher.
* BoringButPractical: Most of Luffy's requests for the new ship are rather simple overall: a cushion for his favorite seat, tables that can be bolted down, etc. ''Most''.
* BotheringByTheBook: Smoker can't arrest Tashigi because he's currently been relieved of all authority.
* BrickJoke: In an omake, Usopp experiments with the Devil Fruits they've captured and accidentally fuses a zoan fruit with their kettle. A few chapters later, Nami warns [[spoiler:Tashigi]] not to open a barred door as it's where they keep the kettle.
* BroughtDownToBadass: Luffy; the near-death experience he had at the start was so close to "Dead" that it counted for the Gum-Gum Fruit, so it reincarnated and he's a Rubber Man no longer. As a result, he ''is'' weaker than most of the people he faces for the next arc, but he still retains his insane strength and resilience.
* BullyingADragon: Three members of the Franky Family try to capture Luffy and Vivi, apparently not realizing that someone with bounties of [[spoiler:350 million and 100 million respectively]] would have ''earned'' them.
* TheButcher: Luffy's new epithet is "The Devil".
* CasualDangerDialogue: When the Foxy Pirates try to rob them, the Revolutionaries talk about how ridiculous it is.
* ChickMagnet: Luffy, obviously.
* ClickHello: [[spoiler:Usopp]] does this to one of the mercenaries with his own grenade launcher.
* CombatSadomasochist: Lets just say that Dan Marcus makes [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Zaraki Kenpachi]] look perfectly balanced and sane.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Vivi calls out Nami for taking advantage of [[spoiler:the Skypieans worship of Luffy]] by telling them [[spoiler:God]] demanded a new dress, a purse, some cute shoes, and tangerine scented perfume. Nami concedes and tells them the perfume doesn't have to be tangerine scented.
* ConfusionFu: Nami realizes that if she doesn't know what the dials she's using do, then neither does Ohm when she attacks with them.
* ContinuityNod: Even after losing his Devil Fruit, Luffy is still a rather poor swimmer as he ate it before learning how to swim properly.
* CrapsackWorld: It's even worse than the original One Piece World
** We have privateers who are basically "Pirates with a badge". So long as they don't commit obvious acts of piracy they're left alone
** Smoker is more ruthless in this timeline than he originally was.
** The revolutionaries aren't shown to be as clear cut good guys i.e. They work with Monet and Caesar Clown.
** The Strawhats themselves. Remember in the manga where they didn't kill anyone? Well here they do.
** CP9 is shown to be much more ruthless instead of just stated being so.
* CrazyPrepared: Marcus wears a vest and underclothes made with fibers from a rare wood that's considered the most buoyant material in the world, just in case he falls into the ocean.
** "Crazy Eyes" carries a Seastone dagger despite such a weapon's most likely horrendous cost. [[spoiler: And keeps a smaller one, made of Seastone too, in his boot.]]
** Gan Fall gathers up every grape on Skypiea so that [[spoiler:the Metal-Metal Fruit will reincarnate into one of them when he dies]].
* CripplingOverspecialization: Averted. Sanji declines the chance to eat a devil fruit as he thinks it's a bad idea to have too many people on the ship who can't swim.
* CutHimselfShaving: [[spoiler:Aisa]] claims the mercenary Wiper had been fighting that's currently lying in a pool of blood "tripped and knocked herself out".
* DarkerAndEdgier: It begins with Luffy ''dying'', for Pete's sake.
* DarkestHour: It will be difficult to top Water Seven in sheer darkness: [[spoiler: Usopp is almost dead, Franky -who was responsible for Usopp's injury- was killed by an out-of-control Luffy, ''Luffy lost control of his Devil Fruit'', Robin breaks up with him, as a result of his depression ''so does Nami'', Iceburg is about to be murdered...'''''And the new ship is filled with A THOUSAND TONS OF SEASTONE-LACED HIGH-YIELD DYNAMITE''''' that Lucci detonates while there's hundreds of people around it. And Robin is forced to watch.]]
* DatingCatwoman: Inverted with Hina, a Marine, and Sanji have this sort of relationship.
* DavidVersusGoliath: An almost literal example when Conis fights Yama.
* DeadFic: It was last updated on October 13th, 2015.
* DeathByAdaptation: Crocodile, [[spoiler:Gan Fall, Pagaya, Enel, the Foxy Pirates, and Franky]].
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:Dan Marcus.]]
* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler:Tashigi]].
* {{Determinator}}: Luffy, considering it is never mentioned in any chapter that he is fully healed, it's probably correct to assume Luffy has gone nearly ''two dozen'' chapters ''half dead'', this after coming the closest thing to death there is but stopping just short.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler:Tashigi, it probably isn't a good idea to call Akainu gay.]]
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: Unconsciously done by Haraden through most of Chapter 31. [[spoiler:Ultimately leads to Luffy killing him - though he intended to do so anyway.]]
* DisabilitySuperpower: Zoro's complete lack of direction helps against an enemy who messes with your sense of direction.
** Later, [[spoiler:having been robbed of most of his senses allows Zoro to fully awaken Observation Haki]].
* DisasterDominoes: [[spoiler:The explosion Lucci set off managed to damage part of Water 7's foundation.]] If part of it goes, the entire place will follow soon after.
* DrowningMySorrows: Iceburg after [[spoiler:Franky's death]]
* EarlyBirdCameo: [[spoiler:Rob Lucci]] is mentioned in chapter 27 as being Robin's first... pretty much everything. [[spoiler:It's a huge consolation prize that her most recent is ''Luffy'', who's pretty much [[YouAreWorthHell the ultimate]] [[TrueCompanions prize]] [[ChickMagnet for the female crew members]].]]
** [[spoiler:Monet appears in chapter 28]].
** The captain of the privateer ship the crew raids in chapters 30 and 31 turns out to be [[spoiler:the man who sold the Boa sisters into slavery. The money made from that one sale was used to start his entire slave business; he still has their doll as a memento of his ''good fortune'']].
* EpicFail: Chopper tries to apply reindeer courtship to human relationships as part of being Sanji's wingman. Turns out, headbutting a girl doesn't help getting her interested in you.
* ExactWords: One mercenary claims he hasn't eaten a Devil Fruit and he hasn't. His ''sword'' however has.
** Said sword disables one sense each time it cuts someone. However, this applies to more than the five main senses. It also applies to things like hand-eye coordination, sense of pain, and timing.
* ExplainExplainOhCrap: Iceburg is in the middle of talking about how impossible it is that the Galley La company misplaced a thousand tonnes of wood because of the people who check it when he realizes that those people (Kalifa, Kaku, and Lucci) must be traitors.
* ExtraOredinary: [[spoiler:Gan Fall]] after eating the Metal Metal Fruit.
* FatalFlaw: Greed for Isaac and Berrit. [[spoiler:Usopp defeats them by throwing the Devil Fruits they had collected off their boat, leaving them too busy trying to catch them to protect themselves.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: Isaac seems reasonable enough until he learns the fruit they wanted back was already consumed [[spoiler:by Vivi]].
* ForTheEvulz: Enel's reason for [[spoiler:destroying the Golden Bell]] is simply because he can.
* ForcedToWatch: Lucci waits to [[spoiler:detonate a massive bomb]] until Robin is close enough to witness it.
* GadgeteerGenius: Conis is very skilled at working with dials and Wiper is a genius when it comes to making weapons.
* GrievousHarmWithABody: Wiper uses two enemies as nun-chucks at one point.
* HeroicBSOD: Comedic example. In chapter 32, Sanji goes into an impressive level of denial when he learns that [[spoiler:Luffy has three girlfriends. At the same time. And who are perfectly okay with the arrangement. He bangs head against the mast, faints, and then starts JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope.]]
** Iceburg enters a more serious one after [[spoiler:Luffy kills Franky]]. He acknowledges that [[spoiler:Franky]] was in the wrong but still wants someone to pay.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Luffy manages to stab Crocodile after the latter's sandstorm unleashes all the dance powder, causing a massive downpour.
* HollywoodHealing: So very averted with [[spoiler:Usopp]]. After being impaled, he has to be put on life support, might need a lung transplant and lost a kidney.
* HonorAmongThieves: The Pirate's Laws act as rules of engagement.
* HowDoIShootWeb: Vivi spends some time first trying to figure out what her new powers are, then later learning how to use them.
* IJustWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Robin plans [[spoiler:on adding Nami to her and Luffy's relationship]], to keep Luffy from missing her when she inevitably has to leave the crew. [[GenreBlind Fat chance.]]
* INeedAFreakingDrink: The engineers quickly upgrade from coffee to liquor when the Strawhat's tell them what they want on their ship.
* IdiotBall: Robin has it rolling in the palm of her hand (although to be fair she has plenty good reasons to have trust issues) for believing Luffy will simply either abandon or forget about her [[spoiler:despite being his first...everything. And we do mean ''everything.'']] '''Monkey "Die-before-I-let-my-friends-be-hurt" Luffy.'''
** Sanji leads two women who clearly are interested in the crew's massive gold supply straight to it after they claim they've "always wanted to make love on a giant block of gold".
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:Usopp ends up impaled with a chisel after Franky's jackhammer explodes]].
* ImprovisedWeapon: After [[spoiler:Luffy steals his jitte]], Smoker uses a baton with a pair of seastone handcuffs attached to the end.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: The first time [[spoiler:Mr. Rumble]] shows true approval of Luffy is after the latter [[spoiler:electrocutes Franky]].
* {{Irony}}: When Vivi [[spoiler:decides to join the Strawhats]], Cobra offers her an unknown Devil Fruit he just bought ([[FridgeBrilliance explaining how the Falcon and Jackal fruits have been used by their strongest fighters for generations]]). It turns out to be [[spoiler:Crocodile's Sand-Sand Fruit.]]
** [[spoiler: Haraden (to Luffy): Any pirate that went there (i.e., betray the Pirate Laws) would be no better than a goddamn ''Revolutionary.'' ]]
** After years of drought, Alabasta faces rainfall so heavy it's in danger of flooding.
* ItOnlyWorksOnce: While [[spoiler:falling off Skypiea]], Conis activates a device to [[spoiler:make the Going Merry fly]] but remarks that because of the unique circumstances, they'll never be able to do it again.
* KangarooCourt: The tribunal for Smoker, Tashigi, and Hina is blatantly unfair from the start such as them not being allowed attorneys or even speaking in their defense.
* KickTheDog: Enel [[spoiler:reduces the Golden Bell to a lump of molten gold. [[HopeSpot Right after it rung for the first time in 400 years]].]]
* KilledOffForReal: Oh boy. Contrary to the original work, people die in ''Nine Minutes''. Crocodile, [[spoiler: Enel, all 3 of the Devil Hunters (see RasputinianDeath for Marcus), Haraden the five-eighths giant...]] Being on the opposite side from the Straw Hats is a BAD idea in this story. [[spoiler:Good guys like Gan Fall and Pagaya aren't safe, either.]]
** [[spoiler:It is also very likely that none of the Foxy Pirates survived their encounter with Hamilton. Chapter 34 reveals that at least Porsche survived.]]
** [[spoiler:Franky is electrocuted and impaled for nearly killing Usopp]].
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Smoker realizes at one point he [[spoiler:no longer has any hope of beating Luffy in a fight and simply lets him go.]]
* LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain: The ending of the first omake in chapter 32 after [[spoiler:Zoro sees Sanji trying on Luffy's clothes, after finding out their captain is dating Nami, Vivi, ''and'' Robin.]]
** Zoro has this reaction when he has to be led ''by the hand'' out of a swamp by Chopper.
* LoveTriangle: Luffy is unaware he's caught in one with [[spoiler:Vivi and Nami.]] They are both aware of the other's attraction for him, which badly sours their relationship, but [[spoiler:they didn't know he was already in a secret relationship with Robin. Nami took it ''badly'']].
* MarryThemAll: A variation. Luffy has three women on his crew who have feelings for him. Knowing full well that he'll [[spoiler:end his relationship with her if he realizes it's hurting his other two friends]] Robin quickly engineers a solution -- he dates all of them at the same time.
* MuggingTheMonster: The Franky family tries to rob some members of the Strawhat crew that don't have bounties. It doesn't end well for them.
** The Revolutionaries' reaction to the Foxy Pirates trying to raid them is an amused, "That's adorable."
* MundaneUtility: The Soap Soap Fruit gets fused to a mop to make cleaning easier.
* MyDeathIsJustTheBeginning: [[spoiler:Gan Fall's]] death is part of a complex plan to [[spoiler:defeat Enel]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Franky stares in horror after [[spoiler:Usopp is impaled when Franky's jackhammer explodes]].
* MythologyGag: One of the fruits the Devil Fruit hunters have captured is the Samu Samu Fruit, a gag fruit Oda made up that causes the user to only speak in [[IncrediblyLamePun puns]].
** The existence of [[spoiler:Mr. Rumble]] is based off a canon rumor that [[spoiler:Devil Fruits contain demons that fight if they're in close proximity]].
%%* NeckSnap: Luffy to Bellamy. [[spoiler:Though the latter survived, barely, due to his Devil Fruit.]]
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Luffy's "fight" against the Franky Family after they [[spoiler:nearly kill Usopp]].
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Luffy is developing this mentality. When Bellamy insulted Nami, Luffy didn't punch him out, he snapped Bellamy's neck.
* NoPlaceForMeThere: Wiper leaves Skypiea because he can't stand all the peace and wants to engage in more war.
* NoSell: Marcus' Shred Shred Fruit protects him from most harm by tearing to shred anything that comes close to him. It even works on energy attacks, somehow.
** It doesn't technically 'work' on energy attacks, he just weakens their effects on him by shredding the atoms the energy is traveling through, doesn't work properly though.
* [[spoiler:NotQuiteFlight: The Going Merry uses its dials to glide down from Skypiea to the ocean]].
* OfficialCouple: Luffy will have a harem, as indicated by the story summary, and so far it seems to consist of Robin, Nami, and Vivi, who all have feelings for him. [[spoiler:By chapter 31, he's dating all three at the same time. Also, judging by his conversation with the captain of the West Viper Brigade, it's fairly clear that Boa Hancock is going to be joining them]].
** Sanji is ''implied'' to have had a tryst with Hina, though it's unknown if anything will come out of it.
** Zoro fully admits to having a thing for Tashigi. [[spoiler:They end up more-or-less a couple in the Skypiea arc, and this along with her disillusionment with the Marines ultimately causes her to defect to the Straw Hats after the events of the tribunal]].
* OhCrap:
** Enel has one when [[spoiler:Luffy force-feeds him a second Devil Fruit]].
** Smoker has one in chapter 22 after realizing that [[spoiler:that he can't beat Luffy anymore, since the latter has not only eaten the Rumble Rumble Fruit, but has also mastered his haki]].
** Robin has a borderline FreakOut in chapter 33 when [[spoiler:she meets Lucci again]].
* OneManArmy: During the first part of the battle royale on Skypiea, Luffy's fight is simply "Luffy vs. Everyone".
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Everybody is stunned when Vivi suggests that [[spoiler:they kill the West Viper Brigade crew.]]
** Aisa is surprised to see Wiper who meets Montblanc Cricket, the descendant of Noland who was best friend with his ancestor of Kalgara in the past, and gets along with Cricket amicably. She explains to Zoro that Wiper tends to make enemies out of everyone he meets.
* PapaWolf: [[spoiler:Pagaya]].
* PetTheDog: Underplayed with [[spoiler:Lucci, towards Iceburg. He actually likes the man and seems to somewhat regret having to betray him. He's still manipulating the Galley-La's stock holders into ''commanding his murder'' at the exact same time he reflects on it.]] But hey, [[SarcasmMode it's the thought that counts.]]
* PoisonousPerson: [[spoiler:Or duck rather]].
* PreMortemOneLiner: Luffy's "When I say it's over...'''Then it's over'''." to Marcus [[spoiler:before pretty much vaporizing his skull]].
* PsychicStatic: During the climax of her fight with Ohm, Nami thinks about her crew to keep him from realizing she's creating a tornado.
* PsychoForHire: Dan Marcus, the Devil Fruit Hunter. He even admits to have chosen this career because it allowed him to kill people without getting in trouble with the Marines.
* RasputinianDeath: [[spoiler:Marcus, OH SO MUCH. It took several chapters, and massive blows from Wiper, Enel, Luffy, Vivi, Pagaya and Luffy again to do him in -- surviving millions of volts, brutal beatings, being torn to shreds by a sandstorm and even losing half of his body to '''six Reject Dials''', an attack that ''vaporized'' everything else around him. Even reduced to little more than a head and heart, he's still raving about murdering everyone around him.]]
** [[spoiler:While he dies with a single attack,]] Haraden the five-eighth giant captain of the ''Mary Elisabeth'' takes an unholy amount of punishment from the whole crew (minus Luffy) before the latter ends up knocking him up with an attack with "the power of an apocalypse". Before that, he was [[spoiler: ground with sand, bathed in Carue's acidic breath, cut, kicked, shot in the eyes, shot with a bazooka, electrocuted by the Clima-Sword...]]
* RedBaron: After the Skypiea arc, several of the crew get new bounties and new epithets.
** Monkey D. Luffy "The Devil"
** Roronoa Zoro "The Demon Hunter"
** Nefertari Vivi "Desert Princess"
** "Renegade" Tashigi
** "Weather Witch" Nami
** "Monster" Usopp.
* RefugeInAudacity: During Smoker's, Hina's, and Tashigi's tribunal, Tashigi boldly (and falsely) claims to have been a spy for the Strawhat crew for the last five years, all the while sabotaging anyone who tried to stand against them.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Luffy unleashing the power of [[spoiler:the Rumble-Rumble Fruit]] after the Franky Family [[spoiler:almost kills Usopp on accident.]]
** The rest of the Straw Hats relentlessly hunt them down in the days following.
* SapientShip: The Going Merry has a water spirit inhabiting it. It's later revealed to look just like [[spoiler:a young Kaya]].
* SchmuckBait: [[spoiler:Aisa]] claims this about leaving her alone in a room full of Devil Fruits she was told not to touch.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Tashigi's reasons for both saving the Strawhats at Alabasta along with ordering medical attention for them and later letting Zoro go. In both cases, she insists they're good people who don't deserve to die.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Several Members of the Franky Family flee Water 7 after [[spoiler:the disastrous attempt to rob the Straw Hats]].
* SeenItAll: While not quite to that point yet, Nami points out what it says about her life that a [[spoiler:giant toad carrying a giant duck]] isn't even that weird anymore.
* SerialEscalation: The crew's specifications for their ship get increasingly outrageous with each crew member that visits the customer care team, driving them into a drunken stupor. Then, in the morning, Luffy appears and his requests are ''far'' more reasonable. Just when the engineers are about to cry in relief, Luffy admits there is one thing he wants for the ship to do: [[spoiler:fly]].
* ShockAndAwe: Enel, obviously. [[spoiler:Luffy too, after the former dies and he eats the regrown Rumble-Rumble Fruit]].
** [[spoiler: Mr. Rumble, the spirit ''of'' the Rumble Rumble Fruit.]]
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:Mr. Rumble's]] is described as showing nothing but teeth.
* SmugSnake: Enel again, Isaac of the Devil Fruit Hunters too.
* SpectacularSpinning: One of the mercenaries at Water 7 ate a Devil Fruit that lets her turn things into spinning disks, including herself.
* StealthPun: Vivi gains the epithet of Desert Princess. While it does fit with [[spoiler:her new devil fruit]], she also is a princess of a desert kingdom.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Chopper has this reaction when he and [[NoSenseOfDirection Zoro]] have to find their way out of a maze-like swamp.
* TookALevelInBadass: Everyone. Luffy, [[spoiler:learning all three Colors of Haki, and figuring out Moon Step, through sheer force of will and eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit]]. Vivi, [[spoiler:eating and slowly mastering the Sand-Sand Fruit along with awakening Conqueror's Haki]]. Nami, [[spoiler:training in swordsmanship under Zoro and stealing Ohm's sword]]. Usopp, [[spoiler:eating the Toad Toad Fruit (a poisonous model)]], ''Carue'' eating a devil fruit...
** Luffy actually takes so many that [[spoiler:at the end of the Skypiea arc, despite being so injured he needs a crutch and Robin's help to get around, Smoker acknowledges he no longer has a chance against Luffy.]]
** Special mention goes to [[spoiler:Pagaya,]] who nearly becomes a MemeticBadass despite being a minor character in canon.
** More recently [[spoiler:Zoro]] has awakened Observation Haki and [[spoiler:Aisa]] ate a Devil Fruit.
* ToThePain: Hamilton is very descriptive of what he will do to Foxy after they have finished shooting him, with his ''friends offering areas to shoot'' because they know it won't take.
* TrainingFromHell: Zoro is a bad teacher and Nami is a bad student so her training is mostly them sparring (read: Zoro kicking her ass until Nami figures out what to do).
* TranquilFury: When hearing Haraden speak about his slavery business, Luffy is completely and utterly calm, even when he [[spoiler:uses his powers to paralyze the man and push him overboard.]]
* TwinThreesomeFantasy: Sanji, in his desperate need to prove to himself that he can outdo Luffy, ends up [[spoiler:revealing the warehouse holding the ''massive'' amount of gold held by the crew to the Franky Family]] after meeting Mozu and Kiwi.
* UnkemptBeauty: Luffy notes multiple times that a woman isn't wearing makeup, looks an awful mess, and is the most beautiful he's ever seen them.
* VillainousBreakdown: Enel's begins while facing [[spoiler: Gan Fall after the latter ate the Metal-Metal Fruit]]. It goes downhill from here.
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:Mr. Rumble]].
* WeakButSkilled: Most of the Water 7 mercenaries are (relatively) weak but make up for it with group tactics and utilizing enemy weaknesses.
* WhamEpisode: Chapter 35 big time.
* WhamLine:

** One of the Water 7 mercenaries threatens to kill Aisa. Then later reveals she's getting paid to kill her anyway.
