Examples of characterization changing dramatically DependingOnTheWriter in WebOriginal series.
----

* ''Website/ChannelAwesome'':
** The on-screen characters of most Internet reviewers usually remain constant - and then there's WebVideo/FilmBrain. If it's a review show that he has a part in, he can be every bit as snarky and malevolent as his fellow ''Website/ChannelAwesome'' reviewers. In the anniversary specials - which are usually written by Doug Walker - he becomes the ultimate hyperactive {{keet}} whose catchphrase seems to be "I'm excited!" (Not that Mathew minds this; he actually admits the latter is closer to his Real Life personality.)
** Speaking of Doug, he writes WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic as a weak, pathetic loser who always folds whenever someone else wants to do a crossover. In other shows ([[RealLifeWritesThePlot usually when there's only time for a Doug cameo and not a whole review]]), he suddenly has the backbone to ignore any request.
** WebVideo/ObscurusLupa is portrayed differently depending on who's writing her lines. On her own show, she's fully capable of giving proper analysis on films & TV shows, but she does have her moments of immaturity. In the anniversary specials, she's a level-headed ActionGirl, to the point where she was the OnlySaneMan in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee''. In any other crossover, Lupa is pretty much a [[ManChild child in an adult's body]], being easily entertained by low-brow humor.
** WebVideo/BennettTheSage can come across as a malevolent and evil force when he pops up in another reviewer's video, even appearing as the devil in one instance. But in his own regular series he's just a regular analytical snarker only interested in mocking what he watches rather than tormenting others.
* Franchise/TheFearMythos is practically built on this trope. Anyone can create their own [[TheVerse verse]], without needing permission from anyone else. The only real canon it has are the verses, and even then you can take a [[EldritchAbomination Fear]] from that and interpret it as you like.
* ''Platform/{{GoAnimate}}'':
** While WesternAnimation/{{Caillou}} is voiced by Ivy for a number of users, such as [=OfficerPoop247=], many users will use the David setting instead. Also, Caillou can be anywhere from just his canonical BrattyHalfPint self [[{{Flanderization}} taken up a notch]] to a dangerous [[TheSociopath sociopath]] with a HairTriggerTemper (the latter is more common).
** Parent characters can range from underreacting (kill your teacher and get grounded, depending on the number of years), to overly stern, to somewhat {{abusive|Parents}}, to [[AdultsAreUseless every bit as sociopathic as their kids.]]
** Rosie can either be an innocent (if TooDumbToLive) victim of Caillou's schemes, to ratting on him the first chance she gets, to being every bit as abusive as Boris.
** [[Series/BarneyAndFriends Barney]] can either be one, single jerkhole or there be two separate Barneys (one evil and one good). Also, Barney can range from fat to skinny (If two Barneys are there, they're usually skinny).
** Dora's appearance can vary wildly. Boris and Rosie's appearances also depend. When it comes to Caillou, [[YourSizeMayVary his size is the one that varies]].
** Boris can range from just a stressed out guy who has to put up with his son's behavior to a [[AxCrazy psychotic]] [[{{Jerkass}} turd]] with a [[HairTriggerTemper boiling personality]] that [[AbusiveParents couldn't care less if Caillou died]].
** Leo can either be an insidious bully to Caillou and hate his guts for being a Baby Show character, to not caring at all, to joining Caillou with his antics, to being just as bad as Caillou. His relationship with Caillou also varies, as covered with the first three. The fourth one is when it varies.
** [[AdultsAreUseless The teachers can either be completely clueless and let them go to the bathroom (which would always really mean "Can I ditch school?" or "Can I switch on the Fire Alarm?")]], to aware what the kids are doing.
** Speaking of the teachers, Miss Martin and Miss Christina will either portrayed as just stressed out teachers who have to deal with their student's bad behavior or they will be portrayed as [[SadistTeacher mean spirited teachers]] who have their students expelled for petty reasons and have no problem with physically harming them.
** Doris will either be [[NoSympathy unsympathetic towards Caillou's grievances and let the people who abuse him do so]] or [[MamaBear actually willing to defend and help him]].
* Because ''WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends'' has such little continuity and focuses primarily on slapstick humor than anything else, the exact personality of its characters tend to vary.
** Lumpy is sometimes a KindheartedSimpleton, LethallyStupid, or an outright {{Jerkass}}.
** Petunia often changes between just preferring tidiness, to being a stingy NeatFreak or even an unstable germaphobe.
** Most relationships in HTF oftentimes varies. For instance, Cuddles and Giggles are either an OfficialCouple or complete strangers to each other with Giggles dating another character instead.
** Because of his status as TheEveryman, Toothy's exact personality is subject to change. Sometimes, he is the GenericGuy who receives no development beyond suffering [[EyeScream eye injuries]]. Othertimes, he is distinctly characterized as a crybaby. Sometimes, he is mischievous like Cuddles. Other times, he is the OnlySaneMan.
** Pop is either an incompetent dad who can not take care of his son no matter how he tries, a relatively good parent who only fails because he lives in a CrapsackWorld, or a downright AbusiveDad who would deliberately harm Cub just to keep him quiet.
** Sniffles is either a genius or a nerd at best. His intelligence also varies - sometimes, he is TheStraightMan who has to deal with everybody's antics, while in other episodes, he comes off as one of the dumber characters.
** The show doesn't seem to able to make up its mind on whether or not Lumpy, Giggles, The Mole, and Pop should face the same amount of abuse most other characters endure or narrowly avoid it most of the time due to dumbluck.
** Flaky is either the OnlySaneMan, a character whose ProperlyParanoid at best, or just an unstable porcupine who is just as careless and ignorant.
** How blind is The Mole is somewhat inconsistent. Sometimes, he appears to have limited vision at best. On most other occasions however, he cannot even use his other senses.
** The identity of Flippy sometimes vary, depending on the story or product. At times, Fliqpy is well-established as his own consciousness separate from Flippy. Other times, he is treated as if they are the same character, to the extent where Fliqpy sometimes bare a face or voice similar to Good Flippy. And in rare cases, Good Flippy is shown to be just as murderous or apathetic, with one episode having Good Flippy purposefully killing Flaky over DisproportionateRetribution.
** Lifty and Shifty are either genuine kleptomaniacs or poverty-stricken brothers stealing out of necessity.
* {{Invoked|Trope}} by MediaNotes/JennyEverywhere - she's an open source superhero specifically designed for anybody to interpret any way they wish. She is described on The Shifter Archive (a fansite) as [[GenkiGirl having a ready smile, good body image and loads of confidence and charisma]], but that could be ignored if the writer chose.
* At least one person in the ''Literature/MetamorKeep'' verse tries to keep their stories between their own characters or only have the {{NPC}}s cameo or be referenced at most specifically to avoid this from happening.
* ALL the characters of ''WebVideo/MrDeity'' alternate between speaking about Earth and humans as characters in a film and treating them as real people, even within the same episode.
* On ''Roleplay/NeoPokeforum'', different [[DungeonMaster masters]] have different takes on the world. Do Pokemon [[PokemonSpeak speak Pokemon]]? Just how sentient are they? What do cities look like? Are goverments honest or corrupt? Gym Leaders, on the other hand, escape this treatment, because they are all played by one master.
* The only official rule at the Website/SCPFoundation site is "[[UnreliableCanon there is no canon]]": any single article on a particular anomaly can imply or state things which are flat out contradicted by another article. The in-universe explanation for this is that most (or all) articles the reader can access are actually disinformation meant to mislead any spies. The out of universe explanation is that there originally was a loose canon, but one of the more prolific authors left the site and took all his stories and characters with him and completely shattered it. The site maintains what coherency it has by only letting people become members of the site (and hence able to create new articles) if the site administrators approve of their application, and by deleting articles which get more down-votes than up-votes.
* [[Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos Slender Man]]. The traits that every Slendy incarnation has had are a black business suit with black tie and white shirt, [[TheBlank no features on his head]], and "arms" that are actually tentacles. Everything else so far has been up to the imaginations of the writers and usually relies on RuleOfScary. Some new traits that have been codified and popularized by the more well-known Slender Man works (which include WebVideo/MarbleHornets, Blog/JustAnotherFool, and Blog/SeekingTruth) are: his ability to cause electronic interference (typically with cameras); the ability to teleport himself and others; the famous circle with an X through it known as the "Operator symbol" being associated with him; only going after people who had been scared by him as children; making people sick with some mysterious disease; giving people mild amnesia; driving people crazy and presumably making them his acolytes (i.e. totheark, Albert Conaghan); and [[SpeakOfTheDevil only appearing before people who have been thinking about him constantly]] [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou on account of having looked at the various works]]. The number of these attributes present in the various blogs typically depends on their tone and how familiar the authors are with the mythos.
* In ''Roleplay/SurvivalOfTheFittest'', characters whose handlers leave the site are given new writers, whose opinion and take on the character may vary from the original writer. Some characters go through about 3 writers before they're given the personality that we've all grown to know and love, such as [[SatelliteCharacter Elizabeth Priestly]], [[CloudCuckoolander Albert Lions]], [[MalevolentMaskedMan Blood Boy]], and most infamously [[TheScrappy Liam]] [[{{Narm}} Black]]. The most notable example, though, would be [[BigBad Danya himself]]. Due to his role in the story, he gets written by multiple staff members. As a result, due to the [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation vast amount of interpretations his character gets]] one person's Danya can be somewhat different from another. A good example was at the start of v4, where, when doing profile conclusions, his main complaint about the students alternated between "too many pacifists" and "too many loners".
* ''WebVideo/TwitchPlaysPokemon'' runs on "make your own canon", so certain aspects of lore will be different depending on the author/artist. It can be jarring in 2016 to see early lore portraying Solareon and the False Prophet/Martyr as being one and the same, and the opinions on "OLDEN" can be all over the place.
* The Legendary Pokémon or the Gym Leaders in ''Roleplay/WeAreAllPokemonTrainers'' are mostly subject to this due to being {{NPC}}s controlled by different players at different times, even if there is usually a primary player in charge of some of them.
