''Never Say Never'' is a ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'' fic by [[http://archiveofourown.org/users/hunterofcomedy/pseuds/hunterofcomedy hunterofcomedy]]. In it the events of the first game seem to proceed as usual, however, Mukuro Ikusaba begins having doubts about her sister's plan. Things truly change however when Naegi saves Mukuro when she's disguised as Junko, and Sayaka does not die from a stab wound...

The story assumed you have already played the first game, so beware of spoilers.

Also, [[JustForFun/IThoughtThatWas do not confuse]] this fic with a song from a [[Music/JustinBieber certain singer]].

The story went dead in 2020 at 56 chapters due to unspecified real-life problems from the author. In 2023, the author started writing the fic again.

----
!!This fic has examples of:

* AccidentalMurder:
** Sayaka's murder scene is borrowed directly from the manga, Leon accidentally wounds her with a knife while trying to disarm her.
** Same goes to Mondo, he attacks Chihiro in a blind rage after the latter unknowingly pushes his BerserkButton.
* AdaptationalJerkass:
** Ishimaru becomes a self-righteous jerkass after the second trial, unlike the dormant EmptyShell that he becomes in the game.
** Subverted with Byakuya, despite his InsufferableGenius [[JerkassHasAPoint behaviour]] being the same as in the game, the lack of deaths makes him appear more insensitive than he really is.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Downplayed with both, [[InsufferableGenius Byakuya]] and [[ManipulativeBitch Celeste]].
** Byakuya is still the same InsufferableGenius as he is in the game, but most of his jerkass moments have [[JerkassHasAPoint good reasoning behind it]]. Him altering the crime scene in chapter 2 [[spoiler: was actually a gambit to expose Toko's identity as Genocide Jack/Jill and to test Makoto's intelligence.]] His secret is that [[spoiler: he's been financially helping outcast members of his family]].
** The story downplays some of Celeste's NoSympathy moments, having most of them aimed at the culprits of their respective trials. She's still a massive bitch, however.
* AllLovingHero: Even more so than in the game. Makoto isn't the HopeBringer for nothing.
* AmbiguousGenderIdentity: After the students [[UnsettlingGenderReveal discovered Chihiro is biologically male]] during the second trial, everyone avoids using gender-specific pronoun out of respect for Chihiro since they don't know how Chihiro identifies herself.
* TheAtoner:
** After she's betrayed by her sister, [[HeelFaceTurn Mukuro]] gains the determination to keep everyone alive to atone for the crimes she committed to them and to beat her sister in her own twisted game.
** [[spoiler: Mondo is so remorseful over attacking Chihiro, he promise he'll make things up with her after she wakes up from her coma.]]
* AttractiveBentGender: Played With. Chihiro identifies as female, but is biologically male and covers this up by deliberately styling herself in a typically feminine way, so much that Mondo can't take the idea that Chihiro isn't biologically female out of his head even after he discovers her secret. This is probably a reason why Hifumi has a crush on Alter Ego.
* BaitAndSwitch: During the third trial, when the students are [[spoiler: unable to determine wherever Hifumi or Celeste is lying]] Monokuma propose to do a [[VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony Scrum Debate]] only for [[spoiler: Mukuro]] to reject the offer.
* BecomingTheMask: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Mukuro starts to act less and less like Junko after she's saved from Monokuma’s death trap. The rest of the students take notice of this but mistake it for Junko the Fashionista's BeneathTheMask.
* BerserkButton: Celeste [[TranquilFury boils internally]] after her real name is revealed in front of everyone. Thankfully for her, nobody notices it.
* BloodKnight: Mukuro feels that she perhaps enjoys being put into a combat situation and protecting others using her skills a bit ''too'' much. The implication slightly horrifies her because it would make her similar with her sister.
* ButtMonkey: Whenever Leon tries to eat a sandwich, expect the universe to deny it. He's also the OnlySaneMan when he's forced to tag along with Mondo and Taka in their "dick measurement contest".
* TheCameo: The DVD motives showcase [[spoiler: characters that appear on the hit-list of VideoGame/DanganronpaAnotherEpisodeUltraDespairGirls.]]
* CaptainOblivious: Ishimaru in chapter 3 is completely unaware that his attempts at controlling the group are only [[NiceJobBreakingItHero bringing more tension]] to the students. He’s also unaware that his classmates are lying to him just to get some breathers. You can't really blame him, considering the [[SanitySlippage delusional state]] that he is in.
* CareerEndingInjury:
** [[spoiler: Sayaka later admits the same pain of never be able to sing on the stage ever again as a result of her [[ScarsAreForever scar]] on her stomach.]]
** Mukuro, still in her 'Junko' disguise, uses the injury on her hand to point out that her modelling career is over to [[YouAreNotAlone support]] a depressed Sayaka.
* ChekhovsGun: At the start of Chapter 3, [[spoiler: Mondo put anything that could potentially be used to harm an unconscious Chihiro inside the locker in the Nurse's Office and seal it with duct tape. Towards the end of the chapter, this would be yet another SpannerInTheWorks for Celeste's plan.]]
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: A couple of these are doled out after the third trial concludes.
** [[spoiler: As punishment for his KnightTemplar stint, Ishimaru is stripped of his disciplinary duties and forced to act like a normal student.]]
** [[spoiler: As punishment for her attempted murder, Celeste has her "Celestia Ludenberg" image destroyed, and is forced to take up the name Taeko Yasuhiro once more.]]
* CovertPervert:
** Chihiro's inner thoughts are actually much more perverted than once might think. {{Justified|Trope}} since she's constantly sexually frustrated due to hiding the fact that she's transgender and being surrounded by the [[HeadTurningBeauty incredibly attractive girls]].
** Hina decides to [[ThePeepingTom go peeping on the boys]] with Toko and Celeste while [[OutdoorBathPeeping they're bathing]]. She spends a long time EatingTheEyeCandy and imagining what each of one is hiding under their {{Modesty Towel}}s.
** Even [[AloofDarkHairedGirl usually aloof Celeste]], who initially only joined Hina as a ploy to gain her trust, is actually interested once Byakuya suffers a WardrobeMalfunction and starts EatingTheEyeCandy.
--->'''Celeste:''' ''Well'', it seems Byakuya's [[{{Narcissist}} ego]] is [[BiggerIsBetterInBed well founded]].
* CreepyCrossdresser: Right before the second motive is revealed, [[spoiler: Monokuma ends up dressing up as a terrifying drag queen, much to everyone’s disgust. This is just to torment [[UsefulNotes/{{Transgender}} Chihiro]].]]
* CrimeOfPassion: Just like in canon, Mondo snaps and reacts violently when Chihiro reveals [[AdaptationalGenderIdentity her secret]], but Leon's words from earlier cause Mondo to avoid dealing a fatal blow onto Chihiro and only put her into a coma. This incident serves as a wake-up call for Mondo to keep his anger under control.
* CringeComedy: Some of the lighter, funny moments in the fic make use of this.
* CruelMercy: [[spoiler: At the end of the third class trial, Hifumi exacts his revenge on Celeste for corrupting him and driving him to murder by forcing her to live in the hell of her own creation.]]
* ADayInTheLimelight: Due to its EveryoneLives nature. Every student who died in the game gets quite a lot of focus.
* TheDragon: After Ishimaru goes KnightTemplar, Monokuma declares him his enforcer and goes on vacation. Everyone tries to tell Ishimaru he's playing right into Monokuma's hands, but it sails over his head.
* DramaticIrony: Mukuro and Sakura are both [[RegretfulTraitor remorseful traitors]] to the group, but neither of them are aware of each other's betrayal. Sure enough, Monokuma takes advantage of this for the motive of Ch. 4.
* DespairEventHorizon: Even without deaths, the students are still prone to fall into despair.
** Mukuro fall into despair after she's betrayed by her sister and is abandoned to her fate in the Killing Game. [[HeelRealization She does not enjoy the pain]] [[VillainousBSOD of betrayal at all]].
** Poor Sayaka, not only was she the first one to break down and try to commit murder, she later becomes very remorseful of her actions on top of being unable to walk because of her injury and blood loss.
** Leon crosses it the moment Makoto discovers the meaning behind Sayaka's dying message.
** Mondo completely breakdown out of regret for attacking Chihiro and having betrayed the group by trying to graduate.
** Celeste falls completely into despair after the truth of the Bullying Trials is revealed, and confesses without a fight.
* DumbassHasAPoint:
** Granted, Leon is more BookDumb than dumbass, but during the second Class Trial he does make a very valid point that leaves everyone, even [[SmugSnake Byakuya]], stunned in silence.
-->'''Leon''': Okay so, let's pretend for a second that you’re right, and I'm not saying you are, but hear me out on this one! How would Toko locking herself in her room solve anything? I mean, if she did have a split personality, and I'm not saying she really does! What would stop her other personality from unlocking the door from the inside? [[invoked]][[FridgeLogic It doesn't make any sense!]]
** Hiro, who is a dumbass in general, is the first one to vocalize that if Toko is correct that bullying trials have no blackened, nobody can graduate from them.
* EasyAmnesia: Played with. [[spoiler: Once Chihiro finally wakes up from the coma, she understandably suffers from TraumaInducedAmnesia since she doesn't remember much of the event of chapter 2. However, she does remember Celeste’s real name.]]
* EstablishingSeriesMoment: The prologue starts by showing Junko mocking the students over the fact that the person they trusted the most was TheMole, only to reveal that ''everybody'' is [[EveryoneLives still alive]] and immediately jump to their friend's defence before the story reveals that their friend and saviour is [[HeelFaceTurn Mukuro]] [[TheAtoner Ikusaba]].
* EnragedByIdiocy: Yeah, the students aren't particularly amused by Hiro's level of intelligence, especially during the trials.
* EverybodyLives: By the time of the sixth trial, everyone is still alive, despite nine characters having died by that point in the original game.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Leon and Sayaka are almost always together most of the story with several ShipTease moments between the two. Nobody was surprised when the two start flirting in the middle of the thrid-trial.
* FailureGambit: Byakuya actions in chapter 2 turns out to be this. [[spoiler: He discovers early on that Toko is the infamous serial killer, Genocide Jack. He alters the crime scene to make it look like Genocide Jack made it and brings Makoto to the library to study about the killer. Lastly, he purposely leaves some mistakes in the crime scene for Makoto to pick up on it and test his intelligence. He successfully exposes Genocide Jill to the group]].
* FixFic: A fic where EveryoneLives, but it also patches up a few minor plot holes and head-scratchers from the game.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Lots of them. A few examples include:
** [[ForegoneConclusion The prologue]] alone show all of the students are still alive and all of them mentioning their reason to defence Mukuro.
** Chapter 2 has Mondo, Taka and Chihiro backing each other up against Monokuma when he threatens an injured Sayaka before any of the three becomes friends.
*** Later on, during a morning meeting we have: Chihiro sitting in between Mondo and Taka; Hifumi next to Celeste and Toko next to Byakuya. Before any of them developed any bond with each other. [[spoiler: Is at this point that mastermind!Junko realize the effects of the amnesia are wearing off.]]
*** Celeste and Hina spent time together at the pool while exploring the second floor, foreshadowing the friendship the two develop in Chapter 3.
* ForWantOfANail: The story heavily relies on this; the farther you go into the story, the more different it becomes from the original game.
** Sayaka ends up cut across the stomach rather than stabbed and knife left inside of her, reducing the severity of her injury.
** Leon makes use of towels in an attempt to stop Sayaka's bleeding, unknowingly saving her life.
** Makoto saves "Junko" from Monokuma’s trap. This allows her to save both Leon's and Sayaka's lives.
** This also applies to the background story. Chihiro was bullied at a young age for not being masculine enough and started cross-dressing to stop suffering from it. They ended up embracing their feminine side and currently identifies as UsefulNotes/{{Transgender}}.
** A conversation with Leon causes Mondo to hold back when he attacks Chihiro, sparing her life.
** Mondo [[spoiler: screams for help shortly]] after he has moved Chihiro's unconscious body to the girl's lockers as he knew that she was still alive.
** Chapter 3 is where the story diverges greatly from the game due to multiple different circumstances, [[spoiler: from having everyone’s secret revealed, Ishimaru becoming a KnightTemplar, the reveal of a 16th student much earlier, and the possibility of the Mastermind being a student]].
** The motive of Ch. 4 is very different from the one in the game. [[spoiler: Monokuma offers one student a chance to escape if they discover who the traitor is; if they guess right, the traitor gets executed and they get to leave; but if they get it wrong, then they'll get executed instead.]]
* ForegoneConclusion: The fic starts with InMediasRes, where it's chronologically around the sixth trial, showing that all students survive their murder attempts or executions, make peace with each other's faults, and immediately trust Mukuro despite her being revealed as TheMole.
* ForgivingTheAccidentalPervert: When Hifumi gets caught by Sayaka, "Junko", and Kyoko trying to talk to Alter Ego when the former explicitly told him not to, [[ScreamsLikeALittleGirl Hifumi's screams]] attract Makoto and Leon's attention. The boys rush to the bathhouse thinking the girls are in trouble, leading them to accidentally get a glimpse of the girls in {{Modesty Towel}}s. While Sayaka and "Junko" have a NakedFreakOut, Kyoko is the only one who remains calm and actually tells them to keep watch, being more focused on calling out Hifumi for going against orders, though Makoto does faintly notice the embarrassment in her eyes.
* FreudianTrio: [[JapaneseDelinquents Mondo]], [[TheAce Taka]] and [[MoralityPet Chihiro]] are the Id, the Superego and the Ego respectively.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes:
** Ishimaru post-second trial has such an overbearing self-righteousness, Byakuya agrees to scheme with other students behind his back just to get some breathers.
** It's very clear that the students don't really like Hiro, even [[NiceGuy Makoto]] tolerate him at best. It doesn't help that he tends to make very insensitive comments at the other students, wherever they’re intentional or not. And his stupidity only a source of annoyances for the rest of the group.
* HairTriggerTemper: Mondo Owada's FatalFlaw. Not only is it shown in his EstablishingCharacterMoment, but Chapter 2 also spends a good amount of time showing how prone to violence he can be. It reaches its logical conclusion when Mondo [[spoiler: nearly]] kills Chihiro in a blind rage. Afterwards, he has a ''massive'' MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment and begins working on reining himself in.
* HeadsIWinTailsYouLose: [[spoiler: The Bullying Trials]] are ultimately revealed to be this, [[spoiler: as only a 'blackened' can graduate and said trials don't have a blackened culprit]], but the entire class is completely unaware of this until the third trial where [[spoiler: Toko (of all people) reveals the secret to everyone and causes Celeste to confess.]]
* HeelRealization:
** [[spoiler: After Celeste's first plan fails, Hifumi starts to have second thoughts on their actions and tries to encourage Celeste to turn themselves in and confess.]]
** [[spoiler: At the end of the third trial, Ishimaru realizes how much damage his KnightTemplar streak has caused and returns to normal.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: At the end of the third trial, Ishimaru attempts to sacrifice himself to save Celeste and atone for his KnightTemplar stint, but the others talk him out of it.]]
* HiddenDepths: Kyoko really doesn't like manipulating others and withholding crucial information, but she sees it as a justified NecessarilyEvil.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Mukuro and Kyoko develop a very strong bond of trust during the killing game.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: As much of an asshole Byakuya can be, [[spoiler: he's been secretly giving money to outcasted members of his family]], not that he would ever admit it. [[spoiler: He even saves Sayaka when he catches pillow she threw at Monokuma, who would've executed her for such a minor offense!]]
* AHouseDivided: Far more noticeable than in the game. There's a lot of internal conflict and distrust between the students.
* HumiliationConga:
** Both Leon and Sayaka are disparaged numerous times because they are confirmed attempted murderers, intentionally or not. Sayaka also gets her secret revealed in front of the others which, despite being anonymous, is so damningly pointing at her that everyone now knows she once [[spoiler: ruined a potential rival's career, even if they don't know her fans took it too far by [[ColdBloodedTorture pouring acid down her throat]]]].
** [[spoiler: Celestia's plan on chapter 3 simply [[SpannerInTheWorks does not go as planned]], and whenever she tries to improvise and salvage her plan, she's still on the receiving end of another spanner. She even goes as far as to call it the proof that MurphysLaw does exist and that the [[CosmicPlaything universe hated her.]]]] [[spoiler: And that's before she discovers even if she wins the bullying trial, she won't be allowed to leave as (having not actually killed anyone) she's not a blackened. After that it overlaps with TraumaCongaLine, see her [[Characters/NeverSayNever character page]] for more details.]]
* InSpiteOfANail: Despite the heavy diversion the story has from canon, all of the victims and culprits are exactly the same as in canon.
* InterruptedBath:
** Mukuro [[BathingBeauty really enjoys showering]] but it's something of a RunningGag that her ShowerScene is either interrupted or she doesn't even get the chance to bathe.
** Both PublicBathhouseScene get interrupted by an intrusion from the member of the opposite sex. Toko for the boys, Hifumi for the girls.
* InterruptedSuicide: Sakura physically subdues [[spoiler: Celeste]] before she can attack Monokuma and commit SuicideByCop.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** Ishimaru post-second trial is a self-righteous jerk, but he gets this a lot. No matter how bad the culprits feel about it, they ''did'' try to commit murder and Ishimaru's unwillingness to sweep that under the rug like everyone else is not hard to sympathize with.
** Byakuya is this all the time, much to everyone's frustration. [[spoiler: In fact, [[KickTheDog as cruel as he was towards Chihiro]] at the start of Chapter 4, he's absolutely right that Chihiro is ill-suited to being TheLeader of the group.]]
** Taeko is a raging jerk with no filter, but she also has a point that the fourth motive has no actual punishment in place if no one decides to do it and that everyone would be better off not giving into the Mastermind's game.
* KnightTemplar: After the second trial, Ishimaru loses it and begins forcing a draconian set of rules on the other students in a desperate attempt to prevent any more murders.
* LastMinuteReprieve: After Mukuro gives first aid to a dying Sayaka, she then runs to the court just in time to stop Leon from being executed.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Despite being an alternative retelling of the first game, the author assumes you're already familiar with the original story. As such, the fic doesn't bother to hide secrets like Chihiro's gender, Celeste's real name, Mukuro disguising herself as her sister, Junko being the mastermind, etc. However, the story does spoils two major plot points from ''Literature/DanganronpaZero'': [[spoiler: Ryoko Otonashi's real identity as Junko Enoshima and Junko killing Yasuke Matsuda]].
* LawfulStupid: When Ishimaru goes KnightTemplar, he is unwilling to allow anyone to bend rules such as "no running in the hallway" and "no profanity"... even when people are missing and potentially dead.
* LighterAndSofter: Only because everyone survives, otherwise it retains the same dark theme of the game.
* LimitedWardrobe: Lampshade when Sayaka noticed that everyone always uses the same clothes every day. She strongly believes that the Mastermind forced them into this. The sole exception is Mukuro in her 'Junko' disguise, for [[TheFashionista obvious reasons]]. Oddly enough, Celeste has different gothic lolita dresses in her wardrobe, yet she only uses one for most of the story.
* LoopholeAbuse: Mukuro figures out that culprits in bullying trials will not graduate since they are not blackened, but Monokuma threatens her into silence. This does nothing, however, to stop Toko from figuring it out on her own and telling everyone.
* LostFoodGrievance: Poor Leon just can never have his sandwich. [[RunningGag Ever.]]
* TheMainCharactersDoEverything: Averted. In contrast with the game, the protagonists (Makoto, Mukuro and Kyoko) don't find all of the clues while investigating, during the trial all of the students take their turn to reveal the clues they found while also putting their input in the discussion. Played straight and justified for the first trial, only Makoto and Kyoko bother to investigate since everyone else assumed Makoto was the culprit. WordOfGod stated how he dislikes the use of this trope in gaming in general.
* MamaBear: [[spoiler: The moment [[ShrinkingViolet Chihiro]] discovers that Alter Ego was confiscated by Kiyotaka [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness she becomes very furious]].]] To say nothing of discovering [[spoiler: Hifumi told it about porn]].
* ManlyTears: Leon cries not because he would not be executed, but because Sayaka survives.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: Everyone. They all [[TraumaCongaLine go through hell]] the entire story, but they all grow to better people as time moves on.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Mukuro decides to go against Junko after her sister attempts to kill her, despite promising Mukuro that she would instead be dropped through a trap door and survive. Mukuro also believes her continued act as "Junko" and attempts to keep everyone alive are her penance for playing along to Junko's desires.
* ModestyTowel
** Mondo is wearing one when Chihiro asks him to train her. Mondo is very nervous since he's half-naked in front of a girl, not knowing yet that Chihiro is actually a boy and isn't attracted to men.
** Both {{Public Bathhouse Scene}} has the bathing characters wearing their towels. Mukuro, in particular, makes sure to keep one towel tied on her hair, since she's disguised as Junko and the hair is actually a wig and getting it wet would ruin it.
* MotiveMisidentification: Taeko thinks that the reason 'Junko' always goes out of her way to comfort the would-be blackened after each trial is as part of a plan to win everyone's trust. In truth, Mukuro doesn't even (consciously) notice she's doing that until Taeko calls her on it.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Both Leon and Sayaka are horrified over their attempted murders of each other.
** Mondo becomes very remorseful over attacking Chihiro and failing to keep his promise.
** [[spoiler: After Taka discovers he indirectly drove Celeste into committing murder and realizing he treated everyone very unfairly for the last couple of weeks. Taka breaks down in horror in what he has become.]]
** [[spoiler: Celeste/Taeko doesn't actually regret having tried to graduate and getting everyone killed, instead she regrets manipulating and ultimately breaking Hina's heart, seeing Hina becoming a vengeful monster is more than she can handle.]]
* MythologyGag: The title of the story is named after the opening song of ''Anime/DanganronpaTheAnimation''.
** During the second trial, Monokuma calls Genocide Jill "the scissor cutty-cutty bitch", a reference to another fic written by hunterofcomedy, ''Fanfic/TheUltimateHope''.
** The story occasionally mentions executions that were unused in the game. Examples so far includes [[BearTrap Sayaka]], [[SnowMeansDeath Byakuya]] and [[SquashedFlat Toko]].
** During the third trial, Monokuma propose the students to do a [[VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony Scrum Debate]] only for [[spoiler: Mukuro]] to reject the offer.
** Monokuma mentions two ideas he had for executions which are a volcano barbeque and a climb up a thorny vine, which were the respective executions of Teruteru and Kirumi.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Junko allowing Mukuro to sit the first trial out [[spoiler: allows the latter to discover that Sayaka is still alive despite her wounds and nurse her back to health, thereby rendering the trial moot right before the execution could be carried out.]]
* OnlyAFleshWound: Averted. Sayaka manages to survive her slash wound despite bleeding out for hours on end, but it is noted that she would have died had Leon [[ForWantOfANail not used towels as improvised bandages and had Mukuro not found her and given her first aid]]. The injury [[YouCanBarelyStand cripples]] her for several days.
** Also averted with [[spoiler: Chihiro. She spends several days in a coma from Oowada's head wound]].
* TheParagon: Beside Makoto, Mukuro in her "Junko" disguise is seen as this by the others because she's unyielding toward the mastermind's threats to her, becoming a protective figure toward the others because of her unexpected skills and her cheerful encouragements.
* PetTheDog: Even at his worst, Ishimaru tries his best to be nice to Alter Ego and is ashamed whenever he makes 'her' feel bad.
* PornStash: Turns out Leon's secret is that he has a ''huge'' porn stash, apparently large enough to fill an entire section of a library. His secret is arguably the most harmless within the group.
** [[spoiler: Sayaka also has a porn stash and is a YaoiFangirl, much to Leon's shock.]]
* PublicBathhouseScene:
** A glorious and unexpected role-reversal from the game. It's the guys[[note]]specifically, Makoto, Mondo, Ishimaru, Byakuya, Hifumi and Yasuhiro[[/note]] who go to the bathhouse while Hina, Celeste and Toko are the ones who take a peep. Also, the former two almost get caught due to Toko switching to Jill.
** Mukuro, Sayaka and Kyoko later go to the bath together, not only to bathe but also so Sayaka can meet Alter Ego. Nobody peeps on them, instead, they catch Hifumi trying to steal Alter Ego's laptop that was hidden in the lockers. Makoto and Leon confuse Hifumi's [[ScreamsLikeALittleGirl high pitched scream]] with the girls and rush inside the bathhouse for an AccidentalPervert moment where they see the three girls clad only in {{Modesty Towel}}s. The girls have a minor NakedFreakOut, with even [[TheStoic Kyoko]] blushing faintly at Makoto seeing her wearing so little.
* RoleEndingMisdemeanor: Briefly mentioned InUniverse in Chapter 3 [[spoiler: as Byakuya cruelly points out Leon's and Sayaka's careers are destroyed because of their actions.]]
* RunningGag:
** Leon's attempts at eating a sandwich are constantly ruined. The story even has a tag lampshading it, ''Sandwich Denial''.
** Several characters suffer from sleep deprivation for different reasons.
** Sayaka joking about her "psychic powers", it gets to the point where her friends are seriously wondering if she really is a psychic.
* SanitySlippage: Ishimaru does not take Oowada's [[spoiler: attempted]] murder of Chihiro and his lying to him that well, nor does he appreciate the other students taking his attempts at keeping everyone together for granted. It's more or less what changes him into his "Kiyondo" persona.
* SherlockScan: Kyoko, being the [[GreatDetective Ultimate Detective]], makes use of this very frequently. However, being an AmnesiacHero, she has no idea why she has said ability.
* ShipTease:
** Post-first Class Trial, Leon is assigned to look over Sayaka's recovery as punishment for attempting murder, the two become very close friends.
** Kyoko would start to really like Makoto due to his intelligence and general optimism. Likewise, Makoto himself admires Kyoko for her intelligence and support, even describing her as a manga heroine.
* ShoutOut:
** "[[PleasePutSomeClothesOn Public indecency is]] ''[[WebVideo/DanganronpaAbridgedThing not]]'' [[WebVideo/DanganronpaAbridgedThing welcome in a school environment!]]"
** WordOfGod has confirmed that Sayaka's secret motive was inspired by an episode of ''Anime/HellGirl'' although modified so that she doesn't come out as unsympathetic.
** In chapter 3, Mukuro uses a [[VideoGame/MetalGear cardboard box]] as a decoy to distract Mondo long enough to sneak past him, and can't believe it actually works.
** During the same chapter, Monokuma [[VillainHasAPoint correctly points out]] that unless people like Byakuya believe in [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic friendship is magic]], Kiyotaka's plan to unite the group will just not work.
** Monokuma borrows Zero II's catchphrase from ''VisualNovel/ZeroTimeDilemma'' during the third trial.
---> '''Monokuma''': Life is... simply unfair, don’t you think?
** For Chapter 4, Monokuma says that he has a "[[Creator/MNightShyamalan Shyamalan twist]]" prepared for the motive. The PlotTwist? [[spoiler: There's actually two traitors, but neither the traitors nor the rest of the students know about it yet.]]
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler: On Chapter 3, Mondo unintentionally ends up ruining Celeste's plans by knocking Hifumi out [[TheDoorSlamsYou with a door]] before he can attack Kiyotaka.]]
* SuicideByCop: [[spoiler: Celeste attempts to kill herself by attacking Monokuma and violating the "no attacking the headmaster" rule at the end of the third trial, but Sakura stops her.]]
* SwitchingPOV: While the story is mostly told from Mukuro's P.O.V., all characters have their share in the spotlight.
* TakeThat: Mukuro interrupting Monokuma about the Scrum Debate is a minor shot against fanfics that implement gameplay mechanics into the story, citing that it ruins the flow of the story.
* TearsOfRemorse:
** Mukuro cries over Sayaka's "corpse", believing they were both abandoned for their sins.
** Sayaka weeps upon discovering that she nearly killed the entire group by trying to commit a murder.
** Mondo breaks down once he realizes he nearly killed Chihiro and cries again once he’s caught in the second trial.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Kiyotaka becomes a self-righteous jerk after the second trial because of Mondo's "betrayal".
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Celeste lose all of her composure the moment Hifumi proposes to turn themselves in and confess their plans. In her fragile state of mind, she tries to kill Hifumi, only for him to catch the hammer and [[TheDogBitesBack turn against her]].]] [[spoiler: She also loses her composure during the subsequent trial, with the narration describing it as her mask exploding.]]
* WhamLine:
** [[spoiler: When Kyoko bring Mukuro to the secret room, she confront "Junko" about her lies.]]
---> [[spoiler:'''Kyoko''': I know you've been lying to us. Tell me who you really are.]]
** [[spoiler: After Chihiro wakes up from her coma, she calls Celeste by her ''real'' name. She's understandably shocked.]]
--->[[spoiler: '''Chihiro''': Thank you... ''Taeko''.]]
** [[spoiler: The biggest WhamLine in the story is delivered by Toko when she reveals the real purpose behind the Bullying Trials, the revelation hits everyone like a fucking train and causes Celeste to give up and confess]].
---> [[spoiler: '''Toko''': W-Well, it doesn't make sense that e-either of them would w-want to h-have a class trial right n-now!]]\
[[spoiler: '''Junko''': And why's that? Why wouldn't either Celeste or Hifumi want a class trial?!]]\
[[spoiler:'''Toko''': B-Because neither of them are b-b-blackened! Th-That's why it d-doesn't make s-sense!]]
* WhatAPieceOfJunk: The laptop where Alter-Ego is installed looks like an old computer, but as noted by Chihiro it's more powerful than even her own high-end computer back at her home.
* WhatIf: Notable in that the fic takes many cues from another WhatIf scenario of the canon, ''Literature/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavocIf''; Makoto saves Mukuro from the Spears of Gungnir not because of his memory returning from being zapped by the fake escape switch, but because his natural kindness alarms him of Monokuma's trap; Mukuro betrays Junko but does not immediately reveal herself as the Ultimate Soldier because of the circumstances; EverybodyLives but not by brute-forcing the Monokuma army; etc.
* WhatTheHellHero: Nobody is okay with Ishimaru’s self-righteous attitude in chapter 3, [[spoiler: and everyone is outraged when he reveals everyone's secrets in a delusional attempt to bring everyone together. His strict rules only make things worse for everyone and he's not even aware of it]].
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: After Ishimaru goes full-blown KnightTemplar, his hair turns white just like it did in canon when he became Kiyondo. Whenever he temporarily comes back to his senses, his hair reverts to its natural black.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Leon becomes incredibly terrified of Monokuma after he is saved at the last second from his execution. Unfortunately for him, he must deal with the bear for the rest of the story.
