''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11568253/1/Supernova Supernova]]'' is a ''Manga/OnePiece'' AlternateUniverse FanFiction by ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1408784/Primordial-Vortex Primordial Vortex]]'' (who also wrote ''Fanfic/TheEmeraldPhoenix'', ''Fanfic/TheBlackEmperor'' and ''Fanfic/LegendOfTheMonkeyGod'') where Luffy [[FandomSpecificPlot ate a different Devil Fruit]], specifically the Enten-Enten no Mi (Sun-Sun Fruit). As a result, Luffy gets some extra training from Shanks so he doesn't accidentally incinerate someone. Follow Luffy's journey as a Sun man as he sails to become the Pirate King.

----
!!This fic contains examples of the following tropes, in addition to those already present in the source material:
* AbledInTheAdaptation: Shanks has both of his arms due to Luffy not being held hostage here.
* AccidentalMurder: [[spoiler:Wapol's leg giving out at the wrong time causes Chopper to accidentally tear out his throat.]]
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Downplayed, while Luffy has his normally slender build, he's notably taller standing at 6 feet even over his canonical 5'8.
* AdaptationalBadass:
** Luffy knows the Rokushiki due to training from Garp. He is knowledgeable about it enough to teach the other Straw Hats them. [[spoiler:It's implied in chapter 7 that with his knowledge of Life Return, he also knows [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Rokuougan]] (Six King Gun). Chapter 13 confirms it.]]
** Nami's training in Rokushiki lets her develop skills to fight early on instead of just hiding and looting after all is said and done.
** Shanks still has both arms since he didn't have to save Luffy from the Lord of the Coast.
** Implied with Ace, who has a bounty of ''900'' million, when in canon at the time of his death his bounty was only 550 million.
** Usopp vs the Kung-Fu Dugong. In the original story, the fight was not even shown. between one panel and the next, Usopp was bloodied on the floor. In this story, he managed a YouAreAlreadyDead on the Dugong. It didn't work, but he actually got into a fight instead of being off-screened.
** Vivi proves to have [[spoiler:Conqueror's Haki]] during the battle at Alubarna. Not only that, but together with Nami she manages to actually injure Crocodile himself, defeats her own pair of Baroque Works agents, and destroys the city busting bomb Crocodile prepared on her own at the cost of shredding all the muscles in one of her legs.
** In a non-crew example, Mr. 2 (who already gave Sanji a good fight in the canon story) fights Nami and after seeing her using Soru, immediately manages to copy his own version of the technique. Similarly, Mr. 1 is able to completely ignore Sanji's Tekkai with one of his techniques.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance:
** Nami, using Geppou and Soru as a basis for it like Sanji, is the one to develop Blue Walk a full ''19'' arcs before it's canon debut. Though it's not stated whether she's in a vertical running position or a horizontal swimming one.
** Nami's Clima-Tact first appears after Arlong's defeat.
** Robin similarly is convinced to stay with the crew all the way from Whiskey Peak, and therefore is present for both Little Garden and Drum Island.
** Zoro's Rengoku Oni Giri appears in the Alabasta arc, when he's fighting Smoker. Just like Blue Walk above, this is long before its canon debut.
** Sanji's Diable Jambe appears in the Alabasta arc instead of later during the Enies Lobby arc.
** Doubling as a LateArrivalSpoiler, [[spoiler:The Nefertari family's status as bearers of the Will of D., along with the secret of the Poneglyphs as well as Nefertari D. Lili's letter]], are revealed, 19 arcs and little over 800 chapters before canon.
** The first Vice Admirals of the story (Doberman and Onigumo) arrive to [[spoiler:take out the Straw Hats after Alabasta. They don't last too long, but give the crew the hardest fight yet before going down.]]
* AdaptationalIntelligence: Make no mistake, Luffy isn't going to be winning any awards anytime soon, however he's smarter here in the sense that he's able to read people really well as well as being able to remember people's name this time around.
* AdaptationalSexuality: Due to Oda's strict NoHuggingNoKissing stance throughout the manga's run, most of the Straw Hat's sexuality has been nebulous with Usopp, Chopper, and especially Brook and Sanji being the known exceptions due to at least being attracted to women (or female Minks in Chopper's case). This fic however, like most that involve [[ChasteHero Luffy]] getting into a relationship this trope is almost necessary. [[spoiler:Nami herself has shown no known attraction to any gender if she even has any, but here is a bisexual woman.]]
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange: Since he ate a different Devil Fruit, Luffy has ThePowerOfTheSun instead of being a RubberMan.
* AdaptationDeviation: Chapter 6 implies [[spoiler:that Luffy is aware of who Dragon is and what his relationship with the Most Wanted Criminal in History is.]]
* AdaptationNameChange:
** Miss Valentine's real name is Valerie rather than Mikita, as her canon name's reveal came long after the chapter's publishing. The author expresses his frustration in the notes of Chapter 9, as she got a canon name over a decade after being relevant in the story AFTER he'd already written a chapter or two with her in-story name.
** Nami and Zoro's [[RedBaron epithets]] are changed from canon with Nami gaining "[[WeatherManipulation Storm Empress]]" And Zoro gaining "[[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Demon of Three Swords]]". Luffy averts this by keeping his "Strawhat" epithet.
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: Because Nami is now in a committed and intimate relationship with Luffy, she's less amused by Sanji's overt flirting and rather than finding it useful for delicious treats instead finds it annoying and continuously tries to let him know she's not interested.
* ArbitrarilyLargeBankAccount: After looting Arlong Park and Nezumi's base, the Straw Hats have more money than the Going Merry can safely transport.
* ArtisticLicenseLinguistics: While the author claims that the Japanese name of the Sun-Sun fruit ("Enten-Enten no Mi") fits the usual structure of two repeating syllables, the "n" is considered it's own syllable, the "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_phonology#Moraic_nasal Moraic Nasal]]", and has it's own [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N_(kana) separate letter]] when written, so it results in 4 syllables actually being repeated (E-N-TE-N).
* AnArmAndALeg:
** Pearl's arm is burned off when he tries to punch Luffy.
** Luffy burns off Crocodile's arm in their fight.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Nami gives off shades of this as after more women join the crew, Nami implies she'd be up for "some fun" with them along [[AThreesomeIsHot Luffy at the same time]] and then during the Drum arc chapter, she pecks Robin and Vivi on the head for luck in getting treated. No one knows what to make of these actions. [[spoiler:As of chapter 10, this is no longer ambiguous with her expressing an interest in Vivi.]]
* ApologeticAttacker: Kizaru is truly upset about being forced to [[spoiler:execute Smoker]] but states orders are orders.
* AscendedExtra: WordOfGod states that there will be several more for an expanded crew, but just to start:
** Miss Valentine - one of the assassins from the Alabasta Arc - joins the crew as a chocolatier after her introduction and subsequent [[MistreatmentInducedBetrayal resignation from Baroque Works]]. One of her first big actions was [[HomeRunHitter hitting Wapol with her parasol so hard he became a twinkle in the sky]]
* AssKicksYou: Miss Valentine's 10 Thousand [[MeteorMove Kilogram Press]] is basically her dive bombing rear first into the enemy, though it has a tendency to fail as Wapol is so tough she actually breaks her tailbone doing this despite having hit solid earth before without injury. The first time she tried this was on Luffy and, because of [[TrainingFromHell Garp training him more seriously]], all she did was land on him in a similar position to a game of pool chicken, she immediately surrenders after seeing him perfectly unharmed despite being in a ''crater a few feet deep''.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Subverted. Initially, Nami manages Soru as early as the fight against the Black Cat pirates but the strain on her legs makes her collapse in pain immediately afterward. By the end of the East Blue arc, however, she can use it as easily as Luffy, if not as fast as him.
* BadBoss: Besides pulling a YouHaveFailedMe on his entire crew, Krieg shoots any subordinate that dares to question him.
** The Marines could count as this, given that while his actions were definitely deserving of reprimand, [[spoiler:executing Smoker over it]] was way above what was necessary.
* BaitAndSwitch: When they first meet, Nami threatens to throw Luffy overboard. Luffy very firmly tells her she can't do that... because he'll die.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe:
** As in canon, Robin's loyalty towards the Straw Hats comes from her being the first true friends she had in decades. This is especially true in regards to Luffy, where this serves as her source of romantic interest.
** This is also the catalyst to Miss Valentine's HeelFaceTurn. Mr. Five, her own partner, launching an attack knowing that it would hit her, while Vivi, her enemy, treated her injuries afterwards, made it quite clear to her which side she would rather be on.
* BerserkButton:
** Zoro rips Tashigi a new one when, like Kuina before her, she attributes her loss to women being weaker than men. Besides reminding him of his dead rival, it's an insult to his skill that he won simply because of his gender.
** Insulting her chocolates absolutely enrages Valerie, which is the reason she hates Ms. Christmas, who refers to them as "bitter dirt balls".
* BeyondTheImpossible: Luffy manages to damage the supposedly unbreakable Poneglyphs that no one has ever even managed to scratch. Though he couldn't destroy it, he melts a handprint into the Alabasta Poneglyph to hide the location of Pluton.
* TheBigDamnKiss:
** Kaya gives one to Usopp before he leaves with the Straw Hats.
** Luffy and Nami share one after he defeats Arlong.
** Vivi gives one to Luffy just before arriving at Alabasta.
** [[spoiler:Robin gives one to Luffy after getting to see Alabasta's Poneglyph]], and he, Nami, and Vivi reaffirm that her dreams are their dreams too.
* BigEater: Luffy is still one despite having no Gum-Gum fruit. This is explained by stating that mastering the Rokushiki allowed him to learn Life Return which allows him to control the speed of his metabolic intake. For obvious reasons, Nami also wishes to learn it, as stated in MundaneUtility.
* BlatantLies: When Luffy fearfully asks Shanks if he was not mad for eating the Devil Fruit, Shanks totally claims he wasn't while wearing a vindictive grin before subjecting the boy to TrainingFromHell to teach him how to control his Sun Logia body without harming others accidentally.
* BodyCountCompetition: Luffy, Zoro, and Nami compete to see who can take out the most Baroque Works agents at Whiskey Peak. Luffy wins because he takes out all the mooks while Nami and Zoro are facing the heavy hitters.
* BoisterousWeakling: Krieg, at least compared to the Straw Hats and anyone who's actually sailed the Grand Line. He loves to loudly boast about how amazing he is, usually insisting that his failures were due to lack of information, but anyone on the crew, except Usopp, was capable of defeating him.
* BreakTheHaughty: Smoker's pride causes him to chase after any pirates that he comes across, no matter how outclassed he is. He also refuses to accept a promotion for something he didn't do. [[spoiler:Both facts end up getting him killed when the higher-ups decide he's become a liability]].
* BrutalHonesty: Robin is painfully honest about why Vivi's plan of stopping Alabasta's civil war and talking things out simply ''won't work''. As she details, even if Vivi manages to get both sides to talk and agree to stop fighting, Baroque Works has agents on both sides who will sabotage any attempted negotiations.
* CanonImmigrant: Musshuru, Wapol's brother from the Episode of Chopper movie, makes an appearance on Drum Island.
* CatchAndReturn: In chapter 10, Sanji does this with a cannonball, using it to sink the Baroque Works ship that fired on the Going Merry.
* CassandraTruth: The Straw Hats unsuccessfully try to convince the rest remaining Baroque Works officers about how Crocodile plans to [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness kill them after using them to take over Alabasta]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the course of the East Blue arc, Nami develops from running from every fight and generally fearing dangerous situations to relishing a good fight and being far more relaxed about danger. Unlike canon where Nami panicked at the idea of facing a Warlord, here she comes across as more exasperated and mildly incredulous.
* ChekhovsGun: Luffy off-handedly mentions that [[FingerPokeOfDoom Shigan]] would be a good technique for Robin's devil fruit during her, Vivi, and Valerie's first training on the ship while also mentioning his trauma over breaking his fingers learning it. In chapter 15, Robin uses it to pierce the throat of Vice-admiral Doberman as a last-ditch distraction and promptly breaks her finger doing so.
* CoincidentalDodge: On Drum Island, Zoro dodges all of Mr. 3's traps and ambushes by complete accident due to his NoSenseOfDirection. Mr. 3 for his part initially thinks Zoro ''has'' to be screwing with him since he could not fathom the sheer improbability of it being mere coincidence before learning the truth.
* CovertPervert:
** Being sexually active has done wonders for Luffy's libido, as he's shown to be really excited by [[spoiler:[[GirlOnGirlIsHot Nami making out with Vivi]]]].
** After joining their relationship, [[spoiler:Vivi]] says she isn't ready to have sex with Luffy and Nami quite yet. But she does ask if she can watch them.
* CurbStompBattle:
** Luffy versus anyone from the East Blue quickly ends in his favor.
** Nami versus Gin ends quickly and brutally in her favor.
** The Straw Hats versus Baroque Works' blockade ends with every enemy ship sank and the Going Merry taking no damage at all.
** When Smoker attempts to confront Ace in Nanohana, the pirate smacks him down like an unruly child, calling him an absolute idiot for thinking he could take him on just because he had a seastone weapon.
** Despite being the two strongest fighters in Alabasta, Nami and Vivi handle Chaka and Pell fairly easily, with the only trouble coming from not wanting to actually harm them.
* CurbStompCushion:
** While Luffy completely overwhelms Robin during their spar, she still lands multiple hits on him and gives him a better fight than anyone else on the crew can.
** Crocodile shows absolutely no mercy to Chaka, Nami, and Vivi once they piss him off enough that he stops treating them like dumbass rookies he can enjoy tormenting. Nami and Vivi land a few good hits that genuinely injure Crocodile, but as soon as he starts using haki, they have no chance at all.
* CuttingTheKnot: Luffy regularly simply melts through safe doors.
* DamnedByFaintPraise: When Smoker takes the time to clear out the area before engaging Ace, the latter remarks about how that's increased his opinion of the man... all the way up to zero.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Miss Valentine saw her mother die in a robbery gone wrong.
* DavidVersusGoliath: Nami vs the much larger and stronger Don Krieg.
* DeadpanSnarker: When the villagers of Drum Island try to force the Straw Hats to "turn their ship around and leave", Nami snarkily points out it'd be literally impossible to turn their ship around in such a narrow channel.
* DeathByAdaptation:
** Mr. 5 attacks his partner while trying to kill the Straw Hats. With that being a BerserkButton of Luffy's, it was a fatal mistake.
** [[spoiler:Wapol]] doesn't survive his fight against [[spoiler:Chopper]].
** [[spoiler:Chaka]] doesn't survive [[spoiler:Crocodile's VillainousBreakdown]] when he attempts to pull a YouShallNotPass.
** [[spoiler:Luffy kills Crocodile during their fight.]]
** [[spoiler:Onigumo and Doberman die when the Straw Hats leave Alabasta, the former sinking in the sea after Luffy left him unable to do anything, the latter when Zoro decapitates him.]]
** [[spoiler:Smoker is killed by Kizaru after the higher-ups decide he's too uncontrollable.]]
* DespairEventHorizon:
** Implied offscreen, but unlike canon, Sabo's [[spoiler:presumed]] death at the hand of the World Noble and his inability to arrest him made Garp realize that he would never be able to convince Luffy and Ace of becoming marines as he had dreamed. Considering [[Manga/OnePiece One Piece's]] views on dreams and working towards them, the loss of Garp's dream is treated with a rather deserved somber atmosphere.
** Robin almost breaks entirely when Vivi confirms that the Alabasta Poneglyph only contains information on Pluton. Luckily, Vivi pulls her back from the brink by suggesting that information on the Void Century is likely to be in the one place the World Government doesn't want anyone to reach: Raftel.
* DieOrFly:
** Nami finally manages a rankyaku (albeit a rather weak one) while fleeing the Lapahns and the avalanche they caused.
** Vivi manages exactly one rankyaku per leg in order to disarm Crocodile's bomb, as she had no other means of moving it before the timer expired. Afterward it was noted that both her legs are now just one big bruise.
* DodgeTheBullet: When Gin tries to shoot her, Nami dodges fast enough to leave an after-image.
* DontMakeMeDestroyYou: At Nanohana, Ace repeatedly tells Smoker to simply go away and stop bothering him, stating he's not in the habit of crushing weaklings.
* DontTellMama: A variation using Nami as the TeamMom. but when Sanji is nearly seduced by Miss Doublefinger to interfere with her and Chopper's fight, Chopper pretty much says it in a tone of "I'm telling mom" that he's telling Nami what Sanji did, much to the cook's own fear.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Tashigi is a variation. She gets upset when people either refuse to fight her or beat her and refuse to kill her, insisting they're doing it because she's a woman.
* DoorStopper: Shaping up to be one, As of Chapter 12, there are almost 240,000 words, depending on whether or not you count spaces and paragraph breaks, meaning that each chapter averages to around 20,000 words per chapter and well putting in the Epic Novel. Chapter 9 was so immense as the longest chapter, nearly 37,000 words, that WordOfGod was that he was stopping any attempt to do any other arc in one chapter unless they were of manageable length.
* DoubleJump: Geppou or the Moonwalk, of the Rokushiki is this, which is described as kicking the air so hard that it becomes a platform from which to jump. As of chapter 8, while most of the Strawhats can use it, Sanji and Nami; an ExtremityExtremist and FragileSpeedster respectively use it the most out of them all followed by Luffy who obviously uses it to keep himself out of the ocean.
* DoWrongRight:
** Nami would have been fine if Usopp and Sanji were just napping and letting the others takes care of the Whiskey Peak Baroque agents, but she is furious to learn they genuinely fell for the trap.
** While not explicitly stated, it's heavily implied Smoker's crimes[[note]]Desertion, Dereliction of Duty, Misuse of Government Assets, Theft of Government Property, etc[[/note]] would have been completely swept under the rug if he had been at least successful in capturing the Straw Hat crew. The true problem is that he disobeyed orders and failed anyway, while also refusing to go along with the cover-up.
* DramaPreservingHandicap:
** On Drum Island, Luffy can't simply full-speed Geppo to the top of the mountain because of the amount of jarring that would cause the already weakened Vivi and Robin. Instead, he has to very slowly bounce his way up so that the girls aren't just being subjected to awful G-Forces as well as potential whiplash. This ends once the ropes securing Robin to his back snap and she starts falling down to the ground. Luffy creates a new technique on the spot to catch back up to her once Geppo proves too slow.
** While fighting Musshuru, Nami's legs are still weakened from escaping an avalanche and the electrical part of her Clima-tact is unusable due to her draining the battery tazing Wapol.
* DyingToBeReplaced: [[spoiler:Primordial has stated that due to Smoker never doing much even in the planning stages of the fic, it would be better off to kill him off and transfer the Moku Moku no Mi to Tashigi then just getting casually defeated by the Straw Hats]].
* EasilyForgiven: After Mr. 5 tries to kill Miss Valentine, Vivi is remarkably quick to forgive the woman who just tried to kill her.
* EffortlessAmazonianLift: Nami displays her growing strength by effortlessly carrying Vivi back to the Going Merry.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors:
** Because smoke is simply particles that fire doesn't burn, Luffy's [[ThePowerOfTheSun Devil Fruit]] easily overpowers [[SuperSmoke Smoker's]], instantly incinerating a large portion of his smoke.
** Robin's ability to sprout parts of her body anywhere is nullified by Hina who can shackle anything that touches her. It takes a good deal of creativity on Robin's part to defeat her when her normal submission holds fail.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Crocodile completely dismisses the possibility of Robin betraying him, thinking there's no way she'd ever follow through on that, but in fact, that is precisely what happened.
* EveryoneHasStandards: The upper echelons of the marines may be {{knight templar}}s who believe [[VillainousLineage villainy is inherited]], but Axe-Hand Morgan and Nezumi were so corrupt that even they would throw them into the depths of Impel Down for more reasons than just to save face.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Crocodile thinks Vivi must have offered the Straw Hats incredible rewards to get them to help her, but they're only doing it because Vivi's their friend, a possibility that simply does not enter his mind at all.
* ExactWords:
** When Tashigi mentions Roronoa Zoro, Zoro comments that he hears that name often. She later accuses him of lying about who he was, only for Zoro to point out he said he heard the name often; he just never mentioned that was because it's his name.
** During their BodyCountCompetition in Whiskey Peak, Luffy wins because he fought all the {{mooks}} while Zoro and Nami were fighting the officers.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Vice Admiral Onigumo remarks that he thought Luffy would be bigger when they fought. Justified given he's likely met Luffy's grandfather, who's almost four feet taller than Luffy.
* ExtremeMeleeRevenge: After getting hit by Krieg's exploding spear, Nami hits him in the groin repeatedly, even using the man's own spear for the finishing blow. Luffy tries to stop her, only for her DeathGlare to cause him to say he just saw Krieg twitch and suggest she hit the man some more.
* EyeScream:
** Nami takes out one of Krieg's eyes with her staff during their fight.
** PlayedForLaughs when Usopp accidentally gets chili sauce in his eyes.
** [[spoiler:Crocodile loses his right eye when Nami drenches him with a surprise attack at the same time that Vivi was about to carve him up with her slashers.]]
** [[spoiler:Sanji loses an eye TakingTheBullet for Nami when the crew is escaping Alabasta.]]
* FailedASpotCheck: [[spoiler: Despite stating that the Marines wanted to pass the Smoke-Smoke fruit to someone more controllable, no one brought any fruit when they executed Smoker, causing it to reincarnate right in front of his old friend and right-hand woman during their lunch, cheesing them off even more than they already were.]]
* FantasticSlur: "Dreamer" is used by [[RapePillageAndBurn Morganeer]] pirates towards Peace Mains due to the latter being optimists and believers in [[PowerOfFriendship nakama]][[TrueCompanions ship]] as opposed to their materialistic savage natures.
* {{Fartillery}}: A literal example. During their fight, Wapol grows a cannon out of his backside and shoots Chopper with it.
* FastBallSpecial: At Nanohana's port, Valerie sits on Luffy's hand and lets him hurl her towards an enemy Baroque Works ship.
* FatalFlaw: [[spoiler:Smoker's pride is what ultimately does him in. His inability to allow the Straw Hats to escape from his perfect record despite totally outclassing him makes the Marines no longer able to overlook his CowboyCop tendencies which caused Loguetown to once again become overrun with pirates as well as not accepting accolades not his own despite orders from the World Government ends with him being executing after a KangarooCourt. As he's dying, Kizaru asks the commodore as to why he could not have swallowed his pride just this once, to which Smoker's final thought was that he would never do that.]]
* FightsLikeANormal: Luffy mostly fights without using his Devil Fruit powers, in large part because the sun/plasma abilities it gives him are incredibly destructive and he could easily kill people if he's not careful. This draws a stark contrast with Smoker who uses his Devil Fruit constantly while fighting (Luffy actually lamenting that he doesn't have a power that he can use as much Smoker uses his), and is shocked when Luffy reveals that he's also a Logia. It's not until the end of their fight that Luffy uses his Logia powers which overpower Smoker's easily.
* FingerPokeOfDoom: The Shigan, by way of gaining the ability to control the finger's rather delicate muscle and bones to the point it becomes like a bullet, is able to penetrate nearly anything. Luffy is also somehow able to transfer this into his pipe and plans on teaching Valerie how to do it with her parasol. It should be noted that out of all the Rokushiki, Luffy likes and therefore uses this one the least, mostly because he remembers constantly breaking his fingers learning it.
* FlashStep: As of chapter 8, Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji know Soru at differing levels of mastery. The current order of skill on the crew are Luffy by a mile, with Sanji, Nami, Zoro, and finally Usopp taking up the rear and the rest of the crew being too new to have learned it yet; with Nami losing to Sanji for the sheer degree with which the blonde has already trained his lower body. Usopp being the final one of the original five to display the skill and also being the worst with it is a nod to his role in the canon storyline, with him being the most "normal" Straw Hat. As of chapter 10, Vivi is capable of a Soru described as "passable."
* FoodAsBribe: Nami attempts this to get out of fighting Buggy's crew, only for Luffy to prove how serious he is by refusing.
* FlatWhat: The {{omake}} in chapter 15 features one from Cobra when he learns there's GenericGraffiti on the Alabasta Poneglyph talking about his ancestor's butt.
--->'''Robin:''' Unless I'm very much mistaken, this says "Nefertari D. Lili has a fat ass."\
'''Nefertari Cobra:''' What.
* FragileSpeedster: Nami is fast enough to basically dance around Krieg's attacks but has trouble doing significant damage and the one blow Krieg lands nearly takes her out of the fight.
* GenericGraffiti: An {{omake}} in chapter 15 includes some on the Alabasta Poneglyph that serves as a HopeSpot for Crocodile. Unfortunately for him, all it says (with exceptionally poor/crass grammar) is that "Nefertari D. Lili has a fat ass."
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Both Vivi and Luffy agree seeing Nami and Robin makeout is hot.
* GladHesOnOurSide: After Robin single-handedly takes out a Baroque Works crew and capsizes their ship, the other Straw Hats remark that they're glad she's on their side.
* GrewASpine: Over the course of the East Blue arc, Nami goes from terrified of fighting and of Arlong to enjoying a good fight as much as Luffy or Zoro and openly declaring that Luffy will kick Arlong's ass.
* GroinAttack:
** Nami unleashes several against Krieg to end their fight. Then continues to do so out of rage.
** Chopper gives one to Wapol during their battle.
** Nami's fight against Mr. 2 ends with her tasing his crotch until he passes out.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: Discussed. Vivi assumed Nami was a fragile ranged fighter due to her "sorcery", only to watch the girl casually do squats with an 800-pound dumbbell on her shoulders.
* HeroicRROD:
** Nami severely overworks her legs to escape the avalanche caused by the Lapahns.
** [[spoiler:Vivi tears nearly all the muscles in her leg to perform a Rankyaku strong enough to destroy Crocodile's city-busting bomb.]]
* HonorBeforeReason: Multiple characters put principles above practicality at certain points, though some find ways to TakeAThirdOption.
** Sanji refuses to harm a woman or allow one to be harmed in his presence, causing him to repeatedly interfere with Nami's training, much to her chagrin. Eventually, Nami gets through to him that he won't always be around to protect her and keeping her from training will merely cause her to become more injured in later fights. He starts to backslide when Chopper fights Ms. Doublefinger, only to use the excuse of having to concentrate on fighting Mr. 1 so he won't be able to see Chopper harming her.
** Zoro almost wins his fight against Smoker easily after pressing the latter's seastone weapon against him, greatly weakening Smoker, but insists he'd never accept a win like that. Smoker calls out his foolishness but Zoro manages to eke out a win by once more managing to utilize Armament Haki.
** Smoker insists on arresting the one pirate crew to escape him, the Straw Hats, along with any pirate he encounters along the way (even if they're ''vastly'' more powerful than him like Ace). He also refuses to take credit for something he didn't do, raising a stink over his promotion to Commodore for stopping Crocodile. Unlike the others, he doesn't find a loophole to work around his principles, which leads to his downfall.
* HopeSpot: The ancient strain of Cordyceps Robin was infected with would eventually appear to clear up on it's own; but in reality, the symptoms only fade after the fungus has completely taken over its host, which then drives them to infect more people.
* IAmAMonster: Chopper attempts to claim this. Luffy laughs and says that on a scale of 1 to 10, Chopper doesn't even rate a one.
* IAmNotLeftHanded:
** Luffy usually fights without his Devil Fruit powers but is willing to break them out when sufficiently angered or pressed.
** [[spoiler:Crocodile reveals he knows Haki because Vivi and Nami are good enough to force him to use it.]]
* ICantBelieveImSayingThis: Robin never thought she would agree with the World Government on anything, then she learned about Cordyceps, a fungus so terrifying she finds herself agreeing with the World Government using scorched-earth tactics to eradicate any hint of it.
* IdiotBall: Lampshaded in the fact that Red Hair Pirates had no clue as to ''why'' the hell they would bring the Devil Fruit off their ship when nobody knew they had it in the first place.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: When one of Wapol's men points a gun at her, Nami tells him he has until she finishes her sentence to get his gun out of her face.
* InelegantBlubbering: Robin is described as ugly-crying when Luffy saves her life on Drum Island.
* InstantExpert:
** Unlike canon, Nami masters her Clima-Tact instantly instead of fumbling around on her first usage. This is justified by the fact that she was part of the creation process and was also able to stop Usopp from adding of the useless party tricks of the canon version.
** Mr. 2 figures out Soru almost immediately after watching Nami use it, though it still strains him to use it too often.
* InverseLawOfUtilityAndLethality: Luffy's powers are so inherently deadly and destructive that he rarely actually uses them until entering the Grand Line.

* ItGetsEasier:
** After Luffy accidentally kills a bandit, Shanks admits that killing does get easier. Some kills will be so easy, they'll be forgotten the next day. The trick is to never ''enjoy'' killing.
** Luffy later gives the same speech to Chopper after [[spoiler:the reindeer accidentally kills Wapol]].
* KillItWithFire: One of the best ways to counter Musshuru's poison spores is to burn them.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Miss Valentine surrenders after Luffy outright ignores her best attack.
* LastChanceToQuit: Before their fight starts, Chopper offers Wapol a chance to simply leave and never come back. His reward is a cannon blast to the face.
* TheLawOfDiminishingDefensiveEffort: Inverted with Luffy. Because he was trained to avoid accidentally turning intangible, he tends to reflexively dodge attacks rather than let them harmlessly pass through him. Because, and especially in the case of a physical attack, there wouldn't even be ashes coming out on the other side as Pearl demonstrated; he is now one arm down and gained a cauterized stump for his efforts.
* LawfulStupid: How Smoker is generally portrayed.
** He never left his posting Loguetown despite several (relatively) big name pirates running loose in the East Blue, including Arlong enslaving an archipelago.
** When in Alabasta, he attempts to arrest Ace, citing that "He has to so long as [Smoker] is a Marine and [Ace] is a pirate". Ace, who's ''far'' out of his league, [[DontMakeMeDestroyYou tells him to go away]].
* LeeroyJenkins: During the confrontation at Rainbase between Zoro and Robin against Smoker and Hina, Tashigi ignores Hina's attempt at strategizing to run off and attack Zoro repeatedly.
* LifeIsntFair: When Vivi declares how unfair the situation in Alabasta is, Valerie points out how painfully naive such a statement is and that if life were fair, none of them would be in their current situation.
* LiteralMetaphor: Early on, Luffy openly states that the Grand Line is more dangerous than East Blue, and specifically mentions that "Everyone and their dog has [Devil Fruits]. And I probably mean that literally".
* LogicalWeakness:
** Since Logia's don't disperse into their element automatically, they can be hit by attacks too fast for them to follow.
** Using Tekkai requires one to tense one's muscles to the point they become like iron, shutting down any form of mobility. If the incoming blow is sufficiently powerful enough, all it does is it makes the user a sitting duck.
*** Another weakness crops up in chapter 15: Tekkai defense only works on parts of the body that have muscles. [[spoiler:[[EyeScream Eyes aren't muscles]], they’re modified nerves.]]
** Nami has only really begun to properly train and exercise after joining the Straw Hats, before relying on her wits and sexual appeal to get out of sticky situations, as such her stamina is lackluster and can only use Soru and Kami-e for a set period of time. Obviously, her continued training will soon render this weakness moot.
** Musshuru's powers work by spreading poison spores from his body, making him vulnerable to both fire (which can burn his spores) and wind (which can blow them away) based attacks.
** Having evolved on a desert island, Carue has a lot of trouble with colder and/or humider climates. According to Vivi, he was sick for months when they first left Alabasta.
* LoopholeAbuse:
** The Isshi-20 remark that their oaths as doctors require they heal every patient, regardless of who they are. However, nothing prevents them from tending to their less despicable patients first. As such, when Wapol is defeated, they treat the Straw Hats and Drum villagers before tending to Wapol's forces, which also gives the villagers time to tie Wapol's soldiers up.
** Sanji's code will not allow him to stand by and watch as any women, even an enemy, gets hurt. During Chopper's fight with Ms. Doublefinger, he works around this by keeping himself too busy fighting Mr. 1 to pay attention to Chopper's fight.
* LudicrousPrecision: Dr. Kureha is so skilled as a doctor she can take someone's '''exact''' temperature by poking their forehead with a finger.
* MagicKnight: Both Luffy and Nami are equally comfortable using melee weapons and their Devil Fruit powers or "sorcery" respectively.
* MakingLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces: Luffy and Nami were getting intimate on a building's roof before the arrival of Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine interrupted them.
* MassOhCrap: The Straw Hats all have a moment when they realize the blockade around Alabasta is led by ''two'' Vice Admirals.
* MasterOfYourDomain: Luffy knows the Life Return ability, something Nami is greatly interested in.
* MediumAwareness: When Mr. 4 [[DelayedReaction finally reacts]] to Usopp calling him an idiot, Usopp yells at him that it happened six paragraphs ago.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: Valerie isn't very good at actually being evil; even her evil laughter is stated to be adorable.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Valerie leaves Baroque Works after her partner, Mr. 5, tries to kill her along with Luffy.
* MortonsFork: While carrying Vivi and Robin up to Kureha, Luffy is stuck with the choice on whether to use his powers to warm them up. If he does, Vivi's fever will get worse but Robin will be spared the icy cold. If he doesn't, Robin will suffer from the freezing winds but Vivi's fever will be slowed.
* MuggingTheMonster: Mr. 9 spends some time talking smack about Nami's navigational skills when he and Miss Wednesday hitch a ride to Whiskey Peak. Not only does Nami prove to be an incredible navigator, but she's strong enough that she could beat him, his partner, and the whole of Whiskey Peak by herself.
* MundaneUtility: Nami wants to learn the Life Return technique so she can eat without having to worry about her figure.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Nami is noted to having the same figure she has in canon but still able to squat 800 pounds and able to lift Vivi up with no problem. Unlike canon, where this ability was noted only when [[RuleOfFunny it was comedic]], here she can use her strength just fine in combat, though she still prefers a FragileSpeedster approach as the training for Tekkai and Shigan scare her.
* MythologyGag:
** When Gin tried to shoot Nami, Nami was able to use Soru [[SpeedEchoes quick enough to leave behind an afterimage]]. This is actually not all that different from the first iteration of her [[DoppelgangerSpin Mirage Tempo]] as seen from her canon fight with Miss Doublefinger.
** Nami's Clima-Tact is red in color similar to how it was originally colored in the manga until the anime changed it and the manga changed the color to fit.
* MySkullRunnethOver: During the Battle of Alubarna, due to her particularly sensitive Observation Haki augmented by her unrelated clairvoyance, Vivi is in near debilitating pain from all deaths happening around her.
* NaiveNewcomer: Vivi, though justified in due to her somewhat pacifistic nature. She truly thought that bringing the leader of the rebel's forces and her father to a peace confrence would stop the civil war from happening, not realizing that Crocodile probably had already thought of such a thing happening and implanted Baroque Works agents into both camps to restart the fighting in case of a ceasefire. Robin and the rest of the Straw Hats have to tell her as gently but firmly as possible that fighting their way through will probably be the only way to stop the war.
* NeverGetsFat: Nami wishes to learn the Life Return technique so she can eat as much as she wants while maintaining her figure.
* NeverMyFault: Krieg finds countless excuses for why he failed in the Grand Line, blaming his men, lack of information, and more. While part of it is sheer bad luck of annoying a Warlord, most of it is because of his massive case of SmallNameBigEgo.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain:
** Miss Goldenweek's Tranquil Green color trap gives Zoro insight into both Observation Haki and how to cut steel.
** [[spoiler:Marine higher ups had Kizaru execute Smoker, as they wanted to give someone who is less likely to disobey orders the Smoke-Smoke Fruit. Unfortunately for them, the Fruit reincarnates before Hina and Tashigi while they’re in the lunch line, making them realized what happened to Smoker, allowing Hina to make Tashigi eat a portion of the fruit.]]
* NoJustNoReaction: One of the first things that breaks through Robin's normal stoicism is Vivi saying that the latter thought she joined Baroque Works to become [[DarkMistress Crocodile's queen]]. The look of utter revulsion and DeathGlare were enough to send Vivi scrambling behind Zoro to hide.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Crocodile. Instead of entertaining the Straw Hats, he realizes they're a threat to his plans even if he thinks they're not a threat to him. He changes the plans, creates a trap for the Straw Hats on the off chance they succeeded in getting information out of the Baroque Works members that aren't confirmed dead, and then leaves them to die inside of it while he continues on his way to the capital to personally ensure ThePlan works in his favor.
--> '''Crocodile''' "As if I would compromise my three-year-long plan to have a slugfest with some no-name pirate Captain from East Blue."
* NoSell:
** Even without his Devil Fruit powers, Luffy completely ignores Miss Valentine's "10,000 Kilo Press" attack.
** Zoro took a direct hit to the face from Miss Monday's Superhuman Brass Knuckles. He was not impressed at all.
--> '''Zoro:''' "I'm sorry, was I supposed to feel that at all?"
* NoodleIncident: Valerie claims she's seen a weirder Devil Fruit than Wapol's but is cut off before she can elaborate.
* NormalFishInATinyPond: Luffy is powerful enough to be a serious threat in Paradise, but in the East Blue, he's completely unstoppable. However, this works the other way around as well. When facing against foes who can utilize haki and have the same mastery of the Rokushiki or comparable martial art as him, he's still a rookie. An stupidly powerful rookie, yes, but still a rookie going against New World veterans. [[spoiler:This nearly costs him his life while fighting Onigumo, leaving Alabasta]].
* NotHyperbole: Luffy promises Nami that he'll "feed Arlong his nose". During their fight, Luffy breaks off Arlong's nose and shoves it into the fishman's mouth.
* NotSoStoic:
** Chapter 9 basically tears Robin's normal stoic behavior to ribbons. From the truth about what the Alabasta Poneglyph actually contains, to Luffy saving her when she fell off his back; the emotional rollercoaster is enough to have her cry more than she ever has since the destruction of Ohara.
** The fight against Zoro leaves the normally emotionless Miss Goldenweek severely freaked out, stating she's not even on the same island as "ruffled feathers" for how badly she's shaken.
* NumberTwo: Both Zoro and Nami are in competition for the rank of First Mate, which gives them the authority of the crew in case Luffy is otherwise incapacitated or unable to give orders. Nami secretly considers herself unworthy due to her inability [[spoiler:to help Luffy carry Vivi and Robin up the Drum Rockies while they were sick]].
* OffScreenTeleportation: Twice in chapter 11.
** First, Zoro manages to get lost on the way to Rainbase, yet ''still'' arrives there well before Luffy and Robin.
** Second, Robin takes her eyes off Luffy and Zoro for a second, only to look back and find they had stolen some snacks and sake respectively. She promptly sprouts eyes everywhere to make sure she never takes her eyes off them.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** A mark of how serious Luffy is about taking care of the sick Vivi and Robin comes when he refuses to go eat until they've been fed.
** Chopper is shocked by Kureha's urgency when she insists he treat Vivi while she handles Robin alone. Afterward, they find out just how incredibly serious Robin's ailment actually was.
** Valerie is noted as being uncharacteristically timid when she asks the Isshi-20 if she'll have a scar from her fight against Chess and Kuromarimo.
* OpenSaysMe: Luffy and Nami both kick open multiple doors while storming Nezumi's marine base.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Tashigi is reasonably strong in the East Blue, effortlessly taking down three armed opponents at once in Loguetown. But when her superiors Hina and Smoker confront Zoro and Robin in Rainbase, she barely even rates a distraction for the two pirates. She repeatedly attacks Zoro while he's fighting Smoker and is treated as a persistent annoyance each time.
* PaddedSumoGameplay: Smoker vs Zoro at Rainbase. Zoro lacks the seastone weaponry or haki needed to harm Smoker while also being too StrongAndSkilled for Smoker to outmanuever or overpower.
* PercussivePickpocket: While tazing Wapol, Nami steals several antidotes to Musshuru's poison off him.
* PipePain: After fighting Buggy, Luffy takes up fighting with a pipe again, though he mostly uses it for training the others.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: A Marine officer lampshades that the Straw Hat pirates haven't really done anything "pirate-y" as even the marine officers they attacked were so corrupt, they'd have been in Impel Down if the higher-ups had known.
* {{Polyamory}}: As of chapter 10, Luffy is involved with both Nami [[spoiler:and Vivi]]. Chapter 15 [[spoiler:adds Robin]].
* ThePowerOfTheSun: Luffy's Devil Fruit makes him a Sun man.
* PowersDoTheFighting:
** Smoker is a decent fighter but he still fights almost entirely with his Devil Fruit powers.
** Valerie relies too heavily on her Devil Fruit and has little fighting skill without it.
* ProperlyParanoid:
** The World Government's response to even a single case of Cordyceps is to, at a minimum, kill everyone who was even in the same ''city'' and then burn their corpses. And that's if they don't simply destroy the entire island. Given that said fungus is capable of causing a localized ZombieApocalypse, even ''Robin'' agrees with their methods.
** Kureha kept her predecessors' notes on how to cure Cordyceps, even though it was believed to have been completely eradicated, which is fortunate as that's what Robin was infected with.
---> '''Kureha:''' For centuries, my mentor's mentors and so forth tried tirelessly to create a cure for the disease. The succeeded, roughly five hundred years too late. They were the ''only'' ones trying to cure it rather than simply trying and failing to annihilate every trace of it. And since the World Government ''always'' does such a ''bang-up job'', my predecessors kept meticulous records redundancies in case something was missed. [sic erat scriptum]
* PyrrhicVictory: Downplayed; soon after leaving Alabasta, the Straw Hats are attacked by ''[[GodzillaThreshold two vice-admirals]]'', and while they are victorious, it’s far from a clean win: [[spoiler: Zoro's Yubashiri is destroyed & [[XMarksTheHero gains another cut over the one Mihawk gave him]] while Sanji [[EyeScream loses an eye]]; meanwhile, if it wasn't for Nami, Luffy would've drowned]].
* RazorWind: The Rankyaku technique and Zoro's sword-based version of it is capable of performing this. Of those who know the technique, only Nami was unable to do so until Drum Island as her leg muscles had not yet had the strength necessary to get even a whisper of wind; while Sanji, who uses his personally created Black Leg fighting style, was able to perform it much quicker.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: One of the Marine officers mentions he's not quite comfortable putting bounties on pirates who've only gone after other pirates and corrupt Marines.
* RedBaron: Crossing over with AdaptationNameChange, as both Nami and Zoro's epithets get changed from "Cat Burglar" and "Pirate Hunter" to "Storm Empress" and "Demon of Three Swords" respectively. Luffy on the other hand keeps his "Straw Hat" epithet from canon.
* RejectedApology: After Krieg is defeated, Gin tries to apologize to Sanji but the chef blows him off, stating that he lost all sympathy the moment he pulled a gun on Zeff.
* RelationshipUpgrade:
** Luffy and Nami have their first time after Arlong's defeat.
** While Vivi doesn't have sex with them, she does join Luffy's and Nami's relationship (and watch them have sex) shortly before arriving an Alabasta.
** Robin officially joins the relationship in chapter 15 with TheBigDamnKiss to Luffy. Nami then steals her own, and Robin tries to apologize again to Vivi for what she had been doing, only for Vivi to just shut her up with her own kiss.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Unsurprisingly, being a Sun Man, Luffy is impervious to the cold. Even the extreme temperatures of Drum Mountain don't affect him, though he still was on the clock due to Vivi and Robin. Crossing the desert shows he's also immune to heat as well, though he still wears a cloak once Vivi points out that sandstorms would still be a problem.
* ResignationsNotAccepted: Valerie initially joined Baroque Works temporarily to earn some money but learned too late no one is allowed to leave the organization.
* RevengeBeforeReason:
** The Lapahn herd nearly dies in the avalanche they caused in an attempt to kill Nami for harming the child of their leader.
** As Nami puts it, Smoker never once left Loguetown even while Arlong was enslaving her home. But Luffy tramples on his pride by escaping arrest and the marine chases them all the way to Alabasta.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: After Nezumi's men shoot Nojiko in the leg, the Straw Hats assault his base where Nami electrocutes him before stealing all of his valuables.
* SayMyName: When Robin falls off Luffy's back as he climbs the Drum Rockies, he dives after her, shouting her name at the top of his lungs.
* ScarsAreForever: Valerie ends up with a large though faint burn scar on her right arm after her fight with Chess and Kuromarimo. Chapter 10 turns this into a downplayed trope as Valerie mentions that Chopper's medicine reduced the scarring to the point that it's hardly visible.
* SchmuckBait: Shanks tricks Luffy into believing he is invincible as a Sun Logia before giving him a reality check via an Armament Haki-coated fist to the head to teach him a lesson and nip the bud before he gets overconfident in his Logia body.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler:While neither Smoker, Tashigi, or Hina believed they were getting away from the Alabasta incident without egg on their face due to Smoker rejecting the propaganda the World Government was spouting, none of them saw the former getting executed. Once the Moku Moku no MI reincarnates, Hina all but force feeds it to Tashigi and the two desert the Marines]].
* SelectiveObliviousness: Tashigi's insistence that women are weaker than men comes across as rather bizarre given the likes of Tsuru, Charlotte Linlin, and Boa Hancock who are all recognized as some of the most powerful individuals in the world.
* SenselessSacrifice: [[spoiler:Chaka]] tells Vivi and Nami to run while he holds off [[spoiler:Crocodile]], only to be killed before he even finishes his sentence.
* SensoryOverload: Cordyceps causes, among other things, extreme hypersensitivity when it comes to touch. Even the softest sheets the Going Merry has feel like steel wool on Robin's skin and every touch is agony.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: When more women join the crew, Nami isn't willing to give up the girls' room that had been acting as the captain's quarters and tells the others they better be into voyeurism. [[spoiler:Becomes a BrickJoke when it turns out Vivi is.]]
* ShoutOut:
** On Little Garden, Vivi mistakes an ammonite for an [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Omanyte]], only for Nami to tell her that it isn't [[WebVideo/TwitchPlaysPokemon Lord Helix]]. Doubles as a [[BreakingTheFourthWall Fourth Wall Break]], since Pokémon does not exist in-universe.
** Kureha reveals that Robin was infected with [[Videogame/TheLastOfUs Cordyceps]].
** If Luffy punches someone in the face, he will usually tell them to [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann grit their teeth]].
** Usopp hit the Kung-Fu Dugong with the [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Omae wa mo shinderu]]. It didn't work, and then Robin referenced [[WebVideo/HellsingUltimateAbridged Hellsing Abridged]] by commenting that she heard "I know you are, but what am I?" from the Dugong.
* SickeningSweethearts: Luffy and Nami after their RelationshipUpgrade. Eventually, Zoro starts complaining about it.
* SkilledButNaive: Chopper does well against Wapol but takes several unnecessary hits due to either taking his eyes off the man or offering to simply let him leave.
* SlasherSmile: Nami sports one on her bounty photo.
* SmallNameBigEgo:
** Krieg, much like canon, who insists he's invincible even after Luffy destroys his armor with a single punch.
** Smoker genuinely believed he could defeat Ace, one of Whitebeard's strongest men, simply because he has a seastone weapon, something Ace mocked him for.
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: Vivi finally gets through to Pell that she's not an imposter by sharing information that only he, Chaka, and the royal family could possibly know.
* SpeedEchoes: By chapter 4, Nami is fast enough to leave behind an after-image when dodging point blank gunfire.
* SpottingTheThread:
** Having spent a great deal of time around rich people (to rob them), Nami realizes "Klahadore" is more than he seems because no butler would ever be so disrespectful towards their employer, nor would anyone rich enough to have a butler allow it.
** Luffy, Zoro, and Nami all notice that "Klahadore" consciously stops himself from defending against Usopp's punch, showing he has some form of combat skill.
** When they first meet, Luffy almost immediately realizes the story of Robin sinking half a dozen battleships as a child is nonsense because her Devil Fruit doesn't give her that kind of offensive power.
** Pell ''claims'' that Vivi "gave away that she's an imposter" because she's far too violent. Vivi counters that she became the second in command of the Suna Suna Clan as a child by wrestling Kohza for leadership.
* StatingTheSimpleSolution:
** When Mr. 3 ponders if there's anyone they could make help him and Miss Goldenweek on Drum Island, she points out that his wax is white and Drum is a winter island covered in snow, so they'll have the advantage anyway without any extra work.
** Kizaru suggests that rather than rail against an unearned promotion, Smoker should have "treated it as a scar and grown stronger from it".
* TheStationsOfTheCanon: Zigzagged. While most events before Whiskey Peak happen roughly the same as canon, Nami never pretends to betray the crew to Arlong nor does Higuma kidnap Luffy. In the latter case, the author actually DID do so initially and even created a backstory for Higuma where he got his bounty for raiding a Marine Outpost. This was [[{{Rewrite}} rewritten later on]] because, according to WordOfGod, the author had been too afraid of huge changes when he started writing the story.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Vivi notes Nami has the same sexy and feminine figure as herself, but still does a hundred squats with eight hundred pound dumbbells.
* SuperDoc:
** Dr. Kureha is the one surviving doctor on Drum Island, after [[TyrantTakesTheHelm King Wapol]] took the best twenty doctors for himself while exiling or ''killing'' all of the other ones. She's also capable of diagnosing diseases thought extinct in mere seconds and curing them in minutes.
** Her apprentice also counts in some respects, despite being quite young. He was the one who cured [[spoiler:Vivi]] of the Kestia bite. And a Reindeer. He joins the crew.
* SuperReflexes: During training with Usopp, Vivi dodges attacks she can't even see coming. [[spoiler:This implies that she may have a natural talent at Kenbunshoku Haki. Later in chapter 10, Ace believes that she may have some form precognitive ability as her Kenbunshoku isn't awake yet, but she's still reacting to something.]]
* SuperSenses: Nami's ability to predict the weather is completely ludicrous, including knowing a cyclone is about to form directly in front of their ship from a slight breeze through an open porthole. The reason this is ludicrous is that as Vivi and Robin note, that cyclones in the Grand Line, even in Paradise, happen with '''''zero''''' warning. The fact that a simple breeze is able to tell the navigator that much in such a short amount of time makes Robin believe that it's a once in a generation or multiple generations ability
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: When Nami asks Vivi when she started crushing on Luffy, Vivi tries denying that she ever said anything about how "chiseled his abs were", or how she called him "my knight in shining armor" or how she "felt so warm and safe while he was bringing me up Bighorn" before she gives up and admits she's crushing on Luffy.
* TakeThat: A minor one is given to stories where Luffy is trained in Haki before starting his journey, with Shanks mentioning that not even he is irresponsible enough to teach a child how to use Haki.
* TakingTheBullet:
** On Drum Island, Valerie takes a cannonball for Usopp that Wapol had fired at them.
** While escaping Alabasta, [[spoiler:Sanji leaps in front of Nami to protect her from one of Yubishari's broken shards, losing his eye in the process]].
* TalkingInYourSleep: One of the side effects of Cordyceps is sleep talking, causing Robin to spill some things she'd rather the crew not know.
* TechnicallyLivingZombie: A victim of Cordyceps doesn't die for months, even as the fungus has completely taken over their body and eventually infects their brain.
* TheirFirstTime: Luffy and Nami are strongly implied to have had sex when they disappear together during Cocoyashi's party and the next day, Nami is taking care to walk gingerly.
* TiredOfRunning: In chapter 4, Nami officially decides she's done running from conflict and insists Luffy train her more. By the end of the chapter, she's defeated the second highest bounty in the East Blue and his right hand man.
* ToThePain: In the middle of his VillainousBreakdown, Crocodile starts ranting about how he intends to flay Nami and Vivi alive, leave them for the vultures to pick at, and regularly forcefeed them enough food and medicine that he can continue their torture forever.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Except Luffy, all the Straw Hats start at their canon levels of ability, only to become considerably stronger much faster than canon. Notable examples include Zoro creating his RazorWind attack early, Nami defeating Krieg on her own, and Sanji utilizing Diable Jambe as early as Drum Island. Nami is confirmed by WordOfGod to be intended as a fourth "monster" of the Straw Hat crew.
** [[spoiler:Cobra is given the Sand Sand Fruit after Crocodile dies along with notes on how to train his guards in Rokushiki]].
** A tragic example. [[spoiler:Tashigi eats Smoker's devil fruit after the latter is executed.]]
* TrainingFromHell: Training to learn the various Rokushiki is not fun for anyone. Both Tekkai and Kami-e involve getting hit repeatedly until you instinctively learn how to either tank or dodge the attack.
* TryingNotToCry: After Mr. 5 admits to not caring if she dies, Miss Valentine struggles valiantly not to cry as she admits she should've expected as much.
* TwinkleInTheSky: After being hit by Valerie's [[HomeRunHitter Ten Thousand Kilo Home Run]], Wapol is sent flying towards the horizon.
* UnknownRival: While Tashigi is insistent that she's Zoro's rival, the latter is equally insistent that she isn't, mostly because she's far too weak to be more than a minor but persistent annoyance.
* UnskilledButStrong: Smoker to an extent due to the nature of his Devil Fruit as both a Logia and one that isn't inherently destructive. Luffy points out that basically no one in the East Blue can even touch him and since it isn't destructive, Smoker can use it all he wants but it comes with the drawback that it's all he uses, leaving his other skills atrophied and his Devil Fruit usage uncreative. Contrast StrongAndSkilled Luffy who's both skilled with his Devil Fruit and knows Rokushiki. It isn't until the climax of the Alabasta arc that he tries new techniques.
* UnwantedAssistance: Sanji has a bad habit of trying to help Nami when she's training, much to her chagrin as this is actually detrimental to her in the long-run.
* VileVillainLaughableLackey: Crocodile is an extremely dangerous and serious enemy who has brought an entire nation to the brink of civil war. Most of his underlings range from completely ineffectual to outright comical.
* VillainHasAPoint:
** After hearing about how horrific the fungus is, even '''''Robin''''' agrees with the World Government's policy of burning any island that has even a single case of Cordyceps.
** Despite Smoker's court martial being a KangarooCourt because [[HonorBeforeReason he won't do has the World Government says and take credit for bring down Crocodile]], several legitimate reasons for being court martialed are brought up by Admiral Kizaru, such as desertion of his post and misuse of millitary assets. Smoker himself notes he can't actually deny the charges and pleads guilty.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:Crocodile suffers one due to his fight against Nami, Vivi, Pell, and Chaka. Nami uses a new attack from her Clima-tact to drench him with water, which Vivi follows up by slashing him from his collarbone through his [[EyeScream eye]]. This enrages him so badly that he immediately kills Chaka, stops playing around and starts [[IAmNotLeftHanded using Haki]], and is outright ranting and raving about what he's going to do to them instead of actually just killing them. Predictably, they get away when Luffy arrives for the save.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Crocodile as a matter of course like in canon. Zoro even name drops the trope when Tashigi is confused as to why an "ally" of the government is undermining one of the founding kingdoms of the World Government.
* ViolenceReallyIsTheAnswer:
** Nami realizes that all her time as a thief really amounted to nothing substantial and that being strong really is the only way to get ahead in the world. That doesn't stop her from being the smartest person on the crew, at least until Robin joined. This actually makes her take the Rokushiki training seriously, as well as the MundaneUtility that Life Return provides.
** Vivi has to learn this herself when she learns the AwfulTruth about how much has changed in the three years she's been gone from Alabasta. That the only way to stop the war is to fight in it and defeat Crocodile and bring Baroque Works crashing down, but at the same time, by the time she and the Straw Hats get there, the fighting will have probably started and people aren't just going to probably die, but ''will'' die. As a MartialPacifist that she is, she's understandably a sobbing wreck at this revelation.
* WeakButSkilled: [[WorldOfBadass For a given definition of weak]], Nami and Vivi work together flawlessly and manage to [[spoiler:cripple Crocodile]]. Unfortunately, that just convinces him to stop holding back.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Subverted. While the starting narration of chapter 10 doesn't make any mention of Ms. Goldenweek (despite having followed along with Zoro and ended up at the top of the mountain in chapter 9), she is later stated to have stayed on Drum with Kureha and Dalton.
* WhatIf: While Luffy eating the Enten-Enten no Mi was a major change in canon, smaller actions end up having nearly as big changes.
** Because Luffy ended up on Nami's dinghy rather than simply crossing paths, it allows them to form a rapport that turns Nami's worldview on pirates on its head early on. This eventually turns into friendship and later an intimate romance. It also changes the Arlong Park arc by averting her defection.
** Nami gaining the will to fight early on in the series and losing her [[TheSoCalledCoward normal tactic of hiding behind the fighters unless otherwise occupied]] has her gain a bounty earlier than in canon, which along with Luffy is higher than their original starting bounties, 20 million and 50 million compared to their canon 16 million and 30 million respectively. Zoro hilariously inverts this by starting out ''lower'' at Luffy's original 30 million.
** Miss Valentine joins the crew at Whiskey Peak after Mr. 5 tries to kill her and Luffy.
** Since Luffy is so strong even without showcasing his real powers, Robin is willing to join the crew when she first meets them because all of a sudden, Crocodile isn't a sure bet. She is also immediately made uncomfortably aware that she stands no chance against him when she playfully attempts to take his hat and [[FlashStep doesn't even see him move]] before [[YouAreAlreadyDead his hand is on her hat]]. Luffy doesn't harm her in the slightest, but she still feels a cold chill due to the exchange.
** Without Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek can't properly take on the Straw Hats at Little Garden, forcing the pair to follow them in hopes of killing them later.
** Due to having two additional former Baroque Works members in the crew by the time they reached Alabasta, the [[ShaggyDogStory attempt to resolve the situation without bloodshed]] was shut down before it could start by having it explained in detail why Vivi's plan would not work.
* WhatTheHellHero: Admiral Kizaru gives a downplayed one to Smoker when he reveals that Loguetown was overrun by pirates less than a month after he abandoned his post there.
* WillfullyWeak: Luffy's Enten-Enten powers are so ridiculously powered that Luffy refuses to use them unless absolutely necessary. And thanks to the extra training, the only one who comes close in the East Blue is Smoker.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Despite giving Luffy his most difficult fight ever at the time, Crocodile was far weaker than he could have been due to both nearly two decades on Alabasta making him rusty and [[spoiler:having lost an eye to Vivi and Nami]].
* TheWomenAreSafeWithUs: Downplayed; while Nami notes that the Fishman Pirates never raped anyone from the Conomi Islands, she states that it's only because Arlong and his crew were too xenophobic to even consider it and postulates that an equally worse fate most likely awaited them. Especially when Nezumi himself implies that [[SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil he would buy Nojiko from Arlong]] for shooting him after he tried to steal Nami's stash of money meant to buy the islands back from Arlong.
* WorstAid: Dalton removes an arrow that was lodged in his thigh, causing him to rapidly start bleeding out.
* WorthyOpponent: The conversation that Robin and Hina had while fighting each other made it fairly clear that they enjoyed their battle.
* WouldntHurtAChild: Zoro doesn't attack Miss Goldenweek after defeating Mr. 3.
* WouldNotHitAGirl: Deconstructed. Sanji being the ChivalrousPervert that he is, can't abide a woman getting hit at all, even under controlled scenarios such as sparring, and thus tries to interfere with the girls' training. While Nami does admit that she is weaker than him, the crew does express concerns that Nami won't improve if she doesn't up her game and so his actions can hurt her in the long run, but Sanji refuses to simply sit by and they are forced to resort to restraining him so that the girls can get on with the training. Luffy has to reprimand him by having Valerie sit on him using her [[GravityMaster Kilo-Kilo fruit]]. Later on, he even tries to interfere with Chopper's battle with Miss Doublefinger. The latter was almost able to seduce him.
* WreckedWeapon:
** Nami's clima-tact is destroyed in the fight against Crocodile.
** Yubishari is destroyed while Zoro, Sanji, and Nami fight Vice Admiral Doberman.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: When Luffy tries to race ahead to Orange Town via Geppou, Nami grabs him and suplexes him into the deck of their ship, declaring it's his fault they've been without food for the last two days.
* YouAreTooLate:
** [[spoiler:When Luffy, Robin, and Zoro infiltrate Crocodile's hideout in Rain Dinners, they're caught in a trap and learn he actually left hours ago]].
** Played straight and {{inverted|trope}} when Vivi reaches Alubarna. Crocodile already had Mr. 2 impersonate her father and claim she's an imposter, and later it's revealed that by plowing through the Baroque Works blockade, they were too far inland to stop Mr. 2 from razing Nanohana to the ground.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Krieg decides his crew's weakness is why he was forced to flee the Grand Line and promptly decides to kill them all with his poison gas attack.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: Robin is outright incredulous at how naive Vivi's plan for stopping Alabasta's civil war is.
* YoureNotMyType: Valerie admits that while she does find Luffy handsome, he's not her type, acting as a ShipSinking for the possibility of her joining Luffy's {{polyamory}}.
