Rather than being (generally speaking heavily fictionalized) takes on real people/heroes as is done in most other films of their kind like ''Braveheart'' and ''Rob Roy''. Maximus having elements drawn from Marcus Nonius Macrinus, Narcissus, Spartacus, Cincinnatus, and Maximus of Hispania.
